Dyan Cannon book recounts life with Cary Grant (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – It was a fairy tale romance that turned in to a stormy marriage, and now Dyan Cannon has chronicled her relationship with Hollywood legend Cary Grant in her new book, "Dear Cary: My Life with Cary Grant."

With an age difference of over 30 years, the duo had a magical courtship in the 1960s that eventually gave way to the dark side of Grant after they were engaged. Following three years of marriage and not long after the birth of their daughter Jennifer, the couple divorced and Cannon suffered a nervous breakdown.

Cannon, now in her early 70s, sat down with Reuters to talk about her former late husband and what she's learned about love over the years.

Q: Why focus the book just on your years with Cary?

A: "I've been offered so much money over the years to write a kiss and tell, which this is not. I wanted this to be a helpful book, an inspirational book. It's really about the little things that happen in our relationships that tear us asunder, so I felt people would benefit from most of this."

Q: Is there an underlying message you wanted to relay?

A: "One of the biggest messages is that it is wonderful to love and to serve and to give. It's wonderful to try and make people happy, but it's impossible to do so."

Q: What was the biggest challenge in writing this book?

A: "I know how people feel about Cary -- they love him. I didn't want people to lose the stars in their eyes about him. I wanted people to love him more at the end of this book than they did before. This book humanizes him. They'll understand what formed him. And I had such compassion for what formed him. But I also suffered a breakdown. So balancing all that was my biggest challenge."

Q: There must have been a lot of stories to sort through.

A: "I didn't know what to put in and what to leave out. The first (draft) was so out of balance. The second time around it started to take shape. The third time I thought, 'Maybe I've got it now.'"

Q: Cary was a big proponent of LSD use and wanted you to do it with him. But for you it was a disastrous experience. Do you think Cary had a drug problem?

A: "Absolutely not. With specificity, no. He thought LSD was his gateway to God, to peace, to that turmoil that wouldn't leave him alone. He thought it helped him, but I don't think it did. If it did, it gave him a peace that enabled him without being tormented 24 hours a day."

Q: Were you able to have a friendship after the divorce?

A: "We were polite."

Q: Was it hard getting your career back on track afterward? Did studio executives have to choose sides?

A: "Maybe some people for a moment. But Mike Frankovich was a good friend of Cary's. He was the head of Columbia Pictures and he chose me for 'Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice' (which earned Cannon an Oscar nomination). So no, not really."

Q: When Cary passed away in 1986 at the age of 82, did that affect you at all?

A: "I was amazed at how I mourned him. I couldn't believe how hammered I was by his death, how deeply I felt his loss. I loved him so dearly, but some of that love had to get pushed down through all the pain."

Q: Was he the greatest love of your life?

A: "I've known a lot of wonderful men. I've known a couple of jerks. And I think the best is yet to come (laughs). I do. Because I understand love now. That's why I can say I'm a whole, satisfied, complete woman. But up to now, I've certainly had no experience with anybody like I had with Cary. I loved him and he loved me. I was the only woman in the world that he trusted enough to have a baby with. That's a big deal to me."

Q: Your daughter, Jennifer, has a three year-old son, Cary Benjamin. Do you see traits of Cary in her or in little Cary?

A: "More with the grandchild. There's traits in Jennifer that remind me of Cary -- wonderful traits. But the little guy, he's something else!."

Q: Will you write another book to encompass all the other aspects of your life?

A: "I'm not sure about writing another book. I've had offers but writing a book is the hardest thing I've ever done. I'd like to write and perform a one-woman show with other people as a part of it. I've talked to a friend of mine, we're contemplating it and I've made a lot of notes. But as far as a second book about my career and things that happened to me? I'm not motivated to do that."

Nick Cannon, Mariah Carey working on new albums (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Billboard) – Nick Cannon is still recovering from the adrenaline rush of welcoming twins with wife Mariah Carey, but the actor/comedian/rapper is staying busy with a new stand-up special and forthcoming musical album, while Carey is working on a new full-length of her own.

"She's planning on having a record out this year," said Cannon of Carey, who gave birth to Moroccan Scott Cannon and Monroe Cannon on April 30.

According to Cannon, Carey completed a good amount of recording a few months ago during her pregnancy. "She's been working away, and we have a studio in the crib, and has totally inspired her on so many different levels. You're definitely gonna see some new phenomenal music from Mariah."

Before that, Cannon's latest comedy special, "Mr. Showbiz," will premiere on U.S. cable network Showtime on May 14, while an accompanying album for the special is set for release two days later.

Cannon said that the stand-up routine makes mention of his rumored feud with Eminem, who took a verbal jab at Carey on his "Relapse" album, but the comedian claimed that it's all in good fun.

"At the end of the day, I don't think anybody was really mad at anybody," he said. "I'm in such a beautiful place in my life that I have no need or reason to be upset or mad at anyone I'm not stirring up the beef. If anything, I'm making fun of the beef."

Cannon plans to follow the stand-up release with "Mr. Showbiz Sings the Hits," an album that blends hip-hop and comedy and showcases a slew of guest stars. "I got a record with Flo Rida, Snoop, Ice Cube, Wyclef, Cee Lo," said Cannon. "We got some hilarious songs. It's kind of bringing the fun back to hip-hop."

