Move Over, Hollywood

The "Hunger Games" was partially filmed in Georgia.

ATLANTA — A few years ago, Georgia was locked in a bidding war with North Carolina over the Disney movie, "The Last Song," starring Miley Cyrus.

Both states wanted the movie to film in their state, and North Carolina was close to sealing the deal with an attractive tax incentive package. But Georgia snapped up the production, largely because it had recently expanded its own tax credit for films.

The state hasn't looked back since. Not only are TV shows like "The Walking Dead" and films like "The Hunger Games" sequel filmed in Georgia, but tens of millions of dollars are being invested to build up critical infrastructure. No fewer than five major studio developments or expansions have been announced in recent months with the goal of luring big-budget blockbusters.

"It really is about the whole package," said Lee Thomas, director of the Georgia Film, Music & Digital Entertainment Office. "They can do everything here now."

Last fiscal year, productions filmed in Georgia generated an estimated $3.1 billion in economic activity, a 29 percent increase from the year before, according to state estimates. And Thomas said that will only increase with the studio projects in the works that will add large soundstages and back lots to lure big productions, such as "Iron Man 3," which Georgia wasn't able to accommodate. The state didn't have a studio that fit the requirements of the film's production company.

Of the studio projects in the works, one being planned in Fayette County, a short drive south of Atlanta, could be a game changer. British film studio Pinewood Shepperton PLC, home to the James Bond franchise, has reportedly been in talks with a group of investors to manage and operate the facility. It would be Pinewood's first production facility in the U.S. Recent films shot at Pinewood Studios, outside London, include the coming Angelina Jolie film, "Maleficent" and "Jack Ryan," directed by Sir Kenneth Branagh.

The project, once finalized, would underscore how much Georgia has become a film destination and be another sign that California continues to struggle with runaway production.

A survey last year found that California lost $3 billion in wages from 2004 to 2011 because of film and TV production moving to other states and countries, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times. Half the wages went to states such as Georgia, North Carolina and Louisiana that offer tax incentives and rebates to the industry.

Representatives of Pinewood declined comment on the plan, and the head of Fayette County's development agency would say only that discussions continue between the company and a group of Georgia-based investors on the state-of-the-art studio complex, which would sit on 288 acres and include at least five soundstages.

"It takes the state to a whole new level," said Matt Forshee, president of the Fayette County Development Authority, who has been closely involved in the project. "When you look at the films that have filmed in Georgia, for the most part, they have been smaller budget films, in the range of $20-25 million. This allows us to open up to larger budget productions, which means more expenditures occurring within the state, which becomes a bigger return on the investment on the state level for the tax credits."

Georgia has come a long way since the 1939 Civil War epic "Gone With The Wind," arguably the most famous movie about the state, was filmed in California. Three decades later, the 1971 Burt Reynolds movie "Deliverance" helped put Georgia on the map as a shooting location. The state created a film commission, and Reynolds returned to the state to shoot hits such as "Smokey and the Bandit" and "The Longest Yard."

Now, Atlanta truly has the feel of Hollywood South. In recent years, the state has been a shooting location for films such as Clint Eastwood's "Trouble With the Curve," the new Jackie Robinson biopic "42" with Harrison Ford, Denzel Washington's Oscar-nominated turn as an alcoholic pilot in "Flight," the Katherine Heigl rom-com "Life as We Know It," the current Reese Witherspoon project "The Good Lie," and comedies such as 2011's "Hall Pass" and the coming "Anchorman: The Legend Continues" starring Will Ferrell.

While studio developers building soundstages are not eligible for Georgia's tax credit program, the production companies making films are. Georgia provides a 20 percent tax credit for companies that spend $500,000 or more on production and post-production in the state, either in a single production or on multiple projects.

Georgia also grants an additional 10 percent tax credit if the finished project includes a state promotional logo. Further, if a company has little or no Georgia tax liability, it can transfer or sell its tax credits.

"The industry follows the dollar," Forshee said. "They are going to go where they can do the best product for the cheapest cost. This tax credit has made Georgia a viable and lucrative place to make films."

The economic benefits have been debated in Georgia, although the state has remained committed to the film incentives. Meanwhile, lawmakers in North Carolina are debating a plan that would place certain limitations on the state's program, with supporters of the effort saying there's no evidence the $30 million in tax breaks in 2011 matches the job growth cited by the industry. In comparison, Georgia handed out $140.6 million in tax credits in 2010.

Gov. Nathan Deal said it's the combination of the tax credits and Georgia's diverse landscape – from the mountains to the coast – that has made the state so attractive to filmmakers.

"It is an affirmation of several things, some of which is just the natural beauty of our state," Deal said in a recent interview. "You are seeing ample evidence that the tax credits for the movie and film industry are definitely paying the dividends that we anticipated."

There are a number of ripple effects. The films bring jobs, and the state already has an estimated 5,000 union and non-union professionals associated with the film industry along with more than 1,000 production suppliers and support companies. Major components of the proposed studio projects also include educational programs aimed at training the next generation of industry employees.

This week, Atlanta-based Jacoby Development announced plans to build an estimated $1 billion multiuse project north of downtown Atlanta that will include 12 soundstages as well as production offices and an arts and media school.

Jim Jacoby, chairman of The Jacoby Group, said he expected to have financing lined up quickly and was in Hollywood this week to pitch the project.

