Marc Anthony, J. Lo launch fashion lines at Kohl's (AP)

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony may be ending their personal relationship, but their professional one lives on.

Anthony and Lopez launched their fashion lines — the Marc Anthony Collection and the Jennifer Lopez Collection — on Wednesday.

Anthony marked the launch with a ribbon cutting at Kohl's department store in downtown Jersey City, N.J. Lopez did not attend, but Anthony said they collaborated a lot on the work.

"I always had Jennifer as a soundboard and vice versa," he said of his collection. "I'm really happy about her line and I saw all the work that she put into it."

Anthony also said he's "really proud of" Lopez.

The pair, both 42, announced their split in July after seven years of marriage. They have 3-year-old twins named Max and Emme.

In April, Lopez and Anthony announced plans for a TV show together called "Q'Viva! The Chosen," a series searching for talent in Latin America and then bringing them to America. It will be produced by Simon Fuller, the creator of "American Idol," where Lopez works as judge. A representative for Anthony said the show is in its pre-production stage.

RIM near BlackBerry music service launch: sources (Reuters)

NEW YORK/TORONTO (Reuters) – BlackBerry maker Research In Motion is close to rolling out its own music streaming service that will work across its mobile devices, according to four people familiar with the plans.

The new service is likely part of an attempt by RIM to improve its BlackBerry Messenger service as it competes with the mobile media platform strengths of rival Apple Inc and Google Inc's Android.

RIM is in late-stage negotiations with major labels, including Vivendi SA's Universal Music Group, Sony Corp's Sony Music, Warner Music Group and EMI Group. The new service is expected to be announced by Labor Day in the United States, September 5.

RIM has been enhancing its BlackBerry Messenger offering, popularly known as BBM, since announcing its "social platform" at last September's DevCon event where it unveiled the PlayBook tablet computer.

A RIM spokeswoman declined comment on the report but said BBM is one of the largest mobile social networks in the world.

RIM's BlackBerry smartphones have been hit by a sharply declining market share in the United States, even as the company has expanded sales in other parts of the world, partly because of BBM's popularity.

Analyst Matthew Thornton at Avian Securities said he doubted the music service would attract new users but might help the company keep its existing BlackBerry customers interested.

"I just don't think trying to replicate Apple is really going to change their situation near term," he said.

"For RIM it's going to be the new OS 7 product first and foremost ... and then it's about QNX and making that transition."

RIM has just launched an updated operating system on three new touchscreen devices intended to catch up with the technical specifications of Android and other rivals. The company plans to launch the first BlackBerrys using the QNX software, used on its PlayBook tablet, early next year.

The PlayBook comes loaded with the music store of 7digital, half-owned by HMV. 7digital's store includes some 13 million tracks, and purchases made via a PlayBook can be moved to other devices.

BlackBerry smartphones do not offer a RIM-enabled way to buy music, although audio and other files can be loaded onto the devices from a computer.

BlackBerry users can also download music apps from RIM's store, including Slacker, Rhapsody and Pandora.

The Waterloo, Ontario-based company says some 45 million people use BBM, which allows BlackBerry users with data plans to pass text messages, pictures and other files to each other without incurring charges from their network carrier -- 70 percent of them use it daily.

Its latest version allows independent developers to incorporate BBM into their applications, meaning users can stay in a news, sports or games app while sharing it with their BBM contacts.

BBM is touted as a major attraction for younger BlackBerry users and customers in emerging markets because of its lower cost and immediacy. The service runs over RIM's proprietary network and tells a sender when a message has been received at the other end.

RIM's shares closed 3.8 percent lower on Thursday at $25.76 on Nasdaq and down 3 percent at C$25.49 in Toronto. The stock has lost more than half its value since the start of the year.

Spotify says it will launch in US on Thursday (AP)

NEW YORK – Spotify, the Swedish music streaming service that is popular in Europe, is finally launching in the United States.

A news release Wednesday says the service will become available to U.S. users by invitation and subscription on Thursday morning. The company promised more details at 8 a.m. Eastern time.

The service allows users to select specific tracks and albums for playback on computers and mobile devices. Users in Europe are allowed to listen for free for a while before being asked to pay for a subscription.

The service is one of many new ways companies are innovating to deliver music digitally. Recording companies have licensed songs to an array of new businesses to try to reverse a decade-long slide in music sales caused by piracy and falling CD sales.

Spotify to launch in US after long wait (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Spotify, the popular European music service, is set to launch in the United States on Thursday the company said.

The digital music service allows users to stream a limited number hours of their favorite songs for free every month betting that users will eventually sign up to a paid subscription.

Spotify, which has racked up more than 10 million registered users across Europe, has spent more than 18 months negotiating with major music companies to license top artists and songs.

