Tyler Perry is Hollywood's highest paid man (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Actor Tyler Perry, who has his own film and TV studio in Atlanta, ranks atop the list of Hollywood's highest paid men, in a new ranking from Forbes.com that includes director Steven Spielberg and singer Elton John.

Perry topped the list by making $130 million from May 2010 to May 2011, financial website Forbes.com reported on Monday.

The actor, writer, director and producer had his Hollywood breakthrough with 2005 film "Diary of a Mad Black Woman," which he created as a stage play. He dressed in drag to portray tough-talking family matriarch Madea, a crowd-pleasing role.

That movie led to a number of sequels, and most recently Perry has seen success producing the television show "Tyler Perry's House of Payne," which runs on TBS.

Holding the No. 2 position on the Forbes list with $113 million is producer Jerry Bruckheimer. He is behind the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise and had a hit with the latest movie in the series, which came out this year and earned over $1 billion at global box offices.

Steven Spielberg ranks at No. 3 with $107 million, Forbes said. The last film directed by Spielberg was released in 2008, but he has kept himself busy on a number of projects since then where he was the producer or executive producer, including action flicks "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" and "Cowboys & Aliens" and the upcoming science fiction TV show "Terra Nova."

"Rocket Man" singer Elton John, whose most recent tour grossed over $200 million, takes the No. 4 spot on the list with $100 million in earnings, Forbes said.

TV personality and music executive Simon Cowell, whose "The X Factor" singing contest is about to make its U.S. debut, ranked No. 5 with $90 million, Forbes said.

Writer James Patterson, author of "The Women's Murder Club" series of novels and such titles as "I, Alex Cross," ranks at No. 6 on the Forbes list with $84 million.

Rounding out the top 10 on the entertainment world list are: Phil McGraw, the TV psychologist and Oprah Winfrey protege from the show "Dr. Phil," with earnings of $80 million; actor Leonardo DiCaprio with $77 million; radio shock jock Howard Stern with $76 million; and pro golfer Tiger Woods with $75 million.

DiCaprio and Perry were the only actors on the list, and Forbes.com noted that Perry earned most of his money from producing and directing projects instead of appearing on-camera.

Lady Gaga, Katy Perry on China's banned music list (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) – Lady Gaga and Katy Perry have once again found themselves at the top of a music chart. Unfortunately, this chart is for songs that the Chinese government has given the thumbs-down to, CNN reports.

Gaga and Perry both made the list of 100 songs that China's Culture of Ministry has ordered websites in that country to remove by September 15, lest they face punishment.

Gaga racked up a staggering six songs on the list, all from her most recent album "Born This Way." "The Edge of Glory," "Hair," "Marry the Night," "Americano," "Judas" and "Bloody Mary" were all included in the ministry's announcement. (The album's title track was included in an earlier list issued by the government; the ministry has issued three lists of banned foreign songs since it began regulating internet content two years ago.)

Perry placed twice in China's latest banned-songs collection, with "E.T." and "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)."

Other notable entries on the ministry's litany of musical no-no's: Beyonce's "Run the World (Girls)," Britney Spears' "Burning Up," and the 1999 Backstreet Boys chestnut "I Want it That Way."

The crackdown applies to all websites, including personal sites.

According to the ministry, allowing the songs on its list to be shared and downloaded over the web has "endangered national cultural safety."

The tunes in question were chosen because they had not been registered with and reviewed by the ministry. According to ministry guidelines, all imported digital music needs to be translated into Chinese and submitted to the government before online distribution is permitted.

Gaga, Perry win big at VMAs, Beyonce steals show (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Lady Gaga picked up two awards and Katy Perry won three, including video of the year. But it was Beyonce showing off her new baby bump that stole the show at MTV's Video Music Awards on Sunday.

The MTV VMAs annually turn up the volume on surprises and outrageous acts by the world's top singers and bands. Last year it was Lady Gaga's meat dress and the year before the Kanye West and Taylor Swift speech mishap. But nobody saw the Beyonce's pregnancy coming -- except her husband Jay-Z.

