Beyonce's baby, Gaga's alter-ego spice up VMAs (AP)

By SANDY COHEN, AP Entertainment Writer Sandy Cohen, Ap Entertainment Writer – Mon Aug 29, 2:26 am ET

LOS ANGELES – BEYONCE'S SURPRISE DATE: Beyonce made a big announcement that practically upstaged the MTV Video Music Awards — and she did it without saying a word.

The 29-year-old superstar announced her pregnancy on the red carpet by cupping her stomach in an "I'm expecting" sort of way. Wearing a blond ponytail and flowing red gown, she used her hands to show the tiniest beginnings of a baby bump.

A publicist for the pop star confirmed the pregnancy to The Associated Press Sunday.

Beyonce and Jay-Z were married in 2008. This will be their first child together.

Jay-Z offered a (much smaller) surprise of his own Sunday: He performed alongside Kanye West on the VMA stage.

Beyonce took the stage herself later in the show, telling viewers, "I want you to feel the love that's growing inside of me."

At the end of her performance, she unbuttoned the sequined blazer she was wearing and rubbed her tummy on stage. The camera cut away to Jay-Z, who beamed a broad smile.

RECORD ADVERTISEMENT: Lil Wayne is taking advantage of his Video Music Awards performance by dropping his anticipated new album the very same night.

The tattooed rapper closed the Video Music Awards with tunes from his new album as an ad blinked on the bottom of the screen reading: "Be the first to download `Tha Carter IV' on iTunes."

The album was to be released digitally at midnight on Aug. 29 and in stores later that day.

"There's only one man brilliant enough to piece this plan together," rapper Drake said as he introduced Lil Wayne.

Wayne opened with the melodic "How to Love" before tearing off his shirt and jumping around during "John," which borrows heavily from Black Sabbath's familiar "Iron Man" riff.

Fellow rapper Rick Ross called Wayne's strategically timed album release "big for hip hop."

"The strategic moves we've been seeing in the last few months, from the release of "Watch the Throne" and the pop-up stores, etcetera, I think it's big for hip hop and it's only going to continue to open doors for biggest numbers and bigger profits and a bigger future," Ross said.

WHAT A DRAG: It was ladies' night at the Video Music Awards, as Katy Perry, Adele, Beyonce and Lady Gaga were among the top performers and winners. But Gaga, and later Nicki Minaj, were also tuned into their masculine sides.

Gaga opened MTV's Video Music Awards dressed in drag as her male alter-ego, Jo Calderone, who sports short dark hair and smokes constantly. She/he sat down at the piano and performed Gaga's latest single, "You and I."

The envelope-pushing artist (who wore a dress made of meat to last year's VMAs) remained dressed as Calderone throughout the night. After accepting the award for best female video for "Born This Way," Calderone came into a backstage press room smoking a cigarette and drinking what looked like whiskey. She stamped the cigarette out on the carpet before posing for photos.

Asked what she can express as Calderone that she can't as Gaga, she replied, "I don't understand the question." She said Gaga asked Calderone to come in her stead, saying, "If you really love me, you'll go instead of me and you'll get in that spotlight."

"So I did," said Calderone, describing himself as a guy from New Jersey whose family hails from Palermo, Italy.

"I'm not a singer or a model or an actor or anything. I'm a guy," she said. "I'm just a guy, you know, and I just wanted to show my girl how much I love her, that's all."

Earlier in the evening, Nicki Minaj, winner of the hip-hop video award, said her new album will feature her inner male artist, Roman.

"He's a boy that lives inside of me," Minaj said. "He's a lunatic and he's gay."

BRITNEY TRIBUTE: Britney Spears has made many memorable appearances at the Video Music Awards (that liplock with Madonna, dancing with a snake to "Slave 4 U"), and she was honored for them with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

Lady Gaga, dressed in drag as her male alter-ego, presented the moon man trophy to a smiling Spears.

