The world still thinks Americans are "coolest": poll (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) – They may be witnessing their global superpower influence decline in the face of challenges from other emerging players on the world stage, but Americans have been voted the world's "coolest nationality" in an international poll.

Social networking site Badoo.com (http://www.badoo.com) asked 30,000 people across 15 countries to name the coolest nationality and also found that the Spanish were considered the coolest Europeans, Brazilians the coolest Latin Americans and Belgians the globe's least cool nationality.

"We hear a lot in the media about anti-Americanism," says Lloyd Price, Badoo's Director of Marketing. "But we sometimes forget how many people across the world consider Americans seriously cool."

Of course, not all Americans are cool far from it. Some like Snoop Dogg, Lady Gaga, Samuel L. Jackson, Johnny Depp and Quentin Tarantino are way cooler than others.

Americans, however, are the dudes who invented cool and who still embody it in many fields from music to movies and TV to technology.

"America," says Price, "boasts the world's coolest leader, Obama; the coolest rappers, Jay-Z and Snoop Dogg; and the coolest man in technology, Steve Jobs of Apple, the man who even made geeks cool."

Brazilians are ranked the second coolest nationality in the Badoo poll and the coolest Latin Americans, ahead of Mexicans and Argentinians. The Spanish, in third place, are the coolest Europeans.

The French are voted cooler than the British, and Canadians cooler than the Belgians. This may come as a relief for Canadians, who are sometimes viewed as chronically uncool.

Or, as Michael Ignatieff, the Canadian politician, once put it: "Paris, Texas stands as a metaphor for broken dreams; Paris, Saskatchewan just sounds ridiculous."

THE 10 COOLEST NATIONALITIES FIVE LEAST COOLEST

1. Americans 1. Belgians

2. Brazilians 2. Poles

3. Spanish 3. Turks

4. Italians 4. Canadians

5. French 5. Germans

6. British

7. Dutch

8. Mexicans

9. Argentinians

10. Russians

Michael Jackson's 53rd birthday: the world celebrates (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) – Michael Jackson would have turned 53 on Monday if not for his untimely death on June 25, 2009.

And though the musical legend has left this world forever, the King of Pop's life is being celebrated throughout the country in a variety of ways.

The big celebration is occurring in Jackson's birthplace in Gary, Ind., where the city is holding a four-day celebration that began over the weekend.

The Chicago Tribune reported that the extended bash -- marked by musical performances and a circus -- drew hundreds of fans over the weekend, and was attended on Saturday by Jackson's family, including his 13-year-old daughter, Paris, as well as his sons Prince, 14, and Blanket, 9, and his father Joe.

Jackson's mother, Katherine, was also on hand for the festivities on Sunday, TMZ reported.

Those who couldn't make it to Indiana still managed to find ways to celebrate.

In San Francisco, the singer's birthday was marked with a flash mob dancing to "Thriller." The semi-organized dance performance wound its way from the city's Ferry Plaza to Union Square, into the Mission District's Dolores Park and finally into the Castro District.

Jackson's influence on musicians is probably inestimable, and quite naturally the artists who've drawn inspiration from him are remembering him on his special day.

Former Tribe Called Quest rapper Q-Tip performed a special tribute to Jackson at his concert in New York City's Irving Plaza on Saturday.

"Michael Jackson was a huge influence on my music and was an inspiration to me and so many others," Q-Tip told the press. "I want to bring people together to celebrate the man, his music and his legacy that will undoubtedly live on forever!"

Meanwhile, Chris Brown weighed in on the milestone Monday, writing on his twitter account, "Happy birthday Michael Jackson!!!! Your the greatest!"

The celebration of Jackson's life and musical contributions won't stop thee. "Michael Forever -- The Tribute Concert" will take place on October 8 at the 74,500-seat Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.

Though the production has been beset by problems, artists including Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, the Jackson Brothers, Leona Lewis and Smokey Robinson are scheduled to perform.

Brad Paisley brings his world tour to London (AP)

LONDON – Brad Paisley is bringing a bit of country to the city — the city of London, that is.

The reigning Country Music Awards Entertainer of the Year is playing London's O2 Arena on Wednesday. He'll be expecting a warm welcome after two sold-out concerts in the British capital last year.

Paisley has already taken his "H20 II: Wetter and Wilder World Tour" across the United States. He kicks off his European swing in London, then has three dates in Ireland — Dublin, Castlebar and Killamey — before shows in Sweden, Norway and Denmark. He returns to the U.S. in September.

Paisley's seventh studio album is "This Is Country Music." The country star has also been heard in theaters recently, as he has two songs in Disney's animated film sequel "Cars 2."

Adele tops UK charts as music world mourns Winehouse (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) – Singer Adele and boyband The Wanted held their positions at the top of the British album and singles charts on Sunday, a day after the music world began mourning the death of soul singer Amy Winehouse.

