As a trumpeter, Marsalis has won Grammy awards in both the jazz and classical categories. As a composer, he was the first jazz artist to win the Pulitzer Prize, in 1997 for "Blood on the Fields," which explores the themes of slavery and the creativity of black Americans.

Sibongile Khumalo, one of South Africa's best-loved singers, welcomed him as a "cultural activist" to the Market Theatre. Under white racist rule, multiracial audiences and casts challenged apartheid with original art at the Market.

Aguilera to perform at Jackson tribute concert (AP)

LOS ANGELES – Christina Aguilera is lending her voice to a Michael Jackson tribute concert planned for October in Wales.

Organizers of "Michael Forever — The Tribute Concert" announced Thursday that Aguilera would be joined by members of the Jackson family, Cee Lo Green, Leona Lewis and the band Alien Ant Farm, which is known for its cover of Jackson's song "Smooth Criminal."

The announcement came after more than two weeks of silence about performers for the Oct. 8 show at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.

While the event is endorsed by the singer's mother and some of his siblings, brothers Randy and Jermaine Jackson have protested its timing. The concert is scheduled during the trial of a doctor charged in Jackson's death.

The singer's estate is also not affiliated with the concert.

Cowsills to perform after RI documentary screening (AP)

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – They got their start playing frat parties at Brown University and doing gigs at school dances and church gatherings in Newport. They covered Beatles songs on Bannister's Wharf, which was fitting enough. They hoped to be the next Fab Four: Bill, Bob, Barry and John.

Later, three more family members, including their mother, would round out the fresh-faced clan — The Cowsills — whose harmonies would climb to the top of the pop music charts.

Surviving members of the group that enjoyed a meteoric rise in the 1960s — the Cowsills would serve as the inspiration for the TV show "The Partridge Family" — are scheduled to perform Wednesday evening in Providence. It's a rare on-stage reunion in the state where they saw their beginnings.

The performance will follow the premiere of a new documentary about the band's rise and fall, "Family Band: The Cowsills Story," at the Rhode Island International Film Festival.

Filmmaker Louise Palanker says the 90-minute film is a story of tragedy and triumph — of a family that seemed flawless on the surface but grappled with a physically and emotionally abusive father who was involved in the band's promotion at every turn and a mother who chronically felt she came up short.

"We're all hit with tragedy, and we all have the capacity to triumph — and they have," Palanker said.

Like The Beatles before them, the Cowsills went on the "The Ed Sullivan Show." They did "American Bandstand" and Johnny Carson's "The Tonight Show." With their wholesome faces, they were hired by the American Dairy Association to promote milk in commercials — earning $1 million for 10 spots filmed in Newport. Bob appeared on "The Dating Game" in 1969; he wasn't selected.

Rick Bellaire, founder of the Rhode Island Popular Music Archive, which has compiled a history and discography of the Cowsills, remembers the group playing locally before it went big, including at Crescent Park in East Providence and Rocky Point amusement park in Warwick, which has long since been shuttered.

"A lot of kids in Rhode Island and southern New England were aware of the Cowsills even though they hadn't made it nationally," he said.

"They were extremely popular. They did not at the time get a lot of critical acclaim because they were considered a bubble gum group," he said, ticking off some of the group's hits. Among them were "Rain, The Park and Other Things," which was featured more recently in the Jim Carrey movie "Dumb and Dumber," as well as "Hair," featured in the musical by the same name.

But the band broke up in the early 1970s almost as quickly as it had risen. There had been clashes with father Bud, who managed the band and its finances — badly, by all accounts — and eventually kicked Bill, the lead singer, out on the spot.

"Anyone who said no to Bud had to go," Palanker said.

Richard "Biggy" Korn, a restaurateur in Newport who helped The Cowsills get their start and traveled on the road with them in the early days, called Bud "stifling."

"He entirely took control over them," said Korn, who served as the Cowsills' legal guardian for a time. "The big crime of it was that there was so much talent, and it was never allowed to come out. People would not let them be who they were."

Bud was in charge, and the record label wanted one image and one image alone: that of an all-American, spit-polished band.

Even after earning a fortune — Korn estimates it was anywhere from $10 million to $20 million — the family was left broke in a matter of years, Korn said. The siblings drifted apart, pursuing musical careers of their own. Susan joined a band called the Continental Drifters. Bill was in the Blue Shadows. John became the drummer for the Beach Boys.

The Cowsills' mother, Barbara, died in 1985, Bud in 1992. Barry would later die in Hurricane Katrina in 2006. He was missing for four months before his body was found under a wharf in New Orleans. On the day they were to hold a memorial service for Barry in Newport, family members learned of the death of Bill, who had struggled with heroin addiction and other illnesses and lived in Canada.

While some of the siblings performed together on and off after the band's breakup, Barry's and Bill's deaths served as a catalyst for them to make music once again, according to Palanker.

"They felt like they really needed to be together as often as possible, and that was the best way to do it," she said.

