Analysis: Palin boosts political influence, buffers brand (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Sarah Palin may not be officially seeking the Republican nomination for president, but she is making sure she stays within the party's public eye.

Whether visiting the Iowa State Fair the day before the closely watched Iowa "straw poll" or roaring into Washington at a motorcycle rally to honor veterans, Palin has orchestrated her appearances in the focus of the Republican faithful.

Her political fund-raising has lagged, but polls show the former vice presidential nominee has retained a strong core of support as she flirts with entering the presidential race -- and makes millions from books and television.

"She desperately wants to remain a national figure, who can engage on issues, who can have a real impact," said Republican strategist Matt Mackowiak, adding that Palin sees her role partly as someone who keeps party rivals honest.

Although she has not thrown her hat into the ring, Palin is third in the Republican nomination fight, according to polls compiled by Real Clear Politics, behind front-runner Mitt Romney and Texas Governor Rick Perry, and narrowly ahead of Representative Michele Bachmann.

If she did enter, Palin would be the best-known Republican in the field, and one spared months of intra-party fighting, media scrutiny and expensive campaigning.

"Like every other Republican who potentially will run, she's keeping her name out there, keeping her brand name but generally staying out of the debate, to avoid making any mistakes," said Princeton University professor Julian Zelizer.

"At a minimum, she keeps the Palin brand name going for other reasons," he said.

The former Republican vice presidential nominee made a surprise stop at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines Friday -- scheduled neatly between a debate between declared Republican contenders and Saturday's Ames straw poll, an unofficial test of campaign strength.

"She's still contemplating whether or not she's going to run," said Ford O'Connell, who was an advisor on the McCain-Palin campaign in 2008. "Her appearance in Iowa, which is the center of the political universe, shows that she is politically relevant."

It was Palin's second high-profile trip of the summer to Iowa, which will hold the first contest of the Republican race for the nomination to oppose Democratic President Barack Obama's 2012 re-election bid. She is also due to speak to a Tea Party movement rally in Iowa early next month.

SEPTEMBER DEADLINE?

"I think there is plenty of time to jump in the race," Palin said at the fair Friday. "Watching the whole process over the last year certainly shows me that, yes, there is plenty of room for more people."

September would probably be her decision deadline. "I don't want to be perceived as stringing people along," she said.

Since John McCain made her his surprise vice presidential selection in 2008, Palin has made millions. She has become a contributor on Fox News Channel, written best-selling books and starred in a reality television show.

Palin also enhanced her political influence during the 2010 midterm election season by campaigning for candidates in congressional and state elections backed by the Tea Party grass-roots conservative movement.

Fueling speculation about her plans, the former Alaska governor reportedly bought a house in Arizona where she could base a campaign and has traveled overseas to boost her foreign policy credentials. On Memorial Day, she roared into Washington on a motorcycle and then embarked on her "One Nation" bus tour to historic sites along the East Coast.

However, Palin has slipped in one area essential to any political candidate -- the money race.

Palin's primary fund-raising committee, SarahPAC, raised a paltry $1.6 million in the first half of 2011, far below the amount needed to fund a campaign staff and travel the country.

Romney, the Republican money leader, raised more than $18 million in the second quarter alone.

Palin's appeal has also been usurped by Bachmann, a Tea Party movement leader who appeals to many of the same anti-Washington voters. Perry is also popular with Tea Party movement backers.

Palin's Iowa visit was not the first time this summer that her travels have stolen the limelight from declared Republican candidates. In June, Palin's went to New Hampshire on the day Romney launched his presidential campaign.

And she was in Iowa for the premiere of her documentary "The Undefeated" as Obama visited the state on June 28, the day after Bachmann announced there that she would run.

"She enjoys, in a way, big-timing the announced candidates. She enjoys going into markets where people are doing things and making them see that she's a bigger political figure," Mackowiak said.

Bullseye doesn’t quite hit the mark as a brand new style of app (Appolicious)

APPOLICIOUS ADVISOR RATING:

3 of 5 bars PRICE: $1.99TASTY: Visually interesting app should keep attention spans at least a few times through the song.BUMMER: The interactive portions of this don’t elevate it to anything beyond a musical screensaver.COOL: Two versions of the song to choose from should delight fans of Polyphonic Spree.

Bullseye By Polyphonic Spree bills itself as an “interactive music video,” a statement that conjures a number of different ideas. I was hoping for some sort of game that was timed to end alongside the song. Instead, the interactivity amounts to a lot of window dressing and not much more. But it might still be a step in the right direction.

