American dean of Paris literary scene dies at 98

PARIS (Reuters) - The man who nurtured a generation of aspiring writers at a rickety English-language bookstore in Paris, offering supper and a bed to literature fans providing they dusted the shelves or penned their memoirs, has died aged 98.

George Whitman, an American, died in the little apartment at the top of his Shakespeare and Company bookstore where he hung with Beat poets Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac half a century ago and until recently hosted literary tea parties on Sundays for anybody who cared to come by.

Decorated with a French medal for his contribution to the Paris literary scene, Whitman became a father figure over six decades to a stream of would-be writers from around the world who would curl up in his second-floor library for weeks on end.

Henry Miller once called his store, open since 1951 on the arty left bank of the Seine, "A wonderland of books."

"Thousands of people from around the world ate his clam chowder and strawberry ice cream and survived thanks to his generosity," said Pia Copper, 38, an art dealer who worked at the store in the 1990s and remained a close friend.

"He offered them the possibility of living across from Notre Dame for free while they penned their first novel or painted a picture. There were a lot of books and poems written there."

The green-fronted store was shuttered on Thursday and well-wishers left votive candles, flowers and novels at the door, where a formal announcement of his death said he would be missed by bibliophiles around the world.

Handwritten tributes cellotaped to the store thanked Whitman for his generosity in providing a haven for "aficionados" of literature or apologized for not finishing novels.

"I'm sorry I was so bad at the poetry reading," said one note. Others were left inside a wine bottle whose label read: "Messages in a bottle: For George. Something for you to read on your trip."

RAG AND BONE

Whitman, who liked to dub his bookstore "The Rag and Bone store of the heart," after a T.S. Elliot poem, was born in New Jersey and spent part of his childhood in China.

After studying journalism and travelling extensively, he moved to Paris in 1948 with a bicycle and a cat as his only possessions and slept in a university garden, as he liked to tell the story. Once settled, he began collecting books and started a lending library in his dingy hotel digs.

He opened his bookshop, "Le Mistral," in 1951 and renamed it several years later as he incorporated books from the original Shakespeare and Company store frequented by James Joyce and Ernest Hemingway before it shut down during World War Two.

Opened by American-born Sylvia Beach in the 1920s, also on the Left Bank, the original store won fame for publishing James Joyce's banned book "Ulysses."

Whitman's shop became a stopover for writers like Miller, James Baldwin, Samuel Beckett, Anais Nin and later on Lawrence Durrel, William Burroughs, Gregory Corso and Ginsberg. Beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti became one of Whitman's closest friends.

It grew into a tourist landmark and gathering point for Anglophone expatriates, attracting eccentrics, nomads and dreamers. When an American ambassador once popped in for a visit, Whitman cheekily offered her a corner to sleep in.

Living by a motto taken from Yeats -- "Be not inhospitable to strangers lest they be angels in disguise" -- Whitman helped out bohemian souls in return for them lending a hand in the shop or cooking supper. Hundreds left behind handwritten notes telling their life story.

"I was in my early 20s and just arrived in Paris when I wandered in and sat down to read. George appeared and said 'You're an old China hand like me. You start work tomorrow," said Pia, who was just starting out importing art from China.

Whitman suffered a stroke in October, but refused to stay in hospital. He had an ambulance crew carry him home, up two cramped flights of stairs and past wall-to-wall bookshelves to his bed, laughing with happiness to be back.

The store was his whole life and he rarely left it, except to take the odd trip to wildly exotic locations, Pia recounted.

Whitman, who penned many essays but never wrote a book of his own, will be buried on December 22 in Pere Lachaise cemetery, resting place of such literary luminaries as Oscar Wilde, Moliere and Jim Morrison. His family plans to mark his grave with a statue of Don Quixote, one of his favorite fictional characters.

His daughter Sylvia, who sat at his bedside as he grew weaker but refused to stop reading, will now run the store.

Paris Hilton's ex takes DUI plea deal in Vegas (AP)

LAS VEGAS – Paris Hilton's ex-boyfriend was fined $585 and ordered Wednesday to stay out of trouble as he settled drug charges stemming from a Las Vegas Strip traffic stop with the celebrity socialite last year.