Bob Cowsill, who lives in California and still performs, said his family's story — "intense," as he described it — is one of the last Hollywood stories to be told. And its telling has helped the family process and understand everything it went through, including the fame and the fall from it.

"You have to make the decision: Am I going to let this harass me for the rest of my life?" he said.

"We've gotten to a better comfort level with the openness of this process," he said of the documentary. "It's pretty cool. It's a whole new world, and we love it."

The film is being screened at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence. Bob, Paul and Susan Cowsill will perform and be joined by brother Richard, who was not in the band, for a question-and-answer session.

Singer will.i.am to work with US, perform in China (AFP)

WASHINGTON (AFP) – US singer will.i.am, the frontman of the Black Eyed Peas, will partner with the State Department to promote cultural and educational exchanges with China by directing a concert in Beijing this year.

The Grammy winner met with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Friday to discuss President Barack Obama's "100,000 Strong Initiative," which aims to increase the number of US students in China, the State Department said.

The concert, which will feature performances by will.i.am and other US and Chinese pop stars, will promote and benefit the plan, said the statement, which did not give details about the other participants.

"In order to become responsible global citizens, young people need to experience the world around them," will.i.am said in the statement.

"We must make sure that American students have the cultural awareness and skills necessary to succeed in a global economy."

Adele, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne to perform at VMAs (AP)

NEW YORK – Chris Brown and Lil Wayne are returning to the MTV Video Music Awards stage, while Adele will make her first appearance.

The trio are the first performers announced for the Aug. 28 ceremony in Los Angeles, at the Nokia Theatre. The announcement was made Thursday.

Brown's star, once tarnished because of his attack on Rihanna, is shining bright this year, and MTV has taken note.

"He is having a moment with multiple hits this year, and he always delivers on the VMA stage," said Amy Doyle, executive vice president of music and talent at MTV, on Wednesday.

She called his 2007 performance at the VMAs one of the most memorable: "He will give an energetic, bombastic, jaw-dropping performance."

Adele, who is nominated for seven VMAs, is also scheduled to perform. Only Katy Perry has more VMA nods with nine; Adele is tied with Kanye West with her seven.

Doyle predicted Adele would "bring chills down everybody's spine, if not bring them to tears, too."

Adele has the year's best-selling album with "21," but Doyle notes that her live act hasn't been seen much: Adele was forced to reschedule some concerts earlier this year because of a throat problem.

Lil Wayne's appearance will come a day before the scheduled release of his much-anticipated new album, "Tha Carter IV." Like Brown, he has also performed before on the VMAs.

"Being a nominee and performer on the VMAs once again is an honor because everyone doesn't get that opportunity," he said in statement. "Looking forward to performing on the show, and having `Tha Carter IV' drop the same week!"

Doyle said this year's show has a dynamic set that will "allow for a lot of bells and whistles," and promises that each performance will be unique. So far, no host has been announced for the typically irreverent show.

Doyle said a tribute to Amy Winehouse, who died Saturday, is a possibility.

"We don't know yet, but certainly she is top of mind, in our thoughts and in our hearts," she said.

On next Wednesday's season finale of NBC's hit singing contest, "The Voice," Lambert will perform a duet with the finalist who was on Shelton's team, Dia Frampton.

Lambert, a Grammy winner for her single "The House That Built Me," said she was "thrilled" to be part of "The Voice."

Country superstars Lambert and Shelton were married last month.

"The Voice" also features Christina Aguilera, Maroon 5's Adam Levine and Cee Lo Green as coaches to their own groups of would-be pop stars.

The other finalists competing with Frampton are Javier Colon, Beverly McClellan and Vicci Martinez. The four will perform next Tuesday, with the viewers' choice to be announced on the finale the following night. The winner gets a record contract and a $100,000 prize.

Erykah Badu, Rick Ross perform for Tupac concert (AP)

By JONATHAN LANDRUM Jr., Associated Press Jonathan Landrum Jr., Associated Press – Fri Jun 17, 5:32 am ET

ATLANTA – Even though rapper Rick Ross lacked a father figure growing up, he found guidance through many of Tupac Shakur's songs that taught him how to approach life as a young man.

So when Ross was asked to perform at Shakur's 40th birthday concert celebration Thursday night, he didn't hesitate to take the stage to pay homage to the slain rapper he calls his role model.

"Tupac played father for a lot of dudes like me," Ross told a crowd of about 500 at the Atlanta Symphony Hall after he and Meek Mills performed their single "Tupac Back."

Ross along with singer Erykah Badu, jazz musician Roy Ayers, rapper Bun B, and the rap group 8Ball & MJG joined to raise money for the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation to help students develop their skill in the creative arts.

Comedian Mike Epps hosted the concert and presented a $10,000 check to Shakur's mother, Afeni Shakur, for the foundation. Attendees stood and applauded Epps for the donation.

"We celebrated his life more so his death," said actress Jasmine Guy, a close friend of the rapper who showed a video to honor his life and highlight his music career. "His voice still resonates. It's amazing. That's why is important that we keep the Shakur foundation going."

