Smart casting puts TV Emmy winner in royal role (AP)

BEVERLY HILLS, California – "Designing Women" creator Linda Bloodworth-Thomason once wrote that actress Jean Smart's character on the 1980s sitcom had "legs that stretched out for five or six miles, and one of those laughs that made you feel like riding around in a convertible."

Some 25 years later, Smart's girl-next-door looks, legs and laugh are intact, making her casting of Prince Charles's matronly second wife, Camilla Parker Bowles, all the more surprising, except to Smart herself.

"The thing is, I started out in the theater, so I always did all kinds of parts — all different ages, all kinds of parts," Smart explained recently, while promoting the TV movie "William & Catherine: A Royal Romance," which debuts Saturday night on the Hallmark Channel. "And, actually, Camilla was adorable when they were younger."

Smart said she hopes the movie, which follows William and Catherine from introduction to proposal, sheds a new, positive light on Bowles, "the true love of Charles's life," according to Smart. Bowles was widely maligned by the public and press, especially in the aftermath of Princess Diana's untimely death in 1997.

"Yes, there are a couple of moments where she has a nice, self-deprecating sense of humor about herself and the fact it's taken a gaggle of stylists to kind of put her together and everything, and it's kind of nice," Smart said. "I really liked the way she was portrayed in the script, and a very sympathetic, likable character, and I thought she ... deserved that."

Smart, born in Seattle, Washington, probably always will be best known as Charlene Olivia Frazier Stillfield, the naive but huge-hearted office manager at Atlanta's Sugarbaker design firm, on the first five seasons (1986-91) of the sitcom "Designing Women."

"Oh, yeah, it was a great job," Smart recalled. "And we had a blast. And we're all still friends. And we're devastated by losing Dixie."

Co-star Dixie Carter died in April 2010 after complications from endometrial cancer. She was just 70.

"Oh, she was something else," Smart noted, with a wistful smile. "And we all (the "Designing Women" leads) went to the funeral in Tennessee, her little hometown in Tennessee. Annie (Potts) and I flew down together. We met Delta (Burke)," Smart then pursed her lips and looked away, unable to continue for a few seconds, but then noting that Carter's husband, actor Hal Holbrook, was "doing pretty well, considering they were inseparable."

Since leaving "Designing Women," Smart has enjoyed numerous TV-career highs: two Emmy Awards for guest appearances on "Frasier" (2000, 2001), a major role on the drama "24" in 2006, the year it won the Emmy for drama series, and another of her own Emmys for playing Christina Applegate's self-centered mother in the sitcom "Samantha Who?" (2008).

Smart was killed off in the first-season finale of "Hawaii Five-0" last spring, but admitted flying into Honolulu for her occasional role as Hawaii's governor was no tropical vacation. She said she would arrive, be up at 4 a.m. to work, and hurry to be back on a plane to Los Angeles to be with her recently adopted toddler, Bonnie. (Smart is married to actor Richard Gilliland, and they also have an adult son, Connor.)

That said, she loved the series' hunk factor, supplied by stars Alex O'Loughlin, Scott Caan and Daniel Dae Kim. "All three of them!" she exclaimed. "I mean Daniel, Daniel Dae Kim. I have this friend. She's this darling, very southern, very Christian, married to a cute doctor, but she said (Smart breaks into a Southern accent), `Oh, my God! If I met him, I think I'd just have to lick him. He was wearing those too-tight pants and that bulletproof vest. Oh, my God! You worked with him. I'm going to have to lick you the next time I see you,'" she recounted, laughing.

On the horizon for Smart: possibly another play for the 2001 Tony nominee for the comedy "The Man Who Came to Dinner," and a small role in a Meryl Streep film .

"I never was an ingenue," Smart said. "So thank God. If I was, I mean, I can't imagine how depressing that would be right around now. So, in many ways I do feel as if in the last several years I've sort of been in my prime in terms of work and things.