Sales of the late 27-year-old singer's recordings rocketed in the hours after news spread of her death at her home in north London on Saturday.

The Official Charts Company said sales of Winehouse's albums had increased by 37 times in the few hours remaining in the period monitored for the weekly ranking. Track sales were up 23 times.

That was enough to propel her Grammy-winning 2006 release "Back to Black" to No. 59 in the album charts and to push the album's title track to 81 in the singles chart.

There was no change in the top five positions in the singles charts, with the Wanted's "Glad You Came" at No. 1 for a second week.

It was much the same in the album charts, where Adele remained at No. 1 and No. 3 with her releases "21" and "19," while Beyonce stayed in second place with her fourth studio album "4."

Korean "street boy" wows world with voice and courage (Reuters)

SEOUL (Reuters) – Dressed in blue jeans, a checked shirt and sneakers, the soft-spoken young contestant 40272 on "Korea's Got Talent" seemed a far cry from a typical opera singer.

But Sung-bong Choi's powerful baritone and his inspirational life story have now pulled at the heart strings of millions around the world thanks to the Internet, a story rivaling that of Susan Boyle.

Saturday he goes before the judges again in a semifinal round of the popular talent contest. But Choi, 22, now has as many fans from outside South Korea as at home and has been lauded by the likes of Justin Bieber.

"For me, singing is a wide bridge that links me to the people and the world," he said in an email to Reuters.

In May, in the first round, when a judge said she couldn't tell his occupation from the way he looked, Choi gave a nervous smile and said he was a manual laborer, to audience laughter.

"You mean, early in the morning and things like that?" the judge said, laughing.

A moment later, Choi hesitated when asked about his leaving the "family" portion of the application blank, then revealed in a soft voice that he'd been left in an orphanage at age three.

He said he ran away two years later after he was beaten by people there, and then lived on the streets in the city of Daejon, south of Seoul. He survived by selling gum and energy drinks, and sleeping "on the stairs or in public toilets."

Choi confessed just before his performance that he did not sing that well, but added "But when I sing, I feel like I become a different person." Then he launched into the Italian song "Nella Fantasia" (In My Fantasy).

His rendition left the audience and judges in tears.

"I just wanna give you a hug," one judge said.

In a country which has spawned countless K-pop boy and girl bands which have churned out hit after hit across Asia after careful grooming and rigorous training, Choi's rise to fame is even more phenomenal than his choice of song.

Like Susan Boyle, who shot to fame on a British TV talent show and became an Internet hit with a song from an Andrew Lloyd-Webber musical, Choi has become a global phenomenon.

His story has gone viral on YouTube, with more than 9 million hits. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BewknNW2b8Y&feature=player_embedded).

The likes of pop star Bieber, who was himself discovered on YouTube in 2008, and the "Perez Hilton" celebrity gossip website are among those lauding his talents.

"MUSIC IS MY BEST FRIEND"

While some on the Internet have questioned the authenticity of his story, the show's producer Kim Sae-jin stands by Choi.

Indeed, Choi's case was all too familiar during the height of the Asia financial crisis in the late 1990s, when authorities said thousands of children were abandoned by one or both parents. Many lived at home alone.

"I have lived from hand to mouth and had even given up on my life as I guessed there was no more hope in the future. During that time, music is my only best friend," Choi said in his email.

The turning point came at 14, when a woman from a snack bar near a bus station in Daejon helped him enter night school. He soon passed middle and elementary school equivalency exams, and teachers discovered his talent for singing.

"I still remember the moment when I first met a singer at nightclub when I was selling chewing gum. That was just a miracle," Choi said.

"Every melody of the song touched me deeply and made me feel alive amid happiness and joy. That highly motivated me."

"I want to be a person who gives hope and happiness with a song," he added.

Liz Taylor jewels taking world tour before NY sale (AP)

NEW YORK – Elizabeth Taylor's prized collection of jewelry, art, designer clothing and other memorabilia will go on an international three-month tour before it is sold in New York in December, Christie's auction house announced Wednesday.

The tour will begin in September and include stops in Moscow, London, Dubai, Geneva, Paris, Hong Kong and Los Angeles. It will end in New York, where Christie's plans a "museum-quality exhibition" of the late actress' collection that will fill its entire gallery space Dec. 3-10. The auction will be held Dec. 13-16.

Taylor, who was infamously married eight times to seven husbands and remembered for her roles in "Cleopatra" and "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?," was also known for her passion for opulent diamonds. She died in March at age 79.

She published a book in 2003 titled "Elizabeth Taylor: My Love Affair with Jewelry," and her collection has included some of the world's most expensive stones.

A portion of the proceeds from the exhibition admissions and publications related to the sales will be donated to The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation.

