Media mogul Rupert Murdoch takes to Twitter

LONDON (AP) — Rupert Murdoch has begun the new year by setting up in a new field of communications — he's started tweeting.

The media mogul, who is recovering from perhaps his most difficult year in the business, is posting on Twitter under the handle rupertmurdoch, spokeswoman Daisy Dunlop at News International confirmed Monday.

The account was opened over the New Year's holiday, but many doubted its authenticity because Murdoch, 80, has generally tried to stay out of the spotlight as his media empire comes under increased scrutiny because of widespread phone hacking at his U.K. newspapers.

Murdoch faced harsh questioning in Parliament last summer and may face additional questions from the wide-ranging Leveson Inquiry into media practices later this year, but he makes no mention of these troubles in his tweets, which include the News Corp. chief's New Year's resolutions.

"My resolutions, try to maintain humility and always curiosity," he tweets. "And of course diet!"

Murdoch had attracted more than 46,000 followers by Monday morning, just two days after he started tweeting. His wife Wendi Deng has also started tweeting — she's wendi_deng.

She refers to the setbacks of the last year in her tweets: "A lot of bad things happened in 2011 but I hope in 2012 we can put them all behind us and sail on to a bright future for everyone Wxx."

She also gently reminds fellow tweeters to spell her first name with an "i'' at the end, not a "y."

The Murdochs' entry into the world of Twitter was met with some bemusement and some hostility by its denizens.

John Prescott, former U.K. deputy prime minister, came up with one of the wittier responses to Murdoch's unexpected surfacing at the very public, very popular micro-blogging site.

"Welcome to Twitter," he writes to the mogul, whose reporters were skilled at hacking into telephone messaging systems. "I've left you a Happy New Year message on my voicemail!"

Others express fears that the wealthy Murdoch will buy the Twitter site.

Murdoch also deleted a tweet in which he suggested that Britons might have too many public holidays for a country facing tough times.

At times in his tweets Murdoch sounds bored with his New Year's holiday. He complains that there are "too many people" on the island of St. Bart's, an exclusive Caribbean hideaway.

"Back to work tomorrow," he says. "Enough idling!"

Murdoch also tweets that some of his friends are "frightened" by what he might say.

He also praises Mike Bloomberg, the Republican mayor of New York City, and Rick Santorum, a Republican presidential candidate.

Murdoch tweeted his wishes for a happy new year and said it would probably exceed expectations.

"Happy 2012," he says. "May it be better than all experts predict. Has to be! Must must change everything to create jobs for all, especially young."

His Twitter profile is accompanied by a snapshot showing Murdoch grimacing. He is wearing a casual white T-shirt with a light blue sweater.

Murdoch was forced to close the News of the World last year because of widespread phone hacking at the tabloid. The victims included celebrities, sports stars, and a murdered teenager whose voicemails had been hacked.

The scandal has damaged Murdoch's financial holdings and raised doubts about whether his family can retain control of the company, which has substantial interests in newspapers, magazines, movies, television and book publishing.

Cher takes to Twitter to defend Chaz Bono on DWTS (AP)

By SANDY COHEN, AP Entertainment Writer Sandy Cohen, Ap Entertainment Writer – Wed Aug 31, 9:13 pm ET

LOS ANGELES – Cher is taking to Twitter to defend her son Chaz Bono.

The superstar posted several tweets Wednesday defending his participation on the upcoming season of "Dancing With the Stars." Bono is the first transgender competitor on the hit ABC show.

Cher says her son, who was born female and underwent surgery to become a man, is being "viciously attacked" on blogs and message boards since the new cast was announced Monday.

"This is Still America right? It took guts 2 do it," Cher wrote, adding that she supports him no matter what he chooses to do.

"Mothers don't stop Getting angry with stupid bigots who (mess) with their children!" the 65-year-old singer wrote.

Bono, 42, is paired with pro dancer Lacey Schwimmer on the reality show, where celebrities and their professional partners perform various ballroom dances for judges' scores and viewer votes.

"Dancing" fans have posted both angry and supportive comments on the show's message boards. One called the casting choice "disgusting" and said "ABC should be ashamed of theirselves for harassing mainstream Americans and Christains."

