LMFAO's 'Party Rock Anthem' song of 2011 summer (AP)

NEW YORK – If you found yourself dancing to LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem" over the summer you likely weren't alone.

Billboard says the electro-pop-dance track featuring Lauren Bennett and GoonRock topped its "Songs of the Summer" chart. The list ranks the overall performance of hit songs on the Billboard Hot 100 between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Rounding out the top five: "Give Me Everything" by Pitbull at No. 2, Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" at No.3, "Super Bass" by Nicki Minaj, which ranked fourth, and Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" at No. 5.

DJs Redfoo and SkyBlu make up LMFAO.

Lollapalooza closes with muddy, rainy dance party (Reuters)

CHICAGO (Reuters) – Mouse ears in the mud. It seemed a fitting end to the 20th anniversary of Lollapalooza, the three-day music festival that started under warm, sunny skies but ended on Sunday night in a rainy dance party.

The Canadian progressive dance music artist deadmau5 -- pronounced like "dead mouse" -- was one of two headliners, along with the Foo Fighters, to close out of the event.

Tens of thousands of fans grooved in puddles to deadmau5's pulsating rhythms, many of them wearing their signature mouse ears on their heads, a seemingly fitting tribute to this year's festival that was heavy on dance music.

A record 270,000 people were estimated to have attended the sold-out Lollapalooza, founded in 1991 by Perry Farrell, frontman of the alternative rock group Jane's Addiction.

British rockers Coldplay and Muse were featured on the festival's first day on Friday while the second day was marked by U.S. hip-hop acts Eminem and Atmosphere and neo-soul artists Cee Lo Green and Mayer Hawthorne, as well as the Country.

Two bands that rose to stardom in the early 1980s each played rousing sets over the weekend, with new wave group The Cars steely performing hits "Good Times Roll" and "Just What I Needed."

Big Audio Dynamite, led by former Clash singer Mick Jones which reunited earlier this year, delivered their mix of arena rock, funk and world music in what seemed a perfect soundtrack for a summer night in Chicago's Grant Park.

EIGHT STAGES, 140 MUSIC ACTS

Over the three-day festival, revelers took in some 140 different musicians on eight different stages, with the two main sets located on separate ends -- more than a mile apart -- of the sprawling park.

"It was the perfect venue. It's a really cool setup," said A.J. Sunder, who traveled to Chicago from Minnesota with his girlfriend and who, at 20 years-old, was born the same year as the first Lollapalooza.

The dance music tent, Perry's Stage, was one of the more popular destinations and on the first night of the concert. Los Angeles dubstep artist Skillrex inspired such an outpouring of people that the stage had to be temporarily shutdown.

Saturday, part of the tent's paneled roofing was removed to allow for better air flow after it became so hot and humid that some concertgoers struggled to catch their breath.

Torrential rain led to an early end of Sunday's show for some, with the crowd noticeably thinner after the downpour.

Sunder, who sought shelter under a nearby parking garage, said it was worthwhile even with the storm.

"I got my money's worth," he said, adding that his personal favorite performance was by the New York electronic act Ratatat.

Review: Luke Bryan keeps party going on new album (AP)

By MICHAEL McCALL, For The Associated Press Michael Mccall, For The Associated Press – Mon Aug 8, 2:03 pm ET

Luke Bryan, "Tailgates & Tanlines" (Capitol Records Nashville)

Nearly every photo of Luke Bryan shows him flashing a bright smile, and at his best, his music captures the easy-going personality that makes the Georgia native as appealing as the sing-along party songs he favors.

Recently voted top new artist by fans during the Academy of Country Music Awards, Bryan kicked his career in gear over the last year with a couple of back-to-back No. 1 hits. Along the way, he has cultivated a reputation as a good-time guy known for upbeat tunes, even releasing a series of EPs with "spring break" in the titles.

"Tailgates & Tanlines," his third full-length album, builds on his status as country music's "Mr. Fun-in-the-Sun," as indicated by the rocking first single, "Country Girl (Shake It For Me"), a top 10 hit.

As likable as he is, Bryan occasionally tackles songs he can't handle, as in "I Don't Want This Night to End," in which he struggles to keep up with the song's fast-rolling phrasing. He also strains to lend believable weight to a serious song, such as "You Don't Know Jack," about a conversation with a homeless alcoholic.

