Costa Rica names suspect in singer Cabral killing (AP)

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – A Costa Rican is suspected of being behind the ambush last month that killed Argentine folk singer Facundo Cabral and wounded a Nicaraguan businessman who is believed to have been the target, authorities said Tuesday.

Alejandro Jimenez Gonzalez is accused of leading an organized crime group involved in money laundering with operations around Central America, Costa Rican Attorney General Jorge Chavarria told reporters.

Chavarria said authorities believe a rift over a theft of illegal drug money led to the July 9 attack that Guatemalan authorities think was aimed at Henry Farinas, who survived. Farinas was driving Cabral to the airport when they were ambushed.

Costa Rican authorities said they raided five properties Tuesday believed linked to Jimenez or his family. They say he may have fled to Panama.

Three other suspects have been arrested in Guatemala in relation to the attack.

Guatemala's chief prosecutor, Claudia Paz y Paz, has said the men appeared to have had Farinas under surveillance for about a week before the attack.

A Guatemalan investigator, who would not allow his named to be used, has said the suspects told authorities they didn't know the famous folk singer was in the car.

Cabral, who was 74, rose to fame in the early 1970s as part of a generation of singers who mixed political protest with literary lyrics.

Chicago names street 'Buddy Guy Way' (AP)

CHICAGO – Chicago blues great Buddy Guy now has his own street.

The city of Chicago has renamed the stretch of Wabash Street in front of his club, Legends, "Buddy Guy Way."

The blues guitarist says he "wanted to cry" when the honor was bestowed Sunday. Chicago Alderman Bob Fioretti read a proclamation from Mayor Rahm Emanuel, and the crowd sang "Happy Birthday" as Guy received a copy of the street sign.

He celebrated his 75th birthday on July 30.

Guy was born in Louisiana in 1936 and moved to Chicago in 1957. He started a career as a session musician, backing blues legends such as Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson and Little Walter before recording his own music. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.

Czech Republic names street after Ronald Reagan (AFP)

PRAGUE (AFP) – The Czech Republic Friday renamed a street in its capital Prague after former US president Ronald Reagan, highly regarded in the region for having helped hasten the demise of communism.

Former US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice attended the ceremony, held to mark the 100th anniversary of Reagan's birth.

"Ronald Reagan was remarkable because he believed in the freedom so deeply, but he was even more remarkable because he believed that what ought to be had to be and so he acted on this policy," Rice said at the televised ceremony.

Republican Reagan, who was president from 1981 to 1989, is celebrated in former Soviet satellite states for a tough line credited with having pushed the Kremlin to the wall.

Czech Environment Minister Tomas Chalupa said Reagan's stance struck a chord in his country, whose 1989 Velvet Revolution became a symbol of the peaceful overthrow of the region's regimes.

"He beat communism using means that are dear to we Czechs. He decided to go against the grain and tell the truth," Chalupa said at the ceremony.

Reagan died in 2004.

He is the fourth US president to have a street named after him in Prague, after independence leader George Washington, head of state from 1789 to 1797, Woodrow Wilson (1913-1921) and Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1933-1945).

Ronald Reagan Street, near the US ambassador's residence in Prague, replaces part of a longer road named after Czech writer and historian Zikmund Winter (1846-1912).

Rice's presence was met by protests from a small, vocal group of demonstrators.

"Democracy is great but sometimes it's noisy," she said.

On Wednesday, Rice attended a ceremony in Budapest, capital of ex-communist Hungary, where a statue of Reagan was unveiled.

A bust of Reagan was already erected in a Budapest park in 2006.

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon reveal baby names (AP)

NEW YORK – Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon have revealed the names they've picked out for their newborn boy and girl: Moroccan and Monroe.

The couple chose to name their son Moroccan Scott Cannon after the Moroccan-inspired decor of the top tier of Carey's New York City apartment. The so-called Moroccan Room is also where Cannon proposed. They picked the middle name Scott since it's both Cannon's middle name as well as his grandmother's maiden name.

The couple named their daughter Monroe Cannon after Marilyn Monroe, who has inspired Carey. Unlike her brother, Monroe doesn't have a middle name because Carey doesn't have one either.

Carey and Cannon's twins were delivered Saturday in Los Angeles. The pair got married in 2007 after a whirlwind romance.

Moroccan & Monroe: Mariah Carey names her twins (AFP)

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Singer Mariah Carey, who gave birth last week to boy and girl twins, announced on her website Wednesday that she has chosen the names Moroccan and Monroe for the infants.

In a statement, the music star said that she and husband Nick Cannon named their newborn son after the Moroccan Room -- the top floor of the New York apartment where he proposed to her, and which has Moroccan-inspired decor.

Daughter Monroe "was named after Marilyn Monroe, who has been an inspiration to Mariah her whole life," the statement said.

The pop diva has long been fascinated with Monroe: She bought the Hollywood icon's white piano from Christie's auction house, and has written into her will that the piano will one day go to the Smithsonian museum.

Carey announced last October that she was pregnant, ending months of rumors.

She revealed that she had had a miscarriage two years earlier, which explained her reluctance to go public early on in the pregnancy.

"It has been a long, emotional journey for this family, and I couldn't be happier for all of them," said her publicist, Cindi Berger, in the statement.

Carey and Cannon, a rap artist and actor, married in the Bahamas in April 2008. It was the second marriage for Carey, whose five-year union to legendary music producer Tony Mottola ended in divorce in 1998.

The singer, 41, has sold 175 million records since the start of her singing career in 1990. She is the third best-selling female artist of all time, according to the Recording Industry Association of America.

Mariah Carey names new twins Moroccan and Monroe (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Singer Mariah Carey and husband Nick Cannon said on Wednesday they have named their new twin babies Moroccan and Monroe.

The twins -- a boy and a girl -- were born in a Los Angeles hospital on Saturday, on the couple's third wedding anniversary.

An announcement on Carey's official website on Wednesday said that her daughter is named Monroe Cannon -- after Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe.

Carey said the late actress has been a lifelong inspiration, adding that she bought a white piano that once belonged to Monroe at an auction several years ago.

The announcement said her son is named Moroccan Scott Cannon, explaining that Scott is Cannon's middle name, as well as his grandmother's middle name.

The babies are the first for Carey, 41, and comedic actor Cannon, 30, who married in 2008.

Carey, the Grammy award-winning singer of hits like "We Belong Together" suffered a miscarriage shortly after her marriage.

Carey said in a Twitter message on Tuesday that the babies were "doing great and they are the most incredible gifts we could ever have imagined!", and thanked friends and fans around the world for their well wishes.