Cy Waits, 35, was sentenced after pleading no contest to misdemeanor driving under the influence of drugs. Felony and misdemeanor drug charges were dropped.

Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Bill Kephart ordered Waits to attend DUI and "victim impact" classes, gave him a 30-day suspended jail sentence, and warned him not to make the same mistake twice.

"If you are arrested for another DUI during the pendency of this case, I don't care if it's alcohol or drugs, you will do six months in the Clark County jail," the judge said. He set a Nov. 23 date to review Waits' case.

Waits emerged from the courtroom with his lawyer, Richard Schonfeld, and said he was glad to have the case behind him.

The former Las Vegas nightclub manager declined to talk about his relationship with Hilton, calling it a "chapter in my life that's closed."

Waits was arrested Aug. 27, 2010, after a Las Vegas police officer reported a "vapor trail" of marijuana smoke wafting from a black Cadillac Escalade with Waits at the wheel.

Hilton, a passenger in the vehicle, was arrested after police said a small bag containing 0.8 gram of cocaine fell from her Chanel purse as she reached for a tube of lip balm.

The 30-year-old celebrity heiress pleaded guilty last September to misdemeanor cocaine possession and obstruction charges. She is serving a year of probation, with a Las Vegas judge set to review her case Sept. 20.

Paris Hilton ex-beau seeks plea in Vegas drug case (AP)

LAS VEGAS – Paris Hilton's ex-boyfriend has a court date Wednesday to take a plea deal to settle criminal drug charges stemming from a Las Vegas Strip traffic stop with the celebrity socialite last year.

Cy Waits, 35, a former Las Vegas nightclub manager, didn't appear in court Monday while his lawyer, Richard Schonfeld told Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Bill Kephart that an agreement had been reached in the case.

Schonfeld didn't provide details. He said outside court he couldn't disclose terms ahead of time. Prosecutor L.J. O'Neale wasn't immediately available for comment.

Waits could face up to four years in state prison if convicted of a felony charge of being under the influence of a controlled substance, and less than a year in the Clark County jail in Las Vegas on misdemeanor marijuana possession and driving under the influence charges.

Paris Hilton opens new handbag store in Manila (AP)

MANILA, Philippines – Paris Hilton has opened a new handbag store in a Manila mall.

Hundreds of star-struck fans, local celebrities and journalists jostled to see her Thursday, cameras ready. Wild cheers erupted when Hilton told the crowd "I love you" in the local Tagalog language. She said she'll miss Manila and plans to be back soon to open a resort-inspired residential project.

"I will be back very soon `coz I love it here," she said. "I've had the best time."

She signed bags bought from the Paris Hilton Handbags and Accessories store at the SM Megamall, her fourth shop in the country. She also posed for pictures with fans before rushing to catch a flight to Los Angeles.

A male fan who brought a portrait he made of Hilton got a kiss, much to his thrill.

The heiress-turned-TV star reportedly lost two mobile devices on her flight to the Philippines. She told The Associated Press the phones have not been found.

In 2005, hackers gained access to Hilton's Sidekick cellphone and famously splashed the private mobile numbers of her celebrity friends online.

The latest loss apparently didn't leave Hilton cut off — she has been constantly tweeting since she arrived Sunday.

Man is charged with stalking Paris Hilton (AP)

LOS ANGELES – A man accused of stalking Paris Hilton has pleaded not guilty to felony charges that could land him in jail for five years.

City News Service says 36-year-old James Rainford entered pleas Friday in Los Angeles to two felony stalking charges and three misdemeanor counts of disobeying a court order to stay away from the socialite.

Rainford was arrested on the Fourth of July after paparazzi recognized him outside Hilton's Malibu home. It was his third arrest in less than a year related to Hilton.

Rainford is jailed on $150,000 bail. Jail records don't indicate whether he has an attorney.

Rainford was released from jail in May after serving time for misdemeanor battery. Authorities say he had tried to grab Hilton's then-boyfriend outside a courthouse earlier this year.

