MusiCares to honor Paul McCartney next year (AP)

NEW YORK – Paul McCartney will be honored as MusiCares person of the year during Grammy week next year.

The former Beatle will not only be honored for his music but also for his charitable side. Recording Academy President and CEO Neil Portnow says McCartney "exemplifies the phrase `artist/philanthropist.'"

The annual event celebrates a legend in the days before the Grammy Awards. Previous honorees include Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond. An array of music stars pay tribute by singing their songs, and the honoree sometimes performs as well.

MusiCares helps musicians who are struggling due to financial, medical or other reasons. McCartney says he's privileged to try and make the world a better place through charity and he's honored by the MusiCares tribute.

The announcement was made Tuesday.

The awards will be presented in Los Angeles.

Rock Hall to honor Aretha Franklin with series (AP)

NEW YORK – Aretha Franklin is already a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but this fall, she'll be honored by the hall once again, as part of its American Music Masters series.

The Queen of Soul will be the subject of a week-long celebration by the hall and Case Western Reserve University. It kicks off Oct. 31, includes an all-day symposium and ends with an all-star tribute concert on Nov. 5. Performers for that show have yet to be announced.

In a statement released Tuesday, the 69-year-old Franklin said she was "thrilled and delighted" to be honored and planned to take part in the festivities.

Franklin returned to the concert scene this year after surgery for an undisclosed condition.

Past honorees include Bessie Smith, Les Paul, Janis Joplin and Woody Guthrie.

Emmy organizers honor TV crime show host John Walsh (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – "America's Most Wanted" host John Walsh, whose TV crime show has helped police capture 1,500 fugitives and find 50 missing children since 1988, is being given an honorary award from organizers of the Emmys.

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences on Tuesday said it will give its Governors Award to Walsh for making an impact on society through the use of TV.

"John Walsh has dedicated his life to the betterment of society, and while doing so has used television in an inventive and extraordinary way," academy chief executive John Shaffner said in a statement. "His contribution to society goes far beyond just hosting a hit TV show, but sets a prime example of how television can be used to convey an important message."

Walsh became known around the world as a crime fighter and victims' advocate after his 6 year-old son Adam was abducted from a mall near his home in Hollywood, Fla., on July 27, 1981 and found murdered two weeks later.

The case remained unsolved for 27 years until 2008 when police linked the slaying to a serial killer who died in prison and who claimed responsibility for hundreds of murders.

Walsh's personal tragedy is credited with sparking the creation of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in 1984 after President Ronald Reagan signed the "Missing Children's Assistance Act."

His work on America's Most Wanted, which tells viewers of crimes and alleged perpetrators who are still at large, helped spark child protection laws, including "The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act" that tracks convicted sex offenders who disappear after they're released from prison.

He is one of three Honorary U.S. Marshals and was named "Man of the Year" by both the U.S. Marshals Service and the FBI. Walsh will receive the Governors Award during the Creative Emmy awards in Los Angeles on September 10.

Convicted H'wood wiretapper says he upholds "honor" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap) – How about a little respect for the guy who pioneered phone hacking, huh?

That seems to be imprisoned former Hollywood detective Anthony Pellicano's viewpoint in his recent exclusive talk with Newsweek (the weekly news publication's sister site, The Daily Beast, published the transcript Sunday).

Serving a 15-year term at Texas' Big Spring Federal Correctional Institution, the 67-year-old Pellicano told Newsweek that, when it comes to tapping telephones, "I was ahead of my time."

As for the phone-hacking scandal currently rocking the core of the News Corp. media empire, well, Pellicano is not impressed.

"I was the top of the ladder," he said. "Just to talk to me it cost $25,000. These guys were stringers who worked with reporters to try to get information on a celebrity."

Convicted three years ago on 76 counts including wire fraud, racketeering and wiretapping, Pellicano apparently showed Newsweek reporter Christine Pelisek a tattoo he had done on his shoulder, shortly before going to prison, that reads, "honor."

