Texas mayor for day, 11, renames street for Bieber (AP)

FORNEY, Texas – The 11-year-old "mayor for a day" of a Dallas-area city knows what her first major act in office will be: Renaming part of Main Street for teen heartthrob Justin Bieber.

A temporary sign for "Justin Bieber Way" went up Tuesday during a ceremony in Forney, Texas.

City Manager Brian Brooks says the request came from 11-year-old Caroline Gonzalez. She won a contest meant to get young people interested in municipal government. She's active in student council, recycling and community service projects.

Brooks says city officials weren't able to reach Bieber to invite him to Forney, which is about 15 miles east of Dallas.

The tween politician's act won't cost the community much. Officials say the sign was made for about $20 and would only be displayed Tuesday.

Bieber, celebs help Texas kids orphaned in crash (AP)

By JUAN A. LOZANO, Associated Press Juan A. Lozano, Associated Press – Wed Jul 27, 7:27 pm ET

HOUSTON – The plight of three Houston children who were orphaned and seriously injured as a result of a deadly car accident earlier this month prompted various celebrities — including Justin Bieber, Ellen DeGeneres, Britney Spears and Lady Gaga — on Wednesday to encourage their fans to donate to a new campaign that is raising money for their care.

Bieber and other celebrities asked their fans via Twitter and Facebook to donate to the "Show Your Hearts" campaign. The money being raised from the campaign launched Wednesday will go to a trust fund that has been set up for the children's care.

"It is a really sad story, but this is an opportunity for me and my friends to do something good for others," Bieber said in a statement. "We can use our influence to do good. We are just doing our part and I hope those kids get something positive out of it."

In its first day, the campaign raised more than $30,000. A Facebook page that had previously been created to highlight the trust fund and publicize fundraising efforts, including bake sales and lemonade stands, that have taken place in the Houston area and around the U.S. has helped raise more than $200,000.

The July 2 accident in West Texas killed the children's parents, Joshua and Robin Berry. Their sons, 8-year-old Aaron and 9-year-old Peter, were permanently paralyzed from the waist down. Their 6-year-old sister Willa suffered several broken bones. The family had been driving back to Houston from a vacation in Colorado when another vehicle crashed into their minivan.

Willa is now at home but her brothers remain hospitalized. After being treated at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, the brothers are now at Shriner's Hospital for Children in Chicago where they are undergoing physical rehabilitation treatment.

Reality TV star Kim Kardashian on Wednesday tweeted, "The family needs our help!! Such a tragic story!"

DeGeneres, on her television show's home page, asked fans to "join me in raising awareness and sending love and support to this family."

"We are also so grateful for the amazing efforts from Justin Bieber and his team to pull together the long list of celebrities supporting the kids," said Matt Berry, the children's uncle.

The Houston Rockets on Wednesday also announced a campaign, "10,000 Hugs-to-Help," to raise money that will be donated to the children's trust fund. The campaign will let Houstonians donate money in exchange for a hug from the team's mascot, Clutch.

"We are committed to assisting the various fundraising efforts that continue to be planned around our community in order to help provide Peter, Aaron and Willa with the support they will need in order to overcome the physical pain and devastating emotional trauma they have suffered," said Rockets owner Leslie Alexander.

Rep: Scuffle at Bieber event 'a misunderstanding' (AP)

By ALICIA RANCILIO, The Associated Press Alicia Rancilio, The Associated Press – Thu Jun 23, 10:19 pm ET

NEW YORK – A scuffle outside a Macy's department store where Justin Bieber was attending a promotional event Thursday for his new fragrance was "a misunderstanding," the singer's representative said.

"This was a momentary, well-intentioned misunderstanding that was quickly resolved, and the event went very well," said publicist Melissa Victor in an email.

The incident happened outside the Broadway entrance of Macy's in Manhattan.

Police said Bieber's representatives contacted them to say he wanted to go outside to greet fans. Police set up a small pen where he could do so.

Bieber left the pen and went straight to the main barricade holding back an estimated 500 people. The crowd surged forward and the barricade started to come down.

Police officers and Bieber's personal security detail then surrounded him to usher him back inside. Police said a 47-year-old man standing in the doorway refused to step aside and had to be physically moved. The man was issued a summons for disorderly conduct and released. Police learned later that he was a member of the singer's security team.

The 17-year-old Canadian singer was not injured in the scuffle.

Inside Bieber seemed unfazed. He gave interviews to the press, posed for photographs and with fans.

Eminem, Justin Bieber scoop Billboard Music Awards (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Eminem and teen idol Justin Bieber dominated the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday, winning six awards each with the 38-year-old rapper taking the top honor for artist of the year.

With Eminem absent, Bieber helped lead the way on stage beside some of pop's biggest current stars at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, marking the music magazine's efforts to revive what was once an annual event following a four-year hiatus.

Sporting his now short, spiky hair and a sparkling gold tuxedo jacket, Bieber beat singer Bruno Mars and rapper Nicki Minaj for best new artist and marveled to the audience, "I'm 17 ... every day is crazy to me because I see so many people and I get to make so many people smile."

