Nancy Reagan fine after stumble at California event (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Former first lady Nancy Reagan is "fine" despite stumbling at an event in southern California where she was caught by Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, a spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

The 90 year-old Reagan was using a cane and walking down an aisle arm-in-arm with Rubio when she lurched forward at the event on Tuesday evening at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley, some 30 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

Rubio kept her from hitting the ground by holding onto her arm, as others rushed in to help support her.

"She's absolutely fine," said Melissa Giller, a spokeswoman for the Reagan Library.

"She still attended the dinner afterward and enjoyed herself," Giller said.

Nancy Reagan stumbled because she tripped on a post in the aisle she was walking down, Giller said.

The stumble occurred at an event where Rubio, a rising star in the Republican Party who was elected last year to the Senate, gave a speech that introduced the Senator from Florida to supporters on the West Coast.

Nancy Reagan was hospitalized in 2008 with fractures to her pelvis and lower spine that she suffered in a fall.

She keeps a busy schedule with her work for the library and the foundation honoring her late husband, Giller said.

She became first lady in 1981 after the late Ronald Reagan was elected president, and she helped him survive blows such as an assassination attempt and cancer surgery during his eight years in the White House. Ronald Reagan died in 2004.

California Supreme Court turns down Phil Spector appeal (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The California Supreme Court declined on Wednesday to review the 2009 murder conviction of music producer Phil Spector, turning down an appeal that had been filed by his attorneys.

Spector's lawyers had asked the state's highest court to take another look at the case after a three-justice panel from the California 2nd District Court of Appeal earlier this year upheld his conviction of second-degree murder in the 2003 shooting death of actress Lana Clarkson.

The killing occurred at Spector's suburban Los Angeles mansion, which was called the "Pyrenees Castle."

Spector, 71, is famous for his signature "wall of sound" recording technique, and he worked with the Beatles, the Ronettes and the Ramones in the 1960s and 1970s.

From stars to Skid Row: Royals end California tour (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Britain's Prince William and wife Kate ended their southern California stay on Sunday, bearing witness to both the poverty of Skid Row and the power of Hollywood.

In their first trip to the United States since marrying in April, the royal couple chose to favor charity and business over celebrity in their three-day visit.

But the glitterati of Hollywood were never far away, as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge drew the movie stars and studio executives to help raise funds and awareness for their causes in the entertainment capital of the world.

At their final event at Sony Studios to support military families and a job fair for veterans, William said he would take ideas home to Britain, where he serves as a Royal Air Force pilot and Kate is a military wife.

"I am delighted, therefore, that our Foundation -- and in that I include Harry, my low-flying Apache, very average brother -- is a partner in today's event," William quipped to the crowd. "We have much to learn from you."

Earlier in the day and far from the media glare, the royal couple was given a private tour of Skid Row, the gritty terminus for the homeless in downtown Los Angeles and a growing population of single mothers after the economic recession.

The tour was a late addition to the royal agenda and served as preparation for a visit to the Inner-City Arts Center for children living around Skid Row, one of the largest concentrations of homeless people in the United States.

It was also a stark contrast to the opulent events on Saturday -- a charity polo match in coastal Santa Barbara and a black-tie dinner with Hollywood royalty.

OUTDOING HOLLYWOOD GLAMOUR

Even with the emphasis on work and business, wherever they went William and Kate brought a royal glamour that even Hollywood couldn't emulate.

At the bright and airy arts center, Kate, dressed in a navy lace top and white pleated skirt from UK retail chain Whistles, donned a smock and painted a snail along with the kids. William, sans smock, appeared to paint something more abstract. It gave the couple an opportunity to be playful in public.

"William, do you know what you're doing? Start from the center," Kate said. He took the direction and returned to his canvas.

The day had started off on a glamorous note as the duke and duchess attended a private brunch with Hollywood notables like actress Reese Witherspoon and the CEO of Disney, Bob Iger, to garner interest in Tusk, a charity for African wildlife conservation.

They had also charmed the stars at the gala on Saturday night, where A-listers like Tom Hanks, Nicole Kidman and Barbra Streisand turned out to support the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, of which William is president. He asked the Hollywood power crowd to give opportunities to a new generation of British talent.

The California leg of the 11-day overseas visit had none of the large crowds of their Canadian tour, and most Californians had to resort to the media to get a glimpse of the royals.

But for the lucky few, like Vietnam war veteran Jose Ramos, the contact with the potential king and queen of Britain was special. He gave William his original jump wings from 1966.