Pellicano said the tat is to remind him that the government tried to break him -- tried to get him to spill the beans on all of the Hollywood secrets he supposedly knows -- but break he did not.

"When you are my client, you become my family," he told Pelisek.

While he might not break, Pellicano certainly bends, offering a few teasers.

Recalling when the FBI raided his office, he said, "They come to my business ... I have personal stuff on Arnold ... If they found that stuff, he never would have been governor."

Pellicano also revealed that he agreed to work for Michael Jackson during the late star's 1993 child molestation trial on one condition -- that the singer wasn't guilty.

"I said, 'You don't have to worry about cops or lawyers. If I find out anything, I will f--- you over.'"

Regarding his later decision to dump Jackson as a client, Pellicano explained, "I quit because I found out some truths ... He did something far worse to young boys than molest them."

Later in the article, Pellicano insists he isn't bitter, but says he doesn't think his sentencing is fair, at least compared to Norway's recent mass killer.

"I don't have any hard feelings against the government," he told Newsweek. "Every U.S. citizen is subjected to the laws of this country. This guy in Norway (faces) a maximum sentence of 21 years."

Pellicano -- who has been married four times and says he gets few visitors these days -- added that he has been asked to pen an autobiography. The crowded conditions at Big Spring, however, aren't optimal for writing.

"Imagine trying to write a story with 100 guys around you," he said. "There is nowhere to go for quiet."

"Lucy" look-alikes honor Lucille Ball's 100th birthday (Reuters)

JAMESTOWN, New York (Reuters) – More than 900 red-lipsticked, redheaded women -- and men -- gathered near a "Vitameatavegamin" sign in the hometown of "I Love Lucy" star Lucille Ball to mark her 100th birthday over the weekend, setting a world record for most Lucy look-alikes.

Sporting upswept hairdos and blue-and-white polka dot dresses, Saturday's crowd of 915 Lucy Ricardos established the first Guinness world record in her honor. It was all part of the annual Lucy Fest in Jamestown, which drew fans from as far away as Australia to the normally sleepy town of 30,000 people in upstate New York.

"This is a once in a lifetime experience. It has to be the best time in my life," said Cindy Wilson, 22, of Cleveland, Ohio.

Wilson started watching the "I Love Lucy" show in reruns when she was 7 years old and has a Lucy stick figure tattoo on her left foot, while sitcom husband Ricky adorns her right. She said her fiance's name is Ricky, and joked that's one reason she is marrying him.

Across generational and gender divides, those who love Lucy milled about a downtown plaza under a mural painted with the word "Vitameatavegamin" in three-foot-high letters. For Lucy fans, the well-known tincture made famous on her long-running TV sitcom needs no explanation.

Some revelers recited the word in unison, others sang "Happy Birthday" in honor of what would have been Ball's 100th birthday on August 6.

Amid the hoopla, a man proposed to his girlfriend, both wearing nightshirts imprinted with the image of a polka-dot dress and holding cardboard cutouts of Lucy up to their faces in accordance to Guinness' qualifying guidelines. She said yes and the crowd roared.

Kelly Wright, a natural redhead from Grand Valley, Pennsylvania simply wore one of her own polka dot dresses to look the part.

Local resident Steve Waterson donned a patterned shirt but was missing the lipstick participants needed to be considered a true Lucy.

Floating among the waves of Lucys were some people dressed as Ricky, played on the show by Ball's real life husband Desi Arnaz, and their TV neighbors Fred and Ethel Mertz, who often baby-sat for Little Ricky Ricardo.

"I Love Lucy" ran for 179 episodes from 1951 to 1957 and has been seen in reruns for decades since.

A fact sheet distributed by the festival sponsor, the Lucy-Desi Center, says 40 million people tuned in to watch the birth of Little Ricky in 1953. That's compared with the relatively modest 29 million who watched the inauguration of President Dwight D. Eisenhower the following day.

Michael Stern, whose new book "I had a Ball, My Friendship with Lucille Ball" is the only such account authorized by the children of Ball and Arnaz, told Reuters the relationship began when as a 12-year-old boy growing up in Los Angeles, he got a chance to meet Ball.