Paris Hilton stalker arrested on Malibu beach (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – A 36 year-old man accused of stalking Paris Hilton was arrested after being spotted standing on the beach and looking into her Malibu home, authorities said on Tuesday.

James Rainford, who is barred by a previous court order from being within 200 yards of Hilton, was taken into custody on Monday, the Los Angeles Sheriff's department said.

Rainford was found trespassing on Hilton's house in the Hollywood Hills late last year, and in April he was convicted of attacking the socialite's then boyfriend outside a Los Angeles court house.

Celebrity website TMZ.com reported that Hilton watched from her balcony on Monday as a shirtless Rainford was handcuffed on the beach and arrested for violating the stayaway order.

Man arrested outside Paris Hilton's home charged (AP)

By ANTHONY McCARTNEY, AP Entertainment Writer Anthony Mccartney, Ap Entertainment Writer – Tue Jul 5, 8:12 pm ET

LOS ANGELES – A man arrested outside Paris Hilton's coastal home was charged Tuesday with disobeying a court order to stay away from the socialite.

Sheriff's deputies arrested James Rainford on Monday, the third time in less than a year that the 36-year-old has been jailed for trying to meet Hilton.

He pleaded not guilty Tuesday afternoon and was being held on $30,000 bail, district attorney's spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said.

Jail records do not indicate whether he has an attorney.

Authorities said Rainford was arrested Monday after paparazzi who were outside Hilton's home recognized him.

A judge issued a restraining order in October after Rainford was arrested outside Hilton's Hollywood Hills home.

He was arrested earlier this year after he attempted to grab Hilton's then-boyfriend, Cy Waits, outside a Los Angeles courthouse where the pair testified against another man who attempted to burglarize the hotel heiress' home in the Hollywood Hills.

Rainford pleaded no contest in April to misdemeanor battery and was sentenced to 227 days in jail, but records show he was released May 20.

Rainford was released after serving less than a month because of jail overcrowding and mandatory credits imposed by the state, sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

He is due back in court July 15.

Accused Paris Hilton stalker jailed (AFP)

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – A 36-year-old man previously accused of stalking heiress Paris Hilton was charged and jailed Tuesday for violating a judge's stayaway order, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's office said.

James Brian Rainford was arrested Monday for trespassing near Hilton's Malibu home, and was subsequently jailed in breach of the order from last January that prohibited him from coming within less than 200 yards (183 meters) of Hilton. His bail was set at $20,000.

"My stalker needs to leave me alone," Hilton said on her Twitter account Tuesday.

Paparazzi photographers outside Hilton's home had called police after they recognized Rainford, who was arrested last October for harassing the heiress.

In April, Rainford also attacked Hilton's then-boyfriend Cy Waits, for which he was sentenced to 227 days in jail. He was released early, as is customary for minor offenses in California.

Man arrested over Paris Hilton restraining order (AP)

MALIBU, Calif. – Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies have arrested a man accused of violating a restraining order that bars him from being within 200 yards of Paris Hilton or her home.

The sheriff's department says in a statement that someone called authorities Monday afternoon and reported a man standing on a beach looking into Hilton's Malibu home.

The caller recognized the man as James Rainford. He pleaded no contest to a battery charge in April after Hilton's then-boyfriend Cy Waits was attacked outside a courthouse.

Deputies who responded were met by numerous paparazzi who pointed out Rainford standing on the beach.

Rainford was arrested without incident and is being held on $20,000 bail.

The arrest comes less than a week after a man convicted of trying to burglarize Paris Hilton's home was sentenced to two years in prison.

Man gets two years for Paris Hilton burglary attempt (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – A man who tried to break into Paris Hilton's house while wielding two large knives was sentenced to two years in prison on Wednesday.

Nathan Lee Parada, 32, has already spent about 10 months behind bars since being arrested at the socialite's Los Angeles home last August.

Hilton posted a photo on her Twitter page of police outside her house and a man in handcuffs. She wrote, "just got woken up to a guy trying to break into my house holding 2 big knifes (sic)."

