Fla. gov won't reappoint Anna Nicole Smith coroner (AP)

MIAMI – Gov. Rick Scott rejected a recommendation this week to reappoint the longtime South Florida medical examiner who made headlines after several high profile deaths, including model Anna Nicole Smith.

Dr. Joshua Perper said he was stunned when he learned Scott would not appoint him to another three-year term, saying he wished the governor's office had offered an explanation.

"I'm still baffled because the office of the governor didn't contact me before or after the decision to ask for another nomination," said Perper. "After 17 years this would be a courtesy act to call me and tell me what is the intention of the governor."

The Medical Examiners Commission recommended Perper continue his service, but Scott's office sent the chairman a letter Tuesday asking for other choices. Perper said the Broward County Commission also supported his reappointment, based on hundreds of positive questionnaires rating his performance from the state attorney, public defender and sheriff's office.

"Governor Scott wants to have options when choosing who will be the Medical Examiner going forward for Broward County. It's difficult to have options when only one name has been submitted," said Scott's spokesman Lane Wright.

Perper, a grandfatherly figure with a thick foreign accent, frequented national new shows after Smith, a 39-year-old former Playboy playmate, was found dead in her hotel room in 2007. Perper said he did not relish the publicity but always kept his door open to the media, at one point saying he'd given so many interviews, he felt he had a second job.

He later ruled her death an accidental overdose of the seldom prescribed sedative chloral hydrate and other medications. A link to Smith's autopsy report is still prominent on the agency's website.

Besides Smith, Perper has handled the autopsies of model Krissy Taylor, sister of supermodel Niki Taylor and Baltimore Orioles pitcher Steve Bechler. In 2003, Perper determined that the diet supplement ephedra contributed to the heatstroke that killed Bechler, who collapsed during a spring training workout. That finding helped lead to the supplement being banned by the federal government.

Perper, a Romanian born widower who also holds a law degree, said he will retire in a few months.

In 2009, he classified Bernice Novack's death as an "unwitnessed fall" after she was found dead in her home. The 86-year-old, whose husband founded the Fountainbleau Hotel, suffered a broken jaw and police found blood smeared on her car and on walls in the house, but they concluded no crime was committed.

But Perper later ruled the death a homicide, a day after the woman's daughter-in-law was accused in open court of plotting the beating death. Narcy Novack has since been charged with arranging the deaths of Bernice and Ben Novack, so she could acquire the family's multimillion-dollar estate, according to prosecutors.

Kronos Quartet, Patti Smith accept Swedish prize (AP)

STOCKHOLM – American string quartet Kronos Quartet and rocker Patti Smith have received the prestigious 2011 Polar Music Prize from Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf.

The musicians accepted their awards at a glitzy ceremony in Stockholm on Tuesday. Each award is worth 1 million kronor ($159,000).

A moved Smith said she was "humbled and inspired" to receive the award. She thanked her family and band members and appealed to the audience to "turn their hearts and minds and resources" toward the famine in Africa.

The Polar Music Prize is typically shared each year by a pop artist and a classical musician. It was founded by the manager of Sweden's legendary pop group ABBA, Stig Anderson, in 1989.

Previous laureates include Pink Floyd, Joni Mitchell, Bjork and Sir Paul McCartney.

Will Smith, Jada Pinkett, all smiles in public (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – One day after a magazine claimed that their marriage was in trouble, Hollywood super couple Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith appeared together in public Wednesday, smiling broadly for cameras and fans.

Their brief walk down a sidewalk outside a restaurant in the wealthy enclave of Malibu followed a story published online Tuesday by In Touch Weekly magazine saying the pair, who have two superstar children, were headed for a separation.

That story was attributed to an unnamed "insider" and was followed by a public denial in a statement issued on behalf of the Smiths.

"Although we are reluctant to respond to these types of press reports, the rumors circulating about our relationship are completely false. We are still together, and our marriage is intact," the pair said in the joint statement.

But the rumors persisted Wednesday with singer Marc Anthony, who co-stars with Jada Pinkett Smith on TV show "Hawthorne" and who recently split up with singer Jennifer Lopez, surfacing in reports as a possible suitor to his TV co-star.

