Sheen draws record viewers for "Men" and TV roast (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Dead or alive, Charlie Sheen ruled the TV airwaves on Monday, pulling in record audiences for his Comedy Central roast and more than 28 million Americans to his "Two and A Half Men" TV funeral.

Some 28.7 million watched CBS bury Sheen's wayward TV character Charlie Harper and introduce new star Ashton Kutcher in an all-time series high audience for the lucrative comedy, according to updated figures from research company Nielsen.

And after months of headlines following Sheen's bitter exit from the most-watched comedy on U.S. TV, 6.4 million people watched his sex life, drug use and recent career meltdown draw laughter on Comedy Central's TV roast by fellow celebrities including "Jackass" stuntman Steve-0 and boxer Mike Tyson.

Comedy Central said Sheen's was its most-watched roast ever, while the audience for "Two and A Half Men" was more than double that of last year's season opener and bigger than any episode in the show's first eight seasons with Sheen in the starring role.

Monday's season premiere of "Two and A Half Men" crushed the opening of "Dancing With the Stars" on rival ABC despite a celebrity cast that gave viewers their first glimpse of the ballroom contest's first transgender contestant, Chaz Bono, and TV legal analyst Nancy Grace both doing the cha cha.

Nielsen figures showed that 18.6 million people watched the season premiere of "Dancing with the Stars" -- a 24 percent drop from last year's opening show.

Reviews for Kutcher's debut on "Two and a Half Men," playing a heartbroken Internet billionaire with a penchant for walking around nude, were kind and suggested that the series -- a cash cow for both CBS and program makers Warner Bros television -- was far from dead.

"Kutcher's performance was good, nearly as poker-faced fine as Sheen's was ... Kutcher will probably prove just as skilled," wrote Entertainment Weekly's Ken Tucker.

TV Guide's Matt Roush said that judging by first impressions the revamped "Men" will "will survive both Charlies just fine for at least a little while longer."

The Los Angeles Times called the premiere "a promising beginning" adding that "Kutcher brings a softness to a series that could be brittle and sour, misanthropic and misogynistic, and temperamentally middle-aged."

Sheen was the highest-paid actor on U.S. television before being fired in March after an insulting tirade against the show's creators and producers that followed months of partying and attempts at rehab.

Sheen and Warner Bros are said to be close to a settlement of the actor's $100 million lawsuit over his firing. Sheen has also made a number of contrite appearances in the past week, including delivering an awkward mea culpa at the Primetime Emmy Awards show on Sunday.

MTV music awards gets record 12.4 million viewers (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The buzz-heavy 2011 Video Music Awards scored the biggest audience in MTV's history, MTV said on Monday.

MTV, owned by Viacom, said that a record-breaking 12.4 million people watched Sunday's live performance and awards ceremony from Los Angeles, where Beyonce revealed she was pregnant with her first child, Lady Gaga appeared in drag, and the late British singer Amy Winehouse was remembered in a moving tribute.

Last year's MTV Video Music Awards ceremony -- where Gaga appeared in a dress made of raw meat -- drew 11.4 million viewers -- the biggest audience since 2002.

MTV said that 8.5 million of those watching Sunday's show were 12-34 year-olds, making it the most watched telecast of all time in that age group.

Katy Perry and Adele were the biggest winners, taking home three awards each, but it was Beyonce who was the story of the night.

"Beyonce stole everyone's thunder by revealing she was pregnant," said Billboard. Entertainment Weekly said the singer's baby bump was the "one defining moment" of the evening.

Other reviewers and online fans highlighted the salute by Bruno Mars, Tony Bennett and Russell Brand to Winehouse, 27, who died of still to be determined causes in London in July, and a simple, effects-free performance by Britain's Adele.

The Los Angeles Times said Chris Brown's "career rehab" performance -- following his 2009 conviction for assaulting his then-girlfriend Rihanna -- was also a strong moment in what was "a wildly inconsistent evening."

The VMA show was broadcast on Sunday without a traditional host linking the various acts and presentations, but few critics seemed to lament the omission.

MTV said its pre-show, featuring red carpet arrivals and celebrity interviews, also fared well with audiences, drawing 7.3 million viewers -- a 16 percent increase on last year.

Beyonce's baby bump reveal sparks Twitter record (AP)

NEW YORK – Beyonce's pregnant performance at the MTV Video Music Awards sparked a Twitter record.