With "Tailgates & Tanlines," Bryan proves once again he can get a party started. But he still needs to prove he can communicate the nuances of what happens when the party is over.

CHECK OUT THIS TRACK: Bryan can even make a love song sound like a lighthearted celebration, as he does on the mid-tempo "Drunk On You," which features his most engaging vocal work on the album.

Jay-Z, Tom Hanks, Chris Rock party for Obama's 50th (Reuters)

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) – When you are the leader of the free world, you can invite whomever you want to an event and they will show up.

When that event is your 50th birthday, well, that makes you even more popular.

So who did President Barack Obama invite to his 50th birthday bash? Politico provides the answer.

There were, of course, the political types like Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Chair of the Federal Communications Commission Julius Genachowski and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

But then there were the celebs -- a mixture of musicians, comedians, athletes and actors.

Jay-Z came, as did Chris Rock, Tom Hanks, Charles Barkley and basketball player Grant Hill.

And what party would be complete without live music?

R&B songstress Ledisi performed in the East Room -- as did legendary pianist Herbie Hancock -- while Stevie Wonder sang a melody .

That leaves just one question -- why didn't Jay-Z and Kanye West, a native of Obama's own Chicago, perform something from their new album?

Jon Stewart blasts Obama, Tea Party over debt deal (Reuters)

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) – As the Democrats cave and the Tea Party rages on, neither side is happy with the budget deal -- a deal that rendered Jon Stewart incredulous.

Stewart thought he remembered that President Barack Obama assured everyone no budget would pass without revenue increases -- meaning tax cuts.

"That's ... eh ... they must have forgotten to add 'and with the new balanced approach to deficit reduction forged by rational adults there're some revenue increases whilst preserving some vital government functions.'"

Nope. After a video of a skunk with its head in a jar of peanut butter and Barack Obama thanking the American people for pushing a deal forward, Stewart dubbed the compromise a "turd."

He then assumed the Republicans were happy because the Democrats got "hosed."

Nope. "What the fee-fi-fo-f**k!" Stewart screamed.

That seems to be the prevailing sentiment. You can see the video here: http://www.thewrap.com/media/column-post/jon-stewart-blasts-barack-obama-tea-party-over-turd-debt-deal-29668

Yacht party on eve of Britain's second royal wedding (AFP)

EDINBURGH (AFP) – Queen Elizabeth II's eldest granddaughter Zara Phillips and her fiance Mike Tindall threw a party on a yacht Friday on the eve of their wedding, with Prince William and wife Catherine among the guests.

Phillips and England rugby star Tindall hosted drinks on the Royal Yacht Britannia after a wedding rehearsal for Saturday's service in Edinburgh, which they ended with a brief kiss outside the church to the delight of well-wishers.

Among guests arriving at the party was Catherine, wearing a mid-length green dress, who headed up the red-carpeted steps followed by husband William, second in line to the throne, wearing a blue suit and red tie.

They are attending the wedding just three months after their own marriage on April 29, which drew worldwide attention.

Prince Harry, William's younger brother, was last to arrive at the yacht, bouncing up the steps two at a time and entering the party to a huge cheer.

Phillips, wearing a white one-shoulder dress with a blue print design, and Tindall mingled with guests on the outside decking area of the ship during the two-hour party, as a live band played and waiters served champagne and canapes.

The older generation of Britain's royal family was absent, with no sign of the queen, her husband Prince Philip or William's father Prince Charles and his wife Camilla.

The yacht, permanently moored in Edinburgh's port of Leith, served the royal family for 44 years, carrying them on 968 official voyages all around the world before it was decommissioned in 1997.

Phillips' parents, Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips, honeymooned on the ship, cruising the Caribbean in 1973.

The queen adored the yacht and wept in public for the first time when it was retired.

Before the party, former eventing world champion Phillips and rugby World Cup winner Tindall arrived at Edinburgh's 17th century Canongate Kirk in a chauffeur-driven Jaguar for one last run-through of the service.

The couple, both dressed in jeans, spent about 50 minutes inside, along with the Reverend Neil Gardner, who will conduct the ceremony, and Tindall's best man Iain Balshaw, his former Bath and England colleague.

At William and Catherine's wedding, more than a million people lined the streets of London and an estimated two billion more watched on television.

Phillips' wedding, a much more intimate affair, is not being televised but filming equipment was seen being moved into the church.

