Coppola, Ecclestone get stylish Italian weddings (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Two globe-trotting celebrities, Sofia Coppola and Petra Ecclestone, held weddings in Italy over the weekend, one low-key and the other over-the-top, according to media reports on Sunday.

Academy Award-winning filmmaker Coppola and her longtime musician boyfriend, Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars, were married on Saturday in the Italian village that was home to Coppola's grandparents.

On the same day, British heiress Ecclestone tied the knot with businessman James Stunt outside Rome, capping a three-day event with a reported price tag that ranged widely from $2 million to $8 million, according to various reports.

The Ecclestone-Stunt wedding took place at the same castle where Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes married, and featured fireworks as well as performances by Eric Clapton and the Black Eyed Peas, according to People magazine.

Ecclestone, a 22-year-old fashion designer, is the daughter of former Armani model Slavica and Formula One racing chief executive Bernie Ecclestone. She's no stranger to lavish spending: In July, she paid $85 million for the Los Angeles mansion that was once the home of Aaron and Candy Spelling.

By contrast, Coppola and Mars were wed in a civil ceremony before 80 guests at the Coppola family's villa in the southern Italian town of Bernalda.

Wearing a custom lavender gown by Azzedine Alaia, the 40-year-old bride walked down the aisle on the arm of her father, "Godfather" director Francis Ford Coppola, who owns the estate, according to reports.

Coppola and rocker Mars, 34, have two daughters: Romy, 4-1/2, and Cosima, 15 months.

Coppola won the screenwriting Oscar for her movie "Lost in Translation," and became the first American woman to be nominated for an Academy Award for directing.

Her first marriage, to director Spike Jonze, ended in divorce in 2003 after four years.

Sofia Coppola to wed in garden of ancestral town (AP)

ROME – Filmmaker Sofia Coppola is going back to her roots, getting married in the southern Italian town where her great-grandfather was born.

Coppola later Saturday plans to wed Thomas Mars, lead singer of the French rock band Phoenix and the father of their two young daughters. The ceremony will take place in the garden of a palazzo that her father, Francis Ford Coppola, has renovated in the center of Bernalda.

The town, near the UNESCO-recognized troglodyte settlement of Matera in southern Basilicata, was home to the elder Coppola's grandfather, Agostino.

Bernalda Mayor Leonardo Chiruzzi will perform the civil ceremony and says it will be simple but beautiful.

Chiruzzi said by phone: "If they wanted to do a Hollywood wedding, they wouldn't have done it here."

Francis Ford Coppola back at Comic-Con after 20 years (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Francis Ford Coppola is returning to Comic-Con next month for the first time since 1991, presenting portions of his latest film, "Twixt."

The panel at the San Diego Convention Center will be held on July 23. Not much is known about "Twixt," other than it takes Coppola to his early filmmaking roots when he was making flicks for Roger Corman. Coppola wrote the screenplay and self-financed the picture, which stars Val Kilmer, Bruce Dern, Elle Fanning, and Ben Chaplin.

Coppola calls it "one-part Gothic romance, one-part personal film, and one-part the kind of horror film that began my career." The project was also inspired by the writings of Edgar Allen Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Coppola first attended Comic-Con in 1991 as part of a presentation for his "Dracula" movie.

Comic-Con this year runs from July 21 to July 24. In a "Twixt" twist, will have a live music component. Indie performance artist Dan Deacon will be on hand to "demonstrate the interactive experience of the film," according to the Twixt filmmakers. The film incorporates both 2-D and 3-D elements.

Sofia Coppola to marry in southern Italy: report (AFP)

ROME (AFP) – US film director Sofia Coppola will marry French rock singer Thomas Mars in August in her family's ancestral town of Bernalda in southern Italy, an Italian newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The wedding will take place in Palazzo Margherita, the 19th-century villa that Coppola's legendary filmmaker father Francis Ford Coppola restructured in the town, La Stampa daily reported without citing a source.

Bernalda is where Sofia Coppola's great-grandfather came from.

Coppola was previously married to director Spike Jonze, whom she divorced in 2003, four years after their wedding. She and Mars, the lead singer in the French rock band Phoenix, have two children and live in Paris.

Hollywood heavyweights Steven Spielberg, Al Pacino, Sylvester Stallone and Nicholas Cage are all expected to attend the wedding, the report said.

The 40-year-old director is a winner of the Golden Lion in Venice for her film "Somewhere" and is perhaps best known for her 2003 work "Lost in Translation" starring Bill Murray which was nominated for four Oscars.