"So, it's fun," Smart continued. "But I do feel fortunate, because I know there's just not much out there at all for women __ (Smart whispers) __ my age."

Smart turns 60 on Sept. 9.

RI `Survivor' winner won't get free lawyer (AP)

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A Rhode Island judge is refusing to grant free legal counsel to help the winner of the first season of the CBS reality show "Survivor" appeal a nine-month prison sentence.

Judge William Smith on Thursday rejected 50-year-old Richard Hatch's request for a court-appointed attorney to help him fight the sentence handed down in March for violating the terms of his supervised release by failing to settle his tax bill.

Hatch, of Newport, spent more than three years in prison for not paying taxes on his $1 million "Survivor" winnings. He was released in 2009 and ordered to refile his 2000 and 2001 taxes and pay what he owed. Smith ruled he never did and returned him to prison.

Hatch, who claims he is "destitute," is scheduled to be released in December.

'Survivor' winner Hatch says he's destitute (AP)

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Richard Hatch, the winner of the first season of "Survivor," is claiming he's "destitute" as he seeks a court-appointed lawyer to help him appeal a nine-month sentence for failing to settle his tax bill in his tax-evasion case.

Filings in U.S. District Court in Providence made public last week show Richard Hatch believes he should be given free legal representation to fight the prison sentence handed down in March.

Hatch, 50, of Newport, had been returned to prison for violating terms of his release from prison for failing to pay taxes on his $1 million winnings from the CBS reality show.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Lincoln D. Almond is recommending Hatch be denied free legal counsel. He says the appeal is not "taken in good faith."

Hatch is appealing to the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston. The federal court in Rhode Island, however, is expected to rule on whether Hatch is entitled to free legal representation.

In his handwritten court filing, Hatch says he is "financially destitute" and rejects assertions that his appeal is not in good faith and his own issues frivolous.

Hatch also claims the Internal Revenue Service has yet to inform him how much he owes on his winnings from 10 years ago.

He also says he has new evidence indicating the taxes are due to the government of Malaysia, where the first season was filmed, and not to the United States. He says the U.S. Tax Court is reviewing that development.

Hatch spent more than three years in prison for not paying taxes on "Survivor" winnings. He was released in 2009 and ordered to refile his 2000 and 2001 taxes and pay what he owed. Smith ruled he never did and returned him to prison.

Hatch is behind bars at FCI-Morgantown in West Virginia. He is expected to be released in December.

NBC4 big winner in Los Angeles Area Emmys (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap) – The Los Angeles NBC affiliate, NBC4, was the clear champ at Saturday Night's Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards, taking home 13 awards to six for its closest competitor, KTLA5.

The local ABC and CBS affiliates, ABC7 and CBS2, each won four Emmys, while Fox Sports West, KCAL9 and KCET won three each.

Among its wins, NBC4 swept the three newscast categories, winning for Daily Daytime Newscast, Daily Morning Newscast and Daily Evening Newscast.

The Los Angeles Area Governors Award went to Christine Devine for the weekly news segment "Wednesday's Child" on FOX11.

The 63rd annual Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards took place at the Leonard H. Goldenson Theater at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' headquarters in North Hollywood.

Academy defends Winfrey as honorary Oscar winner (AP)

LOS ANGELES – Film academy president Tom Sherak is coming to Oprah Winfrey's defense.

Sherak says Winfrey is "one of the most philanthropic performers in the world" and thus deserving of the academy's Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voted Tuesday to present Winfrey with an Oscar statuette at the annual Governors Awards in November. James Earl Jones and makeup artist Dick Smith will also receive honorary Oscars at the private ceremony.

Blogs have been abuzz with criticism over the academy's selection of Winfrey for the award. One newspaper entertainment critic called it "a boneheaded move."

Sherak said the academy's board of governors "felt very strongly" about honoring Winfrey and are "very happy" about the decision.