"The times are ripe because the demand is there right now. We feel like we have a facility that we can get to market quickly," Jacoby said.

The studio project will be located on 100 acres in Gwinnett County just north of the city, where with an existing 500,000-square-foot building can be remade into 12 soundstages. Plans call for construction to begin by the end of the year.

"The facility that Jacoby is building will be designed to Hollywood standards and will fill quickly," said Gary Bastien, whose architectural firm will be involved in the studio design. Bastien has designed various TV and movie projects for major studios in Southern California.

Other projects include a planned expansion of Tyler Perry's sprawling studio complex that already includes five soundstages, a $100 million project east of the city in Newton County and a $90 million studio planned in Effingham County near Savannah.

The one in Newton County is in the early stages, but Covington-based Triple Horse says it plans a 160-acre studio with multiple soundstages, post-production facilities and a back lot. The one in Effingham County is backed by Medient Studios, which began in India and has expanded with offices in Hollywood and London. Medient's project includes a $90 million studio and entertainment complex with the goal of also becoming a major tourist destination.

Thomas, who heads the state's entertainment office, said another side benefit has been Georgia's burgeoning film tourism industry, with fans planning vacations around visits to film locations. Much of that has centered on the town of Senoia, where AMC's "The Walking Dead" is filmed, with plans to promote Georgia locations in connection with the coming release of the "Hunger Games" sequel. The state also has launched a website, ComeTourGeorgia.com, that lists movie tours and travel tips, pitching an opportunity to "walk in the footsteps of your favorite actors and musicians."

Said Thomas: "We have all the pieces of the puzzle here."

Shakira receives star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Singer Shakira became the first Colombian artist to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Tuesday, joining Latin stars Ricky Martin and Christina Aguilera on the famed street.

"I would like to dedicate this to the Latin community in the U.S., a community that restlessly works and dreams and dreams and works everyday to make this a better country," said the singer to fans gathered on the iconic Hollywood Blvd. sidewalk to see the singer unveil her star.

Shakira, 34, rose to fame in Latin America in the 1990s with her album "Pies Descalzos" and singles such as "Donde Estas Corazon" and "Estoy Aqui." Her second official album, "Donde Estan Los Ladrones?" garnered international success with singles such as "No Creo" and the Arab-inspired "Ojos Asi."

The Latin singer then produced an English crossover album, "Laundry Service," following in the footsteps of bilingual artists like Enrique Iglesias and Martin, who also recorded in Spanish and English.

Her single "Whenever, Wherever," topped charts in many European counties and the Spanish version of the single won a Latin Grammy award.

"When I was seven years-old, I came to Los Angeles for the first time and I passed by the Walk of Fame with my mother," reminisced Shakira. "I remember that my mom told me, 'Shaki, one day you are going to have your name on this place.'"

The singer has won two Grammys and was nominated for her collaborations with Beyonce on the single "Beautiful Liar" and Wyclef Jean on "Hips Don't Lie."

Shakira's latest album, "Sale el Sol" is nominated at the upcoming 2011 Latin Grammy Awards in Las Vegas on November 10.

Highbrow trumps Hollywood at Venice film festival (Reuters)

By Mike Collett-White and Silvia Aloisi Mike Collett-white And Silvia Aloisi – Sun Sep 11, 12:21 pm ET

VENICE, Italy (Reuters) – Highbrow trumped Hollywood at the Venice film festival this year, with Russian director Alexander Sokurov's demanding German-language "Faust" taking top prize and Roman Polanski and George Clooney overlooked.

Most prizes at Saturday's closing ceremony went to less-than-familiar names and faces, with the exception of rising Irish star Michael Fassbender's best actor award for "Shame."

The Silver Lion for best director was awarded to China's Shangjun Cai for his gritty "People Mountain People Sea," best actress went to Hong Kong's Deanie Ip and the jury prize went to Italian immigration drama "Terraferma."

Surprisingly overlooked was Roman Polanski's "Carnage," a comedy of manners featuring a stellar cast of Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly.

Based on a play and set in real time in a single apartment, Carnage is a stinging critique of middle class mores, but also has plenty of humor including Winslet's memorable projectile vomit scene.

Polanski was not able to travel to Venice to present the movie, given the threat of extradition to the United States where he is still wanted for sentencing in a 1977 sex crime case.

"Many feel that jury head Darren Aronofsky and his compatriot Todd Haynes, both Americans, lacked the courage to give the victory to a colleague who is not liked in the U.S." said a commentary in the La Stampa newspaper.

While Venice is not a platform for blockbusters, it has proved an effective launchpad for U.S. Oscar contenders like Ang Lee's "Brokeback Mountain" and Aronofsky's own "Black Swan" and "The Wrestler."

Festival director Marco Mueller succeeded in attracting a string of A-listers to the red carpet this year after a low-key 2010, although all were bypassed when it came to the prizes.

Among the overlooked contenders was Clooney's political thriller "The Ides of March," which was well received and starred Clooney himself as a governor embroiled in scandal during an election race.

La Repubblica newspaper's headline said Clooney and Polanski had been "snubbed."

"Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy," directed by Sweden's Tomas Alfredson, slipped beneath the radar despite rave reviews for its adaptation of John Le Carre's classic Cold War spy novel.

Gary Oldman shines as George Smiley and Colin Firth and John Hurt also appeared in the surprisingly digestible re-telling of a notoriously complex tale.