Canongate Kirk holds up to 400 people and is about 400 metres away from the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the monarch's official residence in Scotland, where the reception will be held.

The last royal wedding in Scotland was that of Anne and her second husband Timothy Laurence.

They married in 1992 at Crathie Kirk near Balmoral, the queen's private estate in Scotland.

Monaco royal newlyweds throw lavish S.Africa party (AFP)

UMHLANGA, South Africa (AFP) – Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene of Monaco threw a swank party Thursday for members of the International Olympic Committee and assorted glitterati at a five-star hotel in South Africa.

The newlyweds, who are in Charlene's home country for a meeting of the IOC, held a dinner reception for nearly 500 guests at the Oyster Box, a seaside luxury hotel in the Indian Ocean resort town of Umhlanga.

The couple made a brief appearance on the red carpet in front of the hotel, obliging the crowd of photographers, journalists and several dozen royal-watchers with a quick kiss on the lips.

They spent about a minute posing for the cameras -- Albert dressed in a black suit and red tie, Charlene in a black sleeveless gown with a diamond-shaped pattern that appeared inspired by African design -- then headed back inside to the invitation-only event.

"We're just so thrilled," said Joanne Hayes, public relations chief for the hotel.

The Oyster Box has spent weeks preparing for the event, which follows on the couple's wedding at the weekend in Albert's tiny Mediterranean principality.

Guests arrived to drumming and dancing by a group of young Zulu men dressed in traditional animal-skin garb, and were also serenaded by a local choir.

Dressed mostly in evening gowns and suits, they queued on the red carpet to pass through a security checkpoint at the entrance to the hotel, which was decked out in the red and white of the Monaco flag.

Hayes said the menu would include a dish created in Charlene's honour.

"We've created a special dish called Oysters Charlene. It's created by our executive chef, Kevin Joseph," she told AFP.

"Basically it's oysters baked with creamed spinach, curried lentils and asparagus."

The guest list, which ran to nearly 500 people, included IOC President Jacques Rogge, South African Sport Minister Fikile Mbalula, former Miss South Africa Jo-Ann Strauss and an assortment of business magnates, local notables and heavy hitters in the sporting world.

South African President Jacob Zuma, who had lunch with the couple Wednesday, had planned to attend but was detained on other business in the northern province of Limpopo, his office said.

Two of Zuma's four wives did however show up for the party, which began at 7:00 pm (1700 GMT).

The newlyweds' South African tour has been part honeymoon and part business trip.

Albert, a member of the IOC, took part in Wednesday's election of the 2018 Winter Olympics host city, which saw Pyeongchang, South Korea beat out Munich, Germany and Annecy, France.

On Friday, Charlene will be welcomed by South African anti-apartheid icon Archbishop Desmond Tutu at his HIV foundation in Cape Town.

She will be a co-patron of a collective of 10 charities known as The Giving Organisation Trust, carrying out her first duties as patron with visits to two charities that focus on children and HIV-AIDS and a project working to preserve the region's unique fynbos vegetation in the winelands.

The focus of the trust's charities range from children to health and animal protection.

Monaco royal wedding party begins despite rumours (AFP)

MONACO (AFP) – The Mediterranean principality of Monaco on Thursday began three days of royal wedding festivities marked by glamour and romance but also, thanks to last minute rumours, suspense and intrigue.

Californian rockers The Eagles were tuning up to mark the start of the party with a late night concert on the eve of Prince Albert II's Friday civil wedding to statuesque South African swimming champ Charlene Wittstock.

After a 40 minute ceremony, Charlene will become Princess of Monaco at the moment Philippe Narmino, Monaco's senior legal official and president of the state council, pronounces the couple man and wife.

On Saturday, the royal union will be solemnised by a very public Catholic religious ceremony, which the palace hopes will put paid once and for all to rumours that the bride has cold feet.

Star guests at the religious ceremony will include France's President Nicolas Sarkozy, several European, Middle Eastern and African kings and princes, and several leading sportsmen and women.

From the world of fashion Karl Lagerfeld, Giorgio Armani and Naomi Campbell will rub stylishly attired shoulders with former James Bond actor Roger Moore.

It will be the biggest day in Monaco since Albert's father Rainier III married Hollywood actress Grace Kelly in 1956, but preparations have been clouded by claims that Charlene attempted to call it off.

