SKorean romance to kick off top Asian film event (AP)

SEOUL, South Korea – Korean movie star So Ji-sub has mixed feelings as he awaits his country's international film festival that kicks off next month with a romance that features him as a troubled former boxer in love.

The 34-year-old South Korean actor said Thursday in a news conference that he feels "nervous, honored and still dazed" by the fact that his movie "Always" will open the Busan International Film Festival, set to last from Oct. 6-14.

Considered Asia's top film event, the annual festival in the South Korean port city of Busan will draw internationally acclaimed directors like France's Luc Besson, Shunji Iwai of Japan and Taiwan's Apichatpong Weerasethakul, organizers say.

The actor So will be joined by fellow performers, including Japan's Joe Odagiri and Isabelle Huppert of France, organizers said. The South Korean actor was nominated for a best newcomer prize at the 2009 Asian Film Awards in Hong Kong.

So is considered an icon of the Korean Wave — a reference to the huge popularity of South Korean-made entertainment products around the world. He plays a retired boxer who falls in love with a woman slowly going blind in "Always," a 2011 film directed by Song Il-gon of South Korea.

Lee Yong-kwan, a festival director, wouldn't elaborate on why "Always" was picked as an opening movie, but he said it would help celebrate the opening of a modern $156-million theater in Busan that will host the event.

The festival is expected to draw a number of film investors and distributors from around the world. Lee said that the 16th edition will present more than 300 films from 70 countries and close with Japanese director Masato Harada's "Chronicle of My Mother."

Busan mayor Hur Nam-sik pledged to turn his city into a "sea of movies" during the festival. He said the organizing committee is working to allow fans to buy tickets through smartphones and receive information through digital tablets. South Korea is one of the world's most wired countries, and the use of smartphones and digital tablets has been increasing rapidly in recent years.

Nancy Reagan fine after stumble at California event (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Former first lady Nancy Reagan is "fine" despite stumbling at an event in southern California where she was caught by Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, a spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

The 90 year-old Reagan was using a cane and walking down an aisle arm-in-arm with Rubio when she lurched forward at the event on Tuesday evening at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley, some 30 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

Rubio kept her from hitting the ground by holding onto her arm, as others rushed in to help support her.

"She's absolutely fine," said Melissa Giller, a spokeswoman for the Reagan Library.

"She still attended the dinner afterward and enjoyed herself," Giller said.

Nancy Reagan stumbled because she tripped on a post in the aisle she was walking down, Giller said.

The stumble occurred at an event where Rubio, a rising star in the Republican Party who was elected last year to the Senate, gave a speech that introduced the Senator from Florida to supporters on the West Coast.

Nancy Reagan was hospitalized in 2008 with fractures to her pelvis and lower spine that she suffered in a fall.

She keeps a busy schedule with her work for the library and the foundation honoring her late husband, Giller said.

She became first lady in 1981 after the late Ronald Reagan was elected president, and she helped him survive blows such as an assassination attempt and cancer surgery during his eight years in the White House. Ronald Reagan died in 2004.

Stars aim for bargains at NY charity-fashion event (AP)

By ALICIA QUARLES, AP Entertainment Writer Alicia Quarles, Ap Entertainment Writer – Sat Jul 30, 6:35 pm ET

WATER MILL, N.Y. – Kelly Ripa, Rachel Zoe and Emma Roberts had their strategies mapped out as they joined other stars on a mission to find the best bargains at a high-fashion shopping event for charity on Saturday.

Celebrities such as Donna Karan, Gayle King and actor Chord Overstreet also attended Super Saturday, which raises money for the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. Jimmy Choo, Theory, Piperlime.com and One Kings Lane were among the 200 brand names that discounted their goods for the cause.

"You have to get a map and plot out the places you want to go," celebrity chef Katie Lee said. "You have to have a mission and a game plan."

Lee said she's scored amazing deals in the past, thanks in part to her hard-core focus: "I got about five Tommy Hilfiger bikinis for about twenty dollars and I still wear them and I love them, and I got cover-ups too."

Ripa had an alphabetical method to her buying spree, instead of jumping around from designer to designer. Once again acting as a co-host, she was excited to get a chance to shop — something that eluded her last time.

"Last year it did not go my way. I had a wedding to get to, so I was able to do the press line, but by the time I got off the press line, I was ushered into a car to go to the wedding. It was really sad," she said.

Roberts, who also co-hosted the event, said she was out the lookout for anything by the line Chloe.

Reality star, stylist and new mom Zoe did double duty by hosting a booth, as well as doing some shopping for clients. Zoe said she never has buyer's remorse over her Super Saturday purchases.

"I think just all of the finds you get and knowing every dollar you spend is for a great cause."