"Faust" is the fourth and final installment in Sokurov's series on corrupting power, and won praise for conjuring up a 19th century world of squalor, stench and chaos in which Faust and a mad-cap Mephistopheles play out their destinies.

Some viewers found the dialogue-heavy, German language picture that lasts well over two hours tough going.

"Taking highbrow to the edge of slapstick, Sokurov's idiosyncratic adaptation of ... Faust will intrigue some and turn off others," said Hollywood Reporter critic Deborah Young.

Faust is a less obvious fit in the series, which started in 1999 with "Moloch," about Adolf Hitler, and took in Vladimir Lenin in "Taurus" and Emperor Hirohito in "The Sun."

Outside the main competition, singer Madonna presented her second feature film as director, "W.E.," about a modern-day woman who becomes obsessed with Wallis Simpson and her love for King Edward VIII.

And Steven Soderbergh assembled an all-star cast for "Contagion," a story about the spread of disease and fear around the world featuring Gwyneth Paltrow, Marion Cotillard, Jude Law, Matt Damon and Winslet.

Ed O'Neill says he'll get Hollywood star Aug. 30 (AP)

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – "Modern Family" star Ed O'Neill tells his hometown newspaper that he'll get his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at the end of the month.

O'Neill tells the Youngstown, Ohio, newspaper The Vindicator ( http://bit.ly/onIPUb) that he'll be honored Aug. 30. Induction speeches will be given by Sofia Vergara, who plays his wife on the ABC hit, and Katey Sagal, who played his wife on Fox's "Married With Children" in the 1980s and `90s.

A Walk of Fame spokeswoman could not confirm the date.

The 65-year-old O'Neill says he almost turned down the star. He says, "It's bizarre — names on a sidewalk. People can spit on it," but his 11-year-old daughter persuaded him to accept.

He says that, after the initial shock, he realizes the honor is "something to be proud of."

Dazzled cops arrest Clark Gable in Hollywood (AFP)

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Clark Gable, a grandson of the late movie legend, was arrested in Hollywood for allegedly pointing a laser device at a police helicopter.

The 22-year-old was detained with a friend after a patrolling police pilot reported a "bright green laser light" had illuminated his cockpit over Sunset Boulevard.

"Suddenly the cockpit was illuminated with green light, a laser light, the pilot took evasive action," Gus Villanueva of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD)'s Hollywood station told the local KCAL9 television station.

Officers on the ground traced the source of the light to a car, inside which were Clark James Gable and a friend, Maximilian Anderson, 23. They were booked for a felony and held on $250,000 bail.

Gable was released later in the day, and is due to appear in court on August 26. "It was a misunderstanding, you know, people make mistakes and you learn from them," Gable told KCAL9.

He said the laser "was just a gift that I got and people make mistakes and that's the bottom line.

"I'm going to learn from it and hopefully others will."

His grandfather was most famous as Rhett Butler in 1939's "Gone for the Wind," which earned him an Oscar nomination, five years after he won an Academy Award for his role in "It Happened One Night."

Keep tabs on activities at the Hollywood Bowl for Android (Appolicious)

APPOLICIOUS ADVISOR RATING:

5 of 5 bars PRICE: FreeTASTY: Keep tabs on what's happening at the Hollywood Bowl all summer long.BUMMER: There's nothing negative to be said about this app.COOL: This is a beautifully designed application.

If you live in Los Angeles, you know that no other experience is like being at the Hollywood Bowl in the summertime. The venue's own app for Android allows you to keep up on everything related to the Hollywood Bowl.

The first thing you'll notice upon launch of the app is its very colorful, scrolling day-by-day calendar. Each date is marked so you can see who will be performing within the coming weeks. If you see something of interest, just click on any day to read a description and learn the time the event will begin. Then, you can either buy the ticket or add the concert to a favorites list in order to receive reminders and announcements.

The Hollywood Bowl application also explains how to get to the venue from wherever you are, and where all accommodations are once you arrive: bathrooms, concession stands, picnic areas and even your seats.

The app has it's own social networking element, too. One section of the app is reserved as a fan photo gallery to which users can browse pictures from other users and submit their own photos.

The app runs smoothly and loads quickly, so you won't have to wait very long to find the information you need.

Other than the fact that the app is well-made and informative, I'd have to say that the Hollywood Bowl app's greatest feature is its design. This app is a calendar and a directory, guides that usually come in boring black and white, but this menu glows rainbow. It's actually one of the more creative uses of color I've seen in an application.

Pretty colors aside, this app is also neatly labeled and organized, so most users won't have any trouble finding their way around.

With so many tours coming to the Bowl this summer, this is exactly the app you need to stay in the loop and get the most out of your experience.

Hollywood gloats, silently, over News Corp scandal (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – British actors Hugh Grant and Steve Coogan may be publicly cheering the woes of Rupert Murdoch's media empire in a newspaper hacking scandal, but in Hollywood any gloating is largely taking place behind closed doors.

Since few American stars appear to have been targeted by the hacking into private phones at the shuttered British tabloid News of the World, the U.S. entertainment industry is watching from afar -- more spectator, than participant.

"I think the reaction (in Hollywood) has been very low key. Most people are watching the news unfold in London and wondering what will be the ripple effect on the various News Corp divisions here. The main focus is not the entertainment properties, but the news properties," said Sharon Waxman, editor in chief of industry website The Wrap.