Beyonce, whose hits include "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)," first appeared on the red carpet, posed for photographers and used her arms to outline the baby bump her long gown.

She later performed her song "Love On Top," telling the audience to stand up and saying, "I want you to feel the love that's growing inside of me." At the end, she took off her jacket, smiled broadly and rubbed her tummy.

In the audience, Jay-Z was congratulated by Kanye West and he gave Beyonce a big wave. On Twitter, one ardent fan had already started an account, http://twitter.com/#/BeyJayFetus, and it had more than 900 followers.

Lady Gaga opened the VMAs singing her song "You and I" and dressed in drag as her male alter ego, Joe Calderone. She stayed in the fictional character throughout the program and accepted awards for best female video and best message video for her song, "Born This Way."

"I feel so blessed to be here," Lady Gaga said onstage, holding the MTV moonman statuette for best female performer. "It doesn't matter how you are -- gay, straight, bi, lesbian, transgendered -- you were born this way."

KATY PERRY'S CUBE HAT

The other big winner of the night was Katy Perry. who took home video of the year, the night's top prize, with her triumphant song and video for "Firework."

She also picked up best collaboration for "E.T." featuring Kanye West, and a minor trophy for special effects with "E.T."

Perry, who is known for cute and colorful costumes accepted her award with a cube-shaped hat on her head.

"I'm very proud of the song, she said. "I feel like I am doing something right when I sing (it)."

Other awards went to Justin Bieber for best male video with "U Smile," and Tyler, The Creator took home the MTV moonman for best new artist with "Yonkers."

Britney Spears earned the honor of having the best pop video with "Till the World Ends." She was also given the special honor of the Michael Jackson video vanguard award.

Foo Fighters nabbed best rock video and Nicki Minaj, in a bright dress she said was inspired by Tokyo and its Harajuku district, took best hip-hop video for "Super Bass."

Shut out of the top awards was British singer Adele, who has been topping charts for weeks with her hit album "21" and its singles including "Rolling in the Deep." But "Rolling" did manage to earn awards in minor categories of art direction, cinematography, and editing.

Highlights included a duet by Jay-Z and Kanye West, singing a song from their new album, "Watch the Throne," and Lil Wayne closed the program in advance of his new album's release.

Legendary soul singer Tony Bennett and pop star Bruno Mars took part in a tribute to the late soul singer Amy Winehouse, who recently died. Bennett said some people just have talent and others don't.

"Amy had the whole gift," Bennett said.

Perry wins top award but Beyonce baby tops show (AP)

Beyonce and Jay-Z's offspring doesn't even have a name yet, but it was the indisputable breakout star of Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards, upstaging everyone, even Katy Perry's win for video of the year.

Perry, who had the most nominations coming into the show with 10, came away with three moonman trophies, including video of the year for the inspirational clip "Firework."

"I feel like I'm doing something right when I sing that song," said Perry, conservatively dressed in a cotton-candy pink jacket, a skirt and something best described as a Green Bay Packers cheesehead decoration.

But the night's big news came from Beyonce, who stole the show before it even began when she announced on the black carpet that after more than three years of marriage, the dazzling couple had produced the ultimate all-star collaboration. Dressed in a loose-fitting, off-the-shoulder red gown, she clutched the baby bump that so many celeb-watchers had been predicting since the two wed.

Later, Beyonce performed "Love on Top," and if Twitter hadn't already spread the news, her outfit gave clues to her impending motherhood; instead of her typical sexy outfits, she dressed in conservative spangled tux — but still danced around in her signature stilettos.

Beyonce didn't utter a word about the pregnancy, but ended the number by taking off her jacket and rubbing her swollen belly; in the audience, an elated Jay-Z hooted and clapped for his wife as Kanye West hugged him.

In an instant, Beyonce and her soon-to-be child managed to overshadow the night's events. Lady Gaga's much-hyped opening number, during which she performed as a greasy, leather-jacketed male alter-ego during a performance of "You and I," became less interesting. So did the evening's meticulously planned wild moments, from Nicki Minaj's origami-like outfit to a dance-off between the members of Odd Future and Jack Black, Will Ferrell and Seth Rogen.