Oprah Winfrey, James Earl Jones and makeup artist Dick Smith have been picked to receive honorary Oscars.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences says the three will be honored with Oscar statuettes at the Governors Awards in November. The academy's Board of Governors voted Tuesday to recognize the entertainment industry veterans.

Winfrey will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, which honors philanthropic and humanitarian contributions. The 57-year-old media mogul, who was nominated for a supporting actress Oscar for 1985's "The Color Purple," supports various charitable and educational causes, including her own namesake foundations and Academy for Girls in South Africa.

Jones and Smith will receive honorary Oscars for their outstanding careers.

Jones has appeared in more than 50 films. The 80-year-old actor — voice of Darth Vader — was nominated for an Academy Award in 1971 for "The Great White Hope." His other credits include "Field of Dreams," `'Patriot Games" and "The Hunt for Red October."

Smith was NBC's first makeup man when he started his career in 1945. He won an Oscar in 1984 for his work on "Amadeus" and was nominated again in 1989 for "Dad." Known as the "godfather of makeup," he also worked on "The Godfather," `'The Exorcist" and "Taxi Driver." Smith also helped train many of today's top movie makeup artists.

Smith, Jones and Winfrey will receive their statuettes on Nov. 12 at the 3rd annual Governors Awards dinner at the Grand Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland Center, just above the Kodak Theatre, where the Academy Awards are presented.

Lech Walesa snubs Obama, fellow Nobel winner (AFP)

WARSAW (AFP) – Lech Walesa, Poland's Solidarity-era leader, ex-president and 1983 Nobel Peace Prize winner said Friday he would not accept an invitation to meet fellow Nobel winner US President Barack Obama.

"I expect this meeting would only amount to a photo opportunity," Walesa told AFP.

"I believe one day I will meet with Obama, but not this time," Walesa said, adding he wished the US president "very well, but sometimes things just don't work out."

Obama landed in Poland Friday evening after flying from the G8 summit in France.

Walesa was originally scheduled to meet Obama on Saturday along with other key figures in Poland's post-1989 transition from communism to democracy.

The former Polish president also said that he would be flying to Italy Saturday in line with earlier plans.

According to sources close to Walesa, he was expecting a personal invitation from Obama, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 shortly after taking office.

Senior Obama adviser Ben Rhodes noted that Walesa had been invited by Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski, the US leader's host.

"President Obama would welcome the opportunity to meet with" Walesa, Rhodes told reporters. "It's a scheduling matter that they are looking at."

Walesa said that he welcomed Obama's visit.

"He bears hope for Poland, Europe and the world," he told AFP.

Obama was due Friday to attend a working dinner with more than a dozen presidents of ex-communist states focusing on what lessons their democratic transformation could hold for the Arab Spring.

On Saturday, he is set to hold bilateral talks with Komorowski and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on the last leg of his European tour which has also covered Ireland and Britain.

'Idol' winner could wind up on NC hometown's map (AP)

GARNER, N.C. – Scotty McCreery put the North Carolina town of Garner on the map. Now, the town is thinking of putting the places where the latest "American Idol" went to school, worked and prayed on a map as well.

A Michigan family went out of its way to stop in Garner on the way home from Myrtle Beach, S.C., at the behest of the teenage daughter, town spokesman Rick Mercier said Thursday, one day after McCreery won the Fox television talent search. In addition, town officials are hearing anecdotal stories of people wanting to see Scotty's hangouts for themselves.

"After that, we thought, ummm, maybe we should come up with a little map," Mercier said.

The map would include Garner Magnet High School, where Scotty is still a junior; First Baptist Church, which Scotty and his family attend; Lowe's Food Store, where Scotty worked as a cashier and bagger; the Garner Historic Auditorium, one of the first places Scotty sang in public; and Lake Benson Park, where Scotty performed a couple of weeks ago when "Idol" whittled down the contestants to the final three.

