Rapper could face charges tied to flash mob calls (AP)

LOS ANGELES – A rapper could face criminal charges after a tweet from his account incited a telephone flash mob that overwhelmed the emergency phone system at one of busiest stations of the Los Angeles County sheriff's department, the agency said Saturday.

The sheriff's department alleges The Game tweeted the Compton station's phone number Friday and told his 580,000 followers to call the number if they wanted an internship.

Phones at the southeast Los Angeles County station started ringing at 5:23 p.m. Friday, and the lines were jammed by hundreds of calls for more than two hours, prompting authorities to bring in additional help. Many callers hung up as soon as someone answered, while others asked deputies about a music internship.

During that time people with legitimate issues that included a missing person, spousal abuse and two robberies were also trying to call in, department spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

Sheriff's Capt. Mike Parker said that when authorities finally figured out what had happened, he sent two tweets to the rapper asking him to take down the number. Instead, Parker said, The Game posted that his account had been hacked and also tweeted that it was an accident.

"Yall can track a tweet down but cant solve murders!" the tweet said. "Dat was an accident but maybe now yall can actually do yall job !!!!"

A call and email to The Game's publicist, Greg Miller at Big Hassle Media, was not immediately returned.

The rapper finally took down the number around 11 p.m. Friday after a third request from Parker, who took particular issue with the accusation that deputies are not doing their job.

"Under the LA county sheriffs we've reduce homicides in Compton by over 50 percent in recent years and crime is down in Compton, but it's particularly helpful when the public can contact us," Parker said Saturday in a phone interview with The Associated Press. "This incident was the social media equivalent of going into a crowded movie theater and shouting 'Fire!'"

Investigators will document what happened, how many calls flooded the station, the rapper's tweets and other information, and will turn it over to the district attorney's office next week, Parker said. The rapper could face charges of maliciously disrupting or impeding communications over a public safety radio frequency, obstruction of justice or other charges related to delaying a peace officer from doing their job.

"Public safety was absolutely compromised," Parker said. "We were delayed in responding to calls."

The Game is a California-based rapper whose real name is Charles Louboutin, the sheriff's office said in a release.

His 2005 debut album, "The Documentary," entered the charts at the top and sold 586,000 units in the first week, according to his website. The rapper, who grew up in Compton, has collaborated with famed rappers including Dr. Dre, Kanye West and 50 Cent.

Rapper could face criminal charges for Twitter stunt (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) – Los Angeles County police have opened a criminal investigation to track the source of a tweet sent from rapper the Game's Twitter account that resulted in two hours of jammed emergency phone lines Friday night, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The tweet shared the number of the Compton sheriff's station, telling the Game's 580,000 followers to call the number to learn more about an internship he is offering.

The sheriff's department told the Times Friday that calls began pouring in after 5:20 p.m., clogging phone lines and requiring extra deputies on duty to handle the steep increase in calls.

If the tweet is traced to him, the rapper could face charges for obstruction.

He denies the tweet was sent by him.

"It wasn't me (shaggy voice)," he tweeted, pointing to a friend as the cause of the disturbance:

"@wackstar hacked my Twitter earlier..... Arrest him police... He is to blame. #TellinOnYouDemetrius."

"This was beyond irresponsible," Sheriff Capt. Mike Parker told the Times. "The deputies' ability to answer the phones and dispatch personnel to help these people in danger was significantly impeded."

Parker said he tweeted the Game at around 7 p.m., urging the rapper to call off the stunt.

In another tweet, the rapper critiqued L.A. county sheriffs for their work on the case: "Yall can track a tweet down but cant solve murders ! Dat was an accident but maybe now yall can actually do yall job !!!! #iSpeak4ThePeople"

Representatives for the Game have not yet responded to a request for comment.

Charges dismissed over supposed tape of NBA star Shaq (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – A judge on Tuesday dismissed the charges against seven reputed gang members accused of abducting a music producer to demand the return of a supposed sex tape featuring former NBA star Shaquille O'Neal.

The dismissal came after a prosecutor told Los Angeles Superior Court Judge M.L. Villar de Longoria that the District Attorney's office had lost confidence in the credibility of the alleged victim, Robert Ross.