"I brought my scrapbook of pictures to her mother and she said 'how'd you like to meet her?'" Stern said.

The two formed a sort of mother, son relationship for years afterward, he said. "She said 'look Michael, you can be my No.1 fan but you've got to get a job and stay in school.'... She was very serious, very down to earth."

The two would often catch reruns of the show in the 1980s. Ball, he said, never laughed at herself on screen.

"She would not critique herself. She would watch Ethel and Fred and Ricky and laugh at the jokes," he said.

The five day festival, which wraps up on Sunday, included performances by comedians including Joan Rivers and Paula Poundstone and cake with a cast of professional actors who impersonated Lucy, Ricky, Fred and Ethel in a re-creation of Ricky's Cuban-themed TV nightclub "The Tropicana."

"Oh, that's a good one," Lucy said, taking forkfuls from other guests' desserts and speaking through a mouthful of cake as the audience roared. "We'll have to get you another one."

Ball died in 1989 and was buried in California. Her daughter Lucie Arnaz had her moved to Jamestown's Lakeview Cemetery, fulfilling her wish to be buried next to her mother, said Lucy-Desi Center Head of Tour guides Susan Ewing.

Colin Firth adds honor from Queen Elizabeth to Oscar (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) – "King's Speech" actor Colin Firth was awarded an honor by Britain's Queen Elizabeth on Saturday, joining more than 900 people from all walks of British life in the twice-yearly list.

Firth, who won a best actor Academy Award for his portrayal of the stammering King George VI, the queen's father, in the Oscar-winning movie "The King's Speech" was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).

The 50-year-old actor has become an international favorite since playing the aloof but alluring Mr. Darcy in a 1995 television adaptation of the Jane Austen novel "Pride and Prejudice."

There were also awards for South African-born actress Janet Suzman, who becomes a "Dame," and for Roxy Music singer Bryan Ferry, who received a CBE.

Long-serving British light entertainment star Bruce Forsyth, 83, picked up a knighthood, while comic actors Bernard Cribbins, Tim Brooke-Taylor and Graeme Garden were all made Officers of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).

There was also a CBE for lawyer Mark Stephens, currently defending WikiLeaks chief Julian Assange over a Swedish extradition request for alleged sexual misconduct.

In the world of sport, England cricket captain Andrew Strauss was awarded an OBE after leading the national side to two Ashes series victories over Australia, home and away.

Fellow England cricketer Alastair Cook, a prolific scorer during the recent series against Australia and in the current series against Sri Lanka, won a lesser award, an MBE, while there was a knighthood for horse trainer Henry Cecil.

Golfer Lee Westwood, until last month ranked the world number one, was awarded an OBE.

Lil Jon receives honor for "Apprentice" earnings (AP)

DECATUR, Ga. – When Lil Jon was fired from the reality show "Celebrity Apprentice," the rapper-producer fell short of the amount of money he wanted to raise for his charity.

Lil Jon's charity thought his efforts were just enough. On Tuesday, he was honored by the United Methodist Children's Home for raising $80,000 through his endeavors on "Celebrity Apprentice."

The proceeds will be placed in an endowment fund to help educational opportunities and refurbish buildings at the sprawling 99-acre campus in suburban Atlanta.

Lil Jon's initial goal was to raise $100,000, but he was satisfied with the awareness the show brought to his cause. He was among the final four contestants along with John Rich, Meat Loaf and Marlee Matlin.

Rich won the competition on Sunday, taking home $250,000 for his charity.

Beyonce, Madonna honor Oprah in farewell shows (AFP)

CHICAGO (AFP) – The stars came out to honor Oprah Winfrey in a pair of spectacular farewell shows taped in front of 13,000 ecstatic fans as the talk show queen wraps up her 25th and final season.

Tom Hanks served as host and cheerleader for the evening, telling Winfrey: "Tonight you are surrounded by nothing but love" and thanking "a friend who had a classroom of millions" for everything she's done for her viewers.

