'Idol' judges back Lauren Alaina to win finale (AP)

LOS ANGELES – If it were up to the judges, Lauren Alaina would be crowned the next "American Idol."

The show's panel backed the chipper, 16-year-old songbird of Rossville, Ga., to win the grand prize after she faced off against Scotty McCreery in three performances on the Fox talent competition's finale Tuesday.

Jennifer Lopez said Alaina's soaring rendition of the ballad, "Like My Mother Does," may have secured her the title.

"This is a very tight race tonight, but Lauren, with that song, you may have just won," said Lopez.

McCreery, the deep-voiced 17-year-old country crooner from Garner, N.C., was also in it to win it on the Nokia Theatre stage with his own possible future single, "I Love You This Big."

Randy Jackson said his range on the ballad was great because he "sung really low and really high." Both tunes were selected by "Idol" mentor Jimmy Iovine.

"If he brings that Scotty cool tonight, there's no reason that confetti doesn't fall on him," said Iovine, the Interscope Records chairman who will sign the winner to his label.

McCreery, who has solidly maintained his old-school country vibe throughout the competition, has never been among the show's low vote-getters and has long been considered to be one of the 10th season's front-runners. Alaina has also consistently delivered smooth performances this season, but she once found herself at the bottom three weeks ago.

Tuesday's finale began dramatically when host Ryan Seacrest announced that Alaina lost her voice during rehearsals. He brought Dr. Shawn Nasseri on stage to explain that Alaina blew out one of her vocal cords but had been given "a lot of medicine" to be able to sing during the finale.

Alaina insisted at the beginning of the show that she would perform.

"I'm here," she said. "I'm ready to sing, and I'm fine. Don't worry about it."

The ailment didn't seem to deter the vocalist during the first two rounds of the finale, when she performed a rollicking rendition of Carrie Underwood's "Flat on the Floor," which she previously took on during the ninth week of the finals. She later belted out Pam Tillis' "Maybe It was Memphis," which was selected by former "Idol" winner Underwood.

McCreery rigorously reprised his version of Montgomery Gentry's "Gone," which he also performed during the finals' ninth week, before breaking out his acoustic guitar for George Strait's "Check Yes or No," which was picked by Strait.

Lopez and Jackson split those rounds between the pair, but Steven Tyler told McCreery that Alaina edged him out because "she's prettier than you are."

Backstage after the finale, Alaina remained silent and scrawled responses to reporters on a notepad with a black marker. ("This is weird!!" read one note.)

When asked if Alaina was concerned when 20-year-old former finalist Haley Reinhart of Wheeling, Ill., was brought in to rehearse in case Alaina couldn't perform, she vehemently responded no.

"Going into tonight, Scotty definitely had an edge, and he may still have a slight edge," Jackson said backstage before noting that Alaina was "the best tonight."

The singer with the most viewer votes will be revealed Wednesday.

Lauren Alaina, Scotty McCreery set for 'Idol' duel (AP)

By DERRIK J. LANG, AP Entertainment Writer Derrik J. Lang, Ap Entertainment Writer – Tue May 24, 10:38 am ET

LOS ANGELES – Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina are each hoping for an "American Idol" homerun.

McCreery, the 17-year-old baseball-playing high school student of Garner, N.C., will face off against Lauren Alaina, the 16-year-old cheerleading high school student of Rossville, Ga., on the Fox talent competition's finale beginning Tuesday evening at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. The teenage matchup marks the youngest in "Idol" history.

Producers lowered the minimum age requirement before the 10th season launched, allowing Alaina and other 15-year-old singers the opportunity to audition for the first time last year. McCreery and Alaina will perform a series of tunes Tuesday, and after viewer votes are counted, one of the young country crooners will be crowned "Idol" on Wednesday.

The pair have both delivered consistently smooth performances since their attention-grabbing auditions when McCreery wowed with his deep register on Josh Turner's "Your Man" and Alaina impressed with her soaring range on Faith Hill's "Like We Never Loved At All." McCreery never appeared as one of the low vote-getters, and Alaina did only once three weeks ago.

The duo have managed to outlast more seasoned and experimental finalists, such as 22-year-old songstress Pia Toscano of Howard Beach, N.Y., 22-year-old rocker James Durbin of Santa Cruz, Calif., and 20-year-old singer Haley Reinhart of Wheeling, Ill. Reinhart, who was eliminated last week, isn't sure whether McCreery or Alaina will win the grand prize.

"It's so close because they're in such a close lane together, as far as country goes," Reinhart said.

Throughout the competition, McCreery has maintained his old-school country style with renditions of such songs as Travis Tritt's "Can I Trust You with My Heart" and Garth Brooks' "The River," while Alaina has presented herself as a potential pop-country princess with performances of Shania Twain's "Any Man of Mine" and Miley Cyrus' "The Climb."

The show's judges — Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler — have equally heaped praise on the upstarts. However, without ever facing elimination this season, McCreery is expected to strike Alaina out after Tuesday's installment with a bigger base of voting fans, joining the likes of past "Idol" winners like David Cook, Kris Allen and Lee DeWyze.

The Only Way is Essex: Lauren speaks out about Mark

She talked to heat about it first last week, but now Lauren Goodger can’t seem to keep her mouth shut when it comes to her fiancĂ© Mark Wright, and she’s been spouting off about him in the papers today.

For those not up to speed, Lauren has just got engaged to Mark who is possibly the vainest man we have ever met. Unfortunately he’s pretty hot, but he knows it too.

He speaks to Lauren like she’s a piece of dirt and has had a string of other women when he and Lauren were on a break. So basically we think she could do better.

But Lauren insists that it’s the real deal and that Mark is anything but a cheater.