Parada was convicted of one count of attempted first-degree residential burglary in April after jurors spent less than an hour deciding his fate. He faced a three-year term. Van Nuys Superior Court Judge Michael Kellogg recommended that he receive mental health counseling while in prison.

Fergie shakes it at Paris fashion AIDS gala (AP)

PARIS – The Black Eyed Peas, Fergie, Miami Heat star Dwayne Wade and designers Marc Jacobs, Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren added A-list sparkle to a sumptuous AIDS charity gala on the margins of Paris' menswear week.

An auction of luxury lots — including a red-crocodile covered bottle of Piper Heidsieck Champagne, invitations to haute couture fashion shows and VIP tickets to a Black Eyed Peas concert — fetched tens of thousands of dollars for the American Foundation for AIDS Research, a charity founded by the late Elizabeth Taylor.

Fergie and Dutch design duo Viktor & Rolf were honored for their contributions to the fight against AIDS at Thursday night's dinner, where other A-list guests included German-born actress Diane Kruger, burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese and actor Jeremy Iron's son, emerging model Max Irons.

Fergie tried to take to the stage to receive her award but was waylaid by her skirt, a black Louis Vuitton number so narrow she couldn't lift her leg high enough to climb up the steps. Vuitton designer Jacobs, the man behind the hobbling garment, had to help her hop up the stairs.

Finally onstage, Fergie did a victory booty shake and waxed nostalgic about the start of her blockbuster career, saying she "never wanted to be a role model." But as she learned how she could use her celebrity to support causes that she cared about, "I learned to take responsibility for helping other people and started to make up for all the crap I used to do."

The evening also included performances by Irish singer Roisin Murphy and French duo Brigitte, whose head-to-toe sequin outfits stood out even among the outrageously dressed crowd. Other top looks included the two Paris party promoters wearing Swarovski-crystal-covered masks complete with bling bling antlers.

Last year, the first annual Paris amfAR gala raised $180,000 for AIDS research.

Paris bar honors The Doors; may have to close them (AP)

PARIS – The walls of the Paris bar are plastered with images of Jim Morrison and The Doors, and a bust of the lead singer presides over the beer tap — all part of the owner's lifelong passion for the band. But an attorney for the group doesn't love it madly.

Christophe Maillet said he received a letter from a Beverly Hills, Calif.-based attorney warning that "The Doors do not want to be seen as having approved of your establishment and also the consumption of alcohol."

The April 21 letter — signed by Anthony Keats, The Doors' intellectual property lawyer, and shown Friday to The Associated Press — urged Maillet to remove images of the group from his bar within three months.

Not an easy task.

The walls feature oversized close-ups of Morrison and framed photos and posters of the band. And there's that bust of the flowing-locked singer at the tap.

Morrison, known for a partying lifestyle, died in 1971 at age 27 of heart failure in his bathtub in Paris — just minutes from Maillet's bar. Morrison's grave at Pere Lachaise cemetery remains a pilgrimage site for fans.

Doors lawyer Keats did not respond to email and phone messages Friday about the letter.

The decorations are from Maillet's own collection — the fruit of 25 years as a dedicated fan, he said.

"I found my passion for Jim Morrison at the age of 12," said the soft-spoken bartender. "Then I found a profession that could go along with it.

"Since I started in this business, my goal was to start a bar dedicated to Jim Morrison."

After nearly a decade spent working at other people's establishments, Maillet's dream came true nine months ago when he opened the "Lezard King" — a play on Morrison's nickname, the "lizard king." Because he worried about possible copyright issues, Maillet used the French word for lizard, he said.

On the menu are cocktails of Maillet's own creation that he baptized after Doors' songs: the "Light My Fire" blends rum, Cointreau and citrus juices; the "Roadhouse Blues" mixes tequila, Cointreau and blue curacao.

Maillet won't say how much he invested in the bar located in Paris' hip Bastille neighborhood but said it amounted to his life savings.

Maillet doesn't know what could happen if the legal action goes ahead — the attorney's letter doesn't specify — but he said: "I guess worst-case scenario is that they could close the bar."

Maillet, who does not have a lawyer, wrote The Doors' attorney back but said he hasn't yet received a response.