When Beyonce performed at 10:35 p.m. EDT Sunday night, there were 8,868 tweets per second. Twitter said that rate was a record for the service.

At the VMAs, Beyonce revealed a baby bump, cupping her growing belly for photographers as she arrived and rubbing her tummy when she performed. The 29-year-old singer is married to Jay-Z.

The VMAs drew MTV's biggest audience since the network began measuring its viewership. Sunday night's show attracted 12.4 million viewers.

Winehouse album sets UK chart record after death (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) – The late Amy Winehouse's acclaimed second and final album "Back to Black" has become the UK's biggest seller of the 21st century, according to data from the Official Charts Company.

The company said the 2006 record, which included such hits as "Rehab," "Back to Black" and "Love Is a Losing Game" and netted Winehouse five Grammys, had sold 3.26 million copies, surpassing James Blunt's "Back to Bedlam" (3.25 million).

Winehouse's album shot back to the top of the British charts following her death aged 27 on July 23.

Dido's "No Angel" -- released in the UK in February 2001 -- is the third best-selling album of the century with sales of 3.07 million in the UK.

Katy Perry ties Jackson record on Billboard (AP)

NEW YORK – When Katy Perry first came on the scene, some dismissed her as a one-hit wonder. Three years later, she's proven she's a multi-hit wonder, becoming the first woman to score five No. 1 songs from one album on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Her "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" set the precedent: It's the latest No. 1 from her platinum album "Teenage Dream." Only Michael Jackson had five No. 1s from one album before Perry, from "Bad."

But Jackson spent a total of seven weeks at the top with his "Bad" songs; Perry has been at the top perch now for a cumulative 18 weeks.

Perry's first major hit was the song "I Kissed a Girl" in 2008.

Katy Perry may beat Michael Jackson's singles record (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) – Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night (TGIF)" is the fifth song from her latest album to top Billboard's Pop Songs airplay chart.

That breaks a record previously owned by Lady Gaga and Justin Timberlake, who'd previously had a mere four tunes each from a single album land at No. 1 on that chart, which has been around for 19 years.

But Perry is poised for a far more significant achievement when the Hot 100 is announced later today. Michael Jackson holds the record on that historic chart, having topped it with five singles from his 1987 "Bad" album.

If "Last Friday Night" reaches No. 1 on the Hot 100, as expected, she'll tie Jacko's high mark ... and then, surely, try to outdo it by releasing a sixth single from "Teenage Dream's" treasure trove of smashes.

Meanwhile, Eric Church was indulging in some self-fulfilling prophecy when he titled his third effort "Chief." The upstart country singer turned out to be the commander-in-chief of the latest Billboard 200 album sales chart, as his latest effort debuted on top with 145,000 copies sold -- more than quadrupling the opening numbers for his previous album.

Female singers made most of the news over on the album sales chart, after Church's stately No. 1 bow. Adele fell from the top spot to No. 2, even though, at 83,000, her unit figures were actually up a little, as they have been almost every week.

Kelly Rowland's ultimate career destiny is still a question mark, as her third solo album, "Here I Am," entered at No. 3 on sales of 77,000 units -- a slight comedown for Beyonce's former sidekick, despite the urban ubiquity of her "Motivation" single.

Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black" sold 54,000 and moved up five spots to No. 4, in its first full week of predictably robust posthumous sales. Another white British soul singer, Joss Stone, enjoyed the week's final top 10 entry, as "LP1," her first independently released album, kicked in at No. 9 with 30,000 sold, a slight improvement over her previous major-label-backed effort.

One singles chart that Perry is not currently queen of is digital song sales. The top spot belonged, as it has for a month now, to LMFOA's unstoppable "Party Rock Anthem," which sold another 202,000 downloads. After a slow start last week, Jay-Z and Kanye West's "Otis" jumped up to No. 9 by selling 113,000, setting the stage for next Monday's release of the superstar collaborators' full album, expected to be one of the year's biggest sellers.

Wedding dress to draw record crowds to London palace (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) – Buckingham Palace expects record crowds this summer, when up to 650,000 people are set to file into Queen Elizabeth's London residence and past the dress worn by Kate Middleton at her royal wedding to Prince William.

The ivory and white garment, designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, won over the fashion press and public when Middleton, now the Duchess of Cambridge and a future queen, walked up the aisle of Westminster Abbey in April.

In the run-up to the fairytale wedding, details of the outfit were a closely guarded secret, known only to the handful of people who worked on the dress.