Much was said about Winfrey's charity work, but even more was said about how she inspired her fans to lead better lives and help others.

"It's no secret that millions of people are inspired by Oprah," a gushing Madonna told the crowd.

"She's a self-made woman who's been at the top of her game for over 25 years and she is still kicking ass and encouraging people to dream big, to work hard, to read a book, to ask questions, to get an education no matter who you are or where you come from."

The two shows -- which will air Monday and Tuesday ahead of the final episode Wednesday -- were filled with surprises for Winfrey, who was brought to tears again and again.

Winfrey could do little more than shout "MJ is in the house!" when Chicago Bulls basketball legend Michael Jordan returned to Chicago's United Center arena to join her on stage.

She was also overwhelmed when Jaime Foxx serenaded her with "Isn't she lovely" and Stevie Wonder rose up from under the stage at the keys of a grand piano with a new song he'd written for her.

And she sat stunned as esteemed poet and personal mentor Maya Angelou told the story of Winfrey's life while Alicia Keys accompanied her on the piano.

"I'm just trying to stay inside my body, girls," Winfrey told her friends Gayle King and Maria Shriver as the tribute-filled show approached its emotional conclusion.

Dakota Fanning led a group of young "ultimate viewers" -- including one who thanked Winfrey for helping to "lift the shame of being abused and taught me it wasn't my fault."

"We call ourselves Oprah show babies. Your voice has been the soundtrack of our lives," Fanning said.

"We've learned from the Oprah show that we are enough. That we matter, that our lives are of value."

Beyonce stunned the crowd with a rousing performance of her female empowerment anthem "Run the World (Girls)."

"Oprah, because of you, women everywhere have graduated to a new level of understanding of what we are, of who we are, and most importantly, who we can be," Beyonce said before launching into the set.

Jerry Seinfeld got the audience laughing by thanking Oprah for teaching men how to be better husbands and how to survive disagreements by learning to talk as if they're on Oprah: "Just listen, nod and answer the question."

Will Smith hosted the second show with his wife Jada Pinkett Smith, who told Winfrey that, while she doesn't have children of her own, "you have mothered millions" and "that puts you in the status of a goddess."

Aretha Franklin, Usher, Josh Groban, Patti LaBell Rascal Flatts and Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth also put in rousing performances. Halle Barry, Katie Holmes and Queen Latifah were among the stars to pay tribute.

Winfrey's devoted fans may be losing a beloved afternoon companion, but they certainly won't have to say goodbye.

The cultural kingmaker -- whose comfy couches have launched scores of careers from Dr. Phil to the inventors of her "favorite things" -- expanded her media empire January 1 with the high-stakes launch of her OWN cable network.

The network -- a partnership between Winfrey's Harpo Productions and Discovery Networks -- will offer 600 hours of original fare in its first year along with movies, re-runs of the Dr. Phil show and several shows previously aired on Discovery Health.

"Oprah, as we get closer to saying goodbye to the Oprah Winfrey show as we know it, we will always be there for you as your next chapter begins," Tom Cruise vowed.

The first national episode of the Oprah Winfrey Show aired on ABC on September 8, 1986, and Wednesday's finale will be episode number 4,561.

An estimated 40 million Americans watch the show each week, which is distributed in 150 countries.

Five US presidents -- Jimmy Carter, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama -- have been among the show's 30,000 guests.

Minute's silence held in honor of Ballesteros (Reuters)

TERRASSA, Spain (Reuters) – Tears streamed down Jose Maria Olazabal's face as he stood in silence in memory of his great friend Seve Ballesteros, who died on Saturday aged 54.

Behind Olazabal, flags at the El Prat course where the Spanish Open was being played flew at half-mast in tribute to a sporting icon.

After the minute's silence for the game's most charismatic figure, Olazabal sought solace from Miguel Angel Jimenez as he buried his head in his fellow-Spaniard's shoulder.