In Los Angeles, home to Murdoch's Fox Television network and 20th Century Fox film studio, the focus is more on Thursday's nominations for the 2011 Emmys -- the highest honors in the TV industry -- and movie box offices, in particular this week's release of Warner Bros' newest "Harry Potter" movie.

"I think people are enjoying watching this guy roast but I don't think it's having any material impact. I think it is a case of schadenfreude," one senior executive at a rival Hollywood studio, who did not wish to be named, told Reuters.

In Britain, Grant and Coogan -- both repeated targets of the tabloid press -- greeted the troubles at the News of the World with glee.

"The News of the World is ... a misogynistic, xenophobic, single parent-hating, asylum seeker-hating newspaper and it's gone to the wall and I'm delighted," comic actor Coogan said on a BBC chat show last week.

"A WATERSHED MOMENT"

Grant, star of "Four Weddings and A Funeral", called the closure of the tabloid on Sunday a "watershed moment when, finally, the public starts to see ... just how low and how disgusting this particular newspaper's methods were."

Bryce Nelson, professor of journalism at the University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communication, attributed the reluctance to speak out in Hollywood to the power of Fox "in movies and television and in running tabloids that can get sensational material on people in the entertainment fields."

Said another industry source; "Murdoch touches everybody in some way, so nobody is standing up" to speak publicly.

Among those brave enough to put their heads above the parapet is comedian Jon Stewart, whose satirical TV program "The Daily Show" has waged a long war of words with conservative leaning Fox News cable television.

In a swift recap on Monday of allegations that News of the World employees hacked the voicemail of an abducted British teenager, Stewart commented: "I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit."

And in what was dubbed a "schadenfreudegasm," the "Daily Show" wryly hailed Grant -- remembered for his humiliating 1995 arrest with a Hollywood prostitute -- as one of the heroes of the tabloid's downfall.

On a more serious note, former Washington Post correspondent Carl Bernstein asked whether Murdoch was facing his own Watergate.

"The circumstances of the alleged lawbreaking within News Corp suggest more than a passing resemblance to Richard Nixon presiding over a criminal conspiracy in which he insulated himself from specific knowledge of numerous criminal acts," Bernstein wrote in an article for Newsweek.

Hollywood royalty meets real British royalty (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Quoting from "The King's Speech," the Oscar-winning movie about his great-grandfather, Prince William projected his royal voice on Saturday to woo the Hollywood power crowd in a bid with wife Kate to promote young British talent.

He in black tie, she in a pleated lavender Alexander McQueen gown, the young newlyweds set a tone of classic elegance for the most high-profile event in their three-day visit to the United States.

Hollywood royalty -- from actors Tom Hanks, Nicole Kidman, and Barbra Streisand to studio mogul Harvey Weinstein -- turned out for the couple of the moment at the $25,000 a table gala organized by British Academy for Film and Television (BAFTA), of which William is president.

"I would like to thank Colin Firth for my perfect opening line -- I have a voice," William joked with the crowd, quoting one of the most famous lines in the 2010 movie about King George VI, the father of Queen Elizabeth who overcame a stammer.

Alas, Oscar winner Firth was not there nor were many established British actors. William and BAFTA instead wanted to introduce 42 emerging British actors, producers, writers and videogame designers to the movers and shakers of the entertainment capital of the world.

"Please give them the opportunities that you have always extended to some of the brightest and best that Britain has to offer," William told the gathering at the Belasco, a restored theater in downtown Los Angeles.

"When American and British creative talent gets together, magic happens. Let's continue the winning formula."

British actor Stephen Fry praised the idea to promote Brits in Hollywood while fascination with the royal couple was at its height following their April wedding.

"Royalty creates a glamour, prestige and luster that trumps anything Hollywood can produce," Fry said.

SKID ROW LIES AHEAD

That impact was likely what the British royal family sought in the young couple's first official trip overseas, first to Canada and then to California.

And as images go, the second day in sunny Southern California for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge was just about picture perfect.

On a green and glamorous Santa Barbara polo field, William and Kate charmed the deep-pocketed polo set and raised millions of dollars for charity. To top it off, William made good on his promise to win the charity polo match and scored four goals for his team, earning a pair of kisses from Kate.

While polo may be an elite sport, William and Kate have tried to make their visit to California anything but stuffy. On their final day Sunday, they will visit a children's art center in the middle of Los Angeles' Skid Row and meet military veterans and their families.

Despite the high wattage celebrity turnout of Saturday night, the duke and duchess have tried to keep the celebrity quotient in check, mindful of how excess might not play well in a Britain beset by austerity measures.

The California visit is more about business than pleasure, with most activities centered on charity and trade promotion. Upon arrival Friday, they talked technology investment with a room full of innovators and financiers.

While the royal couple won't have contact with large crowds like they did in Canada, they did try to talk to ordinary Angelenos when they got the chance. At the end of the red carpet at the Belasco, they made a beeline to shake hands with a smattering of fans who'd been allowed in to see them up close.

Royal couple promote British talent in Hollywood (AFP)

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Prince William and his new wife Catherine used their star power to promote British acting talent, at a glittering dinner with Hollywood A-listers on the last night of a 12-day north American tour.

Preparing to fly home Sunday after visiting Canada and California -- their first overseas trip since marrying in April -- the future British king paid tribute to the "magic" of Anglo-American creative dynamism.