Press reports suggested she had learned of some secret from Albert's private life and decided to head home to South Africa, only to be intercepted by royal aides as she approached Nice airport and persuaded to stay.

The royal house and family friends dismissed the claim.

"These rumours have no other goal than to severely damage the reputation of the monarch and thereby that of Miss Wittstock and severely undermine this happy event," said the palace, which is banking on a wedding tourist boom.

Wittstock's father Mike also weighed in, insisting his daughter had been heading to Paris to do some pre-wedding shopping, and not fleeing home.

Albert, 53, has children with two other women but has yet to produce an heir, a matter of some concern to Monaco constitutionalists, who fear instability should the throne revert to his sister Caroline.

For nine centuries Monaco has been run by the Grimaldi family, the crown passing through the male line. In 2002, fearing Albert would die without an heir, Monaco changed its constitution to allow a princess to inherit.

In the absence of any heir, Monaco would become a French protectorate.

Until Tuesday, all appeared to be going to plan. Charlene's blonde locks, high cheekbones and impressively broad shoulders have graced the covers of magazines and celebrity guests are converging on the Mediterranean enclave.

The wedding was never going to compete for column inches with Britain's marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton, but the Monaco brand was looking forward to receiving a rejuvenating shot in the arm.

Palace advisor and television royal wedding commentator Stephane Bern also tried to dismiss the rumours, but not without adding to the speculation by citing rumours of another love child.

"A woman could easily pretend that she's pregnant by a prince," he told Le Parisien. "You can't do a DNA test to check three days before a wedding!"

The Monaco royal clan has an unlucky matrimonial history.

Albert's mother, US film star Grace Kelly -- turned Princess Grace on her marriage to Rainier III -- died in a car crash in 1982. Her daughter Caroline lost her second husband Stephano Casiraghi in a 1990 motorboat accident.

The other royal sister, Princess Stephanie, has also been unlucky in love, in the words of Wednesday's edition of Le Parisien "marrying almost as often as she falls in love" and finding herself betrayed by her bodyguard lover.

Rocker Jack White and wife throw a divorce party (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – For rocker Jack White and his model wife Karen Elson, parting is such a sweet party!

The couple said they plan a celebration on Friday night in Nashville, Tennessee, in honor of their pending divorce, which they also announced on Friday.

An invitation posted online said the get-together will mark White and Elson's "6th anniversary and their upcoming divorce with a positive swing bang hum dinger."

"The party will include dancing, photos, memories and drinks with alcohol in them. This is only for close personal friends and family so please no plus ones or dead beats," the invitation said.

White and Elson, who were married in June 2005, have two children together, Scarlett and Henry Lee.

"We feel so fortunate for the time we have shared and the time we will continue to spend both separately and together watching our children grow," the couple said in a statement.

They did not say whey they were splitting up.

A photo accompanying the invitation shows White in a Western-style hat and a jacket with skeletal images of bones on it, and Elson hugging him from behind.

White, who is known for singing in a plaintive voice that straddles the line between punk rock and the blues, first gained fame with drummer Meg White in Grammy-Awards winning rock duo The White Stripes.

The White Stripes broke up earlier this year, but Jack White continues to play in the band The Raconteurs.

The British-born Elson is a model-turned singer who last year released her debut album "The Ghost Who Walks."

Willie Nelson clan hosts Country 'Throwdown' party (AP)

By CHRIS TALBOTT, AP Entertainment Writer Chris Talbott, Ap Entertainment Writer – Tue May 24, 7:57 am ET

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lukas Nelson clearly remembers the conversation that launched him on the path to playing guitar for a living.

Nelson was 10 or 11 and his father, Willie, was showing him a few things on the guitar. The son asked his father what he'd like for his upcoming birthday and the answer changed Lukas Nelson's life.

"He said, `I want you to learn how to really play guitar,'" Lukas Nelson remembered. "I said, `OK,' and I did. I fell in love with it. "

Lukas Nelson threw himself into learning the guitar and his progress will be on display this summer when he joins his famous father and a host of rising country music stars on the "Country Throwdown Tour". Willie Nelson headlines the traveling festival that kicks off Friday in Philadelphia.

Jamey Johnson, Randy Houser, Lee Brice and Brantley Gilbert among others will join the Nelsons on the 25-city tour. And while the iconic Country Music Hall of Famer is looking forward to seeing those guys, he's really excited to spend the summer touring with his son. No offense.