The Canadian pop star, who has gained a huge following of "Beliebers" through YouTube and social media websites, also won awards for top pop album, streaming artist and song, as well as social and digital media artist. He thanked "everybody who helped me get out of my home town and live my dream."

Detroit native Eminem, who released the critical and commercial success "Recovery" last year, including the hit single "Love The Way You Lie" featuring singer Rihanna, won awards for top male artist, billboard 200 album, rap artist, rap song and rap album.

Rihanna, 23, kicked off the show with a performance of "S&M" from her 2010 fifth studio album "Loud," and was joined on stage by Britney Spears before going on to win three awards including top female and top radio artist of the year.

She thanked her biggest fan devotees, who call themselves the Rihanna navy, and hailed her native Barbados. The last Billboard artist of the year was Rihanna's former boyfriend Chris Brown, who pleaded guilty to assaulting her in 2009 and did not attend the awards.

Katy Perry won awards for top hot 100 artist and top digital songs, while British singer-songwriter Taio Cruz won the top hot 100 song of the year for his hit, "Dynamite."

"Need You Now," by Lady Antebellum won country song of the year. The title track from their second album introduced the group from Nashville, Tennessee to audiences worldwide and is now the most-downloaded country song ever, according to Billboard.

Taylor Swift, 21, who has swept music award shows in the past several years, won country artist of the year. She sold 1,047,000 first-week copies of her third album "Speak Now" in the United States last November, making it the fastest-selling new album in five years.

Accepting the top duo or group award for the Black Eyed Peas, Will.i.Am singled out "technology because without technology we wouldn't be here as an industry."

Beyonce was honored with the Millennium Award for her musical influence and hailed as a role model for women.

Neil Diamond, 70, won the icon award before performing his 1969 hit, "Sweet Caroline." Other performers included Keith Urban, Nicki Minaj and singer Cee Lo Green.

U2 won the top touring award for its current "U2 360 degrees" tour, which features revolutionary staging and has become the highest-grossing tour of all time.

"You can make classic albums in your bedroom and you can play the greatest show of your life on a one-string guitar, but we just don't do that," U2 frontman Bono told the audience.

The awards, with eligibility from Feb 28, 2010 to March 1, 2011, were based on multiple factors including chart performance, album and single digital sales, touring and streaming and popularity on social media sites.

Justin Bieber tells Japanese kids: things will get better (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters Life!) – Canadian pop star Justin Bieber met with Japanese children whose lives have been devastated by an earthquake, tsunami and an ongoing nuclear crisis that has forced thousands of families from their homes.

In Japan for several concerts, the 17-year-old singer spoke briefly with nearly a dozen kids, including some from Otsuchi, a northeastern town massively damaged by the March 11 tsunami.

One boy from Otsuchi read a card from the children to Bieber, thanking him for meeting with them.

"We have friends who lost their family and their homes, some have left our school. The town is covered with wreckage and it will take a long time to get back to normal," he said.

"But we will work hard for this. Please give us courage through your music."

Bieber, who had earlier told the children that they "were an inspiration," said in return that life would improve.

"Things can get better and things will get better. There are only good times to come," he said.

Bieber has already contributed to a charity album "Songs For Japan" with artists such as Lady Gaga and Bob Dylan, which has raised over $5 million for the victims of the disasters that have left nearly 25,000 people dead or missing.

Bieber performed in the western city of Osaka to a sold-out venue and next appears at Tokyo's fabled Budokan for another sold-out performance.

Justin Bieber documentary tops DVD sales chart (Reuters)

By T.K. Arnold T.k. Arnold – Wed May 18, 7:24 pm ET

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – DVD buyers had Bieber fever last week; Blu-ray Disc fans, not so much.

Paramount Home Entertainment topped the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart the week ending May 15 with "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never," while on the research house's dedicated Blu-ray Disc chart, Bieber debuted at No. 3, behind the month-old Warner release "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I" at No. 1 and another Paramount new release, the comedy "No Strings Attached," at No. 2.

"No Strings Attached," which grossed $70.7 million in U.S. theaters and stars Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher, also captured the top spot on Home Media Magazine's home video rental chart, giving Paramount the top disc seller and the top disc renter in the same week.

"No Strings Attached" debuted at No. 2 on the overall sales chart, while "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I" remained perched at No. 3 for the second consecutive week after three weeks at No. 1.

Sony Pictures's "The Green Hornet," the previous week's top seller and renter, dropped to No. 4 on the First Alert sales chart and No. 2 on the rental chart.

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I" also made its belated debut near the top of the rental chart, as its 28-day holdback from popular rental outlets Netflix and Redbox expired. After a month of availability at brick-and-mortar rental stores, "Deathly Hallows" still managed to muster a No. 4 finish, up from No. 45 the previous week underscoring the strength of mail-order and kiosks in today's rental business.

"Never Say Never" debuted at No. 7 on the rental chart, while Anchor Bay's "Blue Valentine" debuted at No. 8. "Blue Valentine," which earned $9.7 million in a limited theatrical release, also bowed at No. 7 on the overall sales chart and No. 11 on the Blu-ray Disc chart.