But in the last few months the London-based company, founded by Swedish entrepreneurs, has inked agreements with Sony Corp Music Entertainment, EMI Music, Vivendi SA's Universal Music Group and independent labels through Merlin. It is expected to close a deal with Warner Music Group by launch or soon after according to a source.

U.S. music companies had been concerned that by giving away too much free music Spotify would end up cannibalizing their most important retailer Apple Inc's iTunes Music Store and other subscription services like Rhapsody and MOG. But in April Spotify introduced new limits to the amount of free music it offers.

eMusic aims to launch cloud this year (Reuters)

NASHVILLE (Billboard) – Subscription-based download store eMusic is planning to follow its competitors into the cloud in the second half of the year.

The company is "hoping by Q4 of this year" to launch the cloud-based service, CEO Adam Klein told Billboard.biz. The service will allow its customers to stream the songs they already own to multiple devices, he said.

If that model sounds familiar, it's because eMusic is taking the same approach as Apple, Amazon and Google. In the last three months, all three companies have launched cloud-based services that store users' music files and allow for playback on many Internet-connected devices. It's a model that emphasizes both ownership and access. "We think they're doing exactly the right thing," says Klein.

Another approach is to give consumers access to a large collection of songs. This is the business model of Rhapsody, Radio, MOG, Napster, Spotify and Sony's Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity. And as Billboard.biz has reported, Hewlett-Packard is in negotiations with rights holders to launch this type of access-based service. While most allow consumers to purchase downloads, these are primarily streaming services that emphasize access over ownership.

Both the access and ownership approaches to cloud-based services allow users to stream their music collections from a variety of Internet-connected devices. Amazon's Cloud Drive, for example, can be accessed through either the browser-based Cloud Player or its Amazon MP3 app for Android devices. Google's Music Beta similarly allows users to stream songs from a browser or Android app. Spotify, which has yet to launch in the U.S., has a hybrid model that combines its large catalog of songs with a user's locally stored music.

EMusic's plans to launch a streaming service have been in the news for nearly a year and a half. "We have a bunch of things in store for 2010 that will allow us to grow again and that includes streaming," then-CEO Danny Stein told Reuters in January 2010.

But in terms of subscriber count, eMusic has not grown. The introduction of a cloud service could help the company add to a subscriber count that has stagnated for the last four years (although the company claims to have increased average revenue per user by 22 percent in the last six months). Klein told Billboard.biz the company plans to add subscribers in the second half of the year. It recently spent four months on consumer research and plans to put that knowledge to use in upcoming consumer outreach programs.

Before the move into the cloud, eMusic will add streaming features to its existing store. In late July, eMusic will introduce what CEO Adam Klein called "elements of streaming for the purposes of previewing (songs) in a much more comprehensive way."

Michael Jackson perfume launch causes stink (AFP)

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (AFP) – The botched launch of a perfume in memory of pop icon Michael Jackson caused a stink this week, as his father distanced himself from a Frenchman behind the deal, and a lawsuit disputed their rights.

Joe Jackson signed a contract with French fragrance entrepreneur Franck Rouas earlier this year to launch eau de parfums "Jackson Tribute" for men and "Jackson Legend" for women.

The scents were due to be presented to the world at a press conference Thursday in a nightclub at the Caesars Palace hotel-casino in Las Vegas, with socialite Paris Hilton and various Jackson family members involved.

But the event descended into chaos when Joe Jackson, backed briefly by his daughter LaToya, made it clear he wanted to avoid any physical contact with Rouas, head of the perfume company Julian Rouas Paris.

In addition no release date was announced for the fragrances, presented as inspired by the aromas of plants in the grounds of Neverland, the late pop icon's ranch home before his shock death in June 2009, aged 50.

"I don't like the way he does things. But the initiative to create the scents was mine, and that plan goes ahead," Joe Jackson told AFP, while saying he did not know when the 50 ml bottles would go on sale.

The Jackson patriarch played down the legal problems with using his dead son's name, a money-spinning brand owned officially by an estate from which he was excluded in the King of Pop's will.

"They can say whatever they want .. I am the father, he was my son and I can decide what to do on his behalf and in his honor," said the 82-year-old, clad in a black suit, red necktie, fedora hat and various gold chains.

"There are many interests around the legacy of my son, companies that want everything, but I have a foundation that allows me to launch projects with his name, the name of my son."

The tension between Jackson and Rouas was obvious even before a press conference attended by more unknown models than journalists, and no members of the US media.

But more problematic was a lawsuit filed in a Los Angeles court a day before the botched launch, on behalf of Bravado, the company which holds the commercial rights to sell products under Michael Jackson's name.

The lawsuit said Rouas and Jackson were "unlicensed distributors who have been using the Michael Jackson trademark and/or a mark confusing similar thereto .. in connection with perfume that defendants are attempting to sell."

