Mel Gibson plans to produce film on Jewish hero (AP)

LOS ANGELES – Mel Gibson, who reportedly made anti-Semitic remarks during a drunken driving arrest five years ago, is now producing a film about the life of Jewish hero Judah Maccabee.

Gibson's publicist, Alan Nierob, told The Associated Press Friday that Gibson is working on a deal with Warner Bros. to develop the film through his company, Icon Productions. What Gibson's exact role will be — whether he might direct or even star in the film — hasn't been determined.

"Warner Bros. would like him to direct," Nierob said. "He is the first choice for the studio to direct it, but until there's a deal in place and a script that's finished, it will be his choice as to whether to direct it or not."

Joe Eszterhas of "Basic Instinct" and "Flashdance" fame is writing the script. No timetable is in place for it to be completed and for production to begin.

But Gibson's involvement with bringing Maccabee's story to the screen in any form has angered some Jewish leaders. Maccabee, who's acclaimed as one of the greatest warriors in Jewish history, helped inspire the celebration of Hanukkah.

"We would have hoped that Warner Bros. could have found someone better than Mel Gibson to direct or perhaps even star in a film on the life of the Jewish historical icon Judah Maccabee," Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, said in a statement. "As a hero of the Jewish people and a universal hero in the struggle for religious liberty, Judah Maccabee deserves better."

Rabbi Marvin Hier, dean and founder of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, said: "Casting him (Gibson) as a director or perhaps as the star of (a film about) Judah Maccabee is like casting (Bernard) Madoff to be the head of the Securities and Exchange Commission, or a white supremacist as trying to portray Martin Luther King Jr. It's simply an insult to Jews."

The American Gathering of Holocaust Survivors and their Descendants said: "Holocaust survivors are aghast that a major Hollywood studio would join with Mel Gibson in this venture and view it as an affront to all victims of anti-Semitism, intolerance, and sexism."

Nierob declined to respond to the backlash from Jewish leaders. Warner Bros. had not responded by Friday afternoon to a request for comment on the project itself or the negative reaction it has drawn.

Gibson, the Oscar-winning director of "Braveheart," has defended himself against accusations of anti-Semitism ever since his 2006 drunken driving arrest, in which a deputy's report revealed Gibson made Jewish and sexist slurs while in custody.

Last month, he reached a $750,000 settlement with his ex-girlfriend, Russian musician Oksana Grigorieva, and agreed to continue providing housing and financial support for their young daughter to resolve a bitter legal fight that followed sexist, racist rants attributed to the actor.

His last project was "The Beaver," a drama in which he starred opposite director Jodie Foster as a man who sinks into such a deep depression, he can only communicate through a beaver hand puppet. Gibson earned strong reviews for his performance but the film itself, which came out in May, only made about $6.4 million worldwide.

Director plans Arab-American trilogy with Sienna Miller film (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) – "Just Like a Woman," a movie starring Sienna Miller, is the first in Oscar-nominated director Rachid Bouchareb's planned trilogy about the changing relationship between Americans and the Arab world.

The French Algerian director, who has been nominated for Best Foreign Language Film three times, told TheWrap that he has finished principal photography on "Just Like a Woman," a road movie set in America.

He plans to make two more American-set films with Arabic sensibilities, including a buddy comedy and a Mexican border drama starring Forest Whitaker. All three will be English language.

"I'm always interested in what happens between the Arabic world and the West," Bouchareb said this week. "I come from North Africa, I lived in Paris and I made North African and Algerian and French movies, and now movies in America. But the stories are universal."

Bouchareb's past work has frequently explored conflicts between Arabs and Europeans. His 2010 film "Outside the Law" ("Hors-la-loi"), which dealt with the Algerian struggle for independence from France after World War II, drew protests when it screened at Cannes last year, but went on to win an Oscar nomination.

The Academy had previously nominated Bouchareb's "Days of Glory" in 2006 and "Dust of Life" in 1995.

Although he maintains a home in Paris, Bouchareb said he will spend most of his time in Los Angeles for the next two years while he makes the three films. The trilogy will be produced by Taghit LLC, an American company founded by Bouchareb and partner Jean Brehat in 1999.

The films:

* "Just like a Woman," stars Miller and Golshifteh Farahani as two women who meet as they journey from Chicago to New Mexico, both escaping broken marriages. Iranian actress Farahani plays an Arab immigrant fleeing her marriage in Chicago, while Miller plays a woman who leaves her cheating husband to pursue a secret passion for belly dancing.

* "Belleville's Cop," with "Outside the Law" star Jamel Debbouze in a comedy about a French-Arabic policeman teamed with an LAPD policewoman. Larry Gross, the co-writer of the classic cop buddy comedy "48 Hrs.," has written the script with Bouchareb.