Scotty, 17, defeated 16-year-old Lauren Alaina of Rossville, Ga., another country crooner. It was the first all-country finale in "Idol" history, and the contestants were the youngest ever to compete for the title.

Signs of support remain in Garner, including one at the edge of town closest to downtown Raleigh that reads "This is Scotty Country." But at the Lowe's, where Scotty worked cash register No. 2 during his homecoming visit May 14, manager Terry Mascaro said the store is being "de-Scotterized."

Fans "started coming and grabbing a piece of whatever they could get" Thursday, he said, laughing. The posters are gone, and the Coca-Cola display that spelled out "Vote for Scotty" was being taken down Thursday. But he did put a one-of-a-kind, life-sized cutout of Scotty by the No. 2 cash register.

And other than a possible map, Garner has no immediate plans to capitalize on Scotty's fame until, perhaps, he comes home again. And folks are unsure when that will be because he goes on the "Idol" tour next, including a stop July 27 at the RBC Center in Raleigh, the same place where fans gathered for a watch party Wednesday night to see Scotty win.

"The 14th was our big opportunity to showcase ourselves," Mercier said, referring to Scotty's homecoming visit. "We've been told by other towns with `Idol' finalists that that's your chance to shine."

At Garner High School, reminders of Scotty remain, including small posters on the front doors advertising watch parties. In the chorus room, a framed picture with photos of chorus members from the previous school year still sits on the floor. Scotty is smiling in a photo to the left of his favorite teacher, Meredith Clayton, his bow tie slightly crooked.

As principal Drew Cook walked the hallways of the 2,200-pupil school Thursday, a student stopped him. "Hey, Mr. Cook. I'm going on `Idol' next year," the student said. Cook advised him to start practicing right away.

"That's the cool thing about this," Cook said. "They get to see one of their classmates who had all kinds of hopes and dreams, and his dreams came true right in front of them. They can see that if you work hard, you're talented and you do things the right way, you can be successful."

'American Idol' crowns a winner (AP)

LOS ANGELES – Scotty McCreery won the "American Idol" battle of the fresh-faced country crooners Wednesday, pulling more of a record 122 million-plus viewer votes than competitor Lauren Alaina.

"I never in my wildest dreams," said McCreery, a 17-year-old with a strikingly deep, old-soul voice that contrasts with his youth. "I've got to thank the Lord first ... he got me here."

McCreery of Garner, N.C., and Alaina, 16, of Rossville, Ga., represent the first all-country finale and the youngest duo ever to compete on "Idol," which is in its 10th season.

The exuberant, big-voiced Alaina performed on Tuesday's final sing-off despite a vocal cord injury that needed medical treatment. She received raves from the judges, who said she won the night.

But the consistently popular McCreery, who'd never been at risk of elimination, claimed the title and a record contract.

The teenager seemed overwhelmed as he took the stage for a celebratory version of "I Love You This Big," halting to embrace his parents in the audience, Alaina and others. Then he playfully stuck his tongue out, trying to catch falling confetti.

"It felt like a dream," McCreery said backstage in his dressing room. "It still hasn't sunk in yet, and I don't think it will for a while. I'm on top of the world right now."

He expected the contest would be close after Tuesday.

"Lauren Alaina just went out there and did her thing, especially that last song," McCreery said. "I thought she took it there. It's been a nerve-wracking day, I can tell you that much."

His victory continued a recent pattern: He's the fourth male in a row to win the Fox TV contest, with 2007's Jordin Sparks, 17, the last female "Idol."

Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, two of the four female winners, have proved the winners with the most successful recording careers.

This season's vote total was more than three-quarters-of-a-billion, Seacrest announced Wednesday. For Fox, it's affirmation there's still life in the series that's had a long ratings reign as No. 1 but has steadily dipped in weekly viewership and seen its audience age — something that makes advertisers balk.

Last year's season-ender, which included Simon Cowell's farewell, drew 24 million viewers. Through 2008, the winner's crowning routinely drew more than 30 million viewers.

