Janet Jackson says "too difficult" to attend tribute (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Singer Janet Jackson said on Monday she would not attend her brother Michael Jackson's tribute concert because it coincides with the trial of the singer's doctor.

"Because of the trial, the timing of this tribute to our brother would be too difficult for me," Janet Jackson said in a statement.

Jackson's mother Katherine and his sister LaToya have backed plans for the "Michael Forever Tribute" concert in Wales on October8. But the event is opposed by brothers Randy and Jermaine and some fans are unhappy with the organization of the event.

Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and Smokey Robinson are due to headline the concert. Janet Jackson was not scheduled to perform and her representatives said she had issued the statement in response to media queries about her presence.

The concert will take place in the middle of the high-profile trial in Los Angeles of the "Thriller" singer's physician, Dr. Conrad Murray. Murray is accused of giving Jackson a lethal dose of the anesthetic propofol and failing to monitor him properly, leading to his death in June 2009.

Randy and Jermaine Jackson, along with several Michael Jackson fan clubs have also said the timing of the tribute is inappropriate given the trial. Opening statements are expected to begin on September 27 and the trial is likely to last 4-6 weeks.

Conrad Murray has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter and faces a four year prison term if convicted.

10,000 fans attend RI's Newport Folk Festival (AP)

NEWPORT, R.I. – Blue skies and strong ticket sales blessed this year's Newport Folk Festival, two days of veteran acts and up-and-comers from a variety of musical genres.

An estimated 10,000 people attended the long-running festival Sunday at Fort Adams State Park, and they were treated to performances from Emmylou Harris, Elvis Costello, Wanda Jackson and more than a dozen other acts on three stages set around Newport's historic fort.

Hundreds more fans listened from sailboats, kayaks and rafts just offshore.

"We've been trying to get here for 40 years," said Terry Reese, of Fallbrook, Calif., who attended the festival with her husband, Donn, to celebrate their 36th wedding anniversary. "We wanted to hear real music, music that's not canned or packaged."

The festival, first held in 1959 and known as the place where Bob Dylan went electric in 1965, sold out in advance for the first time this year. Festival creator George Wein decided earlier in the year to make the folk festival — and its sister, the Newport Jazz Festival — non-profit in an effort to ensure their long-term survival.

The event's mix of musicians from country, rock, blues and independent genres pleased festival-goer Jason Rosenstein, of Tiverton, R.I. He said that while the festival could rely on only older, established acts, it successfully injects a more youthful spirit by including many younger, up-and-coming bands.

"There's a lot of connecting going on, younger bands, older bands, different genres," he said. "It's a very positive energy."

It was a sentiment echoed by musicians including Taylor Goldsmith, of the band Middle Brother. Goldsmith said the Newport festival is his favorite festival for performing. The waterfront venue, with views of Newport's harbor, is one reason. The crowd and the lineup are others, he said.

"It's less about the festival, less about the acting crazy and more about the music," Goldsmith said.

Harris performed the final set of this year's festival, which began Saturday. Harris said she remembered hearing about the festival when she was a high school student listening to albums by Dylan, who was cheered by fans as an acoustic folk singer at the 1963 and '64 events but was jeered when he performed with an electric guitar in '65.

"I knew there was something going on out here, and there still is," Harris told the audience.

As an encore, folk pioneer Pete Seeger took the stage alongside Harris and several other musicians to lead the audience in singing two classics, "Turn! Turn! Turn!" and "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?"

The Newport Jazz Festival kicks off Friday at the same site.

Suu Kyi 'to attend' Myanmar memorial for hero father (AFP)

YANGON (AFP) – Myanmar has invited democracy campaigner Aung San Suu Kyi to attend a ceremony to honour her father, the country's liberation hero General Aung San, a government official said Sunday.

The 66-year-old is expected to attend the annual Martyrs' Day events on July 19 for the first time in nine years following her release from house arrest soon after November's controversial election.

An invitation was sent to Suu Kyi's Yangon home on Thursday, the official said, adding that the Nobel Peace Prize winner was thought likely to agree to attend the ceremony at the Yangon Martyrs' Mausoleum.

"Government officials, led by the Yangon mayor, will attend the ceremony in the morning," he added.