"Oh, I can't wait," Willie Nelson said. "I'm looking really forward to it. We have a lot of fun together and I'm so proud of him that he's doing so good. Whenever we're on shows together I want him to come back and play, him and his whole band, and we just set up and jam for a couple of hours."

Lukas Nelson released his first self-titled album with his band, Promise of the Real, last year and expects to play 250 or more shows in 2011. There are times when he looks, sounds and plays like his dad, but the 22-year-old guitarist is clearly attempting to cut his own path.

The album is filled with rock `n' roll, from flaming electric Texas blues rock to spacey and spiritual psychedelia. He covers deep influences Neil Young and Jimi Hendrix on the album and at times sounds more like the offspring of Stevie Ray Vaughn than the heir of the Nelson clan.

That Lukas Nelson picked up the guitar and hit the road shouldn't come as a surprise. It's the way he was raised. Lukas and his six siblings were regulars on their father's tour bus, thanks to homeschooling, and some played and sang on stage with Nelson's band as they grew up.

"We can really have more family time out here than we can on a day off somewhere at home because it really gets so hectic," Willie Nelson said. "Really we're able to connect better out here going up and down the highway. We are traveling musicians. I guess we like it. It's kind of like a gypsy."

It was an idyllic upbringing for a young musician and Lukas and his brother Micah dove into the life. Lukas played the guitar 10 hours a day and entered the family business of songwriting. He remembers his father being a handy resource, but one who kept it positive. If Nelson liked one of his Lukas' songs, he might record it, as he did with "You Were It" on 2004's "It Always Will Be." And if he didn't like a song, he kept it to himself.

Locked away in his bedroom, Lukas chased the sounds made by iconic figures in rock `n' roll who were personal friends — Young, Bob Dylan, John Mellencamp among them.

Eventually, though, he felt the pull to step out on his own. In his late teens, he decided to quit school and moved to Southern California, starting his own band there.

"I just knew I wanted to play, that I loved to play and that's what I wanted to do with my life, whether I was going to make money at it or not," Lukas Nelson said. "By my own decision I dropped out of school and lived in my car for a year and busked on the street. I toured in a van when we first started. I didn't ask my parents for any money financially. I tried to do it on my own and I'm proud I did it on my own."

While Lukas' father is the obvious main draw on the "Country Throwdown Tour," promoter Kevin Lyman thinks acts like the younger Nelson will be the focus of ticket-buyers. Lyman's original concept was to pair Willie Nelson with a young act like a Dierks Bentley who could serve as a bridge between generations, and he's mostly succeeded with that premise in the festival's second year.

Lyman believes the Throwdown has the same kind of potential as his "Warped Tour," which has been on the road for 17 years. There's a definite outlaw flavor to the lineup and Lyman believes the unique grouping could help secure the future of the event.

One thing's for sure: With the Nelson family along it's going to be one heck of a party.

"I'm looking forward to hanging out with them," Lyman said. "Everyone's asking me what's the difference between the `Warped Tour' and the `Throwdown' and the only thing I could figure out was brown liquor. And that's not a good thing sometimes."

No charges for rocker Doherty over party death (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters Life!) – British musician Pete Doherty, best known as a member of Babyshambles and The Libertines, will not face charges over the death of an actor at a party in 2006, prosecutors said Thursday.

Mark Blanco, 30, died after plunging from a balcony at a flat in Whitechapel in east London.

After examining the case in detail, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said there was insufficient evidence to charge any individual with either murder or manslaughter.

Blanco was involved in a confrontation with Doherty, his minder Johnny Jeannevol and a friend Paul Roundhill at the party shortly before his death, investigations have shown.

All three have denied any wrongdoing and an inquest and police reports have failed to establish the circumstances which led to the death.

Jeremy Hopkins, head of the CPS London Complex Casework Unit, said none of the evidence available was capable of establishing that Blanco was thrown or pushed from the balcony or that any other individual was present when he fell.

"If any further evidence does come to light, we will, of course, review our decision in accordance with our normal practices," he added in a statement.

Blanco's family has been waging a long campaign for an inquiry and has already vowed to issue private proceedings against Doherty.

Film party: Everybody comes to Cannes, or wants to (AP)

CANNES, France – The Cannes Film Festival is like Rick's Cafe Americain, Humphrey Bogart's nightclub in "Casablanca" about which one character proclaims, "Everybody comes to Rick's."