In Malibu, Will Smith was asked by a reporter for celebrity news website TMZ.com to comment on the "ridiculous rumors" in the media, and Smith answered, "you just did."

Review: Connie Smith return is reason to celebrate (AP)

By MICHAEL McCALL, For The Associated Press Michael Mccall, For The Associated Press – Tue Aug 23, 8:36 pm ET

Connie Smith, "Long Line Of Heartaches" (Sugar Hill)

Of all the great country music queens to rise in the 1960s, Connie Smith may have the lowest public profile. Partly that is because in the early 1970s, as the world at large learned of Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton and Tammy Wynette, Smith retreated from touring to focus on raising her family and on recording albums that expressed her religious convictions.

Still, hard-core country fans always have heralded Smith as one of the great voices of her generation. So when Smith's new album "Long Line Of Heartaches" opens with a steel guitar — the instrument most closely identified with her best-loved recordings — and with the words "Here we go again.," her legion of fans across the country will rejoice.

On her first album in 13 years, and only her second since 1978, Smith provides even more reason to celebrate: Unlike her self-titled 1998 album, in which Smith flirted with contemporary country sounds, this time the 70-year-old singer concentrates solely on original songs featuring classic country sounds and themes.

From the torch ballad "I'm Not Blue" to the dance-floor shuffle of "Anymore," "Long Line Of Heartaches" serves as a welcome reminder of why Smith ranks among country music's most beloved artists.

CHECK OUT THIS TRACK: "Ain't You Even Gonna Cry," set mostly to a tenderly picked acoustic guitar and the moans of a steel guitar, illustrates why Smith's voice is such a revered instrument. With emotional restraint and careful diction, she delves into the pain of the moment when two lovers realize this is the moment one of them is walking away for good.

S.Africa cricket captain Smith 'weds Irish singer' (AFP)

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) – South African skipper Graeme Smith married Irish singer and model Morgan Deane at a private ceremony in Cape Town, media reported on Sunday.

The Sunday Times weekly newspaper said the couple exchanged vows at an intimate ceremony at St Bernard Catholic Church in Claremont on Saturday and afterwards joined family and friends at a reception overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

Both Smith, 30 and Deane, 26, took to Twitter just before the ceremony.

Deane twitted:"Today I'm getting married to the man of my dreams," while Smith tweeted: "Thanks for all your positive vibes!! Most exciting day of my life."

The couple got engaged in April when Smith flew to Ireland to pop the question after the Proteas' shock 49-run defeat to New Zealand sent them crashing out of the Cricket World Cup in March.

His move angered South African fans who accused him of dodging the fallout of the Proteas' exit when he did not return home with the team after their quarter-finals loss.

However he apologised to the fans for not returning from India with the team after the World Cup exit, saying he should have explained his reasons earlier.

The Sunday Times said Deane arrived at the church, which was decorated with arum lilies, in a black Bentley sporting a white ribbon.

She emerged wearing a white silk dress and towering white peep-toe pumps holding a bouquet of white roses.

Smith wore a navy suit and tie with a white shirt.

Friends and family of the bride flew in from Ireland for the wedding.

Newsman Harry Smith leaving CBS for NBC (AP)

NEW YORK – Newsman Harry Smith is leaving CBS News after 25 years to jump to NBC.

NBC said Friday that an official announcement of his new job at the network will come Monday.

Smith had two separate stints as an anchor for CBS' morning news show, totaling 17 years on the early riser beat. He was abruptly taken off that job at the end of last year when CBS decided on wholesale changes to the perpetually third-rated broadcast.

Smith joined CBS News in Dallas in 1986.

CBS News President David Rhodes said in a memo to network staff that Smith was a "fixture" at the network.

He said that "if you saw Harry's piece closing the "CBS Evening News" that first Monday after the Japanese tsunami, you know what great work he is capable of."

Harry Smith leaving CBS News for NBC (Reuters)

NEW YORK (TheWrap) – CBS News veteran Harry Smith is leaving the network to join NBC, six months after CBS replaced his "Early Show" team.