William, president of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), urged guests including Tom Hanks and Nicole Kidman to give a chance to 42 up-and-coming "Brits to watch" invited to mingle with the Hollywood stars.

"Please give them the opportunities you have always extended to some of the brightest and best that Britain has to offer. When American and British creative talent gets together, magic happens," he said Saturday night.

"Let?s continue the winning formula," added William, who with his wife received a Beatles-like reception in Canada last week, and who are hugely popular with Americans fascinated by the British royal family.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were given the full red carpet treatment in Los Angeles -- and generated more excitement than A listers including Tom Hanks and Nicole Kidman attending the star-studded event.

Hundreds of fans gathered outside the Belasco Theater in downtown LA, cheering as the usual celebrities arrived for the red carpet entry -- but screaming the place down when William and Catherine arrived.

"They're not just actors, their position is so much greater," said LA local Sarah Pijuan, 28, after meeting the couple who for the first time here stopped to talk to fans -- a contact with the public which they had lots of in Canada.

Earlier in the day they had wowed the crowds at a charity polo match in Santa Barbara, an hour north of Los Angeles up the Pacific coast -- especially after the prince's team won the afternoon's tournament.

Tickets for the one-off event went for $400 dollars -- $4,000 for the privilege of lunching with the royal couple before the on-field action.

The 29-year-old future king drew whoops of approval when he took the field under a blazing West Coast sun at the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club, as Catherine watched admiringly from the stands.

"They're great role models for young people, they're elegant and great ambassadors for their country," said Santa Barbara resident Victoria Hines, 65, dressed up for the exclusive event an hour north of Los Angeles.

Catherine's clothes have also impressed -- she reportedly brought 40 outfits for the 12-day trip. On Saturday she wore a silver and marble grey dress by Jenny Packham to the polo, and a full-length light blue number in the evening.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge -- as they have been since marrying in London in April -- arrived in Los Angeles on Friday for the weekend trip following a nine-day tour of Canada.

Officially, the Californian mini-tour will aim to "contribute to deepening and strengthening the multi-layered links between the United States and the United Kingdom," according to a British official briefing.

Unofficially, all eyes have been on who they meet -- after David Beckham and British writer-broadcaster Stephen Fry on Friday, Saturday's celebrity crop included Jennifer Lopez, Barbara Streisand and Jack Black.

On Sunday, they visit "Skid Row" in downtown to visit the Inner-City Arts school, a non-profit academy that provides free classes in visual and performing arts to children from poor neighborhoods.

Later Sunday they attend a job fair for military veterans at Sony Studios in Culver City, before leaving Los Angeles to return to the United Kingdom after their succesful north American trip.

Hollywood glamour and sun for British royal couple (AFP)

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Britain's Prince William will be the star of the show at a charity polo match Saturday, on the second day of a weekend trip to California with his new wife Catherine.

The royal couple, in the western US state for three days after a nine-day tour of Canada, will also use their star power to promote British actors and filmmakers in Hollywood.

After arriving in Los Angeles from Calgary on Friday, they spent the night at the residence the British consul-general in Los Angeles, who also hosted a reception for them on their first evening in town.

On Saturday they will travel an hour up the Pacific coast to the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club, for a charity match in aid of the American Friends of The Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry.

The 29-year-old prince, second in line to the British throne after his father Prince Charles, will demonstrate his horsemanship while Catherine will present the prize to the winning players.

Tickets for the one-off event have been fetching thousands of dollars, and spectators will certainly hope to get their money's worth, whether or not William wins -- or takes a tumble.

But the prince, who follows in his father's and grandfather's footsteps in playing polo, may have to watch out for a more aggressive American approach to a sport perceived as an upper class in Britain.

"There's huge differences," said Ebe Sievwright, a player and coach with the California Polo Club who is also a British-born actor who says he has played with William.

"Polo in England is very Argentine influenced, and in America there is a great history of cowboys and riding from their own history out in the Wild West," he told CNN.

"It will be interesting for William out in Santa Barbara to play in a game where it's really flowing like a pinball game," he added.

Whatever the outcome on the polo field, the couple will have to pick themselves up Saturday evening for a black-tie dinner hosted by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) in downtown Los Angeles.

William is BAFTA's president, and the aim of the event will be to give up-and-coming British actors a chance to meet Hollywood movers and shakers.

Officially, the Californian mini-tour will aim to "contribute to deepening and strengthening the multi-layered links between the United States and the United Kingdom," according to a British official briefing.

Unofficially, all eyes are on who they will meet during the barely 48-hour stay in California.

Britain is well represented here, and there has been much speculation that they could squeeze in meetings with David and Victoria Beckham -- guests at their April wedding -- or Elton John, a close friend of William's mother Diana.

On Sunday, they will visit "Skid Row" in downtown to visit the Inner-City Arts school, a nonprofit academy that provides free classes in visual and performing arts to children from poor neighborhoods.

Later Sunday they will attend a job fair for military veterans at Sony Studios in Culver City, before leaving Los Angeles to return to the United Kingdom after their 12-day north American trip.

Young Brits, Hollywood legends to meet Will and Kate (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – "Larry Crowne" actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw and "Game of Thrones" actor Harry Lloyd will be among the up-and-coming British talent meeting Prince William and his new wife Kate Middleton at a black-tie gala in Los Angeles next week.

But the royal couple also will get a chance to chat with Hollywood A-list stars at the event, seen as the highlight of their three-day visit to southern California, organizers said on Friday.