Another wrote: "I never and mean NEVER watch DWTS but will this season to support/vote for (Chaz)."

On his own Twitter page, Bono described himself as "the luckiest guy around" and thanked his fans for their support. He also thanked Cher.

"Thanks for all your support mom," he wrote. "The haters are just motivating me to work harder and stay on DWTS as long as I possibly can."

The 13th season of "Dancing With the Stars" is set to premiere Sept. 19.

The VMAs drew MTV's biggest audience since the network began measuring its viewership. Sunday night's show attracted 12.4 million viewers.

Rapper could face criminal charges for Twitter stunt (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) – Los Angeles County police have opened a criminal investigation to track the source of a tweet sent from rapper the Game's Twitter account that resulted in two hours of jammed emergency phone lines Friday night, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The tweet shared the number of the Compton sheriff's station, telling the Game's 580,000 followers to call the number to learn more about an internship he is offering.

The sheriff's department told the Times Friday that calls began pouring in after 5:20 p.m., clogging phone lines and requiring extra deputies on duty to handle the steep increase in calls.

If the tweet is traced to him, the rapper could face charges for obstruction.

He denies the tweet was sent by him.

"It wasn't me (shaggy voice)," he tweeted, pointing to a friend as the cause of the disturbance:

"@wackstar hacked my Twitter earlier..... Arrest him police... He is to blame. #TellinOnYouDemetrius."

"This was beyond irresponsible," Sheriff Capt. Mike Parker told the Times. "The deputies' ability to answer the phones and dispatch personnel to help these people in danger was significantly impeded."

Parker said he tweeted the Game at around 7 p.m., urging the rapper to call off the stunt.

In another tweet, the rapper critiqued L.A. county sheriffs for their work on the case: "Yall can track a tweet down but cant solve murders ! Dat was an accident but maybe now yall can actually do yall job !!!! #iSpeak4ThePeople"

Representatives for the Game have not yet responded to a request for comment.

Sheriff: Rapper incited phone flash mob on Twitter (AP)

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles County sheriff's department says The Game incited a telephone flash mob that overwhelmed the emergency phone system.

Capt. Mike Parker tells the Los Angeles Times (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/ap/ap_en_mu/storytext/us_the_game_tweet/42592259/SIG=10mtml2on/*http://lat.ms/oGFHO1) that the rapper tweeted the number of the Compton station Friday and told his 580,000 followers that if they wanted an internship with him, they should call the number.

Sheriff's Lt. Suzan Young says "the phones started ringing like crazy" around 5:20 p.m. Parker says phone lines were jammed for more than two hours.

The rapper later posted that his account was hacked but also tweeted that it was "an accident."

The Game could face criminal charges. Parker says investigators are planning to forward a criminal complaint to the district attorney's office.

Courtney Love sued again for defamation on Twitter (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – It's been only a few months since Courtney Love paid to settle that unique lawsuit claiming she defamed a fashion designer via Twitter. Now the rocker has been sued again for comments made online, this time by lawyers who represented her in an effort to pursue money allegedly stolen from the estate of her late husband, Kurt Cobain.

Gordon & Holmes, a San Diego-based law firm, filed suit Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court claiming the firm represented Love from December 2008 to May 2009, but toward the end of the representation, Love allegedly became angry when the firm's partner Rhonda Holmes asked that Love refrain from "any and all substance abuse" during the attorney-client relationship, according to the suit.

Love allegedly fired the firm, but came back months later asking it to resume representing her. The firm declined, according to the suit, and soon after Love began making allegedly libelous statements on Twitter and elsewhere suggesting the lawyers had taken a bribe.

"I was f***ing devastated (sic) when Rhonda J Holmes Esq of San Diego was bought off" Love tweeted.

The suit also cites an interview Love did in July 2010 with a Web site:

"I've been hiring and firing lawyers to help me with this." She goes on to tell of a female attorney who has since stopped taking her calls because "they got to her" after she mentioned something to Page 6 of the New York Post. "She's disappeared."

Holmes claims that the statements suggesting she had been bought off or accepted a bribe, coupled with Love's power as a celebrity, have caused significant damage to her legal career. The attorney is also asking for punitive damages to deter Love from repeating the allegedly defamatory actions.