O'Neal, who retired from pro basketball this year after 19 seasons in the National Basketball Association, was never charged in the case or named in the criminal complaint against the seven men.

After the case was filed in February, Ross testified that he told O'Neal about a sex tape during a business dispute with the NBA star.

About two weeks later, Ross claimed, the defendants kidnapped him and demanded he return the tape, said Jane Robison, a Los Angeles District Attorney's spokeswoman.

Ross also testified that he did not have such a tape, Robison said.

That was one of a number of problems with Ross' testimony, which combined with his out-of-court behavior led to the case's dismissal, Robison said.

The criminal complaint had charged the seven reputed gang members with abducting Ross at gun point in February 2008.

It also accused the men of conspiracy, and of assaulting Ross and taking his Rolex watch, diamond jewelry and $15,000 in cash before releasing him.

As a result of the judge's dismissal of the case at the request of the seven men's defense attorneys, some of the defendants will be released from jail while others will remain in custody to face charges in unrelated cases, Robison said.

Comic Andy Dick pleads not guilty to sex abuse charges (Reuters)

CHARLESTON, West Virginia (Reuters) – Comedian Andy Dick pleaded not guilty on Friday to charges he sexually abused a security guard and another man at a West Virginia bar by grabbing their crotches.

The case marks the latest in a long string of legal entanglements for Dick, who was a regular cast member on the 1990s television comedy "NewsRadio" but has since struggled with substance abuse problems.

Dick pleaded not guilty to two counts of sexual abuse before Cabell County Circuit Judge Paul Ferrell in Huntington, West Virginia, according to the local prosecutor's office.

He is accused of groping the two men at the Huntington bar in January 2010. The charge of sexual abuse carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

In 2008 Dick pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of battery and possession of marijuana stemming from an incident in which police said he pulled down the top of a 17-year-old girl in Southern California.

Dick, who sports curly blond hair and rectangular glasses, has had several other brushes with the law in recent years. He made a guest appearance earlier this year on the NBC comedy "Community."

TV producer ordered to Mexico on murder charges (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – A judge on Tuesday ordered a former producer for the TV show "Survivor" extradited to Mexico to face charges that he killed his wife two years ago while they were on holiday in the resort town of Cancun.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Jacqueline Chooljian determined that Bruce Beresford-Redman, who has been jailed since November 2010 awaiting a decision, should be sent to Mexico for a trial because there was enough circumstantial evidence to show probable cause he could have murdered his wife.

The U.S. is required to send Beresford-Redman to Mexico within 60 days but he can appeal the judge's ruling, which would extend the process for an undetermined period of time, a spokeswoman for federal prosecutors said.

The badly beaten body of Monica Beresford-Redman was found in a sewer at a resort hotel where the couple and their children were vacationing in April 2010. Beresford-Redman had reported his wife was missing three days before she was found.

Mexican authorities believe the two had an argument, he beat her to death, then dumped her body.

Beresford-Redman has proclaimed his innocence, saying in a statement that he was "devastated at her loss" and "incensed at the suggestion" that he could have killed his wife.

At Tuesday's extradition hearing, defense attorneys Richard Hirsch and Vicki Podberesky claimed that statements from the couple's 6 year-old daughter suggested there was no animosity between them while on the Cancun vacation with their family.

But U.S. prosecutors, who have reviewed the case made by Mexican authorities, believe there is enough evidence to show Beresford-Redman killed his wife for three reasons: collecting insurance money, getting sole custody of their children and continuing an extramarital affair.

According to court papers filed in Los Angeles, Monica Beresford-Redman was hit on the head, her face and body were badly beaten and the cause of death was determined to be asphyxiation. Mexican police searched the couple's hotel room in Cancun and found blood spatter in several areas.

The couple's two young children are currently being raised by their grandparents.

NY judge dismisses charges against Foxy Brown (AP)

NEW YORK – A judge on Tuesday dropped charges that rapper Foxy Brown violated a court order by mooning her neighbor after the woman told prosecutors she would not testify at the trial.

Assistant District Attorney Robert Isdith said he had tried to meet with the neighbor, Irene Raymond, in the weeks before the trial and didn't get anywhere. When he finally got in touch with her, she said she didn't want to pursue the case, he said.

