Cattrall, 'Kids Are All Right' win GLAAD awards (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO – Kim Cattrall and "The Kids Are All Right" were among the winners Saturday night at the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation's 22nd annual Media Awards.

The "Sex and the City" star was honored with the Golden Gate Award, which is presented to a media professional who has increased the visibility and understanding of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities.

The Oscar-nominated family drama "The Kids Are All Right," starring Annette Bening and Julianne Moore as lesbian mothers, was awarded the outstanding film trophy at the GLAAD ceremony at the Marriott Marquis in San Francisco.

Other winners included "8: The Mormon Proposition" for documentary, Christian Chavez as Spanish-language music artist, Kara Swisher as local hero and AT&T as corporate leader.

The GLAAD Media Awards honor media for accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities. Other awards were previously presented at ceremonies in New York on March 19 and Los Angeles on April 10. Those winners included Scissor Sisters as music artist, "Project Runway" for reality program, "True Blood" for drama, and "Modern Family" and "Glee" in a tie for comedy series.

"Kids Are All Right," Kim Cattrall, honored by GLAAD (Reuters)

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – The lesbian family drama "The Kids Are All Right," about a couple whose lives are disrupted when their children seek out their sperm donor dad, won GLAAD's outstanding film award on Saturday.

The film, which was nominated for four Oscars earlier this year, starred Annette Bening, Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo. Writer-director Lisa Cholodenko was on hand to accept the award from the U.S. gay campaign group.

"Sex and the City" star Kim Cattrall was honored with GLAAD's Golden Gate Award for increasing the visibility and understanding of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

Other honorees on Saturday included the documentary "8: The Mormon Proposition," Spanish-language music artist Christian Chavez, and former Wall Street Journal columnist and author Kara Swisher. The corporate leader award went to telecoms company AT&T, which has LGBT inclusive policies for its employees.

The awards were presented at a ceremony in San Francisco hosted by "Glee" star Naya Rivera.

"Glee" tied with "Modern Family" for GLAAD's best TV comedy series award, given out ceremony in April in Los Angeles.

Saturday's ceremony wrapped up the 22nd annual media award season by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, which recognizes TV shows, movies, journalists, musicians and bloggers that most fairly portray the LGBT community and the issues that affect them.

Tina Fey Tells GLAAD: I'd Come Out at the Super Bowl

Tina Fey knows how to get a crowd's attention, from her impersonation of Sarah Palin on 'SNL' to her role as romantically challenged Liz Lemon on '30 Rock,' and her speech at Saturday's GLAAD Media Awards was no exception.

The funny lady was honored by GLAAD for her work on the NBC hit, and despite being married to '30 Rock' producer/composer Jeff Richmond, Fey announced to the audience that she had already planned how she would come out if she ever took a liking to ladies.

So how would Fey break the big news?

Fey also told the audience how '30 Rock' was working toward creating an atmosphere of inclusiveness on network TV.

"Liz Lemon's bisexual shoes, Jenna Maroney's heterosexual transvestite boyfriend -- and," in this week's episode, "Jack Donaghy buys a struggling cable network called Twinks!"

Kristin Chenoweth at GLAAD Awards: 'Love Everyone the Same'

A teary-eyed Kristin Chenoweth accepted the Vanguard Award at Sunday's 22nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles for her work to increase the visibility and understanding of the LGBT community in the media. Last year, Chenoweth, a devout Christian, wrote a lengthy response to a Newsweek article that claimed gay male actors couldn't successfully play straight men, instigating a media debacle that led 'Glee' creator Ryan Murphy to call for a boycott of Newsweek and the article's author to briefly resign from the magazine.

Accepting her award, the actress, who is also an Emmy and Tony Award winner, said, "I want to encourage many people of all faiths to come forward and stand with me. Even if you don't believe in Jesus the way I do, he did teach love -- not just tolerance, but acceptance. I'm lucky I had parents who adopted me at birth, conservative Southern Baptists, who said, 'You will love everyone the same.'"

Ricky Martin Among Top Winners at 2011 GLAAD Media Awards

Ricky Martin's interview with Oprah last year -- during which he talked about coming out of the closet to set an example for his twin sons about the importance of telling the truth -- helped earn him two big honors at the 22nd annual GLAAD Media Awards.

The prizes were presented in 25 categories by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation on Saturday, during a ceremony in New York City hosted by Bravo's Andy Cohen.

Martin won the Vito Russo Award, named for the late GLAAD co-founder, and bestowed on high-profile members of the LGBT community for contributions in combating homophobia. The singer, 39, was also cited for Outstanding Talk Show Episode for his appearance on Oprah's daytime series.

"Ricky coming out was a game changer for many gay and transgender Latino children, who for too long, did not have many out gay people to look up to," GLAAD president Jarrett Barrios said.

Russell Simmons won the Excellence in Media Award; among his contributions to LGBT rights, the hip-hop mogul wrote an open letter to the U.S. Senate urging the repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell,' and implored New York's governor to keep supporting marriage equality.
TV shows that won accolades included '30 Rock' (praised for 'Outstanding Episode' in a series without a regular LGBT character), 'True Blood' (named 'Outstanding Drama Series') and 'Anderson Cooper 360' (winner of 'Outstanding TV Journalist-Newsmagazine,' for its series 'Gay Teen Suicides).

There are 32 categories in all, and the remainder of the prizes will be awarded in ceremonies later this spring in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

For her guest role on 'Glee,' and her outspoken support of Sean Hayes (whose ability to succeed in a heterosexual role was doubted by a Newsweek columnist in 2010), Kristin Chenoweth will receive the Vanguard Award in May. The prize is for media stars who demonstrate tolerance and increase understanding of the gay community; past winners include Whoopi Goldberg, Drew Barrymore, Sharon Stone, Charlize Theron, Antonio Banderas, Eric McCormack, Elizabeth Taylor, Liza Minnelli and Kathy Griffin.