"One of my biggest inspirations was Britney Spears," Gaga said. "Britney taught me how to be fearless. She taught us all how to be fearless. She's a pop-music legend and the industry would not be the same without her."

Gaga's male Jo Calderone character then lingered, apparently hoping for a kiss from Spears, but Spears demurred.

"I've done that already," she said.

Dancers performed a medley of Spears' most popular songs, iconic outfits and signature dance moves.

"This award means so much to me," she said. "Especially on the night before Michael Jackson's birthday. He had such a huge influence on me."

But other celebs at the Video Music Awards said Spears was their big influence, including teen superstars Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber.

"She's been a huge inspiration to me," Gomez said. "I just think that she doesn't really take no for an answer. A lot of people try to bring her down and maybe judge her too quickly, and she still makes a comeback and she's still hot."

Bieber called Spears "an icon," saying, "She opened the doors for young people to do what they love."

Calif. taxidermist preserves Gaga's meat dress (AP)

KETCHIKAN, Alaska – A California taxidermist has earned a rare place in pop history.

Sergio Vigalato (VIG'-uh-lot-oh) preserved Lady Gaga's now-famous raw-meat dress for display in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland.

The project has prompted a swarm of media interest in the 66-year-old former Southeast Alaska charter boat skipper who's originally from Brazil.

Vigalato operates American Taxidermy in Burbank, Calif. That's where he was contacted by the museum about preserving the dress that Lady Gaga wore at the September 2010 MTV Video Music Awards.

Vigalato was unaware of the dress or the artist when reached two months after the show. But he agreed to the project anyway.

The ensemble, which Lady Gaga said was a statement about equality, arrived at his shop frozen and decomposing. He restored it over the next three and a half months, and the dress went on display in June.

Lady Gaga's YouTube account is suspended (AP)

NEW YORK – Even one of online video's biggest stars isn't immune to copyright claims.

Lady Gaga's YouTube account was suspended Thursday. The notice read that the suspension was due to "multiple or severe violations of YouTube's copyright policy."

By late Thursday, the account had been restored, much to the glee of Gaga's Little Monsters.

The Google Inc.-owned YouTube declined to comment. It's YouTube policy to remove accounts after three copyright violations.

Reports have suggested that the infringing video was a recently uploaded clip of Gaga's performance on Fuji TV. Messages left with Gaga's publicist and record label, Interscope, weren't immediately returned Thursday.

The account, "ladygagaofficial," is one of two for Gaga. The removed channel is run by Gaga's camp, while she also has an unaffected Vevo account.

The Vevo account, which has more than 1.6 billion views, generally debuts her music videos. Co-owned by Universal Music Group and Sony Entertainment, Vevo is a music video platform that also distributes videos on YouTube.

On Thursday, Gaga's HBO concert special "Monster Ball Tour at Madison Square Garden" earned five Emmy Award nominations.

Lady Gaga's 'meat dress' goes to Rock Hall of Fame (AP)

CLEVELAND – Lady Gaga made history at last year's MTV Video Music Awards when she turned butcher's cuts into high fashion.

On Thursday, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland unveiled the singer's raw-meat dress to the public. The dress — made of layers of Argentinian beef — was kept in a meat locker, placed in a vat of chemicals and then dried out by taxidermists in California before being transported to the museum.

Hall of Fame spokeswoman Margaret Thresher says the dress took on a "dark, beef-jerky" look while dehydrating, so it was painted to look "fresh" afterward. The entire process took several months to complete.

The dress is being displayed as part of the "Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power" exhibit, which runs until February 2012.

Gaga's "Born This Way" seen selling 1 million in first week (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Amazon will get another chance to sell Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" for 99 cents Thursday.

On Monday the demand for the album crashed the download store's servers.

The Amazon MP3 store wrote on Twitter: "We're doing it again and this time we're ready." According to Billboard's prediction, "Born This Way" likely will be No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart next week. The album has already sold more than 300,000 downloads.