"While the district attorney's office has no doubt the defendant committed this crime, we have no other choice but to dismiss this case," Isdith said.

Brown, whose real name is Inga Marchand, pleaded not guilty to criminal contempt and her trial was slated to begin Tuesday, following a dressing-down at her last court hearing by State Supreme Court Justice John Walsh when she appeared hours late.

The 31-year-old hip hop star was punctual this time, wearing a short silver silk dress and towering spike heels, and smiled and hugged he attorneys as the courtroom erupted when Walsh dismissed the case.

"I was falsely arrested twice, slandered and defamed," she said outside court, as she gave a thumbs-up and smiled for cameras. She described Raymond as jealous, and someone with a "borderline obsession," "someone who wants to be you or have your life ... that I worked really hard for," she said.

The Brooklyn-based rapper was a teenager when she broke onto the rap scene as a protege of Jay-Z, but her career has foundered in recent years.

Prosecutors said Brown violated the order in July 2010 by screaming at Raymond before bending over, baring her buttocks and showing her underwear while shouting an obscenity.

Had the case gone to trial, her attorney Salvatore Strazzullo said her defense would have been not only did she not moon Raymond, but she wasn't even wearing underwear at the time, so the neighbor was not telling the truth.

Brown was issued the order of protection after pleading guilty in 2008 to menacing Raymond with her cellphone. The two had been in a fight over Brown blasting her car stereo outside their Brooklyn building in the leafy Prospect Heights neighborhood. The restraining order is in effect until 2013, her attorney said.

Strazzullo said they would be filing a civil suit in Brooklyn alleging malicious prosecution.

Brown became one of rap's more popular stars in the 1990s, but in recent years she has stayed in the headlines mainly for her legal problems and hot temper. She also has said she suffered from hearing problems.

Her debut CD, "Ill Na Na," was released in 1996. She released her platinum-selling sophomore album, "Chyna Doll," in 1999. Her third album, "Broken Silence," — released in 2001 — reached gold status.

She rapped in the hip-hop group The Firm, which also featured Nas.

Brown said outside court that she's headed directly to the recording studio now that she's free of the case, and said she's not planning to return to criminal court any time soon.

Fugitive hip-hop mogul arrested on drug charges (AP)

NEW YORK – A fugitive hip-hop mogul recently linked by a convicted killer to a shooting that wounded Tupac Shakur was arrested Tuesday in a drug case after he was discovered hiding out at a popular Manhattan hotel.

Drug Enforcement Administration agents and deputy U.S. Marshals arrested James Rosemond on charges he ran a lucrative drug-trafficking ring. According to criminal complaint, the ring smuggled large amounts of cocaine into the New York City area and the proceeds back to Los Angeles in road cases normally used by musicians to transport their instruments and other equipment.

Authorities said Rosemond, 46, had been holed up at the W New York in Union Square under a false name. He was ordered held without bail during a brief appearance Tuesday in federal court in Brooklyn.

His attorney, Jeffrey Lichtman, said his client had been framed.

The charges are "the result of witnesses who have been bribed and threatened by the government to implicate Jimmy in the crimes charged," he said. "It's been a long time coming, but the government wants a fight so we'll give them one."

The arrest follows accusations reported last week by AllHipHop.com that Rosemond — CEO of New York City-based Czar Entertainment — orchestrated the mid-1990s ambush of Shakur outside a Manhattan recording studio.

The allegations were attributed to Dexter Isaac, who is serving a life sentence in an unrelated murder-for-hire plot. The website said he claimed he was paid $2,500 to rob and shoot the legendary rapper.

The complaint unsealed Tuesday makes no reference to the Shakur shooting, and Rosemond's lawyer has denied he had any involvement.

According to the complaint, a joint DEA-Internal Revenue Service probe of Rosemond relied on several cooperating witnesses. They include a Los Angeles dealer who pleaded guilty to charges he supplied more than 100 kilograms to the ring over a two-year period.

The complaint says agents intercepted a phone call last year during which Rosemond fretted about being watched by law enforcement.

"I can't be online no more," it quotes him as saying. "I don't even have a phone with me. I'm going from phone booth to phone booth."

To avoid detection, Rosemond devised a system that avoided using overnight delivery services, the complaint says.