For film professionals, entertainment journalists and even fans worldwide, Cannes is the place where everybody comes — or wishes they could — for 12 days each May.

The 64th edition of Cannes, which starts Wednesday, is one of the world's prime celebrity-watching zones and a launching place for big and small films, among them Woody Allen's opening-night premiere "Midnight in Paris," featuring Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Adrien Brody, Marion Cotillard and France's first lady, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.

Other highlights include a Saturday night special as Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz turn out for a Cannes screening of "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" over the festival's first weekend, followed by Monday's premiere of Terrence Malick's "The Tree of Life," starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn.

Cannes gives all three films a last-second publicity blast as they head into commercial theaters during the festival or immediately after.

"With the star power of Johnny and Penelope, it's just great to have them walk down that red carpet there," said "Pirates" producer Jerry Bruckheimer. "You have the world media there. That's the biggest boost for us, because if you open a picture in May and you want to go to London and all these other places to promote it, there's nobody there. They're all in Cannes. So that's where you have to be."

The notoriously press-shy Malick — who has made only a handful of films in a nearly 40-year career, among them "Days of Heaven," which earned him the Cannes directing prize in 1979 — is expected to skip most or all of the public appearances filmmakers usually make at the festival.

"He chooses to live his life in a private way and just focus on the art," said "Tree of Life" producer Dede Gardner. "One of the very great differences working with him above all else is his honesty. He endeavors to achieve that in everything he does. Every moment he creates between the actors, there's a spontaneity that he insists upon, which is mesmerizing to watch."

Cannes organizers caught criticism last year for a lackluster lineup, but they have made up for it this time with a promising schedule of 20 films competing for the top prize, the Palme d'Or. Past winners include Federico Fellini's "La Dolce Vita," Martin Scorsese's "Taxi Driver," Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now," Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction" and Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11."

"Pirates" and "Midnight in Paris" screen out of competition, while "Tree of Life" is up for prizes against a field that features films from three past Palme d'Or winners.

Belgian brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, two-time winners for 1999's "Rosetta" and 2005's "The Child," return with their drama "The Kid with a Bike," starring Cecile de France. Danish director Lars von Trier, the festival's 2000 winner for "Dancer in the Dark," is back with "Melancholia," a drama with end-of-the-world overtones starring Kirsten Dunst, Kiefer Sutherland and Charlotte Gainsbourg, who won the best-actress award at Cannes two years ago for von Trier's "Antichrist." Italian actor-director Nanni Moretti, the 2001 winner for "The Son's Room," comes to Cannes again with the papal saga "We Have a Pope," in which he co-stars with Michel Piccoli.

Spain's Pedro Almodovar, an Academy Award winner and frequent Cannes entrant who has won the festival's directing and screenplay prizes but never the Palme d'Or, is in the running again for the genre-bending tale "The Skin I Live In," starring Antonio Banderas, who rose to stardom in Almodovar films in the 1980s.

"It's a movie that's very difficult to describe in words," said Michael Barker, co-president of Sony Pictures Classics, the U.S. distributor of Almodovar's films. "It's got a little horror in it, a little science fiction in it. There's drama in it. It has some comic elements, but I wouldn't call it a comedy. It's a very rich film."

A key Cannes player both in premiering films and snapping up titles for sale in the festival and the huge Cannes market that runs alongside, Sony Pictures Classics also is releasing "Midnight in Paris" and past Palme d'Or winner Gus Van Sant's drama "Restless" with Mia Wasikowska, Thursday's opening film for a secondary competition called Un Certain Regard.

Penn has a second film in the main competition, Italian director Paolo Sorrentino's "This Must Be the Place."

The main competition also features Tilda Swinton and John C. Reilly in Scottish filmmaker Lynne Ramsay's "We Need to Talk About Kevin"; Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan in Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn's "Drive"; John Goodman in Frenchmen Michel Hazanavicius' "The Artist"; and Emily Browning in Australian director Julia Leigh's "Sleeping Beauty."

Cruz — a frequent festival-goer in Almodovar films, Allen's "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" and other Cannes entries — is jetting in with the "Pirates" cast for a quick stopover before continuing on a global tour to promote the movie. She's sorry she'll miss Allen and Almodovar's current Cannes films and will be there just long enough for a taste the festival's carnival atmosphere.