Hundreds of millions of viewers admired it on television and the internet, and now hundreds of thousands will see it for themselves, unprotected on a raised oval stage in the ornate palace ballroom where state banquets are held.

Reflecting the surge in interest in the royals after the marriage and the newlyweds' recent trip to North America, advanced ticket sales for the summer tour of Buckingham Palace have hit 126,000, up 107 percent on the same point last year.

In total a record 643,000 people are expected to take the tour, during which visitors can see 19 state rooms, a display of Faberge jewelry -- and the dress, Middleton's wedding shoes, earrings and a silk replica of her bouquet.

Above the dress is the original veil and Cartier "halo" tiara worn by the bride, featuring around 900 diamonds and lent to her for the occasion by the queen.

Caroline de Guitaut, curator of decorative arts at the Royal Collection, said the royal couple, whose wedding drew huge crowds to the streets of London, had striven for modesty as well as beauty and grandeur on the big day.

"They wanted the wedding to be modest as far as an occasion of that kind can be modest," De Guitaut told reporters at a press preview of the display.

"There is a sense of modesty in this dress. I think it will stand the test of time, definitely."

QUEEN AND DUCHESS TO VISIT

In a video made after the wedding and for the exhibition, designer Burton talked in detail about the painstaking process of making the dress and its 2.7-meter train.

Middleton was closely involved in the design process as well as in the decision to display the dress in Buckingham Palace. The queen and duchess were due to visit the display on Friday.

"What is so astounding ... is just how much thought and extraordinary work and craftsmanship and skill went into it," said De Guitaut.

Even the wedding cake is on show in a glass cabinet in the state dining room, complete with ornate sugar flowers and a deep cut where the couple plunged in the knife.

The other major attraction for visitors this year is a display of around 100 pieces from the British monarchy's unparalleled collection of works by Russian jeweler Faberge.

The exhibition, which features highlights from a total of 600-700 Faberge creations owned by the royals, ranged from treasures bought by and given to Queen Victoria to a recent bequest to heir to the throne Prince Charles.

"Many of these pieces are still in use," said De Guitaut. "Clocks, for example, are still on desks and (picture) frames are still used in private apartments. It's still a living collection."

The summer opening at Buckingham Palace runs from July 23 to October 3.

"American Idol" reject Pia Toscano signs record deal (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – "American Idol" contestant Pia Toscano, whose early exit from the TV show shocked viewers, has signed a record deal with Interscope Records, the company said on Wednesday.

The 22 year-old Toscano, with her dark hair and powerful singing voice, was considered one of the front-runners for the top prize on "Idol" this year. But she was voted off by viewers to finish in 9th place.

Toscano will release her debut single "This Time" -- described as an acoustic guitar and beat-driven track -- on July 12, said Interscope Records. She will release her first album later this year.

Toscano described the record deal as "a dream come true".

This year's "Idol" winner was deep-voiced country singer Scotty McCreery, a former grocery store clerk.

Stephen Colbert, Jack White cut a record together (AP)

NEW YORK – Stephen Colbert wants to climb the charts.

Colbert debuted his new Jack White-produced single, "Charlene II (I'm Over You)" on "The Colbert Report" Thursday night.

Colbert has featured White on "The Colbert Report" all week during his "rock odyssey" series, "Dr. Pepper Presents StePhest ColbChella `011 — Rock You Like a Thirst-Icane."

The former White Stripe and his Nashville-based record label, Third Man Records, produced the track. The Black Belles, a goth girl rock band on Third Man, performed backup.

The reference of the song is one only die-hard members of the Colbert Nation likely will grasp. It's a follow-up to his mock `80s new wave song, "Charlene (I'm Right Behind You)."

Since 2006, Colbert has occasionally alluded to the song and suggested that before his conservative pundit character became a TV show host, he was the lead singer in a group called Stephen and the Colberts.

But the sequel, "Charlene II (I'm Over You)," is entering the real world. The song is to be available from iTunes and Third Man Records, including on vinyl copies. There's even a limited edition red-white-and-blue edition, with the vinyl dyed in the colors of the flag.

Colbert and White will be selling copies Friday in Manhattan from the Third Man Records' "rolling record store" — a truck that travels the country selling the label's music.

This is White's second collaboration with a late-night talk show host. Last year he released a live rockabilly album with Conan O'Brien.