Badu took the stage to sing several of her songs including "Bag Lady." The Grammy-winning singer also sang "Soldier," which was dedicated to Afeni Shakur, who sat a few rows away with a smile on her face.

"He came at a time when people weren't looking for a savior, they were looking for someone who looked like them," Badu said. "But saviors, sometimes are just doing the work, they are just doing their job."

Shakur was one of rap's best-selling artists, becoming an even bigger star after his release from prison in 1995 with his multi-platinum selling album "All Eyez on Me." He was shot to death while riding in a car in Las Vegas a year later.

The birthday celebration occurred while New York City police are still investigating an online posting from a convicted felon who claims to have shot and robbed Shakur in 1994 — two years before the rapper was slain. According to website AllHipHop.com, Dexter Issac says he was paid $2,500 by James Rosemond to shoot and rob the rapper.

Rosemond's lawyer said his client did not orchestrate a plot to ambush Shakur.

"You have a lot of family, friends and fans that still love for Tupac," rapper Warren G said of Issac's confession. "A lot of people aren't going to let something like this go. For a dude who is just now coming out with this, it's bold."

Lady Gaga to perform on Letterman in album media blitz (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Lady Gaga will perform on "The Late Show with David Letterman" next week on the day her much-awaited new album "Born This Way" is released, broadcaster CBS said on Monday.

The Grammy-winning New York singer and performance artist will also chat with Letterman on May 23, as part of a huge promotional effort behind the new release.

The title track "Born This Way" became the fastest selling single in iTunes history, selling one million copies in five days, when it was released in February.

Gaga, 25, is conducting a media blitz for the new album, her first since "The Fame Monster" in 2009.

"Hair" -- the fourth single from the new album -- is to be released later on Monday, following her other singles "Judas" and "The Edge of Glory" which have already been released.

Gaga performed briefly on the sidelines of the Cannes film festival last week, was the guest editor on Monday of the London-based global free newspaper Metro, and has teamed up with popular online social game Farmville to stream select songs six days ahead of the May 23 public release of "Born This Way."

Duran Duran perform for AIDS awareness in Cannes (AP)

By ALICIA QUARLES, AP Entertainment Writer Alicia Quarles, Ap Entertainment Writer – Sat May 14, 10:38 am ET

CANNES, France – The Cannes Film Festival isn't all about movies.

In the wee hours of Saturday morning, the focus shifted to music as Duran Duran stole the spotlight for a good cause. The band took time out from touring and promoting their latest album, "All You Need is Now," to rock onstage at a party partly sponsored by the (RED) organization to bring awareness to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

"We feel that we help out wherever we can," lead singer Simon LeBon said. "The (RED) organization is a very fine organization indeed. ... It seemed like a good thing for us to do."

The party was held at the exclusive VIP room and was hosted by Belvedere and (RED), which have teamed up and created a special addition bottle aimed at raising money to help fight HIV and AIDS.

Duran Duran has an emotional attachment to Cannes as one of their earlier records was made in the region.

"When we came to record our third album, we rented a big chateau just outside of Cannes in the mountains and spent all of our time writing, recording and coming down here to party in the evening, so great memories, really great memories of this town," said drummer Roger Taylor.

Video: U.S. Marines Perform Britney Spears' 'Hold It Against Me'

A group of U.S. Marines stationed in Afghanistan seem to be Britney Spears fans and a terrific video of them lip-synching to 'Hold It Against Me' has been making the rounds on YouTube.

The members of 266 Rein and HMLA 169, located "somewhere deep in the heart of Afghanistan," put together the clip, complete with some awesome dance moves, choreography and even some special effects. According to the YouTube post, the video took three months to make due to the group's busy schedule.

The Princess of Pop even saw the video and shared it with her fans. "I am in LOVE with this... I always knew our soldiers were fierce! Thanks for everything you guys do," Britney Spears tweeted Thursday with a link.

Beyonce and Jay-Z Invited to Perform at the Royal Reception

It has been reported that Prince William and Kate Middleton have asked Beyonce? and her husband rap legend Jay-Z to perform at their wedding reception.

According to The Daily Star, a source close to the royal couple said, "Both William and Kate are massive fans of Beyonce? and Jay-Z. They really wanted to make their big day even more special and what better way than by getting pop royalty to perform at the party?"

The source continued, "Will and Kate will have an official reception for hundreds of dignitaries before throwing a less formal bash for loved-ones. They both wanted to ditch traditions and make it more personal for them."

The source is sure that it would be "highly likely" that the power couple would accept the invite to perform at the royal reception adding. "After all, who would turn down a once-in-a- lifetime gig like that?" the source said.

The palace has refused to neither confirm nor deny whether Beyonce and Jay-Z have accepted the invitation to perform.

A few days ago, a "selected" list of royals and celebs who are confirmed as wedding guests had been revealed.

Brits David and Victoria Beckham and Sir Elton John were no surprises, but the list also confirmed the attendance of director Guy Ritchie, singer Joss Stone, Olympic swimmer Ian Thorpe and quirky 'Mr. Bean' star Rowan Atkinson.