There was one apparently unscripted moment during Jay-Z's performance with Kanye West of "Otis," off their chart-topping joint album "Watch the Throne." Near the end of the song, someone tried to walk on the stage, but was quickly apprehended by a crew member as a bemused Jay-Z looked on. It was the second time Jay-Z had someone walk on unannounced during an MTV performance; two years ago, it was Lil Mama.

Britney Spears captured the night's first award, for best pop video, and later was honored with an MTV Video Vanguard award for her visual legacy. Lady Gaga, sticking to her gender-switch shtick, leered at Spears as she paid tribute to her.

"She's a pop music legend, and the industry would not be the same without her," Gaga said. "I used to hang pictures of her on my wall and touch myself when I was in bed."

Later, Gaga fished for a kiss, but as Spears leaned in, she quickly pulled back, reminding viewers, "I've done that before."

The show at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles had no official host, though comedian Kevin Hart delivered an opening monologue and was featured in a series of vignettes during the show.

Adele had perhaps the highlight of the night as the seven-time nominee delivered a powerfully understated performance of "Someone Like You," off her top-selling "21" album.

Chris Brown also wowed with an aerial number, soaring above the crowd in between high-stepping choreography.

Russell Brand provided the evening's rare poignant moment during a tribute to his late friend, Amy Winehouse, who died a month ago after struggling for years with drug and alcohol abuse. Brand urged people to remember the 27-year-old for her music, and urged others suffering to get help.

"A lot of people just get the disease, not many people get the incredible talent that Amy was blessed with," said Brand, who successfully battled drug addiction himself. "Let's remember there is a solution ... that solution is available."

Tony Bennett, who joined Winehouse in what is believed to be her last song on his upcoming "Duets II" album, showed the audience a clip of the pair singing "Body and Soul."

Moments later, Bruno Mars sang one of her hits, "Valerie," but closed the song out with the refrain, "Amy, we'll miss you baby," as a somber-faced audience looked on.

Katy Perry ties Jackson record on Billboard (AP)

NEW YORK – When Katy Perry first came on the scene, some dismissed her as a one-hit wonder. Three years later, she's proven she's a multi-hit wonder, becoming the first woman to score five No. 1 songs from one album on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Her "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" set the precedent: It's the latest No. 1 from her platinum album "Teenage Dream." Only Michael Jackson had five No. 1s from one album before Perry, from "Bad."

But Jackson spent a total of seven weeks at the top with his "Bad" songs; Perry has been at the top perch now for a cumulative 18 weeks.

Perry's first major hit was the song "I Kissed a Girl" in 2008.

Katy Perry, "Teenage Dream" make Billboard history (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Pop princess Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" reached a new height this week as "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" became the album's fifth single to reach the top of Billboard's pop songs chart, marking the first time any album has amassed such a feat in its 19-year history.

If Perry's newest No. 1 also lands atop the Hot 100 later this week, "Teenage Dream" will be the only album other than Michael Jackson's "Bad" to generate five separate No. 1s. "Bad" was released in 1987, before Billboard began issuing the pop song chart.

Prior to "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" reaching No. 1, "Teenage Dream" was tied with Justin Timberlake's "FutureSex/LoveSounds" (2006-07) and Lady Gaga's "The Fame" (2009) which both had four singles snag the top spot.

"Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" became not only Perry's fifth No. 1 off "Teenage Dream" but her seventh overall, tying her with Lady Gaga for second-most No. 1s since the chart's inception. Rihanna currently holds the record with eight.

Katy Perry may beat Michael Jackson's singles record (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) – Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night (TGIF)" is the fifth song from her latest album to top Billboard's Pop Songs airplay chart.

That breaks a record previously owned by Lady Gaga and Justin Timberlake, who'd previously had a mere four tunes each from a single album land at No. 1 on that chart, which has been around for 19 years.

But Perry is poised for a far more significant achievement when the Hot 100 is announced later today. Michael Jackson holds the record on that historic chart, having topped it with five singles from his 1987 "Bad" album.