The complaint, filed by Holmes' firm, alleges causes of action for libel, false light invasion of privacy and intentional interference with a prospective economic advantage. It seeks unspecified damages.

Love's attorney could not immediately be reached for comment.

British footballer takes legal action on Twitter (AFP)

LONDON (AFP) – A British footballer is taking legal action to force Twitter to give the details of users who broke a gagging order granting him anonymity over an alleged affair, his lawyers have said.

The married player had earlier obtained an order from a judge banning publication of his identity over an alleged sexual relationship with a female contestant on the reality television show Big Brother.

"An application has been made to obtain limited information concerning the unlawful use of Twitter by a small number of individuals who may have breached a court order," his law firm, Schillings, said in a statement on Friday.

The player is not identified in the court documents.

A spokesman for US-based Twitter said: "We?re not able to comment."

Earlier this month a Twitter user published the names of several British celebrities who have allegedly obtained anonymised injunctions or so-called super-injunctions which prevent even the mention of the order itself.

A long-awaited judicial report on Friday said that the gagging orders should only be granted where strictly necessary and that media who may be silenced by such bans should also be informed beforehand.

But senior judge David Neuberger also urged lawmakers to think twice before using their right of unrestricted freedom of speech in parliament to undermine them.

On Thursday, a member of the House of Lords revealed that Fred Goodwin, the former boss of the bailed-out Royal Bank of Scotland, had won an injunction banning publication of details of an alleged affair with a colleague.

The High Court subsequently quashed the anonymity order that had been protecting him.

'Glee' Extra Reveals Prom King/Queen Spoilers Via Twitter

Just when it seemed the 'Glee' camp had finally realized the art of keeping important plotlines a secret, an extra managed to spoil the outcome of the much-anticipated 'Born This Way' prom episode.

Warning: Spoilers ahead! Do not read any further if you're trying to avoid leaks about the episode.

As chronicled on ONTD, a rogue extra answered fan questions about the episode on Twitter the other day and spoiled the outcome of the heated prom race -- majorly pissing off 'Glee' co-creator Brad Falchuk in the process.

"K is PQ and Ka is PK," tweeted Nicole Crowther, a Los Angeles actress who worked as an extra on the show. The "K" she's referring to undoubtedly stands for Kurt, and the "Ka" stands for Karofsky -- meaning Kurt will be crowned prom queen and his closeted torturer will be crowned king.

Crowther's tweets were removed, but not before 'Glee' executive producer Falchuk (and legions of fans) saw them. Falchuk replied, "Who are you to spoil something talented people have spent months to create?," adding "hope you're qualified to do something besides work in entertainment."

Though E! Online speculated that the prom scenes might be reshot, Crowther tweeted, "They are not doing reshoots because of my careless mistake so shut up haters and leave me alone. Grow up and get a life."

She's also been posting a steady stream of apologies since yesterday's incident, including a response to Falchuk. "I'm truly sorry. I was being completely thoughtless and made a horrible mistake. I'm deeply & incredibly sorry Brad."

Neil Patrick Harris Shows Off Twins on Twitter

Neil Patrick Harris played the role of doting dad Sunday on Twitter.

"Relaxing on a Sunday afternoon. My heart is full of love," Harris wrote as he shared a photo of his twins, Harper and Gideon, giggling with his partner, David Burtka.

Harris and Burtka welcomed their bundles of joy last October through a surrogate. The funny man also took to Twitter to make an official birth announcement.

"Babies!!" Harris wrote. "All of us are happy, healthy, tired, and a little pukey."

A bit of relaxing with his family is well deserved, as Harris recently starred alongside Stephen Colbert and Christina Hendricks in 'Company' at Avery Fisher Hall in New York City.

Justin Bieber Breaks Up With Twitter ... Via Twitter

Pop superstar Justin Bieber is breaking up -- no, not with girlfriend Selena Gomez -- with Twitter. Yesterday, Bieber took to his Twitter page to announce that he is staging a temporary trial separation with Twitter.

The performer wants to stay focused on his craft. "I'm just excited at this pt to get on stage and perform. gonna take a little break from twitter and enjoy this time with my family until then," he tweeted. Bieber has since posted a few more residual tweets. Guess breaking up is easier said than done.