The screen icon's impressionist and modern art collection will be sold February at Christie's in London and will include a group of works she inherited from her father, art dealer Francis Taylor, Christie's said.

The auction house said details of the sales, exhibitions and tour dates would be announced in the fall. But it said Taylor's magnificent jewelry by some of the world's top design houses will range from white diamonds to elaborate custom-designed jewels. They will be sold in three sessions Dec. 13-14.

Some of the biggest names in fashion, including Valentino, Gianni Versace and Gianfranco Ferre, designed the star's haute couture and ready-to-wear fashion. Classic "Elizabeth Taylor looks" will be offered in an evening sale on Dec. 14, followed by three sessions of fashion, handbags, shoes, accessories and fine luggage the following day.

Film memorabilia from Taylor's Bel Air home, furniture and 20th-century decorative arts will be offered Dec. 16.

Christie's first announced it was selling the actress' collection in April after an agreement with her family. At the time, it didn't release any details.

Taylor won three Academy Awards, including a special Oscar for her advocacy for AIDS research and other causes.

She also won an Oscar for her performance in "Virginia Woolf" in which she played an alcoholic shrew in an emotionally sadomasochistic marriage opposite Richard Burton, whom she married twice in real life.

Hockey world searches for answers in Boogaard death (Reuters)

TORONTO (Reuters) – The hockey world was digesting the sudden death of New York Rangers enforcer Derek Boogaard with many starting to wonder whether it was possibly linked to a fight-filled National Hockey League career.

The 28-year-old forward, one of the game's most feared fighters who was nicknamed "The Boogeyman," was found dead in his Minneapolis apartment on Friday. The cause of death has not been determined but foul play is not suspected.

While autopsy reports are not expected for at least two weeks, sports talk shows and Twitter were abuzz on Saturday with debate about whether Boogaard's role as a hockey tough guy might have been a factor in his death.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported that Boogaard's family had donated the player's brain to Boston University researchers who are studying brain disease in athletes.

"The news that we have lost someone so young and so strong leaves everyone in the National Hockey League stunned and saddened," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman in a statement.

"The NHL family sends its deepest condolences to all who knew and loved Derek Boogaard, to those who played and worked with him and to everyone who enjoyed watching him compete."

Boogaard, who was selected in the seventh round of the 2001 NHL Draft, spent five seasons with the Minnesota Wild starting in 2005 before signing a four-year deal with the Rangers in July 2010.

At 6-foot-7 (2-meter) and 265 lb (120-kg), Boogaard was one of the NHL's most feared fighters, known more for his fists than his scoring finesse. In 277 career games, he scored only three goals but accumulated 598 minutes in penalties.

His final game was in December where he suffered a shoulder injury and a concussion during a fight.

Concussions have been sports hot button issue in recent months, particularly in the NHL.

Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, the league's biggest name, missed the finals months of the 2010-11 season after he sustained a concussion in January.

HEAD TRAUMA

Earlier this year, the devastating effects of repeated head trauma were highlighted by a post-mortem examination on the brain of Bob Probert, one of hockey's most famous brawlers.

The results showed Probert suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, a degenerative disease similar to Alzheimer's that is thought to be caused by repeated blows to the head.

Tributes from around the hockey community poured in as word of Boogaard's death spread.

Before the start of Game One of the Eastern conference final between the Boston Bruins and Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday, fan observed a moment of silence.

"It was devastating news," said Rangers Marian Gaborik, who was team mate of Boogaard's in Minnesota and New York. "He was one of the very best at what he did.

"Every team would have loved to have him, whether on the ice or off the ice as a great team mate."

"He's just the type guy who would be there for you whenever you needed him."

For all his ferociousness on the ice, Boogaard was described as a "big teddy bear" away from the rink donating his time to charitable causes.

In New York, he set up "Boogaard's Booguardians" and hosted military families at Rangers home games.

Georges Laraque, the Montreal Canadiens enforcer and another member of the NHL's fight club, rated Boogaard as the one of the best at his craft, who enjoyed his work.

"He's the toughest guy in the league," Laraque told the Toronto Star. "There's pressure that comes with that. But he was ready to take it.

"Contrary to a lot of other guys, he likes fighting and he's mean and tough.

"He was going to be a big threat, he was going to be ready. You don't think when you're 28 years old something like that was going to happen. It was a total shock to me."

Video: Britney Spears Releases Dance Version of 'Till the World Ends'

Britney Spears released a new video for her hit song 'Till The World Ends' featuring more dance footage of the pop star.

Spears tweeted last week about the alternate video, writing, "Just saw the final cut of the dance version of the #TTWE video. Not sure which one I like best?"

The original video for the song features Spears at an apocalyptic underground rave while asteroids fall from the sky.

The dance version, however, cuts out all of the apocalyptic scenes and instead adds in extended dance clips. The new video release comes amid reports that she's been using dance doubles in her recent videos.