'Grumpy' Bieber draws tiny Hong Kong welcome (AFP)

HONG KONG (AFP) – Canadian pop sensation Justin Bieber usually draws legions of screaming girls at his sold-out concerts, but the mop-haired teen idol got a hugely disappointing greeting when he arrived in Hong Kong.

Just seven fans showed up at the city's airport to greet Bieber, the Sunday Morning Post reported, calling it an "embarrassingly low-key reception".

In contrast to the tiny turn-out, footage of his arrival posted on YouTube -- where the star made his name -- had been viewed nearly 135,000 times by Sunday, four days after he jetted in to the muted reception.

The paper said there were "three times" more bodyguards than female fans at the airport with the 17-year-old pop sensation "looking grumpy and walking straight past the small group of fans as they yelled out his name".

But some fans defended the heartthrob, saying his gloomy demeanour was due to him falling ill before arriving in the southern Chinese city.

"He didn't acknowledge us but that was probably because he saw more of the photographers," 15-year-old Ruth Boon told the Post, saying the light fan turnout was likely a result of it being a school day.

Bieber's concert on Friday in Hong Kong -- one of the last shows in his "My World" tour -- still saw a 13,500-seat stadium almost packed to capacity, the Post said.

The pop sensation soared to stardom after videos of his performances were posted on YouTube, with his album "My World 2.0" hitting the top of the US charts.

Justin Bieber fires back at "naughty boy" reports (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Justin Bieber says "CSI" star Marg Helgenberger is "kinda lame" for calling him "a brat" in a recent interview.

The teen idol took to Twitter on Monday to scold the actress for her comments and to deflect a separate report about his alleged misbehavior on a Qantas flight.

Helgenberger was widely quoted during the weekend as saying that Bieber, who appeared on two episodes of the long-running crime show, acted inappropriately on set.

"I shouldn't be saying this but he was kind of a brat," she told French radio network Europe 1. "He was very nice to me. But he locked one of the producers in a closet and he put his fist through a cake that was on the cast's table."

Bieber replied, via Twitter: "It's kinda lame when someone you met briefly and never worked with comments on you. I will continue to wish them luck and be kind."

A publicist for Helgenberger did not reply to an email seeking comment.

And on another subject, Bieber questioned the newsworthiness of a minor incident during his recent tour in Australia.

Local media said a flight attendant ordered Bieber to return to his seat after he strolled down the aisle as the plane was preparing to take off. Australia's SkyNews reported that she told him that "his behavior was a security risk and that he had been acting like a child and would therefore be treated like one."

Commented Bieber: "She was right and I sat down. That's news?"

He added: "I know who I am and sometimes people are just going to say what they want. Keep your head up and be the man your mama raised." (Reuters has edited the spelling.)

Justin Bieber is 17.

Charges to be dropped in Bieber NY mall frenzy (AP)

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Justin Bieber (BEE'-bur) has agreed to record a public service announcement on cyberbullying in order to resolve misdemeanor charges filed against one of his managers and a record executive after a frenzy at a New York mall.

The case stemmed from an incident in 2009, when thousands of unruly girls turned up at a clothing store on Long Island to see the teen pop star sign autographs.

Bieber manager Scott Bruan and Def Jam Records executive James Roppo were charged after police said they refused to help disperse the crowd.

Prosecutors told a judge Friday that they are dropping those charges. The record company and a management company pleaded guilty to fire code violations.

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice tells Newsday that having Bieber educate kids about bullying is "invaluable."

Australia teen charged over eggs thrown at Bieber (AP)

SYDNEY – Australian officials have charged a teenager with breaking into a Justin Bieber concert and throwing eggs at the Canadian pop star.

The 17-year-old appeared in a Sydney Children's Court on Thursday and was charged with breaking and entering, trespassing and malicious damage. He cannot be named because he is a minor.

Video footage of the concert last Friday at Sydney's Acer Arena showed several raw eggs smash on the stage, narrowly missing Bieber and his backup singers. They continued to sing and dance.

Police say the boy broke into the arena through the roof. He was released on bail and is to enter a plea next month.

Justin Bieber Breaks Up With Twitter ... Via Twitter

Pop superstar Justin Bieber is breaking up -- no, not with girlfriend Selena Gomez -- with Twitter. Yesterday, Bieber took to his Twitter page to announce that he is staging a temporary trial separation with Twitter.

The performer wants to stay focused on his craft. "I'm just excited at this pt to get on stage and perform. gonna take a little break from twitter and enjoy this time with my family until then," he tweeted. Bieber has since posted a few more residual tweets. Guess breaking up is easier said than done.

In fairness, the Biebs might be genuinely ticked off. On his recent trip to Israel the 'Baby' singer's hopes of meeting with the Holy Land's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were dashed. He also recently voiced his frustration over the paparazzi's lack of respect for his privacy during his spiritual journey. Bieber Fever knows no bounds.