McCreery commented backstage Tuesday on the loyalty of country fans, and they clearly gave the show a boost. Fox didn't announce the number of votes for the much lower-key contest between winner Lee DeWyze and runner-up Crystal Bowersox in 2010.

In 2009, when winner Kris Allen and Adam Lambert duked it out, more than 100 million votes were cast.

This season, Fox dropped the minimim age for contestants to 15 — Alaina's age when she auditioned last year — which may also have brought fresh viewer interest.

The show remains a hot promotional platform, with Seacrest helping some of the visiting pop stars push either movies (Black's new "Kung Fu Panda 2") or a Las Vegas show (Gladys Knight). Lady Gaga, whose new album "Born this Way" is out this week, was another performer.

The grandest bid for attention came from Broadway's troubled "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark," with composers Bono and The Edge performing with the musical's star, Reeve Carney.

Other high-wattage stars who performed Wednesday at the Nokia Theatre included Beyonce and Tony Bennett.

McCreery and Tim McGraw sang "Live Like You Were Dying," while Underwood returned to "Idol" to pair with Alaina on "Before He Cheats."

Judge Jennifer Lopez — draped in a scanty outfit and shaking her famous booty — took the stage to dance while husband Marc Anthony sang, turning the night into a family affair.

On Tuesday, Alaina's tunes were Underwood's "Flat on the Floor," Pam Tillis' "Maybe It was Memphis" and "Like My Mother Does," an emotional tribute to her mother in the audience.

McCreery sang his future single, "I Love You This Big," along with his version of Montgomery Gentry's "Gone" and George Strait's "Check Yes or No."

"These kids are so young ... I just go, `Wow.' They embody what this whole show is about," judge Randy Jackson said backstage Tuesday.

`American Idol' to crown winner in country contest (AP)

LOS ANGELES – Could the sympathy vote be a factor in the battle of the "American Idol" teenage country crooners?

Lauren Alaina, 16, of Rossville, Ga., required medical treatment for a vocal cord injury suffered during rehearsals for Tuesday's performance show. She soldiered on with three tunes, drawing high praise from the Fox TV show's judges.

"This is a very tight race tonight, but Lauren, with that song, you may have just won," Jennifer Lopez said after Alaina sang an emotional "Like My Mother Does," the last of her trio of tunes.

But it's up to viewers to choose between Alaina and Scotty McCreery, 17, of Garner, N.C., an equally fresh-faced performer but one with a strikingly mature voice.

The results will be announced on Wednesday's finale, airing 8-10:07 p.m. EDT.

Randy Jackson said backstage he thought Alaina's performance, not her vocal problem, would count in the voting.

"I think she sang brilliantly tonight," said Jackson, who thought she outsang McCreery on two songs.

But the judge stopped short of predicting her victory.

"Going into tonight, Scotty definitely had an edge and he may still have a slight edge," Jackson said. But Alaina "was the best tonight."

Both are impressive singers for the show's "first-ever, all-country final," he said. "These kids are so young ... I just go, `Wow.' They embody what this whole show is about."

Alaina's other tunes were Carrie Underwood's "Flat on the Floor" and Pam Tillis' "Maybe It was Memphis," which was selected by former "Idol" winner Underwood.

McCreery sang his own possible future single, "I Love You This Big," Montgomery Gentry's "Gone" and George Strait's "Check Yes or No," Strait's pick for the teenager.

After the show, Alaina gave reporters the silent treatment to protect her voice, with McCreery offering his services as spokesman while she scribbled answers on a memo pad or whispered to him.

When Alaina was asked if her finale performance had been at risk, he replied, "She says, `Yes.'"

Judge Steven Tyler said it's not unusual for steroids to be used for a vocal cord injury.

"You pay for it dearly the next day," he said, adding that Alaina shouldn't be affected because she was on stage briefly Tuesday.