"It's a comedy like some of the American movies I like so much," Bouchareb said, "with a lot of character and dialogue instead of stunts and action."

* An untitled feature with Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker as a Muslim ex-con dealing with anti-Arab sentiment (and the sheriff's paranoia about terrorists) in a small town along the Arizona/Mexico border.

"It's a story about three characters, but I find it interesting to have the political story of the border in the background," said Bouchareb, who did a number of interviews and met members of the private "Minuteman" militia while researching the film.

Production will begin late next year on "Belleville's Cop" and in 2013 on the final film.

The relationship between Americans and Arabs, Bouchareb said, is notably different than the one between Europeans and the Arab world -- and a big change from what it was in previous years.

"Between America and the Arabic world after Obama, it's more open and more understanding," he said. "It's in progress, and the American reaction to the Arabic revolution in Tunisia and Egypt was very important.

"The questions I'm asking in my movies here in America are 'Where are we?' and 'Where are we going?' and 'Why do we need to have hope in this relationship?'"

Indie stores object to Jay-Z, Kanye release plans (AP)

By CHRIS TALBOTT, AP Entertainment Writer Chris Talbott, Ap Entertainment Writer – Fri Jul 29, 6:18 am ET

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Scores of independent record store owners are calling out Jay-Z and Kanye West over release plans for their much-anticipated "Watch the Throne" collaboration.

Owners signed a letter that calls the exclusive deals with iTunes and Best Buy "bad news" and asks two of music's top stars to reconsider and allow more than 1,700 indie retailers equal access.

"We know that you are busy, and that you put most of your energies into creating great music, but we are writing to you in the hope that you will hear us and take the time to rectify this matter," the letter states. "As representatives of the independent record store music community, we are asking you to allow record stores and music fans equal access to your new album."

Exclusive deals are now common for top acts and it's unclear why the letter's original writers, the organizers of Record Store Day, chose this project to object. Doyle Davis, co-owner of Grimey's New and Preloved Music in Nashville, said some of the letter's signees will pull current and previous releases by the two artists from their shelves, though he will not go that far.

Jay-Z and West have agreed to give iTunes customers access to "Watch the Throne" on Aug. 8, four days ahead of everyone else. And Best Buy will exclusively sell a deluxe album till Aug. 23 when other retailers will have access.

Jay-Z's spokesman had no comment and West's did not immediately reply to an email from The Associated Press.

Record Store Day has become something of a holiday for independent retailers each April. This year, dozens of artists provided exclusive vinyl, performances and other perks.

Fans lined up, sometimes hours early and around the block, to score new music from acts like Radiohead and The White Stripes. Independent stores have suffered a marked decline over the last decade, casualties of the ascendance of box stores, digital music sales and a poor economy.

Now they say they just want a fighting chance.

"We believe this is a short-sighted strategy, and that your decisions will be doing great damage to over 1,700 independent record stores — stores that have supported you and your music for years," the letter states.

AP source: TV actress plans plea in NYC bar run-in (AP)

NEW YORK – Actress Paz de la Huerta is set to admit she threatened to hit a former reality TV figure in a trendy hotel bar, a person familiar with the case said Wednesday.

The "Boardwalk Empire" actress will plead guilty Thursday to harassment in her March encounter with Samantha Swetra, who appeared on the MTV reality series "The City," the person said. Harassment is a violation, not a crime.

De la Huerta's punishment will entail a fine and a day of community service, said the person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss the plans in advance of Thursday's court date.

De la Huerta's lawyer, Jamel Oeser-Sweat, says he's working with prosecutors toward a plea deal and expects some movement on the case Thursday. Prosecutors declined to comment.

De la Huerta, 26, was charged with assault and other offenses after authorities said she punched Swetra in the face, gave her a bloody nose and hurled a glass that cut Swetra's leg at the swanky Standard Hotel. De la Huerta also lashed out at Swetra with words, telling police she herself was "a real actress" and Swetra "a publicity-seeker, a fake actress," according to a court complaint.

She'll admit only to saying she'd hit Swetra, according to the person familiar with the case, who said de la Huerta may also get assessed for potential alcohol counseling.

Swetra has called the actress' behavior "atrocious and utterly intolerable" in a lawsuit over the incident; the suit seeks unspecified damages. De la Huerta, in court papers, has called the claims false.

De la Huerta plays Lucy Danziger, the fiery girlfriend of politician Enoch "Nucky" Thompson (played by Steve Buscemi) on "Boardwalk Empire." The show's second season is due to air this fall. De la Huerta also has appeared in films including "The Cider House Rules," "A Walk to Remember" and "The Limits of Control."

Swetra, a fashion buyer, appeared in several episodes of "The City." The show followed Whitney Port, a star of MTV's Los Angeles-based reality hit "The Hills," as she moved to New York to work for designer Diane von Furstenberg.