Bravado seeks a ban on the perfume's sale, as well as 150,000 dollars in damages and 750 dollars for each time Jackson's name is wrongly used on a product.

La Toya Jackson gave her backing, albeit briefly, saying: "My family is delighted with this tribute to my brother from my father, the scents are delicious."

The French perfumer meanwhile said he had known the singer's father since 2009, when Jackson approached his company "because he wanted to make a perfume as a tribute to the memory of Michael Jackson.

"He is a little angry with me now because someone put online, on the Internet, the contract which we made for the perfume, but it wasn't me who did it," he added.

"The perfumes will be on sale in the US very soon, and in September in France," he said, adding that a 50 ml bottle will cost 40 dollars in America and about 40 euros in France."

The investors behind the project are American, and appeared more cautious about the legal challenge.

"The plan is to release the perfume whereever we have the final version," said Zach Cole, one of Rouas's partners. "Obviously we're in a sticking point and we have to be very careful about it," he said.

"There's no deadline yet (for the release of the perfume), but it's coming close," he added.

Live Nation, Guy Oseary launch online photo gallery (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – This week, Untitled Entertainment partner Guy Oseary and Live Nation are going live with a joint web venture RockPaperPhoto.com, an online art gallery selling largely unpublished, hand-signed, limited-edition prints of more than 1,000 singers and acts ranging from B.B. King and James Brown to Green Day and Gwen Stefani.

The site features the work of 70 photographers including such recognized names as Baron Wolman, Ian Dickson, Deborah Feingold and Michael Putland. RockPaperPhoto museum-quality processes include silver gelatin, archival chromogenic, platinum print and archival print, with entry prices at $250 running to a top-tier of $10K.

The website is a bit of a passion project for Oseary, who manages the careers of Madonna and Alex Rodriguez among others and is also the exec producer of "Last Call with Carson Daly." He was the architect of Madonna's landmark 2007 deal with Live Nation.

"I've been collecting photos for a long time, I mean since I started making money. But what you have had to go through to find a good photo is like a needle in the haystack sometimes. You'll drive from one gallery to the next gallery to the next gallery. It's not an easy process. It's a very ancient model that just hasn't caught up with the times," says Oseary. "So I really came up with this idea out of frustration."

Oseary first discussed the concept with Live Nation CEO/president Michael Rapino over dinner a few years ago. "We've been talking about it for a while and we finally said, 'Just go for it.' I really wanted to create a place where you could just sit back and be able to discover great photography instead of specifically going to a gallery to find one," says the manager.

He says his own collection of photos numbers around 200, including a number of shots of The Sex Pistols and John Lennon by Bob Gruen (who is not featured on the site). "Those were the ones that when I made my first dollar I decided to invest in," he says.

Says photographer Tom Murray, whose famous 1968 photos of the Beatles are on the site: "It runs the gamut from Frank Sinatra to Justin Bieber and it suits everyone's pocketbooks. It's all limited editions - they are interested in low numbers and high quality."

Among Murray's photos is his famous, or perhaps infamous, shot of John Lennon playing dead in a park while his three bandmates look on.

"We were taking other pictures and suddenly he dropped to the ground and pretended to be dead. Twelve years later when it actually happened it was very spooky. It's a very controversial picture. Beatles fans either love it or hate it," says Murray.

RockPaperPhoto shares profits 50/50 with artists, a traditional split in the bricks-and-mortar art gallery world.

The site is one of many recent forays into the digital world by Oseary. He was instrumental in developing GrouponLive, a discount-tickets joint venture, announced May 11, between Groupon (for whom he advises) and Live Nation.

Last year, he formed a digital investment partnership with Ashton Kutcher called A-Grade which has helped fund such recent start-ups as video-chat service TinyChat, anonymous-flirting hub LikeALittle and GrubWithUs, a website for finding like-minded people to dine with. "We are making a lot of investments," says Oseary.

Google to launch online music service: report (Reuters)

(Reuters) – Google Inc could launch a new online music service as early as Tuesday, which will be similar to a service recently started by Amazon.com Inc, The Wall Street Journal said, citing people familiar with the matter.

The Journal said Google is likely to announce the service at its annual Google I/O developers conference in San Francisco, adding that the service will operate in a testing mode initially and not be available to the public at large.

In April, Amazon unveiled a service that allows customers to store about 1,000 songs on its web servers for free instead of their own hard drives and play them over an Internet connection directly from web browsers.

Google could not immediately be reached by Reuters for comment.

The Journal said Google has not sought licenses from the four major recorded-music companies and the new feature is likely to include a system that functions much like a remote hard drive.

Users could listen to songs they have uploaded to the service in a "streaming" mode, but will not be able to download the files, the daily reported.

Earlier in the day, Google-owned YouTube said it will add more than 3,000 mainstream movies for users to rent from Monday.