Colbert has taken every chance to remind White that he's a Grammy winner. Colbert's "A Colbert Christmas" won the Grammy for best comedy album in 2010.

But this is far from the comedian's first foray into musical performance. Among his greatest hits are a performance of "Empire State of Mind" with Alicia Keys, a "shred-off" with the Decemberists and a rendition of Rebecca Black's "Friday."

Record label responds to Joan Jett lawsuit (AP)

NEW YORK – A record label that singer-guitarist Joan Jett and 1970s bandmate Cherie Currie are suing to stop the release of a tribute album in homage to their early punk band says the recording was made "with the best of intentions" to raise funds for cancer research.

Main Man Records said Friday it had not received a copy of the lawsuit filed in Manhattan, but said it would vigorously defend itself.

The two-disc album, "Take It or Leave It: A Tribute to the Queens of Noise," features covers of songs by the Runaways, which launched the careers of Jett and Currie. It's supposed to be released June 28.

Jett and Currie say in their lawsuit that the Easton, N.J.-based record label used their names to promote the album without their permission.

Seacrest: Record vote for 'American Idol' finale (AP)

LOS ANGELES – Ryan Seacrest says the "American Idol" contest between two teenage country singers drew a record number of votes.

More than 122 million votes were cast for Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery, "American Idol" host Seacrest said as the finale got under way Wednesday night.

More than three-quarters of a billion votes were cast over the course of the season, Seacrest said.

The finale vote tally may reflect interest in the show's first all-country finale. The 16-year-old Alaina and 17-year-old McCreery also are the youngest pair of finalists.

Star-studded AIDS gala raises record 10M dollars (AP)

CAP D'ANTIBES, France – Vertiginous fuchsia heels bedazzled with 360 carats'-worth of precious stones, a tennis match with Monaco's Prince Albert and the rubberized second-skin dress right off Gwen Stefani's back were among the extravagant lots that helped a star-studded charity auction raise a record-breaking $10 million (euro7 million) for AIDS research.

A-listers turned up by the herd, with Sean Penn, Karl Lagerfeld, Janet Jackson, Freida Pinto and Patrick Dempsey in attendance Thursday's amfAR charity dinner-cum-auction, held at the exclusive seaside Hotel du Cap. Robert De Niro, who heads the jury at the Cannes Film Festival — which runs through Sunday in the next town over — and jury members Jude Law and Uma Thurman also attended.

Stars in their evening finest and those fabulous enough to call them their friends — and spring for a seat at the several-thousand-dollar-a-plate gala — mingled over cocktails before the start of the three-course dinner that stretched out over four long hours.

In past years, Sharon Stone has emceed the evening's festivities, but she was absent Thursday, so dozens of heavy-hitters took turns cajoling the well-heeled audience to splurge on artwork, trips, fine wine and a pair of stiletto heels billed as the world's "most precious shoes."

Proceeds from the event go to the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR), a nonprofit organization that supports HIV/AIDS research.

Draped with 500 diamonds, sapphires, and other stones, the heels were a one-of-a-kind collaboration between Italian shoemaker Giuseppe Zanotti and French luxury jeweler Chopard.

"I'm wearing them, and my bodyguard is my shadow," said Polish-born model Anja Rubik, who paired sparking stilettos with a strapless Pucci dress in blue feathers.

Asked whether she was happy with the euro140,000 ($200,000) the shoes — and a pair of matching earrings — ended up fetching, she demurred. "I was hoping for more. I'm very ambitious."

The evening's highest-fetching lot was chance to play a match of tennis with His Serene Highness Prince Albert of Monaco and take a dip with his fiancee, South African-born Olympic swimmer Charlene Wittstock. The tete-a-tete was sold to two different bidders for euro500,000 apiece.

Wittstock placed the winning euro60,000 bid on Moet & Chandon's Nebuchadnezzar Champagne, in a gold-leafed bottle.

A ten-day-long trip for eight aboard a private jet fetched euro180,000, and a week in an exclusive chalet in the chic French ski station of Courcheval was sold twice for euro250,000 a piece.

A Herb Ritz photo of Elizabeth Taylor fetched euro150,000, a print by Robert Rauschenberg, euro130,000, and Jean Pigozzi's 1981 photograph of Mick Jagger went for euro300,000.

Between the bids, Courtney Love, Brazilian singer Bebel Gilberto and Boy George played sets, in a failed bid to get the audience pumping.