Members of Rosemond's crew instead stashed cocaine in road cases and sent them to New York music studios, the complaint says. The cases were then shipped back to Los Angeles packed with cash.

Last year, agents seized a road case containing $790,000 "packaged in vacuum-sealed plastic in $100,000 bundles," the complaint says. The seizure prompted Rosemond to switch tactics, stashing drugs in hidden compartments in cars that were transported from coast to coast.

Rosemond is behind such hits as Salt-N-Pepa's "Shoop" and also represents The Game and Sean Kingston, according his company's website.

Shakur survived the 1994 shooting, but was killed two years later in Las Vegas. The slaying remains unsolved.

Songwriter dies before NYC trial on sex charges (AP)

NEW YORK – The Academy Award-winning songwriter of "You Light Up My Life" was found dead of an apparent suicide while awaiting trial on charges of sexually assaulting more than a dozen women and just months after his son was accused of murdering a swimsuit designer.

Joseph Brooks, 73, was discovered Sunday afternoon on his living room couch with a plastic dry-cleaning bag around his head and a towel around his neck, police spokesman Paul Browne said. A hose attached to a helium tank was hooked up to the bag, and the door to Brooks' Upper East Side apartment was ajar, he said.

The medical examiner will perform an autopsy to determine Brooks' cause of death. A three-page suicide note included complaints about his health, police said.

Brooks suffered a stroke in 2008, and his lawyer had said the songwriter's health was deteriorating during the court case. He appeared gaunt and shuffled slowly as he came to recent court dates.

Brooks was awaiting trial on allegations that he lured women to his apartment through an online ad offering auditions for a movie role, then sexually assaulted them after making them drink apparently drugged wine as part of an "acting exercise." He pleaded not guilty in 2009, and his court date had not yet been set.

Brooks' lawyer and Manhattan prosecutors had no immediate comment about Brooks' death.

Brooks won the Academy Award for best original song for the 1977 Debby Boone ballad "You Light Up My Life" and directed a movie of the same name about a comedian who had a one-night stand with a director. Brooks also won a Grammy for the song.

Brooks' son, Nicholas, is charged with murder in the death of his girlfriend, Peruvian-American swimsuit designer Sylvie Cachay. She was found dead, half-clothed and face-up, in a tub at the swanky Soho House after water began leaking through to the floor below.

The 24-year-old Brooks had little contact with his father in recent years, authorities have said.

Nicholas Brooks has pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail at the Rikers Island jail complex.

Rapper B.G. indicted on gun, conspiracy charges (AP)

NEW ORLEANS – A federal grand jury on Thursday indicted New Orleans rapper B.G. on gun and conspiracy charges, U.S. Attorney Jim Letten said.

Letten said the 30-year-old rapper, whose real name is Christopher Dorsey, faces two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm and one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice.

If convicted, Dorsey faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine on the gun charges and up to 20 years and a $250,000 fine on the conspiracy charge.

The charges are from a 2009 traffic stop in which officers recovered three guns, two of which were reported stolen. Police told The Times-Picayune that Dorsey was arrested along with two others in the vehicle, Demounde Pollard and Jerod Fedison.

According to the indictment, Dorsey conspired with Pollard and Fedison to obstruct justice by "inducing Demounde Pollard to sign a false affidavit attesting that Dorsey did not possess three firearms on Nov. 3, 2009."

Both Pollard and Fedison have pleaded guilty in the case and are awaiting sentencing, Letten said.

It was not immediately known whether Dorsey had an attorney and a telephone listing could not be found for him.

B.G. is probably best known for 1999's "Bling Bling," which was a hit by the group, the Hot Boys, of which he was a member along with rappers Lil Wayne, Juvenile and Turk.

No charges for rocker Doherty over party death (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters Life!) – British musician Pete Doherty, best known as a member of Babyshambles and The Libertines, will not face charges over the death of an actor at a party in 2006, prosecutors said Thursday.

Mark Blanco, 30, died after plunging from a balcony at a flat in Whitechapel in east London.

After examining the case in detail, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said there was insufficient evidence to charge any individual with either murder or manslaughter.