There isn’t much to the app itself. A small options menu lets you pick which version of the song you want to hear (acoustic or studio), and you’re off and running. The video mirrors the lyrics in the song, so there are some pretty impressive animated visuals of objects splitting apart and coming together, and a big tree with fireworks during the song’s closing moments. But the interactivity leaves a lot to be desired. Tapping certain objects makes them come to life — flowers bloom, plants grow, fireworks explode. But once you’ve seen this once, there isn’t anything to keep you coming back. This isn’t interactivity in the style of a choose-your-own-adventure book. It’s interactivity like rubbing a scratch ’n’ sniff sticker. It just isn’t interesting.

The idea of interactive music videos is a great one that could benefit the music industry tremendously, but this app falls short of that premise. It’s saved a bit, thanks to some unique visuals that feel right at home on the mobile platform. A video like this would look weird on the big screen, but on your iPhone it feels like an extension of a strange app game. That said, only drop the two bucks for Bullseye by Polyphonic Spree if you already love the song, because chances are you won’t be opening it often otherwise.

Claudia Schiffer aims to create lasting fashion brand (Reuters)

PARIS (Reuters) – German supermodel Claudia Schiffer launched her first cashmere collection during Haute Couture fashion week in Paris with the hope of creating a lasting brand that she could pass on to her children.

The 40-year-old former Chanel muse said she has been thinking of getting into fashion design for years and had finally decided to start with the kinds of clothes she wore all the time as a working mom such as cashmere dresses and sweaters.

"I am always very busy, I have a family life... I want to wear the same outfit when I bring my children to school and then go to work with it and in the evening I want to be able to just change accessories," Schiffer told Reuters at the launch of the Claudia Schiffer clothing line in trendy Paris boutique Colette.

"Effortless chic. That is the idea of it," she added.

Schiffer's collection included long tube black and navy blue dresses, grey oversized cardigans and cable-knit sweaters costing from 250 to 500 euros ($360-$725).

Schiffer, who lives in Britain, is married to film producer Matthew Vaughn with whom she has three children.

While creating her brand was a "dream come true," the model acknowledged history was full of celebrities who had gone into fashion. For some, such as former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, the venture has been a success, while others have proved disastrous such as U.S. actress Lindsay Lohan at Emanuel Ungaro.

"I don't want this to be a celebrity line. It is meant to be a lasting business not a quick celebrity licensing line," Schiffer said.

Schiffer said she was on a steep learning curve and admitted she still had much to learn as a designer.

"I want the product to live without my name so that it does not really need me. As a company, I hope it builds up over time so that one day, hopefully, I can hand it over to my children."

The model created a joint-venture with the German maker of luxury cashmere sweaters Iris von Arnim. She invested her personal funds in the company of which she owns half.

Valentin von Arnim, managing director of Iris von Arnim, said the retail strategy of the Claudia Schiffer brand was to sell to retailers in given cities on an exclusivity basis.

For example, Colette in Paris, Harvey Nichols in Britain and Hong Kong, Boutique 1 in Dubai, Beirut, Qatar and Abu Dhabi, The Corner Berlin in Germany.

Arnim said the sweaters had been bought by about 50 stores worldwide and would also be on sale next week at online retailer net-a-porter, now controlled by luxury group Richemont.

Initially spotted for her resemblance to Brigitte Bardot, Claudia Schiffer began her career in the late 1980s and quickly joined the supermodel elite alongside Linda Evangelista, Elle Macpherson, Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell.

Having appeared on the cover of more than 500 magazines, she is one of the world's most successful and most enduring of the supermodels with a fortune estimated at more than $50 million.

Having recently featured in Yves Saint Laurent, Salvatore Ferragamo ads, Schiffer is now in campaigns for L'Oreal make-up and Chanel sunglasses.

She said wished to pursue her modeling career for as long as she could: "I will continue modeling until they don't want me anymore basically because I do love it very much."

Russell Brand, Beyonce invited to be Oscar voters (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Even after struggling to establish himself as a Hollywood leading man, raunchy English comedian Russell Brand has been invited to become an Oscar voter.

He is among 178 actors, filmmakers and other Hollywood notables invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization said on Friday.

Brand was most recently in theaters with a critically mauled remake of "Arthur," which grossed just $33 million at the North American box office. Last year he was seen in "The Tempest" ($280,000) and "Get Him to the Greek" ($61 million).