In fairness, the Biebs might be genuinely ticked off. On his recent trip to Israel the 'Baby' singer's hopes of meeting with the Holy Land's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were dashed. He also recently voiced his frustration over the paparazzi's lack of respect for his privacy during his spiritual journey. Bieber Fever knows no bounds.

Time's Twitter 101: Who Should You Follow?

Throw your Twitter fingers in the air and get ready to follow like you really do care. The boss of list making, Time, recently released picks for the 140 Best Twitter Feeds. We combed the list and found the top tweeting, must-follow celebs who are more than just talking heads.

We weren't surprised to see the likes of Justin Bieber, Ashton Kutcher and Lady Gaga listed for their sheer number of followers (they all boast more than 6 million), but leave Charlie Sheen off the list and prepare to suffer the consequences of the maniacal warlock.

And although he's holding on tight at the end of the list, Neil Patrick Harris is one to follow in Time's book and in ours. We're excited to see what kind of humor being a new dad brings to the actor, but we have a feeling he'll keep our Twitter eyes entertained whether he's writing about diapers or ... magic. "Harry Houdini was born on this day, 137 years ago. When using handcuffs or other restraints tonight, please do so in his honor," Harris tweeted recently.

As for our sharp-tongued brothers and sisters, get ready to click "Follow" on Chelsea Handler, Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert. This lady and these gents know how to keep the funny ball rolling, and they do it oh so well in 140 characters or less.

But aside from Charlie Sheen, who else was snubbed by Time's 'Best' list? Kim Kardashian is a Twitter giant -- she may not be the most eloquent of twits, but the girl has almost 7 million followers and gets paid the big bucks for simply tweeting what she's having for lunch, if said lunch happens to be at Carl's Jr., of course.

Another snub? Russell Brand. Now that he's married to one of the world's biggest pop stars, Katy Perry, Brand has had more Twitter ammo than ever, but was sadly left off Time's list. "When I was 'fun and fearless' I spent a lot of time smoking crack and getting arrested. Where was Cosmo then?" he recently tweeted about his Cosmo Magazine award for Fun Fearless Male.

So log on, start following and get your twit wit on.

Miley Cyrus Returns to Twitter Thanks to Charlie Sheen

On March 29 Miley Cyrus did something she swore she'd never do again: She returned to Twitter.

In 2009, Cyrus quit the social networking site behind her, claiming it interfered too much in her private life, and shut it down for good and has been Twitter-less since then -- until now.

Most recently, Cyrus tested the waters and tweeted via her producer Rock Mafia's page two weeks ago. "This is my new way to connect," she tweeted. "When I need to speak out I will tweet from

George Lopez Apologizes to Kirstie Alley on Twitter

George Lopez made some nasty comparisons between Kirstie Alley and an animal earlier this week, but now it's Lopez who's got his tail between his legs.

Following Alley's debut on 'Dancing With the Stars,' Lopez compared the actress's routine to a pig with "little hooves tapping away." Lopez followed up his insensitive comment by joking, "Before the show, she went to the market and then she had roast beef," and playing a video of a pig in a car, alleging that it was Alley.

While Alley seemed unfazed by Lopez's nasty remarks, her fans rallied in support of the actress and her dancing skills and slammed Lopez for his malicious behavior.

It seems that Lopez took the message to heart. Yesterday, the comedian apologized to the actress via Twitter, writing, "I misjudged the joke. No malice was intended and I apologize to Kirstie."
Despite his contrition, it doesn't seem that Alley is willing to let Lopez's bad behavior slide.

The actress took to Twitter yesterday to impart some wisdom to her offended fans, writing, "Don't worry about George's comments...just remember what happens to the big bad, drunk woolf (sic)...falls in a boiling pot of vodka.Piggy laughs."

But the former 'Cheers' star wasn't finished. The actress followed up her initial tweet by responding to Lopez directly, making fun of the comedian for accepting a kidney from his wife and later divorcing her. Alley wrote:

Kim Kardashian is a Twitter giant -- she may not be the most eloquent of twits, but the girl has almost 7 million followers and gets paid the big bucks for simply tweeting what she's having for lunch, if said lunch happens to be at Carl's Jr., of course.