Rep: Scuffle at Bieber event 'a misunderstanding' (AP)

By ALICIA RANCILIO, The Associated Press Alicia Rancilio, The Associated Press – Thu Jun 23, 10:19 pm ET

NEW YORK – A scuffle outside a Macy's department store where Justin Bieber was attending a promotional event Thursday for his new fragrance was "a misunderstanding," the singer's representative said.

"This was a momentary, well-intentioned misunderstanding that was quickly resolved, and the event went very well," said publicist Melissa Victor in an email.

The incident happened outside the Broadway entrance of Macy's in Manhattan.

Police said Bieber's representatives contacted them to say he wanted to go outside to greet fans. Police set up a small pen where he could do so.

Bieber left the pen and went straight to the main barricade holding back an estimated 500 people. The crowd surged forward and the barricade started to come down.

Police officers and Bieber's personal security detail then surrounded him to usher him back inside. Police said a 47-year-old man standing in the doorway refused to step aside and had to be physically moved. The man was issued a summons for disorderly conduct and released. Police learned later that he was a member of the singer's security team.

The 17-year-old Canadian singer was not injured in the scuffle.

Inside Bieber seemed unfazed. He gave interviews to the press, posed for photographs and with fans.

Gaga gives heartfelt thanks at fashion award event (AP)

NEW YORK – It seems the fashion crowd, especially when fully decked out for Monday night's Council of Fashion Designers of America awards, can be pretty intimidating: CNN anchor Anderson Cooper said so, actress Naomi Watts said so, and even Lady Gaga said so.

On stage to accept her award as the year's top style icon, a soft-spoken, maybe even teary-eyed Gaga said she was nervous.

"All of you made me feel like a star before I was," she told the audience at Lincoln Center that boasted bold-faced names such as Marc Jacobs, Anna Wintour, Diane von Furstenberg, Donna Karan and Michael Kors.

She talked about how important fashion was in her life as a pathway to self-discovery, artistry and confidence. As a teenager, she'd save her money to buy vintage Thierry Mugler from a neighborhood thrift shop, checking in with the salesman regularly to make sure her favorite pieces hadn't sold while she was raising the cash. She planned her outfits for Friday night parties as if she was going to the Oscars, she said.

"As much as this award means to me personally ... I just want you to know how much this means to young Americans," Gaga said.

But the music star and style risk-taker, wearing a corset get-up by Mugler, a label now helmed by her friend Nicola Formichetti, got her swagger back as she recalled getting the text message from Wintour that she had been picked for the prize.

She said she thought the message was from a friend named Anna and replied with a bleep-worthy response. The text back from the Vogue editor-in-chief said, "How lovely."

That led to laughter — and so did Cooper's montage of his early days as a preteen model.

Cooper, a longtime friend of CFDA president von Furstenberg, said he decided to show his photos to prove his fashion cred since he was acting as master of ceremonies. (He also is the son of late designer jeans magnate Gloria Vanderbilt and worked as a fit model for both Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren, who made his tuxedo.)

"There was no way you'd be critical," he joked, "or that's what Diane said, anyway."

Watts, dressed in a metallic T-shirt-style gown by Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein, presented the top womenswear honor to Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler. But she seemed to find the awkward walk across a long stage intimidating in her high heels. "That was easy," she said as she reached the podium. "Fun doing it in a room full of supermodels."

Top models Doutzen Kroes, Karlie Kloss, Miranda Kerr, Alessandra Ambrosio and Chanel Iman were indeed in the house, on the arms of their favorite designers. Karolina Kurkova, in a striking hooded jumpsuit made of green sequins, read the names of the winners in the Swarovski emerging-talent categories: Eddie Borgo for accessories, Robert Geller for menswear and Prabal Gurung for womenswear.

Kurkova took a moment to sing for Gaga — "I'm your biggest fan," she said — and then Gurung asked during his speech if he could pose with Gaga. "That will make me the coolest uncle," he boasted.

But it was the nod from his fellow designers as well as retailers, stylists and editors that the rest of his family would find impressive, Gurung said. "I'm just a guy from Nepal. I will call my mother and say, `It's OK. I turned out fine.'"

The two standing ovations of the night went to photographer Arthur Elgort and designer Marc Jacobs, who was there for his "half-lifetime achievement award," according to presenter Sofia Coppola.

"This achievement is born of love, passion, creativity ... and a hell of a lot of hard work," said Jacobs, who is 48.

He added, "I believe we all know and feel the greatest reward is the process itself."

Other highlights:

_Kanye West, saying he was a huge fan, handed the international design prize to Phoebe Philo of Celine. He said he's been known to go into a Celine store and try on the clothes — womenswear, no less — "knowing that would get me bashed by the hip-hop blogs."