If "Last Friday Night" reaches No. 1 on the Hot 100, as expected, she'll tie Jacko's high mark ... and then, surely, try to outdo it by releasing a sixth single from "Teenage Dream's" treasure trove of smashes.

Meanwhile, Eric Church was indulging in some self-fulfilling prophecy when he titled his third effort "Chief." The upstart country singer turned out to be the commander-in-chief of the latest Billboard 200 album sales chart, as his latest effort debuted on top with 145,000 copies sold -- more than quadrupling the opening numbers for his previous album.

Female singers made most of the news over on the album sales chart, after Church's stately No. 1 bow. Adele fell from the top spot to No. 2, even though, at 83,000, her unit figures were actually up a little, as they have been almost every week.

Kelly Rowland's ultimate career destiny is still a question mark, as her third solo album, "Here I Am," entered at No. 3 on sales of 77,000 units -- a slight comedown for Beyonce's former sidekick, despite the urban ubiquity of her "Motivation" single.

Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black" sold 54,000 and moved up five spots to No. 4, in its first full week of predictably robust posthumous sales. Another white British soul singer, Joss Stone, enjoyed the week's final top 10 entry, as "LP1," her first independently released album, kicked in at No. 9 with 30,000 sold, a slight improvement over her previous major-label-backed effort.

One singles chart that Perry is not currently queen of is digital song sales. The top spot belonged, as it has for a month now, to LMFOA's unstoppable "Party Rock Anthem," which sold another 202,000 downloads. After a slow start last week, Jay-Z and Kanye West's "Otis" jumped up to No. 9 by selling 113,000, setting the stage for next Monday's release of the superstar collaborators' full album, expected to be one of the year's biggest sellers.

Katy Perry says "good people" help handle fame (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Katy Perry believes keeping "good people around" helps her deal with the pressures of being one of the world's biggest pop stars, which currently has her on a global concert tour and taking part in her first movie.

As the music world mourns the death of British singer Amy Winehouse, Perry told Reuters she is not tempted by the hedonistic lifestyle that has helped fuel the demise of talented performers before her.

Perry, whose hits include "Teenage Dream" and "Firework," said she is able to stay away from the wild, party life with the help of honest, supportive people around her, such as her British actor/comedian husband Russell Brand, himself a recovering drug addict who is now clean and sober.

"I like to keep good people around me, people that aren't always 'yes' people, people that sometimes it's difficult to be around because they're not 'yes' people," she told Reuters.

"My husband is definitely one of those, he keeps me accountable and, you know, he's not a fan, even though he is a fan...he supports me and loves me but he doesn't bullshit me, which is really important."

The 26-year-old California native, who is one year younger than Winehouse, tweeted on Saturday when Winehouse was found dead in her London apartment, "RIP Amy Winehouse. May she finally find peace".

Brand said on his website that his old friend Winehouse was a "genius" and recalled sharing with her the "disease of addiction," referring to both their public battles with drinking and drug use.

Perry told Reuters she currently is focused on keeping her life centered as her career has ballooned from singer to chart-topping star and now a role voicing a Smurfette in the upcoming animated movie, "The Smurfs"

"In the very beginning there was a lot of, 'Oh let's go celebrate,' always champagne and parties and, that was something that was taking energy from me that I needed to give to my career in that moment," she said when asked about the difficulties of balancing the pressures of a showbiz career.

SMURFETTE ROLE, WORLD TOUR

The singer transformed herself from what music critics thought might be a one hit wonder with the single "I Kissed a Girl" in 2008 to currently one of the world's biggest pop stars. Her album last year "Teenage Dream" garnered both chart hits, popular music videos and critical acclaim.

Now she is the sassy voice of Smurfette in the animated 3-D film, "The Smurfs," which she said she was drawn to because her evangelical Christian parents forbade her from watching "The Smurfs" TV series and other animated cartoons programs growing up.