About 250 people, including senior executives at Hollywood's major movie studios, are expected at the sold-out event which is intended to promote young British talent in film, television and videogames.

But one source involved in organizing the July 9 evening told Reuters that the guests would also include "a very nice celebrity list, from hot young things to legends".

The celebrity names are not expected to be released in advance.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) on Friday announced the names of the 42 "Brits to watch" who will take part. They include "Flight of the Conchords" writer and director James Bobin; Jessica Brown Findlay, who appeared in the period TV drama "Downton Abbey"; Juno Temple who played a young teen in "Atonement"; and Owain Yeoman, who has appeared in the TV crime series "The Mentalist".

Mbatha-Raw has a character role in the Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts romantic comedy "Larry Crowne", which opened in the United States on Friday. She also starred in last year's short-lived U.S. TV series "Undercovers".

The rising British stars were selected by a BAFTA panel and will join industry executives at their tables for dinner, as well as meeting William and Kate, formally known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Prince William is the president of BAFTA.

The Duke and Duchess, who are currently visiting Canada, arrive in Los Angeles on July 8.

Maguire: No wrongdoing in Hollywood poker matches (AP)

LOS ANGELES – Tobey Maguire didn't just win more than $300,000 during poker matches against a man convicted of running a Ponzi scheme, the actor's attorney notes in court filings that he also lost $168,500 to the convicted con man.

Maguire's attorney denied the actor did anything wrong by playing in the Texas Hold 'Em matches held at upscale Beverly Hills hotels and private residences and shouldn't be required to turn over any of his winnings to Ponzi investors, court filings released Thursday state. But attorney Robert Barta argues that if a bankruptcy court rules that the "Spider-Man" star has to turn over any of his winnings, he should be credited for the nearly $170,000 he lost to Bradley Ruderman.

The actor and 21 others, including several celebrities, were sued in March by a bankruptcy trustee hoping to recoup more than $4 million in Ruderman's gambling losses during the poker games, which the lawsuits claim were unlicensed. The winners, including Maguire and actor-director Nick Cassavetes, have no right to keep their winnings, the trustee's lawsuits claim.

"It's my belief that the games under California law were illegal because they were being hosted for money," trustee Howard Ehrenberg said in an interview last week.

Maguire's response denies that they were "controlled games" or that a woman accused of coordinating the tournaments was also responsible for making sure winners were paid.

Cassavetes' attorney has also denied wrongdoing. Attorney Ronald Richards said last week he is hoping to either resolve the case for a lesser amount than the $73,000 that "The Notebook" director won at a 2007 game, or he will fight the case.

Ruderman paid many of his losses during the games with checks, which allowed Ehrenberg to trace the payments and attempt to seize them to repay the Ponzi investors.

Ruderman was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison earlier this year after pleading guilty to two counts of wire fraud, two counts of investment adviser fraud and willful failure to file taxes.

Maguire acknowledges he received the payments from Ruderman, but denied there was a regular roster of poker players including "wealthy celebrities, entrepreneurs, attorneys and businessmen."

Ehrenberg said he thought he hoped to resolve several of the cases without them going to trial.

Madrid gets own version of Hollywood Walk of Fame (AFP)

MADRID (AFP) – Penelope Cruz, Pedro Almodovar and Antonio Banderas were among 25 Spanish film stars honoured with a sidewalk plaque on Madrid's new Walk of Fame, which was inaugurated Monday.

The granite, marble and steel plaques feature a large star and the celebrity's name, like the ones on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which has become one of Los Angeles' top tourist draws since it opened in 1960.

Spain's film academy at first honoured 25 personalities -- 16 actors and nine directors -- to mark its 25th anniversary but plans to add one or two plaques each year to the central Madrid street that is home to several cinemas.

"I am very grateful and honoured to receive this star," Banderas said in a message sent to the film academy.

Cruz's husband Javier Bardem, whose films include "No Country for Old Men", and "Agora" director Alejandro Amenabar were among the other Spanish film stars honoured.

In April Cruz received the 2,436th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, becoming the first Spanish actress to receive the honour.

The actress joined other Spanish personalities, including Banderas, singer Julio Iglesias and tenor Placido Domingo, to be honoured with a star on what is often billed as the world's most famous sidewalk.

Spain's film industry is amongst the 10 largest in the world in terms of production levels.

Spanish films earned 170.3 million euros from ticket sales last year, just over half of the amount, 53 percent, outside of Spain, according to the country's main film producers' association, Fapae.

Winslet, Lopez nominated for Hollywood stars (AFP)

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Kate Winslet and Jennifer Lopez are among nominees announced Tuesday to get their star on Hollywood's storied Walk of Fame next year.

Jennifer Aniston and Scarlett Johansson can also get their names on the Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk in 2012, while actors Richard Burton and Malcolm McDowell, along with soul legend Barry White, will get posthumous stars.

"The committee has selected a fabulous slate of stars to add sparkle and luster to the Hollywood Walk of Fame over the next year," said John Pavlik, chairman of the Hollywood Walk of Fame Selection Committee.

"Simpsons" creator Matt Groening was also nominated, along with John Lasseter and Sumner Redstone from the film world, and musicians Boyz II Men and Ann and Nancy Wilson of the band Heart.

The selection committee is part of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the golden stars on the stretch of Hollywood Boulevard near Grauman's Chinese Theatre and the Kodak Theatre, home to the Oscars.