_Michael Bastian was named best menswear designer, and Alexander Wang as accessories designer.

_Jessica Alba, showing off her baby bump in a coral-and-purple gown by von Furstenberg, gave the CFDA Founders Award to InStyle fashion director Hal Rubenstein.

_Kors said he always enjoys this event because he likes being surrounded with "people who have a passion for fashion."

"Tonight is about not only people who make the clothes, but also the photographers, writers and the people who wear the clothes."

Depeche Mode singer honored at L.A. sobriety event (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Depeche Mode singer Dave Gahan, a former heroin addict who cheated death during the 1990s, was honored for his sobriety on Friday by a charity that helps musicians who have fallen on hard times.

The seventh annual MusiCares MAP Fund Benefit Concert attracted rock luminaries including Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler, Smashing Pumpkins singer Billy Corgan, Go-Go's guitarist Charlotte Caffey, Billy Idol and director Cameron Crowe.

Gahan headlined a performance bill that also featured alternative rock band Jane's Addiction, pop combo Paramore and Latino ensemble Ozomatli. His bandmate Martin Gore made an unannounced appearance, partnering with Gahan on their big hit "Personal Jesus."

Guests paid up to $1,250 each to attend and plenty of screaming Depeche Mode fans packed the relatively cheap $125 seats in the balcony of the downtown club. Dinner was served but alcohol was off the menu.

Also honored was concert promoter Kevin Lyman, the man behind the annual Warped tour of punk and emo bands.

Gahan, 48, told Reuters before the event that he lives a clean life now, although it requires discipline and self-control to avoid giving in to temptation.

"If you sit in a barber's shop long enough, you're gonna get a f---in' haircut," he said with a laugh.

"I don't hang out with people that are getting high because I'm not that strong. It's fun to party and I had a lot of fun, and I kind of used up all my chips in that department."

Gahan attempted suicide in 1995 by slashing a wrist, following years of drug abuse that had destroyed his second marriage and imperiled his membership of Depeche Mode. The wound was not deep enough to be life-threatening but he was locked up for psychiatric evaluation.

He almost died in 1996 when his heart stopped for several minutes after he overdosed. He finally cleaned up about two years later.

Gahan was introduced at the event by Aerosmith's Tyler, who has had considerably more difficulty staying clean, as detailed in the memoir he published this week.

"One of the hardest things an addict can do is to get sober and to stay clean," Tyler told the crowd.

A woman yelled out "One day at a time" and Tyler replied "Yeah, yeah baby!"

Gahan and a pickup band performed a selection of covers, including David Bowie's "Cracked Actor" and the Damned's "New Rose."

Depeche Mode, which rose to fame during the 1980s with gloomy songs targeted at disaffected youngsters, wrapped up its most recent world tour in Germany in February 2010. Gahan said he is working on songs for the follow-up to the band's 2009 album "Sounds of the Universe."

The MusiCares MAP Fund, run by the group that hands out the Grammys, provides access to addiction recovery for members of the music community.

Donald Trump Lashes Out at Jerry Seinfeld Over Charity Event

All is not well between Donald Trump and Jerry Seinfeld. The comedian reportedly pulled out from an event appearance and Trump called him out in an open letter.

According to Page Six, Seinfeld was scheduled to attend a Sept. 13 event for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the Eric Trump Foundation. However, he has since canceled his appearance due to Trump's negative remarks about President Obama.

"I just learned you canceled a show for my son's charity," Trump wrote to Seinfeld, "because of the fact that I am being very aggressive with respect to President Obama, who is doing an absolutely terrible job as our leader."

Trump, who is considering a 2012 presidential run, didn't stop reprimanding the comedian there.
"We don't care that you broke your commitment," he continued, "even though the children of St. Jude are very disappointed, and despite the fact that your manager clearly stated you are 'truly a man of his word.'"

Adding insult to injury, Trump took a shot at Seinfeld's NBC show, 'The Marriage Ref,' which Trump appeared on last year.

"What I do feel badly about is that I agreed to do, and did, your failed show, 'The Marriage Ref,' even though I thought it was absolutely terrible," Trump wrote. "Despite its poor ratings, I didn't cancel on you like you canceled on my son and St. Jude. I only wish I did."

A rep for Seinfeld said he agreed to appear at the event before Trump began questioning the authenticity of Obama's birth certificate. However, "Jerry has grown increasingly uncomfortable" with the 'Apprentice' head honcho.

"Jerry ... feels this kind of demagoguery has no place in public discourse," said the rep. "He has respectfully withdrawn from the event, and is making a contribution both to the Eric Trump Foundation and to