"When he thanked me for being a veteran and serving in Vietnam, I offered them to him and he said he'd wear it proudly," Ramos said. "That was my original set. I don't give those out lightly for sure. I've worn them every day since I received them."

William and Kate talk tech on arrival to California (Reuters)

BEVERLY HILLS, California (Reuters) – Britain's royal newlyweds Prince William and Kate kicked off their maiden U.S. visit on Friday in a truly California way -- by networking with the technology and entertainment industries.

Arriving on a typically sunny Southern California day, the young royal couple went straight to Beverly Hills to promote technology and new media investment back home to a room of British and American entrepreneurs.

The opening event on the royal agenda set the stage for a three-day visit in which the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge aim to prioritize trade and charity work. With tough economic times at home, William and Kate will keep the celebrity quotient in check, even though they are on the giant celebrity stage that is Los Angeles.

That strategy hasn't stopped the media in the entertainment capital of the world from going all out for the high-wattage visit, the first ever by the former Kate Middleton to the United States.

Television carried live images of the couple's arrival from Canada after an eight-day visit there in their first official overseas trip since marrying in April. She wore a simple pale pastel dress, he a dark suit as they descended from the plane to meet California Governor Jerry Brown.

In another California tradition, the TV helicopters rode with the royal motorcade from the airport to Beverly Hills, while few onlookers watched the famous couple pass through the palm-lined streets.

UNCOMFORTABLE MOMENTS

William and Kate, in their first months of marriage, have earned a reputation for handily working the crowds in a relaxed and accessible way. But their first hours on California soil weren't without some seemingly uncomfortable moments.

Around 300 people at the Beverly Hills conference rose to their feet and applauded as William and Kate arrived to sit in briefly on a discussion aimed at promoting U.S. investment in new media technology companies in Britain.

Neither the prince nor his wife spoke publicly as the five executives continued with their onstage presentations for 15 minutes, almost ignoring the royal couple. William fidgeted with his sleeves while the Duchess listened attentively.

William and Kate later toured an exhibition room together, stopping to talk to technology executives and try out different social media and video gadgets.

"That was fantastic. I really enjoyed it," William thanked one of the conference organizers.

The potential future king and queen of Britain might feel more in their element on Saturday, when they head to the wealthy coastal city of Santa Barbara for a celebrity polo match in which William will play.

On Saturday night, they will attend a black tie, $25,000 per table dinner organized by the British Academy for Film and Television (BAFTA) of which William is president.

At that gala, networking will again be on the agenda as 42 young, British, emerging actors, directors, writers and video game designers come together with Hollywood studio executives.

Miss California, a history buff, named Miss USA (Reuters)

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) – A 21-year-old "history geek" representing California was named Miss USA at the annual beauty pageant in Las Vegas on Sunday.

Alyssa Campanella, who was born and raised in New Jersey which she represented at the Miss Teen USA contest in 2007, was considered among the favorites by pageant experts.

She will represent the United States at the Miss Universe pageant to be held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on September 12.

Campanella was crowned by incumbent Miss USA, Rima Fakih, a Lebanese-born Muslim who was the first Arab-American to hold the title.

Miss Tennessee came in second, Miss Alabama was third, and Miss Texas was fourth.

Campanella is a natural blond who dyed her hair red for a play several years ago and never went back. She told Reuters that she moved to Los Angeles about 18 months ago, and would like to remain there once her duties were over.

After revealing on the show that she was a "huge history geek" with a special interest in the Tudor and Stuart periods, she added in the interview that her favorite monarch was Mary, Queen of Scots, who was beheaded in 1587.

Campanella won the crown despite giving a muddled answer when a judge asked her whether marijuana should be legalized in California. She replied that marijuana for medical purposes was "very important," but had concerns about whether legalization would help in the war against drugs.

Miss Tennessee, 21-year-old journalism student Ashley Elizabeth Durham, declared that burning the American flag should not be protected by free speech and that burning religious books was "just a line that you do not cross."

DON'T STAND BY YOUR MAN

Miss Alabama, 22-year-old Madeleine Mitchell, said Internet bullies whose taunts force their targets to commit suicide should be prosecuted. Miss Texas, 25-year-old Ana Rodriguez, received loud applause when she said the wives of political figures caught in sex scandals should move on "and find a man who really loves you."

The fate of most of the 51 contestants was decided during a preliminary ceremony last Wednesday when a panel of judges selected 15 of the quarter-finalists based on their swimwear and evening gowns. A 16th spot was reserved for a contestant determined by fans' Internet voting.