"Maybe my rebellious side was, 'Oh you weren't allowed to watch 'Smurfs' growing up, so you've got the opportunity to be a Smurf in the feature film, go for it.' So I did that," Perry said.

Calling her acting career "early days yet" she hinted that, like her husband, she may branch further into Hollywood movies, including another role in upcoming "The Muppets" movie, but time commitments, she allowed, were a factor in balancing the music and film worlds.

"I have to keep that in mind when I actually decide to jump over to that world (films) but I think, when I do, I hope to do stuff that is very smart. With everything I do, there is a lot of thought that goes into it and a lot of hard work," she said.

In Her current "California Dreams Tour 2011," which began in February and runs until December, Perry plays up her carefully cultivated bubblegum pop image with sex appeal. But her sunshine image can have its drawbacks. She joked that she wished she didn't have to act so happy all the time.

"I've created this 'candy girl' who is so happy-go-lucky all the time. I wish she had just like a day where she was a little bit more flat-lined," said Perry.

Her image has recently undergone another transformation with new blond hair.

Perry recently earned a leading nine nominations for the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. "Firework" was nominated for both video of the year and best female video, while "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)" got a best pop video mention.

"For me, I think that the sexiness and sassiness is a part of my cards, but I think over time people have started to see, 'Oh there's more to that, it's quite interesting and very layered and dimensional and, yeah, 'she's not hard on the eyes'," said Perry.

Katy Perry crushes Gaga in MTV music video noms (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Pop singer Katy won a leading nine nominations for the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday, reducing eccentric superstar Lady Gaga to also-ran status with just three nods.

Sultry British singer Adele, whose second album "21" is the world's top-selling record this year, earned seven nominations -- all of them for her hit single "Rolling in the Deep".

Rapper Kanye West was the top male nominee, with seven nods for his futuristic "E.T" collaboration with Perry as well as his own music videos for "All of the Lights" and "Power".

Soulful "Grenade" singer Bruno Mars earned four nominations while Beyonce, Eminem, rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars and female rapper Nicki Minaj racked up three nods apiece. The awards will be handed out during a televised live show in Los Angeles on August 28. Winners are picked by public voting.

The nine nods for Perry, 26, were the climax of an extraordinary 12 months that has seen the once struggling gospel singer reinvent herself as a pop sex kitten with a string of hits like "California Gurls", "Teenage Dream" and "Firework".

"Firework" was nominated for both video of the year and best female video, while "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)" got a best pop video mention.

Perry will compete with Adele ("Rolling in the Deep"), first time VMA nominee Tyler the Creator ("Yonkers"), Bruno Mars ("Grenade") and the Beastie Boys ("Make Some Noise") for video of the year --the top MTV video music prize.

Lady Gaga was the big winner at last year's MTV music awards, taking home eight prizes, including video of the year for "Bad Romance".

But after months of hype for her new album "Born This Way" the flamboyant New York singer was sidelined in the 2011 nominations. Her three nods came for best female video for "Born This Way", while "Judas" will compete for art direction and choreography.

Rappers Wiz Khalifa, Tyler the Creator, and Big Sean will face off in the best new artist category against American indie band Foster the People and hip-hop singer Kreayshawn.

The TV audience for last year's MTV Video Music Awards was the biggest since 2002, attracting some 11.4 million viewers.

Katy Perry notches 9 MTV VMA Award nominations (AP)

NEW YORK – Katy Perry's "Firework" had enough sparks to help her claim a leading nine MTV Video Music Award nominations, including video of the year.

Perry — who hosted the network's Wednesday night special announcing the nominations — was also nominated for best female video for "Firework," and best pop video for "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)."

Adele tied Kanye West with seven nominations. The best-selling Brit will compete with Perry for top video with "Rolling in the Deep." Others in the category include the Beastie Boys for "Make Some Noise"; rapper Tyler, the Creator for "Yonkers"; and Bruno Mars for "Grenade."

Mars was nominated for four Moonman trophies. Other multiple nominees include Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Eminem.

The VMAs will air live from Los Angeles on Aug. 28.