"I love the festival," Cruz said. "To go around the streets there, it feels a little bit like being inside a Fellini movie. I always say that, but it really feels like that. But it's a beautiful celebration of cinema and embracing of film."

'Lavish' SA party to follow Monaco royal wedding (AFP)

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) – Prince Albert II of Monaco and his swimming champ fiancee, Charlene Wittstock, will host a "lavish" party in her home country South Africa after their wedding in July, a newspaper said Sunday.

The couple will host 200 guests, including international royalty, at a seaside luxury hotel in the eastern city of Durban on July 7, five days after their wedding in Monaco, the Sunday Times reported.

"We're keeping everything under wraps, but I can say it will be a luxurious affair," Wayne Coetser, general manager of the five-star Oyster Box Hotel, told the newspaper.

"It's a lavish affair, with a menu that will feature some South African delicacies" and the "best champagne", he added.

Albert and Wittstock had already announced they would travel to South Africa after the wedding to attend a July 5-9 meeting of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Durban, when the host of the 2018 Winter Olympics will be decided.

The two former Olympians -- he was a bobsleigh racer, she a backstroke swimmer -- in August moved their wedding up by six days to be able to attend the meeting.

Albert, the 53-year-old son of late Hollywood star Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III, has been a member of the IOC since 1985.

The playboy prince announced his engagement to Zimbabwe-born Wittstock, 33, last June.

Get to Know Pippa Middleton, Kate's Party Planning Maid of Honor

One member of the Middleton family who seems to be relishing her moment in the spotlight is Pippa, Kate's younger sister.

The 27-year-old, who will serve as the chief maid of honor at her sister's wedding on Friday, had paparazzi clamoring for her snap at the engagement party of Richard Branson's daughter Holly last week in London -- and she happily obliged. She already looks like a seasoned pro preening in front of the cameras.

Pippa, which is short for Philippa, works as a party planner three days a week at a company called Table Talk and two days a week editing an online magazine called The Party Time, which is an off-shoot of her parents' successful party supply company, Party Pieces.

She has taken the last two weeks off work to organize a post-nuptial bash for 300 at the Palace. Apparently she angered Royal officials by ordering in mirrored disco balls for the breakfast/disco event. According to the Daily Mail the Queen's minions were not overly impressed with transforming Buckingham Palace into a glittery 80's style nightclub but Prince William stepped in and overruled saying he wanted something different from the parties being thrown by his grand-mother which will be a formal champagne and canape reception immediately following the I-do's.

While big sister Kate has been involved with Prince William for years, Pippa has quickly become one of England's most eligible bachelorettes. In 2008, Tatler magazine named her the number one society singleton. Last December she started dating city financier and former professional cricketer, Alex Loudon who is an old friend of Prince William's and will reportedly be Pippa's date for the big day.

She is said to have honed her party planning skills as a student at the University of Edinburgh where she arranged after-dinner activities at posh house parties for other students who were 'bright young things,' i.e. either titled or wealthy.

Currently living in a flat in Chelsea that her parents purchased with her brother James. Both of the Middleton siblings are not the shy and retiring type. Photos of Pippa clad in a dress constructed out of toilet paper and photos of little brother James clad in well, a dress circulated the web but have been discreetly pulled down in advance of their big sister's wedding day.

Somehow we get the feeling we're going to be seeing lots more of Princess Kate's lil' sis.

Liz McClarnon party update: Liz calls heat. AW

Aw. So this morning we bought you the news that we'd tried and failed to get into Liz McClarnon's 30th birthday party last night (as you do), only to be thwarted by the PR would had said we could come down in the first place. Embarrassing.

Well it seems even Liz would have been happy for us to be there, the lovely lady herself has just been on the phone to us to say the following,

"I've only just heard about what happened last night and I'm so sorry. I love heat magazine and you would have been more than welcome to come and join the party. I wish I'd known about this at the time so I could have sorted it out. I owe you a very large glass of wine next time I see you!"

What. An. Actual. Sweetheart. Appaz Mrs.PR pants who represents the restaurant the event was held at and not McClarnon herself didn't even check with Liz and her gang if we'd be alright to pop in and say hi (eat some cake). OOPS. Bit awkward.

P.S Sorry to Liz for any offence caused to you personally, we were just jealous we couldn't get to join in the fun, we'd got our best shoes on and everything.

P.P.S We're definitely up for wine, let's split the cost and take a bottle.