The nominees were chosen from hundreds of applicants considered at a June 17 meeting of the committee, whose decision was ratified by the Chamber's board of directors.

While the nominations are for 2012, those chosen have up to five years to schedule ceremonies to unveil their stars, after which their selection will expire.

`Spoiled' an entertaining Hollywood commentary (AP)

"Spoiled" (Poppy), by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan: High in the Hollywood Hills, Brooke Berlin is living like a Hilton sister. Her dad, Brick, is a famous movie star, and her big chance to impress him is just a few months away. Everything is going according to plan until she gets the ultimate surprise: Brooke has a half-sister named Molly.

Molly grew up in West Cairo, Ind., where she enjoyed a quiet life and dated the same boy since grade school. Molly learns her father's identity from her dying mother. She decides to move to Los Angeles to join her new family.

It's not an easy transition. Brooke doesn't share anything, especially her father's affection, and she goes straight for Molly's social jugular. Brooke spreads rumors about Molly at school and refuses to acknowledge her existence.

In desperation, Molly befriends Brooke's archenemy, who writes for a popular tabloid. That's when the country girl begins to understand that the only way she's going to survive in Hollywood is by fighting back.

When she realizes that Brooke's attacks are fueled by misguided anger, the teens start to connect. But the road to sisterhood has its casualties, most notably, Molly's hometown boyfriend.

"Spoiled" is the debut young adult novel of Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan, creators of the popular comedic fashion blog gofugyourself.com. They have the right formula for an entertaining tween story, a healthy mix of drama, fashion and intrigue.

The characters are entertaining blends of the Hollywood elite: Brooke is a cross between Reese Witherspoon's charming Elle Woods in "Legally Blonde" and Leighton Meester's ruthless Blair Waldorf in "Gossip Girl." Brick has Brad Pitt's looks and Will Ferrell's endearing naivety.

And the Hollywood commentary is classic. Brick refuses to let Lady Gaga sing on the soundtrack for his new film because "I don't trust people who don't wear pants."

Cocks and Morgan leave the story open-ended to allow for a few more Molly and Brooke stories. Here's hoping they don't wait too long.

Hollywood hot for music biopics (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) – Biographical films about music icons often go through lengthy development periods.

Changes in directors, writers and stars are common -- witness projects involving the careers of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Miles Davis, Brian Wilson and the Mamas & the Papas that have kicked around for decades.

Here is a look at 12 projects in various stages of development, along with the one ("Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life") that actually has a solid release date.

JAMES BROWN

The latest: A film about the Godfather of Soul was in the works before his death in 2006 with a script that had already been rewritten once. Spike Lee boarded the project within days of Brown's death and Wesley Snipes was fitted for the cape, vest, and conked hair. Two years ago, Lee said Snipes would sing as well. The film has moved to a back burner at Paramount -- perhaps because Snipes is serving time on income tax evasion?

Prognosis: Another "Ray" -- a film with a long road ahead.

JEFF BUCKLEY

The latest: Jake Scott ("Welcome to the Rileys") will direct the untitled biopic, penned by Ryan Jaffe, about the rising star, son of late folk icon Tim Buckley, who drowned in 1997 at age 30. Michelle Sy ("Finding Neverland") and Orian Williams ("Control") are producing; Buckley's mother Mary Guibert is the executive producer. Principal photography is scheduled for the fall and "Twilight" heartthrob Robert Pattinson has been considered for the lead.

Prognosis: Likely to be made; distribution will be another story.

SAM COOKE

The latest: Producer Jody Klein, whose company ABKCO owns the soul singer's recordings and publishing, commissioned the team of Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais ("Across the Universe," "The Commitments") to pen a script. Klein has been taking the finished script to directors for a few months. ABKCO intends to finance the film.

Prognosis: A go project that, with the right star -- there have been rumblings about Anthony Mackie, and Ray Lavender announced a few weeks ago on his Twitter feed that he got the part, but there's no confirmation -- could be an Oscar contender.

BRIAN EPSTEIN

The latest: Executive producer and writer Vivek Tiwary says he has the $25 million needed to make this film about the Beatles' late manager as well as the rights to 6-10 Beatles songs. He has listed "All You Need Is Love," "A Day in the Life" and "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" as already cleared. The script covers Epstein's life from 1961 through 1967, the year of his death.

Prognosis: Beatles music in a movie means Paul, Ringo and the estates have approved it. If true, there should be no problem getting this made.

ARETHA FRANKLIN

The latest: Franklin told USA Today she has secured "financial and creative control" but to date has not provided details. She has gone on talk shows ("The View," "Wendy Williams," "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon") and expressed an interest in having Halle Berry (who passed on the project in January, saying she can't sing) and Patina Miller from the Broadway musical "Sister Act" to play the young Queen of Soul.

Prognosis: As a TV movie it's likely, but creative-control issues lurk.

MARVIN GAYE

The latest: After decades of stops and starts with different stars and directors, Screen Daily reported in February that British documentary filmmaker Julien Temple ("Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten") would tackle the story of Gaye recording his final album, "Midnight Love," in Brussels, as well as his friendship with the Belgian promoter Freddy Cousaert.

Prognosis: As proposed, this is not the biopic fans want to see. It would have to play extremely well at film festivals to get distribution.