Katy Perry cancels concerts after food-poisoning (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap) – When Katy Perry opens her mouth to sing, something beautiful tends to come out. When she opens her mouth to eat? Maybe not so much.

The "Teenage Dream" singer was forced to cancel a pair of concerts for Friday and Saturday after suffering a bout of food poisoning and severe dehydration, according to her official website.

The concerts, which were to occur in Chicago and St. Paul, have been rescheduled for next month. Perry fought through the illness to fire up her Twitter account and announce the new dates on Friday, writing, "Chicago and St. Paul -- I'm so sorry to have to postpone today and tomorrow's shows. But I'll be back 8/21 (CHI) and 8/23 (St. Paul)!"

Perry noted in a statement, "I am going to return in a few weeks to give them the very best show ever!"

Perry's next concert is scheduled for Regina, Saskatchewan, on Wednesday.

Katy Perry postpones Chicago, St. Paul concerts (AP)

MILWAUKEE – Katy Perry has postponed concerts in St. Paul, Minn., and the Chicago area because she's suffering from food poisoning.

A statement released by her publicist says the Friday show at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., has been rescheduled to Aug. 21 and her Saturday show at St. Paul's Xcel Energy Center is now set for Aug. 23.

The statement says the food poisoning led to severe dehydration. She performed ill at Summerfest in Milwaukee Thursday.

John Boler, vice president of sales and marketing at Summerfest, says Perry wasn't feeling well when she arrived. He says a doctor attended to her during the day and the performance.

He says she performed beautifully despite being sick.

Perry apologized but said she plans to give fans the best show ever when she returns.

Adele replaces Katy Perry atop U.S. singles chart (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Billboard) – British pop singer Adele, who has dominated the album charts on both sides of the Atlantic for the past few months, claimed the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart Thursday.

Her song "Rolling in the Deep" rose one place to No. 1, swapping places with Katy Perry's "E.T.," which had led the chart for five weeks.

The soulful song's coronation marks a female artist's first Hot 100 No. 1 since Kesha's debut single "TiK ToK" began a nine-week reign in January 2010. Coincidentally, Kesha was the last female act to top the U.S. single and album charts at the same time, with "TiK ToK" and "Animal," respectively.

Prior to "Deep," Adele had charted solely with the No. 21-peaking "Chasing Pavements," from her debut album "19," in 2009. Her current album, "21," looks set to log an eighth week at No. 1 on the U.S. chart when listings are updated next Wednesday.

Perry scored a milestone, too. The perky pop singer has spent an unprecedented full year lodged in the chart's top 10. She began her streak when "California Gurls" debuted at No. 2 last May and eventually spent six weeks at No. 1. It was followed into the upper reaches by "Teenage Dream," "Firework" and then "E.T."

As with Lopez, an "Idol" performance last Thursday aided Lady Antebellum, whose "Just a Kiss" blasted onto the Hot 100 at No. 7, marking the highest debut for a country group in the chart's 52-year history. It's the first single from the trio's forthcoming third studio album.

Pitbull's "Give Me Everything" jumped five places to No. 8, Rihanna's "S&M" fell three to No. 9, and Chris Brown's "Look at Me Now" held at No. 10.

Katy Perry Sues Magazine Over 'Other Man' Allegations

Newlywed Katy Perry is suing the Australian magazine NW over an article that suggests she cheated on actor/comedian hubby Russell Brand.

Reportedly, NW magazine ran a front-page story back in March claiming that the 26-year-old pop star had an "intimate relationship" with one of her producers, Benny Blanco.

Besides Perry, Blanco has also worked with stars like Britney Spears, Ke$ha, Justin Bieber, Mike Posner and Taio Cruz.

The headline read "World exclusive, Katy's other man." Perry, who tied the knot with British funnyman Brand in October 2010, decided to take legal action a month and a half after the March 11 story hit the stands, filing a lawsuit against the magazine's publishers on April 27.

The defamed Perry is not only pursuing damages but aggravated damages as well, which could cost the NW publishers a six-figure sum should she win the case.

We're guessing Katy is so not living the 'Teenage Dream' right now.