The show started with host Ryan Seacrest bringing Dr. Shawn Nasseri on stage to explain that Alaina blew out one of her vocal cords but had been given "a lot of medicine" to be able to sing during the finale.

'DWTS' Winner Not a Blonde Celebrity; No Surprise (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward and dancing partner Kym Johnson were named the winners of "Dancing with the Stars" Tuesday, reports Reuters. Statistically not a shocker, as the pair danced off against two blonde celebrities in the season finale: actress Kirstie Ally and Disney star Chelsea Kane. In the 12 season history of the popular celebrity dancing show, a fair-haired (at the time) star has only once victoriously claimed the prized Mirror Ball trophy. That honor went to gymnast and Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson in the show's eighth season.

Given his smoothly shaved head, Ward's black hair is only shown in his barely there facial hair -- similar to season three winner Emmitt Smith, only not as abundant. Which also means more bald men have won than blonds.

Non-Blond Celebs Rule 'DWTS'

The overwhelming amount of triumphant dark-haired celebrities to win the ballroom competition is a trend that started in the summer of 2005, when "General Hospital" actress Kelly Monaco became the first "DWTS" winner. A blonde, Stacy Keibler took third place in season two, an occurrence that wouldn't repeat again until after Johnson's win. Season 10 also featured a pale-tressed third place star.

In fact, out of 12 seasons and 36 final three competitors, only six of the celebrities have been blond. These include Alley, Kane, Johnson and Keibler, leaving only Kelly Osbourne and Erin Andrews to finish off the list. Alley won the distinction Tuesday night of becoming the first blond (albeit dyed) to win second place.

Even the 'DWTS' Judges are Brunette

Judges Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli both have brunette locks. What about head judge Len Goodman's silvery white hair? Once upon a time, the dancer enjoyed a full head of dark strands.

Even of the nine guest judges, Osbourne has been the only one to have blonde hair at the time. She appeared on the show in that capacity last season.

Blonds May Have More Fun, but Can They Dance?

Just using "Dancing with the Stars" as an example, you might start to believe that blonds just aren't as good on the dance floor. That, perhaps, the best of sultry gracefulness can only be found in the movements of the brunette or ebony-haired. That is, if you ignore an important aspect of the show: the pro dancers.

Watching the stars bust a move is novel and even sometimes beautiful, but make no mistake, the superior dancing is naturally to be found in the bodies of the professional dancers. On the "DWTS" stage, it is the blond pros who have the majority of Mirror Ball wins.

Keep in mind that out of 12 seasons, only seven dancers have been part of winning pairs. Three have been blond, dancing to victory a combined total of seven times. Tow-headed three-time champ Derek Hough leads the pros in all-time wins. His sister, Julianne Hough, and Kym Johnson, equally fair-haired, have each won twice.

Would Kirstie Alley be celebrating a win right now, instead of Hines Ward, had she only gone back to brunette? Probably not. Hines consistently impressed the judges and had the support of his fans. The "Dancing with the Stars" winner typically being dark-haired is likely coincidence. Besides, that tactic didn't pan out for Audrina Patridge last season.

Former 'Bachelor' Winner Shayne Lamas Is Pregnant

Actress and former 'Bachelor' winner Shayne Lamas is expecting her first child with husband Nik Richie, RadarOnline.com reports.

Lamas, who is the daughter of actor Lorenzo Lamas, is reportedly a few months along and is due on November 11.

"I'm really excited," said Richie, who is founder of the racy website The Dirty. He added that he loves his wife's new figure. "I didn't want it to get out until I was 100 percent ready for it, but at the same time, she looks beautiful and I think she should embrace her body right now."

Lamas, 25, won the season 12 of 'The Bachelor' in 2008, and was briefly engaged to 'Bachelor' Matt Grant before the pair split up a few months later.
The actress met Richie in Las Vegas in April 2010 and the pair married after knowing each other for just seven hours.

Grandfather-to-be Lorenzo Lamas is thrilled about the happy news.