Perhaps the tepid reaction was the result of a food coma — the menu included olive oil roasted sea bass with bearnaise sauce, a medley of spring vegetables and a berry-topped meringue — but whatever the reason, it proved too much for Boy George.

"You are the worst," he chided after a bid to get the audience to sing along to "Karma Chameleon" netted radio silence. When it happened again, he came out swinging, ranting, "so you're not going to sing along? You're too rich and fabulous to be bothered? Unbelievable!"

The 18th edition of the amfAR dinner was dedicated to the memory of Elizabeth Taylor, an early crusader in the fight against AIDS who helped establish amfAR.

Elton John hailed Taylor as a "force of nature" and pledged she would remain the charity event's "guiding star."

Ivana Trump, wearing a sequined long-sleeve gown by Paris house Azzaro, said Taylor, who died in March, continued to loom large over the event.

"She was not just a legend of the silver screen but she also had a big heart and she will be missed," said Trump, her blond locks swept into a towering beehive.

Last year, the event brought in $6.7 million.

"Glee" producer Adam Anders launches record label (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) – After co-producing more than 100 Billboard Hot 100 hits for Fox's "Glee," the show's executive music producer, Adam Anders, is looking to capture some of that lightning in a bottle for recording artists on his own label.

Anders Music Records' first release is the self-titled debut album of singer/dancer/actor Shane Harper, who plays the recurring character Spencer Walsh on the Disney Channel sitcom "Good Luck Charlie."

Also in the works are albums by Montana native Zac Poor and Texas singer/songwriter Ben Burgess. Universal Motown will be the distributing label for Poor's album.

"When you do a standard distribution deal, you are being boxed into one system," Anders says. "By saying, 'Let's do everything in-house,' we can make the decision as to when we need a major."

Harper's first single, "One Step Closer," was featured on "Good Luck Charlie" in April. Radio Disney added the song to its playlist and Abercrombie & Fitch's Hollister stores used the song and Harper's image in promotional activities.

"One Step Closer" has sold close to 3,000 digital tracks since its March 31 release, while the album has sold fewer than 1,000 units since its April 12 bow, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The sales total for the album, which is available as a download at retailers like iTunes and Amazon, doesn't include CD sales at concert venues during Harper's current tour with Greyson Chance and Cody Simpson, which wraps May 18.

"I don't believe in putting out a single and then if it doesn't hit, drop the artist," Anders says. "We are here to develop artists -- there is no timetable to getting it right."

In addition to appearing on "Good Luck Charlie," Harper, 18, has danced in "High School Musical 2" and Nickelodeon's "Dance on Sunset." Anders signed Harper to a production deal when he was just 15 and "at 18," the producer says, "he was ready to make an album."

For Poor, the label's second signing, Anders and his wife, Nikki, who performed together as a duo before focusing on production, have developed a reality TV show, "The Poor House," which they're shopping to networks. The label has already placed a Poor song with the Facebook game Nightclub City.

Anders notes that Poor's debut album, which he says is about half finished, will be released "with a mixtape approach to help build buzz" before its release.

"With Shane, Disney offers platforms," Anders says. "With Zac, we have to create them."

Anders Music's latest signing is Ben Burgess, a singer/songwriter from Dallas who co-wrote "Chillin' in the Summertime" for the Jonas Brothers' Disney Channel show "Jonas

L.A."

"We will move much quicker; he figured it out on his own," Anders says of Burgess, who has landed songs on TV and in independent films as an unsigned artist.

A native of Stockholm, Anders grew up in Tampa, Fla., and moved to Nashville after graduating high school. He was playing bass for Christian artist Steven Curtis Chapman when he met his future wife Nikki Hassman, a singer with whom he has collaborated on writing songs.

Before joining the creative team of "Glee," Anders co-wrote the Backstreet Boys' 2000 hit "More Than That" and composed and produced tracks for Disney's "Camp Rock," "High School Musical 3" and "Hannah Montana: The Movie."

Anders Music's first three signings range in age from 18 to 24, and Harper's "One Step Closer" features a sunny, pop sheen that will be familiar to fans of the 128 Hot 100 hits that Anders has co-produced, nearly all of them with his musical partner Peer Astrom and "Glee" executive producer Ryan Murphy.

Still, Anders insists he isn't limiting his roster to the young performers he has been associated with through his work for Disney and "Glee."

"I'm 35 and I tend to gravitate toward younger artists," he says. "But if the singer is 30 and the music's great, I'll consider it."