During that event, Campanella tripped while parading in her evening gown.

The results were announced early in Sunday's ceremony, with contestants from Georgia, Arizona, Maine, Utah, Indiana, South Carolina, New York, Hawaii, Florida, Missouri and Maryland rounding out the top 15. Miss New Mexico was the fan favorite for the 16th spot.

The semi-finalists were then whittled down to Maine, Tennessee, Texas, South Carolina, Alabama, Hawaii, California and Maryland by a new panel of judges.

William and Catherine reveal glitzy California trip details (AFP)

LONDON (AFP) – Prince William and his new bride Catherine will host a black-tie celebrity reception to promote young British filmmakers in the highlight of their trip to California next month, royal officials said Wednesday.

The trip from July 8-10 -- which immediately follows their first official tour as husband and wife to Canada -- also features charity work including a meeting with inner-city children and a polo match.

"The visit will support the interests of the United Kingdom through the prism of the royal couple's interests," said Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, William's private secretary.

William will give a speech at the red-carpet dinner on July hosted by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) at the Belasco theatre in Los Angeles.

The prince is the organisation's president and the event has been staged to connect the best young British talent with Hollywood's "movers and shakers", palace officials said.

He will also play at the charity polo match in Santa Barbara. Catherine will award the winners' trophy.

The couple will visit Inner City Arts, an organisation helping children from a deprived Los Angeles neighbourhood, and meet US military veterans.

The United States and Britain are the two biggest contributors to the NATO force in Afghanistan.

Catherine is taking her hairdresser on the trip, one of seven aides travelling with the couple. Royal officials said this was a relatively small number, which reflects their efforts to appear sensitive to Britain's budgetary crisis.

The North America tour will be their first since their wedding at Westminster Abbey on April 29, which was watched by an estimated two billion people around the world and about one million on the streets of London.

William, the 28-year-old second in line to the throne, has visited the United States before but has never been on an official trip there, while the former Kate Middleton, 29, has never visited the US.

The tour of Canada will take place from June 30 to July 8.

Hanging Not So Loose: Fans of Street Art "Surfing Madonna" Anguished As California Town Wages Campaign to Move It (ARTINFO)

It seems that the saga of the "Surfing Madonna" is continuing to make waves in the San Diego suburb of Encinatas, long after a gaggle of mysterious street artists dressed as construction workers installed the unauthorized mosaic under a railroad bridge down the street from Moonlight Beach on April 22. Now, the city has hired a team of conservationists to remove the guerrilla artwork, which depicts Our Lady of Guadalupe hanging five. But it's proving to be not so simple to take down this piece of piously tubular street art: the mural has accrued a devoted local following, and conservators are left scratching their heads, having found that the piece is masterfully affixed to the wall. "This thing is perfectly done," Jesse Taylor, one of the conservators from the L.A.-based Sculpture Conservation Studio told Sign on San Diego. "It looks like they put in an extra structure to make sure it couldn't be removed." Encinitas is paying three conservators $2,000 in tax money to study how to tackle the take-down of the patron saint of the Americas. The Virgin is portrayed on the rogue 10-foot-square artwork riding a surfboard on the nose of which appears a portrait of St. Juan Diego, the indigenous American saint who is said to have seen the Virgin on a hillside in Mexico in 1531. The words "Save the Ocean" run down the left side of the mosaic.

Having been told that the unsanctioned piece was installed by experts, who did not just glue tiles onto the concrete wall with epoxy (as was originally reported), but bolted the work to the overpass, Encinitas Councilman (and former cartoonist) Jerome Stocks expressed his concerns. "That just furthers my argument that a big part of this particular piece of guerrilla art was to put the establishment or the administration in a difficult place," Stocks told Sign on San Diego. The councilman has expressed his concern that religious iconography on public property will invite lawsuits and imply that the city condones graffiti.

Meanwhile, however, fans of the surfing saint have rallied together, leaving flowers and votive candles at the base of the mosaic, according to the AP, and swelling the ranks of a Facebook page aimed at telling the city "it is NOT ok to destroy something so beautiful." In fact, far more people actually seem to be looking for ways to save the work than for ways to eradicate it. Local businesspeople are offering to display the salvaged mosaic on their property, and an AP report states that the Encinitas City Council is looking to relocate the work to a place where the public can continue to view it.