"Beaver" acclaim spurs Mel Gibson comeback plans (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – In May, Mel Gibson stood basking in the applause of the black-tie audience as "The Beaver" premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. But now Cannes has come and gone, and so has "Beaver," which grossed less than $1 million at the North American box office.

So where does Gibson, whose image was tarnished by his outbursts during his bitter custody battle with his former girlfriend, go from here?

Turns out, Hollywood is still eager to get into the Mel Gibson business. "Beaver" earned him some good reviews, and the general consensus is that any star would have had a hard time opening the quirky drama. "It was just a heavy, depressing, tough art movie," says one distributor.

Gibson hasn't had an agent since William Morris dropped him last summer, but several agencies are courting the actor, according to knowledgeable sources.

"There's a lot of interest on the agency side, but I don't think anything is imminent," says the actor's spokesman, Alan Nierob.

There are other questions on the table: Gibson has completed a film that he produced, "How I Spent My Summer Vacation," but it has yet to find a U.S. distributor even though it sold in most other global territories.

Directed by Adrian Grunberg -- who served as first assistant director on Gibson's "Apocalypto" -- the sure-to-be-R-rated movie is set in a tough Mexican prison where Gibson's character, an American on the run, is thrown after being seized by Mexican authorities. There, he strikes up a friendship with a 9-year-old boy.

Summit, Lionsgate and FilmDistrict have screened the picture, but so far no takers. "It's an interesting, cool movie," says one buyer who passed. "In fact, it has what I'd call a Tarantino-esque feeling."

There also is the question of what movie Gibson might take on next. Lately, he's been talking up a proposed film version of Randall Wallace's novel "Love and Honor," a swashbuckler set in the court of Catherine the Great. Wallace, who wrote Gibson's "Braveheart," is looking to direct.

More immediately, Gibson also has been offered a role in "Sleight of Hand," a heist movie with Gerard Depardieu and Til Schweiger; it is set to begin filming in Paris in August.

Winfrey plans 2-episode interview with James Frey (AP)

CHICAGO – Oprah Winfrey's interview with author James Frey will stretch over two episodes during the final full week of her talk show.

The shows will air May 16 and 17, more than five years after Winfrey accused Frey on live television of lying in one of his books. During a short promotional clip on Tuesday's episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" an announcer deemed it "the biggest controversy in Oprah show history."

Winfrey chose Frey's substance abuse story "A Million Little Pieces," for her book club in September 2005, making it a million-seller.

Frey subsequently acknowledged on Winfrey's show in January 2006 that he had lied in the book. Winfrey told him she felt duped and that he had betrayed millions of readers.

Winfrey's show ends May 25 after 25 years.

Kim Kardashian Reveals Weddings Plans

Though Kim Kardashian and beau Kris Humphries have only been dating for a few months, the reality star is already talking engagement rings and weddings plans.

"I've envisioned the whole thing," Kim tells Life & Style, on newsstands tomorrow. "I can't wait to get married. I've found my wedding dress -- I mean, I already know what my gown is going to look like. I've thought about it all for so long. What woman hasn't thought about her wedding since she was a little girl?"

Kardashian was even spotted talking to friend Brittany Gastineau about engagement rings while at the Beverly Hills Nail Design earlier this week. "I want Lorraine to design me a big diamond ring," Kardashian was overheard saying, referring to close friend and jewelry designer Lorraine Schwartz.

"Her idol is Elizabeth Taylor, who was a good friend of Lorraine's, so she wants to take inspiration from one of Elizabeth's prized possessions: her famous cushion-cut Krupp diamond. Kim's been talking to Lorraine about it a lot lately," says a source.

"I think I'll name my kids with K's to keep the tradition going," she says, with a friend revealing she wants to name her son Kristopher Jr. "I want a big family," Kardashian told Life & Style. "Three to five kids!"

Britney Spears Talks Possible Wedding Plans

Britney Spears has a lot to celebrate these days, including two top singles from her latest hit album, 'Femme Fatale.' But could the pop singer be celebrating an upcoming wedding in the near future? Maybe.

Spears dished about her relationship with boyfriend Jason Trawick to UsMagazine.com.

"We have such a great time together!" Spears said. "He makes me laugh, and we are so comfortable being ourselves."

The pair have been dating for over two years and have been seen out together with Spears' family, including her two young sons with ex-husband Kevin Federline.

But does all of the family bonding mean wedding bells are in their future?

Spears says she has "never been happier" now that she's with Trawick. A family source reveals that he was a source of light during her darkest days, adding he "was one of the only people who stuck by her through everything." Spears famously went through a public breakdown that resulted in a brief stint in a psychiatric hospital and losing custody of her sons.

"[Jason] was someone she felt she could be her true self with," the source said. "[Marriage] is what they talk about and the direction they're going in."