Also on the list are R&B singer and occasional actress Beyonce Knowles, "Hangover" star Bradley Cooper, the husband-and-wife duo of David Duchovny and Tea Leoni, and a crop of 2011 Oscar nominees including Jesse Eisenberg, Mila Kunis, Jennifer Lawrence and Australian actress Jacki Weaver.

Tom Hooper, who won the best director Oscar this year for "The King's Speech," was among the eight directors invited. Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier whose "In a Better World" won for foreign-language film, also made the cut, as did Aaron Sorkin, the Oscar-winning writer of "The Social Network."

In a symbolic gesture, the list includes "Restrepo" co-director Tim Hetherington, who was recently killed during the Libya uprising.

The academy said its voting membership has held steady at just under 6,000 people since 2003.

Comic Brand deported from Japan, tweets pop star wife (AFP)

TOKYO (AFP) – Comic actor Russell Brand was expelled from Japan on Sunday, his US pop star wife Katy Perry wrote on microblogging site Twitter as she arrived for a series of concerts.

"So... my husband just got deported from Japan," Perry tweeted, saying that the reason for the action "was for priors from over 10 years ago!"

"I brought him all this way to show him my favorite place," she added, without giving further details.

An immigration official in Tokyo declined to confirm her comments.

"We don't make comments on such a matter because of privacy concerns," the official told AFP.

The 35-year-old star of the remake of 1981 comedy "Arthur", who married Perry in October last year, has spoken openly in interviews and stand-up comedy shows about his prior drug use and promiscuity, and has had various run-ins with the law.

He was arrested in September last year after he allegedly attacked a photographer at Los Angeles International Airport.

The actor, who found fame in Britain fronting a reality TV show, got his big break in Hollywood in the film "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" which led to a starring role in 2010's "Get Him to the Greek".

A controversial career spanning presenting, journalism, acting and comedy saw him resign from BBC radio after being suspended for prank telephone calls he made to the actor Andrew Sachs.

Perry is in Japan to play a series of concert dates in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya.

Russell brand wants to be have kids with Katy Perry

Russell Brand’s dead good at sex. At least, he’s always banging on about it, so he must be. Especially now he’s planning to have kids despite the fact he’s hanging out in America and his wife, the lovely Katy Perry, is touring the world singing her not-unpleasant songs.

He can get her knocked up without even being there. He’s going to Skype her pregnant. Actually, that sounds a bit disgusting. Sorry.

Heidi Klum, Miley Cyrus, Russell Brand Get Silly at Kids' Choice Awards

Heidi Klum found herself going green, so to speak, as she took the mic on Saturday wearing Dolce & Gabbana (alongside Nick Cannon). And Jim Carrey, making a surprise appearance, reportedly almost slipped in green goo backstage before even more of it was dumped on his head onstage.

As always, the 2011 Nickelodean's Kids' Choice Awards, a live and very slimy 90-minute ceremony (hosted for the third time by Jack Black), was teeming with stars, including: Steven Tyler, Eddie Murphy, Jane Lynch, Snoop Dogg, Taylor Momsen, Star Jones, Sofia Vergara, Paris Hilton, Miranda Cosgrove, Randy Jackson, Jason Segel, Kim Kardashian, Rosario Dawson and more.

Outrageous 'Arthur' star Russell Brand was targeted by gobs of green slime from kids in the mosh pit, and threw a faux hissy fit (alongside co-presenter Rico Rodriguez of 'Modern Family'), shouting, "I'm never having children!"

Willow Smith was on hand to perform 'Whip My Hair,' while Fergie and the Black Eyed Peas (who were named Favorite Music Group) opened the show. After the jump, check out the highlights.
Fans vote on the winners, and according to MTV.com, big awards this year went to Justin Timberlake (Big Help Award for charitable work), Selena Gomez and Dylan Sprouse (Favorite TV Actress and Actor), Jackie Chan (Favorite Buttkicker) and Josh Duhamel, who wore a Justin Bieber-like purple bow tie for the festivities and claimed victory -- over Kaley Cuoco of 'The Big Bang Theory' and Kevin James -- in the category of Best Armpit Fart.

Miley Cyrus and Johnny Depp picked up awards for Favorite Movie Actress and Actor. Meanwhile, Katy Perry won Favorite Female Singer, but is on the road touring and did not attend the ceremony.