This is, of course, a community that rallies around even those public art displays that they only love to hate. The "Cardiff Kook" for instance, another surf-themed work in the neighboring town of Cardiff-By-The-Sea, is a bronze sculpture by Matthew Antichevich, the actual title of which is "Magic Carpet Ride." This three-year-old commissioned work, which cost some $120,000 to create and install, is frequently mocked by surf aficionados for the awkwardness of the pose, but has cultivated loving fans who dress up the "kook" — recently he has been costumed to look like Oprah (in honor of the final show), Osama bin Laden, and Vincent van Gogh.

Perhaps it's no wonder then, that locals are so staunch in their support of the "Surfing Madonna." According to Sign on San Diego, one incensed driver even stopped his semi-truck at a green light and hopped out, screaming at the conservation team, "What's wrong with you, don't do it! Get away from there, get out!" The North County Times reports that one of the conservators responding to this passionate intervention by shaking his head and quietly muttering, "We would like to, believe me."

British royal visit to boost California tourism (AFP)

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Britain's Prince William and his new bride Catherine are due in California next month, for a trip the cash-strapped US state hopes will give a royal boost to its tourist industry.

While travel chiefs hope to showcase the Golden State's attractions for visitors, speculation is intense over exactly where the newlyweds will go and who they will see during the July 8-10 trip.

Meeting Hollywood stars, enjoying the beach at Malibu, dinner with Elton John or the Beckhams -- who may have some fresh baby tips for them -- nothing can be ruled out for the three-day trip, due after a seven-city tour of Canada.

"No matter where they venture in California, the royal visit will create a global postcard for the Golden State this summer," said Caroline Beteta, head of the California Travel and Tourism Commission.

"Certainly at a time when international travel is leading the rebound in the industry, it's a pivotal time for California to be on the world stage with a such a highly-publicized visit by the royal newlyweds," she told AFP.

The couple have already narrowed down the options, saying last week they plan to visit "Los Angeles and surrounding areas" on the trip, the first to the United States by Catherine, who married the man second in line to the British throne April 29.

That will have disappointed some of California's top tourism spots further north, including Yosemite and Redwood national parks, San Francisco or Death Valley on the other side of the Sierra Nevada.

But it still leaves open a swathe of possibilities centered on LA, home to an enormous British community as well as the center of the US movie industry, and playground to its Tinseltown stars.

"Their lives have already been made into a movie, so a stay in Hollywood seems natural," said celebrity bible People magazine, referring to a television film released to coincide with their wedding.

A meeting with David and Victoria Beckham -- guests at the wedding who live with their children in a Beverly Hills mansion -- is seen as among the most likely stops.

In theory, they could even catch the British soccer megastar in action when his team LA Galaxy plays on July 9 -- although that could be torpedoed by the birth of the Beckhams' fourth baby, due in July: who knows, the royal couple could be among the first to welcome the newborn.

Elton John, a close friend of William's mother Princess Diana, also has a place here, although he too has a baby to look after since he and partner David Furnish announced Zachary's birth by a surrogate mother in December.

Then again, they might prefer to hang out in Santa Monica, home to a huge British population who have long flocked to the sea-front community and its lively pier, end of the world-famous Route 66.

"We are very excited to have the royals coming to California, and would very much welcome a visit from them," said Lisa Powers, manager of Ye Olde King's Head pub, steps from the pier and beach.

"A lot of our customers are anticipating that they will show up for a pint of British beer and some fish and chips -- we would of course welcome them with open arms."

It will not be the first British royal trip to California: William's grandmother Queen Elizabeth II visited in 1983, stopping in LA, San Diego, Palm Springs and San Francisco.

Princess Diana was a hit when she came in the 1980s, while father Prince Charles and his second wife Camilla visited the San Francisco Bay area in 2005.

The trip comes as California, the most populous US state whose economy would make it the eighth largest economy in the world if it were a country, struggles to recover from the global recession.

But tourism chiefs say the travel sector is leading the recovery.

"Travel no doubt took a hit in 2009 when the global economy took a major downturn and people were forced to make tough spending choices. The good news now is that travel is on the rebound," said Beteta.

"Leisure travel from all of California's top international markets, with the exception of Japan, are forecasted to experience growth into 2015," she added.

And she said: "California is already a premier travel destination for visitors worldwide. The royal visit will not only cement that status but spur new demand for people to come and visit California."

Besides David and Victoria Beckham the famed director of "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" is getting assistance from Hollywood executive producer, Steve Tisch. He was the executive producer on a couple of Ritchie's films. Tisch also co-owns the NFL's New York Giants. Now Tisch has the good fortune to host a lavish dinner party for the royal couple who is taking Hollywood by storm. Anyone who is anybody is trying to get an invitation.