Gaga's album will be the first one to hit the 1 million sales mark in a week since Taylor Swift's "Speak Now," with more than a million copies sold in a week in November.

Gaga's "Born This Way" projected to sell 800,000 copies (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Billboard) – Promotions around Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" -- including Amazon's controversial decision to sell digital copies of the album for just 99 cents on Monday and Best Buy's giveaway of the album with a smart phone -- have both pumped sales expectations and caused gripes in the retail sector about how the album sales will be tallied for the Billboard 200.

With shipments reaching 2.1 million units and strong digital sales expected -- boosted by the Amazon promotion, despite its technological challenges -- sources say Universal Music Group is officially projecting first-week sales in the range of 800-850,000 units, and less-official projections are even higher.

But brick-and-mortar retailers who try to operate on tight profit margins for music are up in arms about the promotions, with some arguing that both Amazon's 99-cent sales and the Best Buy giveaway counts should be excluded from the numbers that are tallied for the Billboard 200.

In fact, Billboard's chart executives are excluding Gaga's Best Buy giveaway numbers from the Billboard 200, as both the data service and publication have a longstanding policy of not counting albums that are given away by retailers to consumers at no cost -- either as a stand-alone promotion or as part of a bundle with another item -- for charting purposes.

But sales resulting from the Amazon 99-cents promotion will be factored into the Billboard 200, as those sales indicate consumer intent. (Currently no price minimums for charting inclusion have been established by Billboard for the sale of stand-alone albums, as a pricing policy is difficult to police with only sales volume -- and not consumer cost -- being tracked by SoundScan's data collection system.)

Even before these promotions, sales projections for "Born This Way" have been a rollercoaster -- those projections even changed this week, climbing by a couple hundred thousand units between Monday and Tuesday in the wake of the Amazon deal.

In March, before any songs from the album apart from its title track had been released, anticipation was building among industry distribution, sales and retail executives that the album could be the first since Taylor Swift's "Speak Now" to reach the million-unit-debut-week milestone.

Retailers and label sales and distribution executives were pointing to the then-new Target "Born This Way" sales promotion as the catalyst for their million-unit expectations. At that time, sources said Target was going to feature the album in a $10 million television campaign, which would have been its biggest to date. In contrast, Target's Taylor Swift "Speak Now" promotion was projected at about $7 million.

But Gaga and Target soon dissolved their deal, reportedly due to differences over the company's support for political candidates opposed to gay rights; the initial million-unit first-week sales projections dissolved as well.

But regardless of the Target promotion, Universal Music Group executives had been more cautious in their sales projection for "Born This Way," because female pop singers rarely have first-week album sales on that scale, although they do enjoy big first-week track download sales.

The results of the Amazon promotion will be a key influencer in how "Born This Way" performs in its debut week. Up until now, Amazon has never produced a 100,000-sales week for an album, but some expect that to happen this week for "Born This Way," despite the download issues. The promotion played a big role in the upward trend of sales projections this week.

"Amazon offers great deals on some of the bestselling albums every day and we constantly look at ways to delight our customers," an Amazon rep told Billboard.biz on Tuesday. "Since its launch, 'Born This Way' has held the top spot on our bestselling albums list. We knew that customers would love this album and we were thrilled to make it the Deal of the Day yesterday."

Yet beyond all the promotions and precedents and some merchants and competing label-sales executives feel Lady Gaga is overexposed and may suffer a sales backlash. Yet she's the rare artist who is equally talented as a musician and as a media magnet, and that brings her a level of credibility and support not often seen for today's megastars.

As one major label sales executive told Billboard earlier this year, ", I wasn't dismissive, I just wasn't interested. I thought she was just another pop star. I didn't know she was a serious artist. If you listen to her in interviews, she is very articulate. People see her in a different light. She is being seen as an artist who has paid her dues.

"People are rooting for her."