A friend of Suu Kyi confirmed she had received the invitation and told AFP she was planning to go to the event, which marks the assassination of her father and eight other independence leaders on July 19, 1947.

The official invitation comes in the same month that Suu Kyi tested the boundaries of her freedom with her first trip outside Yangon.

During the four-day excursion to the ancient city of Bagan earlier this month, she refrained from any overtly political activities that might have antagonised the government -- which remains dominated by the army.

Sources from Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) party said she had planned to march to the Martyrs' Day ceremony with up to 500 of her supporters, potentially risking a clash with the authorities.

It was not clear whether Suu Kyi still plans to go ahead with the march now that she has an official invite.

The NLD, which won a landslide election victory two decades ago that was never recognised by the junta, was disbanded by the military rulers last year because it boycotted the recent vote, saying the rules were unfair.

Suu Kyi spent much of the last 20 years as a prisoner in her crumbling lakeside mansion and some observers think the new government would have no qualms about limiting her freedom again if she is perceived as a threat.

Part of the democracy icon's potency as a campaigner for political freedom stems from Myanmar's reverence for her father.

General Aung San is widely loved for winning independence from the British, but he died a year before colonial separation. The country was soon plunged into sporadic civil war and nearly half a century of junta rule from 1962.

Mila Kunis says will attend Marine ball (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap) – Mila Kunis is definitely going to the Marine Corps Ball with Sgt. Scott Moore in November.

Chances are, she won't be setting up any appointments with "Access Hollywood's" Billy Bush anytime soon, though.

The "Friends With Benefits" beauty lashed out at Bush during a stop on the press tour for her new film on Thursday, revealing that Bush had made up reports that she was canceling her date with Moore, who propositioned her on YouTube, due to professional obligations.

"Do not believe what Billy Bush says," Kunis said during a press conference with co-star Justin Timberlake at her side. "Please, I beg of you. Never did I say that I was not going. He made it up and people believed it, unfortunately."

And just to make sure that the air was completely clear on the matter, Kunis stated emphatically, "I am attending ... I accepted an invitation and I'm staying true to my word."

Bush sparked outrage across the Internet earlier this week when he reported that, contrary to Kunis' vow, she wouldn't be able to attend the ball, November 18 in Greenville, North Carolina. According to Bush, Kunis will be filming two movies in November, and thus wouldn't be able to make the date.

But as Kunis told reporters on Thursday, "I got permission to be released from work for the day, so I'm flying in and flying out."

The whole saga began earlier this month, when Timberlake told Kunis of Moore's date request, which the Marine -- who's currently stationed in Afghanistan -- posted on YouTube. At Timberlake's urging, the "Black Swan" star declared that she would accept the date.

Timberlake has also received an invitation to the same ball, from a female Marine stationed in Virginia, but he has yet to respond.

US hiker Sarah Shourd won't attend Iran trial (AFP)

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Sarah Shourd, one of three US hikers arrested by Iran in 2009 on espionage charges, told AFP Wednesday she would not return to Tehran to stand trial next week with her fiance and a friend.

Shourd, who was freed on bail in September after 14 months imprisonment mostly in solitary confinement, said she had been diagnosed with severe depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Returning to Iran could exacerbate her problems, she said.

Shourd had been due to return for the trial set for May 11 with her fiance Shane Bauer and their friend Josh Fattal, both of whom remain imprisoned in the Islamic Republic.

"I can't go back for the trial," she told AFP in an interview in Washington.

"There is a part of me that would like to go back and stand by Shane and Josh at this most difficult time. But really I'm afraid it would be too traumatic for me to go back after what I've been through in Iran."

The three hikers, who have all pleaded not guilty to spying charges, say they innocently strayed into Iran from across the unmarked border with northern Iraq when they were arrested.

Shourd, 32, who was released after months of international pressure led by the United States, said she had sent the Iranian Revolutionary Court a five-page evaluation by clinical forensic psychologist, Barry Rosenfeld.

He concluded she is at high risk of renewed or even worse psychological problems if she returns to Iran to stand trial.

Shourd had developed a major depressive disorder during her incarceration and needs "aggressive mental health treatment," concluded Rosenfeld.

But Shourd voiced concern for the well-being of Bauer -- to whom she became engaged during their incarceration -- and Fattal.