Blanco was involved in a confrontation with Doherty, his minder Johnny Jeannevol and a friend Paul Roundhill at the party shortly before his death, investigations have shown.

All three have denied any wrongdoing and an inquest and police reports have failed to establish the circumstances which led to the death.

Jeremy Hopkins, head of the CPS London Complex Casework Unit, said none of the evidence available was capable of establishing that Blanco was thrown or pushed from the balcony or that any other individual was present when he fell.

"If any further evidence does come to light, we will, of course, review our decision in accordance with our normal practices," he added in a statement.

Blanco's family has been waging a long campaign for an inquiry and has already vowed to issue private proceedings against Doherty.

Top Serb pop star avoids jail on fraud, gun charges (Reuters)

BELGRADE (Reuters) – A Belgrade court approved a plea bargain Monday allowing Serbia's biggest folk music star, the widow of the Serbian warlord known as Arkan, to avoid jail time over charges of embezzlement and illegal weapons.

Under a deal some saw as evidence that the rich and famous get preferential treatment in Serbia's legal system, Svetlana Raznatovic, best known by her stage name Ceca, will serve a year under house arrest and wear an electronic surveillance bracelet.

She will also pay a 1.5 million euro ($2.16 million) fine.

"This plea bargain is an insult to common sense and justice," said Marko Karadzic, a Belgrade-based human rights activist.

Ceca (pronounced TSE-tsa) gained fame in the 1990s Balkans with her patriotic folk tunes set to a techno beat. She married nationalist warlord and mafia boss Zeljko (Arkan) Raznatovic and the two became the country's most prominent couple after then Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic and his wife.

Serbian prosecutors indicted Svetlana Raznatovic, her sister and two associates in March on charges of embezzling four million German marks (two million euros) and $3.5 million from murky sales of 10 players from Belgrade's Obilic soccer club, which she owned in the early part of the last decade. The prosecution alleged Raznatovic and her associates sold soccer players to foreign clubs and shared profits without paying taxes or declaring the deals through the Obilic club.

Ceca took over the club, previously owned by Arkan, after a rival gang gunned him down in 2000 in the lobby of a swanky Belgrade hotel.

Judge Sladjana Markovic said that the plea bargain was aimed at preventing a long trial after an eight-year investigation.

"Raznatovic is a single mom ... Her sister is a family woman, the Obilic club did not file charges and the two did not commit any crimes since 2002, a testimony to their good character," Markovic said.

Dragan Krgovic, Raznatovic's lawyer, highlighted the money element of the plea deal. "The state will cash in 1.5 million (euros) and ... this is a real bargain for the state and prosecutors," he said.

Some ordinary citizens disagreed. "This is an outrage, it shows crime pays ... how can I tell my children to be honest and hard working?" said Dragisa Savic, 44, a security guard.

Charges to be dropped in Bieber NY mall frenzy (AP)

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Justin Bieber (BEE'-bur) has agreed to record a public service announcement on cyberbullying in order to resolve misdemeanor charges filed against one of his managers and a record executive after a frenzy at a New York mall.

The case stemmed from an incident in 2009, when thousands of unruly girls turned up at a clothing store on Long Island to see the teen pop star sign autographs.

Bieber manager Scott Bruan and Def Jam Records executive James Roppo were charged after police said they refused to help disperse the crowd.

Prosecutors told a judge Friday that they are dropping those charges. The record company and a management company pleaded guilty to fire code violations.

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice tells Newsday that having Bieber educate kids about bullying is "invaluable."

Christina Aguilera's Boyfriend Avoids DUI Charges

Finally, some good news has come Christina Aguilera's way. Her boyfriend, Matt Rutler, has escaped DUI charges.

According to TMZ, Rutler was not above the legal driving limit when he was pulled over and arrested in the early hours of March 1. Rutler was charged with a DUI while Aguilera, a passenger in the car, was briefly taken into custody for public drunkenness.

It has been determined that Rutler's blood alcohol content was .06 at the time of his arrest -- below California's legal limit of .08.

The LA County District Attorney has officially dropped the charges against Rutler, citing insufficient evidence. No charges were filed against Aguilera after her arrest.
This bit of good news bodes well for the singer, who starts her new gig as a vocal coach on the new singing competition show 'The Voice' this week on NBC.