Wills, Guy Ritchie and Company

Prince William met Guy Ritchie through his good friend, William Duckworth Chad, who is a real estate agent. Guy Ritchie was in the market for a home during his marriage to the iconic pop star, Madonna. After their introduction Wills became friends with Guy Ritchie. He was even invited to Ritchie's Ashcombe House in Somerset. Eventually Guy Ritchie was later invited to the royal wedding. Steve Tisch had been executive producer on the films Guy Ritchie directed "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" and "Snatch."

Steve Tisch's Lavish Party

Steve Tisch has been executive producer for a number of other Hollywood blockbuster films such as "Risky Business" that made Tom Cruise a star. "Forrest Gump" was another huge film for Tisch that was not only a box office success, but won Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Now his latest production will be a dinner party for 30 guests to welcome William, Duke of Cambridge and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, for their first official visit to Hollywood at his home. One of the reasons William and Kate are visiting Hollywood is to promote the success of the British film industry due in part to "The King's Speech." The royal family was very happy with its portrayal.

A-List of Celebrities to Attend

Some of the guests who will be invited to Steve Tisch's opulent home in July are other film studio moguls and A-List actors. A few lucky celebrities, in addition to Guy Ritchie, on the list include Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and John Travolta. There are British television celebrities who have become international stars in their own right that may or may not be there, due to filming schedules, are Simon Cowell and Cheryl Cole of "X-Factor USA." The only other royal to be embraced by Hollywood was William's mother, Princess Diana. Now there's going to be new royals in Tinseltown.

California court rejects Phil Spector appeal (AP)

LOS ANGELES – A California appeals court rejected music producer Phil Spector's bid to overturn his murder conviction on Monday, saying it was permissible for prosecutors to call a parade of women who said Spector had threatened them with guns in the past.

A three-member panel of the state 2nd District Court of Appeal affirmed Spector's conviction in a strongly worded, 81-page decision rejecting a number of claims made by defense attorney Dennis Riordan.

The judges also dismissed the contention that actress Lana Clarkson was despondent and might have killed herself with a gun at Spector's home. In making that ruling, the panel pointed to evidence from her mother that suggested Clarkson was hopeful about the future.

The panel also concluded the trial court did not abuse its discretion by admitting evidence to prove "Clarkson did not die by her own hand."

In addition, the judges found there was neither judicial nor prosecutorial misconduct at the trial, and that the testimony of five women who claimed Spector threatened them with guns was properly admitted, even though some of the incidents dated back 30 years.

Spector was never charged in those instances. Still, the judges said the testimony showed a pattern of gun-related behavior.

Spector's lawyer said the women's testimony was inflammatory.

Riordan also issued a statement later in the day saying the appellate decision "does not begin to adequately address the prosecution's remarkable assault on constitutional rights to a neutral judge and to cross-examine all adverse witnesses."

Riordan said the same was true of the ruling on evidentiary questions.

He said that he would seek a re-hearing before the court of appeal and if necessary will petition for review by the California Supreme Court.

On another topic, the judicial panel approved a general inference by a witness that Spector was a misogynist who expressed hatred of women and said he wanted to blow their heads off.

Spector was convicted two years ago of shooting the actress to death at his Alhambra mansion in 2003. He's serving 19 years to life in prison on a second-degree murder conviction. His first trial ended in a hung jury; the second in conviction.

The opinion, written by appellate Justice Joan Dempsey Klein and concurred with by Justices Patti Kitchings and Richard D. Aldrich, validated the actions of Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler in every instance challenged by the defense.

Riordan insisted that Judge Fidler erred when he allowed prosecutors to show jurors a videotape from a hearing held outside the presence of Spector and the jury.

On the tape, Fidler was seen interpreting the testimony of a key forensic witness about the position of blood spatter on Clarkson's body. Riordan said the judge had taken on the role of a witness. The appeals court disagreed.

"A trial court's power, indeed its responsibility, to clarify testimony is well-settled in California," the decision said.

The justices also rejected the claim that prosecutors crossed a line in closing arguments when they accused defense experts of testifying a certain way because they were paid a lot of money.

The appeals court said, "Harsh and colorful attacks on the credibility of opposing witness are permissible."

Throughout the decision, the panel returned repeatedly to Spector's statement to a chauffeur on the night of Clarkson's death that, "I think I killed somebody."