NBC said a formal announcement of Smith's hiring will come Monday. Smith, who joined CBS in 1986, will head to a new primetime newsmagazine show with Brian Williams, according to media reports.

CBS announced in November that it would replace Smith, Maggie Rodriguez and Dave Price on the morning show, which lags behind "Today" and "Good Morning America." The new team of Erica Hill, Chris Wragge and Maggie Castro took over at the start of the year.

CBS News President David Rhodes announced Smith's departure in a memo to staff:

"Harry Smith has been a fixture here at CBS News for a generation -- he joined us in Dallas in 1986 -- but today he's decided to move on.

"Until late last year Harry anchored the 'Early Show,' where for years he took us through breaking news events from the war in Iraq to the tsunami in Sri Lanka to Columbine and Oklahoma City. Harry conducted news-making interviews with the biggest names in politics and entertainment.

"During the course of his career here, Harry sat down with six presidents, from Barack Obama back to Richard Nixon. In my own recent time at CBS News I enjoyed working with Harry as he reported from Egypt, Libya, Malta, and Japan. Frankly, we may have enjoyed all those assignments more than he did -- he's seen a lot of airport departure lounges over his career and especially in the last four months.

"If you saw Harry's piece closing the 'CBS Evening News' the first Monday after the Japanese tsunami, you know what great work he is capable of."

"I want to thank Harry for his extraordinary contribution to CBS over 25 years."

Will Smith is frontrunner for Tarantino's next film (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Will Smith has emerged as the frontrunner to star in Quentin Tarantino's next film, a spaghetti Western about a slave in the Old South who teams with a German bounty hunter to search for his wife.

Tarantino stalwarts Samuel L. Jackson and Christoph Waltz also are circling key parts.

"Django Unchained," Tarantino's follow up to his worldwide blockbuster Inglourious Basterds, will be distributed domestically by the Weinstein Co. but Tarantino is in the process of selecting a studio partner to release the film internationally. Sources say he is meeting with Universal executives today, and similar meetings with Sony, Paramount, Warner Bros. and possibly others have been scheduled.

Sources prepped for those meetings say Tarantino would like Smith to star in the film, the script for which has been making the rounds in recent days to wide acclaim. No official offer has been made to Smith, and any deal would of course be subject to working out financials, which might be difficult given Smith's status as one of Hollywood's few sure-thing stars.

Indeed, although Smith has been out of multiplexes since 2008's "Seven Pounds," he is still considered among the top two or three box office draws worldwide.

Smith is being teed-up for the title role of Django, a freed slave who seeks to reunite with his slave wife, a journey which will see him team up with a German bounty hunter to take down an evil plantation owner.

Tarantino wrote the bounty hunter part with Waltz in mind, according to insiders. The German ends up training Django and helping him seek his wife.

Jackson would play the house slave to the bad guy, Monsieur Calvin Candie. The slave is an expert manipulator and will face off with Django.

Smith and his representatives have received the screenplay, which could be a hot potato due to the themes of racism and the liberal use of the N-word. It's unclear whether Smith has read the script yet. The actor manages his image very carefully but the part is heroic and could be iconic. And let's not forget that Denzel Washington won his two Oscars playing characters who used the N-word.

Tarantino is aiming for a fall shoot in the South, possibly in Louisiana, but the exact locale has not been determined.

Kevin Smith Lost 65 Pounds After Being Kicked Off Airplane for Being Too Fat

Forget hitting the gym to shed those extra pounds. Just get kicked off a plane for being "too fat," and you'll be so traumatized you'll have to lose the weight!

At least that was the case for Kevin Smith. The director and 'Jay and Silent Bob' star told Joy Behar about his 65-pound weight loss in a high-energy interview that led her to ask, "Are you on amphetamines?"

Last February, Smith was furious when Southwest airlines threw him off a flight from Oakland to Burbank because they deemed him too fat to fly. He took to his Twitter page to express his rage towards the airline. In one tweet he wrote: "The