"I was there for 14 months, they've now been there for over 21 months which is far longer and I'm sure that the extreme isolation they're under has taken its toll," she said.

"I worry about their safety, I worry about their mental health. We've had no information from them, no contact, phone call, nothing for over five months... what I've heard is that they now have only 40 minutes out of their cell every day. They don't see any other human beings and they still haven't been allowed a private meeting with their lawyer."

The families of Bauer and Fattal, both 28, said in a statement they fully supported Shourd's decision, but hoped the men would be released soon.

"Our sons are innocent and we're innocent too, but Iran is making all of us pay a terrible price for nothing. We want this over and we want it over now," said Cindy Hickey, Bauer's mother.

Fattal's mother, Laura Fattal, said: "When Sarah left jail, Josh told her they were all one-third free.

"We hoped Iran would show Josh and Shane the same compassion but here we are more than seven months later and the Iranian authorities are still holding our sons. We know from Sarah's experience that they will bear the mental scars of this senseless ordeal for a long time to come."

The families said the first session of their trial was held February 6, when they testified verbally and in writing, with no evidence presented against them.

Shourd maintained the case has been "caught up in this political tug of war between the US and Iran," adding the espionage charges were "baseless."

"I don't think it's possible that Iran actually sees Shane and Josh as a threat," she said.

"When we were picked up by Iranian soldiers while hiking in Iraqi Kurdistan... all we had were cellphones, cameras and a small plastic compass."

The three, all graduates of the University of California at Berkeley, were hiking near a popular tourist resort in Iraqi Kurdistan when they were detained by Iranian border forces on July 31, 2009.

Bauer, a journalist, and Shourd, a teacher-activist, were living in Damascus, Syria at the time and Fattal, an environmentalist, was visiting them.

The case has become an irritant in already tense Tehran-Washington relations over Iran's nuclear drive, a dispute punctuated by UN sanctions and strident remarks from hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The Iranian defense lawyer for the three, Masoud Shafii, has said he would press for their "innocence" and immediate release.

He said illegal entry was punishable by a maximum three-year jail term, which could be commuted to a fine under the Iranian penal code.

Bauer, a fluent Arabic-speaking freelance journalist, met Shourd while helping to organize anti-US demonstrations in the United States aimed at criticizing the war in Iraq. They moved to Damascus together in 2008.

Holly Madison Will Not Attend Hugh Hefner's Wedding

Playboy founder Hugh Hefner is getting ready for his wedding to Crystal Harris in June, but he says there's one lady in his life who won't be attending: Holly Madison.

"I think Holly [Madison] has expressed publicly that it would be a little strange if she was there and I respect that," Hefner told PEOPLE while celebrating his 85th birthday in Las Vegas.

Madison and Hefner were together for over six years and the 'Holly's World' star hoped to one day marry the Playboy mogul. However, the pair has since split and now Hefner is set to walk down the aisle with 24-year-old Harris at a June 18 wedding.

Rumors have been swirling that Harris has insisted against inviting Hefner's ex-girlfriends to the wedding, including Kendra Wilkinson and Bridget Marquardt. Wilkinson has even vented to the press about not receiving an invitation to Hef's big day. However, Hefner says any claim about Wilkinson not being invited is nonsense.

Hefner, who has been married twice before, said he's looking forward to this new chapter of his life with Harris.

"The reality is I can't see myself with anybody else, and I just want to give the relationship that kind of formal statement," he said of the wedding. "I think Crystal deserves it. I love happy endings."

Olivia Palermo and boyfriend attend Couple of the Year awards. Why are we not surprised?

Here is Olivia Palermo making us jealous again. As usual, for multiple reasons. Firstly there is the issue of her entire wardrobe (will she EVER wear something vaguely other than perfect? Maybe she has really manky pyjamas?). Secondly, there is her stupidly gorgeous mug and super shiny barnet. Thirdly, the evidence that all this gorgeousness has come together to bag her totally fit boyfriend, Johannes Huebl. We just hope she marries him and gets a slightly silly surname that we can laugh at while we count her fabulous dresses.

Unsurprisingly, this picture was taken at The Couple of the Year Awards. That is not some crap joke