The klaxon had sounded at 1445 local time, just over 12 hours after Ballesteros had passed away at his home in Pedrena, northern Spain, as a result of the brain cancer he had fought so hard to overcome.

On the course, players still involved in the third round of the Spanish Open -- the last title Ballesteros won on the European Tour -- halted play and stood with bowed heads.

Nearly everyone wore black ribbons to signify Ballesteros's passing.

Olazabal, the man with most reason to mourn as Ballesteros's triumphant Ryder Cup partner, had faced a conflict with his own feelings.

He wanted to pull out of the tournament in respect of Ballesteros but also felt he had to play, just as his great friend would have wanted.

"Olly's first shot of the day was very emotional," playing partner Colin Montgomerie said. "He did well to play at all. They were like brothers."

Olazabal knew Ballesteros for more than a quarter of a century.

"My first memory of Seve goes back to '83 or '84," he recalled on Saturday. "I was an amateur, and he called me to play in a charity event. It was a big surprise and I was very excited.

"What impressed me most in Seve was his strength, his fighting spirit and the passion he put into everything he did.

"I saw him for the last time the Saturday after the Masters. He was not well but his head was clear. We talked about many things, so many common memories, and particularly about the Ryder Cup.

"The best tribute we can pay to Seve is to go on playing for him, although no tribute will ever do justice to everything he did for golf and to everything he gave us."

Kris Jenner Gets Vanity Plates in Honor of 'Son' Lamar Odom

Talk about a supportive mother-in-law. From the look of Kris Jenner's Bentley, Lamar Odom is officially a part of the Kardashian clan.

Khloe Kardashian took to Twitter to show off her mom's new vanity plates. They read "LKRMAMA" or 'Laker Mama.' She tweeted, "Look at my mom's new license plates! Awww she loves Lam."

But this isn't the first time Jenner has showed her Lakers fandom. After daughter, Khloe, sent the Kardashian clan on a scavenger hunt around her house for three Lakers tickets, mama Jenner was the only one left without a golden stub leaving her alone and screaming in the kitchen: "All I want to do is go to a game."

Get to Know Pippa Middleton, Kate's Party Planning Maid of Honor

One member of the Middleton family who seems to be relishing her moment in the spotlight is Pippa, Kate's younger sister.

The 27-year-old, who will serve as the chief maid of honor at her sister's wedding on Friday, had paparazzi clamoring for her snap at the engagement party of Richard Branson's daughter Holly last week in London -- and she happily obliged. She already looks like a seasoned pro preening in front of the cameras.

Pippa, which is short for Philippa, works as a party planner three days a week at a company called Table Talk and two days a week editing an online magazine called The Party Time, which is an off-shoot of her parents' successful party supply company, Party Pieces.

She has taken the last two weeks off work to organize a post-nuptial bash for 300 at the Palace. Apparently she angered Royal officials by ordering in mirrored disco balls for the breakfast/disco event. According to the Daily Mail the Queen's minions were not overly impressed with transforming Buckingham Palace into a glittery 80's style nightclub but Prince William stepped in and overruled saying he wanted something different from the parties being thrown by his grand-mother which will be a formal champagne and canape reception immediately following the I-do's.

While big sister Kate has been involved with Prince William for years, Pippa has quickly become one of England's most eligible bachelorettes. In 2008, Tatler magazine named her the number one society singleton. Last December she started dating city financier and former professional cricketer, Alex Loudon who is an old friend of Prince William's and will reportedly be Pippa's date for the big day.

She is said to have honed her party planning skills as a student at the University of Edinburgh where she arranged after-dinner activities at posh house parties for other students who were 'bright young things,' i.e. either titled or wealthy.

Currently living in a flat in Chelsea that her parents purchased with her brother James. Both of the Middleton siblings are not the shy and retiring type. Photos of Pippa clad in a dress constructed out of toilet paper and photos of little brother James clad in well, a dress circulated the web but have been discreetly pulled down in advance of their big sister's wedding day.

Somehow we get the feeling we're going to be seeing lots more of Princess Kate's lil' sis.