SERGE GAINSBOURG

The latest: Released in the U.K. last summer, "Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life" will hit U.S. screens on August 31. Eric Elmosnino stars; Joann Sfar directed and wrote the script. It is the only biopic on a release schedule this year.

Prognosis: A box-office gross of $5 million would be astounding.

PEGGY LEE

The latest: Reese Witherspoon announced in August that she has secured Peggy Lee's life rights and music rights, and had tapped Nora Ephron would write and direct. Witherspoon would produce and, if her schedule allowed, star as the 1950s songstress. Witherspoon has since taken on two other acting-producing jobs.

Prognosis: Witherspoon's announcement came out of the blue and was immediately greeted with skepticism - when would she have time to do this? There have been no follow-up reports since the initial announcement.

BOB MARLEY

The latest: Director Jenny Ash is developing a film based on Marley's year in London, 1977, theoretically circumventing the need for Marley recordings. Greenacre Films is producing.

Prognosis: The Marley estate has declined to give its blessing, making this a very, very tough sell to a distributor. If it gets made without music, it will be a tough sell to a large audience.

QUEEN

The latest: Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon created Queen Films to participate in the movie with GK Films partners Graham King and Tim Headington. Sacha Baron Cohen stars as Freddie Mercury in script from Peter Morgan that is being worked on. The band's involvement, combined with an emphasis on their less-prolific '80s era, will ease access to recordings.

Prognosis: As real a movie as there is. Hollywood Records presumably has a marketing plan in place around its reissue of the group's catalog this year.

TUPAC SHAKUR

The latest: Casting sessions to find an unknown to play the slain rapper apparently proved fruitless: Soulja Boy told MTV in May he had been approached to audition for the role. Antoine Fuqua will direct the Morgan Creek production; 2Pac's mother, Afeni Shakur-Davis, is an executive producer.

Prognosis: Very close to definite, but the budget will likely hinge on whether 2Pac is portrayed by a star or an unknown.

FRANK SINATRA

The latest: The team is coming together at Universal Pictures, including director Martin Scorsese and producer Scott Rudin. It's four years away, though, as 2015 is Sinatra's centennial. The Sinatra family, which controls the music and his image, has all rights under a single roof.

Prognosis: The start is easily three years away, plenty of time for other projects to arise. Everyone will want this to be perfect.

Singer Shania Twain gets Hollywood star (AFP)

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Canadian country pop diva Shania Twain has been honored with a star on Hollywood's storied Walk of Fame, and voiced surprise that she had come so far.

"I mean, why is a girl from Timmins, Ontario, standing here, getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame?" the Grammy-winner asked. "I really don't know... it's a small miracle, to be honest, that I am here today."

Twain, who just published her memoirs and launched a new TV show, was joined by veteran actress Bo Derek to receive the star, the 2,442nd to grace the sidewalk along Hollywood Boulevard.

Born Eilleen Regina Edwards in Windsor, Ontario, she and her two sisters were adopted by her mother's second husband, Jerry Twain, who legally changed their last names to his.

Twain began singing in bars when she was eight years old to help her family make ends meet. At 13, she performed on the Canadian TV series the "Tommy Hunter Show" and was in several bands before leaving high school.

Her mother and stepfather died in a car crash in 1987, when she returned to her hometown of Timmins to care for her younger siblings, but Twain released a self-titled debut album in 1993 that reached 67th on the US country charts.

Her big break came with her second album "The Woman In Me" in 1995, which went on to sell more than 12 million copies, and won her a Grammy Award in 1996 for best country album.

The Hollywood honor came five months after the 45-year-old tied the knot with Frederic Thiebaud, two years after splitting with her husband of 14 years Robert Lange -- who allegedly had an affair with Thiebaud's then-wife.

Twain and music producer Lange had married in 1993, six months after meeting. Living between homes in New Zealand and Switzerland, the couple had a son who was six when they separated.

Hollywood star Blanchett digs in over carbon tax (AFP)

SYDNEY (AFP) – Hollywood star Cate Blanchett Tuesday defended her decision to front a campaign promoting the Australian government's carbon tax, saying she backed action on climate change for her children's sake.

Dubbed "Carbon Cate" by the Sunday Telegraph, the actor was attacked as being a jet-setting, multi-millionaire who was out of touch with ordinary Australians who fear a rise in the cost of living from a price on carbon.

"I'm not really surprised by the reactions from people on the other side of the debate. People are entitled to their opinion," said Blanchett, who was dismissed in one comment piece as "just another morally vain Hollywood star".

The Oscar-winning actor, who has three young boys with husband Andrew Upton, said there was a cost to society from carbon pollution, and this was what she was passionate about as a mother.

"That's where it gets me in the gut," she told The Sydney Morning Herald.

"I can't look my children in the face if I'm not trying to do something in my small way and to urge other people.

"Yes, I've been fortunate in my career but that's no reason not to stand up for something that I deeply believe in."

Blanchett's star role in the new television campaign, which is funded by a coalition of unions and green groups and urges Australians to "Say Yes" to a tax on carbon, has become a national talking point in the climate debate.

Centre-right opposition leader Tony Abbott used the celebrity endorsement to attack Prime Minister Julia Gillard in parliament on Monday.

"This is a prime minister who's happy to listen to actors, but she won't listen to voters," he said.

Australians are among the world's worst per capita carbon polluters and Gillard has proposed a tax to be levied on major industrial polluters by July 1, 2012, with plans for a full emissions trading scheme in three to five years.