Cannon is also finding time to run his NCredible Entertainment management company and assist the career of client Corey Gunz, the New York rapper best known for his appearance on Lil Wayne's single "6 Foot 7 Foot."

Cannon has started putting together "Son of a Gun," a docu-series that follows the rapper's ascent to the hip-hop mainstream and focuses on Gunz's relationship with his father, rapper Peter Gunz.

"I really believe Corey Gunz is a genius, and I wanna see his career thrive, so I just kinda rolled up my sleeves and got involved in a way where I wanna see him win," said Cannon.

Of course, Cannon is taking time to embrace the feeling of becoming a new father at the age of 30, although he's not sure what he'll do on his first Father's Day next month.

"I hadn't really thought about that," he admitted. "I'm used to catering to my father and my grandfather on that day, so to be a father is going to be weird... I'll just sleep, have breakfast in bed or something."

New dad Cannon back at work with comedy special (AP)

NEW YORK – Moroccan and Monroe Cannon better watch out — soon, they're likely to find their way into dad Nick Cannon's standup comedy routine.

Their mother, Mariah Carey, is already the subject of one bit in Cannon's new comedy special, "Mr. Showbiz," which debuts Saturday on Showtime. The 30-year-old entertainer, whose resume includes everything from being a morning talk-show host to chairman of TeenNick, also pokes fun at himself, including all those potshots he gets in the tabloids and on blogs.

"My act is my life," says Cannon, who is also releasing a live album version of "Mr. Showbiz" next week. "It's not going to be funny if it's not talking about the stuff that everybody wants to talk about."

Right now, what people want to talk about are Moroccan and Monroe, who are just two weeks old. Cannon says the babies are beautiful; look like a combination of their mom and dad; and already are showing their personalities.

"Moroccan, I call him Roc, he's more laid-back like me," Cannon says. "But my daughter is definitely a little diva, she's the feisty one out of the bunch."

In an interview Thursday with The Associated Press, Cannon talked about his love for comedy, his supposed beef with Chelsea Handler, and when the public will see photos of the babies.

AP: Was it tough to leave your children this week?

Cannon: Yeah, this is probably one of the most difficult times ever that I've ever had leaving, I guess because it's the first time, and I didn't want to go but I had to go work. I've never been in this situation before. ... I planned this entire day to make sure that I'm home tonight, even though I'm 3,000 miles away.

AP: For people who aren't familiar with your standup, what should they expect?

Cannon: They'll see me for who I really am. This is really an introduction to Nick Cannon. You may have known me for hosting something, may have known me from music, you may have known me from a radio show, you may have seen me in a movie. ... There's a certain public perception out there about me, and even my personal life, but at the core, and in my foundation, I've always been a standup comic, and you'll see that in the special.

AP: What advice has helped you in your career?

Cannon: I remember one night, opening up for Dave Chappelle. ... We were in a rowdy college crowd, and (I) went on before him and tried to alter my act for what I thought that crowd wanted to hear. And they booed me off the stage. This wasn't that long ago: I had done movies, and everything and was pretty successful, and didn't think that could ever happen to me again. ... Sitting backstage talking to Dave about that and (him) just saying, "Never alter your act for the audience, always go out there and be yourself, because even if they boo you on that sense, at least you can say, `At least I was me.'" ... So I took that with me from that day, and knock on wood, I've been rocking stages ever since and being comfortable with who I am, no matter what platform I'm on.

AP: Does your act ever get raunchy?

Cannon: I'm not a raunchy type of guy, but I am a 30-year old man, so I'm talking about things a 30-year-old man is talking about. It's not clean-cut, it's not PG, but it is safe, it is family friendly to a sense. ... I talk about sex, I talk about life, I talk about serious issues, but I do it in a way that you wouldn't mind sitting with your kid and experiencing it, and I think that's one of the things that's appealing about my show, is that it's a little bit in there for everybody.

AP: Has your feud with Chelsea Handler ended?

Cannon: I personally never thought it was a beef. ... She was promoting her comedy show and called into my radio show and for whatever reason, I don't know if her publicist or whoever didn't tell her it was me. ... I was like, "Yo, we still got beef or we can just hug this out?" And she was all thrown off. We kind of talked about it. I thought it was hilarious. I think she got a little too sensitive and took certain things too seriously, but I'm not mad at her. I've got love for her.

AP: Finally, when will we see pictures of the babies?

Cannon: I don't know how I feel showing pictures. Definitely eventually it has to happen, but I'm still pondering on the timing on when to show the world my children, because they didn't ask to be born into this situation, so I want to give them a sense of normalcy for as long as (I) can. I don't want them mad at me 20 years from now, going, "Why was you showing us butt-naked as infants?"

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon reveal baby names (AP)

NEW YORK – Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon have revealed the names they've picked out for their newborn boy and girl: Moroccan and Monroe.

The couple chose to name their son Moroccan Scott Cannon after the Moroccan-inspired decor of the top tier of Carey's New York City apartment. The so-called Moroccan Room is also where Cannon proposed. They picked the middle name Scott since it's both Cannon's middle name as well as his grandmother's maiden name.

The couple named their daughter Monroe Cannon after Marilyn Monroe, who has inspired Carey. Unlike her brother, Monroe doesn't have a middle name because Carey doesn't have one either.

Carey and Cannon's twins were delivered Saturday in Los Angeles. The pair got married in 2007 after a whirlwind romance.