He said in order to appease The Doors, he'd be willing to add other 1960s and '70s bands to the bar's decoration. The letter also demands that the name of the bar be changed — something Maillet flatly refuses.

He said he knows of about a dozen Doors-themed bars — from Amsterdam to India — and it's unclear whether others have faced similar legal woes.

"I didn't do this to destroy (The Doors') image or to dirty it," Maillet said. "I did it to make them happy."

Rockers The Doors threaten Paris bar (AFP)

PARIS (AFP) – Lawyers for US rock group The Doors threatened legal action against a Paris bar devoted to the band, saying it did not want to be associated with a drinking establishment, the landlord said Thursday.

"I have received a letter from the lawyers of The Doors who are giving me 60 days to change the bar's posters, its name, the name of its cocktails and the website," Christophe Maillet, manager of the Lezard King bar, told AFP.

"The Doors did not want to be associated with a drinks bar," added Maillet, who opened the venue in September last year.

The bar's name is a tribute to the band's frontman Jim Morrison, who was known as the Lizard King after coining the term in a poem. It serves cocktails named after Doors songs such as "Soft Parade" and "Light My Fire".

"I thought I was doing a good thing, burnishing the image of The Doors," Maillet said. "I didn't ask permission but I suspected they would immediately refuse if I did."

He said he had told the US lawyers he would bend to their demand if they insisted.

Morrison died in Paris of a drug overdose in 1971 and is buried there in the Pere Lachaise cemetery.

Paris Hilton Responds to 'Worst Driver' Claim: It Wasn't Me!

Paris Hilton was blasted by 'Fairly Legal' star Sarah Shahi last week for being the "worst driver ever" for reportedly almost hitting her. However, Hilton told Extra that it definitely was not her driving that day.

"I was so shocked when I read that, too," Hilton said of the rumors flying around that she almost hit Shahi while driving.

"First of all, I wasn't even driving that day," she said. "I just came back from Vegas with my boyfriend -- and we were home relaxing. I hadn't even been in the car that day. I literally came with a driver from the airport went to my house."

Hilton continued, "Then later on I read that, I'm like 'Dude, I wasn't even driving,' so I don't know. Maybe it was some other blonde girl who looked like me."

Could a Paris Hilton imposter be a fault for the incident? Hilton believes so.

Shahi ranted on Twitter Friday, calling out Hilton's poor driving skills and taking personal digs at the reality star.

"Paris Hilton- worst driver ever. Almost hit me, then ran a stop sign.what if there was a kid around the corner, you dumb b--ch," Shahi wrote. She continued on to call her a "horrible excuse for a human being" and a "blonde piece of sh-t" but added, "I wouldn't be as pissed if I wasn't a mom."

Paris Hilton sued by jewellers

Posted by heatworld 07 April 2011 20:59

It’s definitely been a while since we’d had an installment in the seemingly endless drama that is the life of Paris Hilton, and so we weren’t terribly surprised to hear that everyone’s favourite heiress/serial engagement maker is currently being sued by a jewellery company.

Remember that enormous robbery at her LA estate in December 2008, when she was relieved of $2.8 million worth of bling? Well, last year police caught the burglary ring, which also targeted Megan Fox, Orlando Bloom and Lindsay Lohan (like Linds doesn’t have enough problems already!), and recovered most of the missing jewels. These were duly returned to Paris. But, according to German insurance firm Allianz, Paris then failed to give them back to owners Damiani, who she’d only borrowed them from in the first place.

Not only that, but it seems she isn’t very good at looking after other people’s property. According to the lawsuit Paris was meant to stash the goodies in a safe when not wearing them, but hadn’t bothered to. It claims, "On December 18, 2009, Ms Hilton left the front door to her mansion unlocked. Like the front door, Ms Hilton also left the safe unlocked that was supposed to be used to secure the loaned Damiani jewelry."

Apparently the thief strolled into the mansion, sweeping all the jewellery into a Vuitton handbag and walking off with it. No wonder Damiani are causing trouble. We get annoyed when people leave our diamonds lying around too.
