Green Day singer ejected from flight over pants (Reuters)
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Green Day rocker Billie Joe Armstrong has complained that he was booted from a Southwest Airlines flight in Oakland, California, because of the way he wore his pants.
Armstrong, 39, said on the website Twitter on Thursday, "Just got kicked off a Southwest flight because my pants sagged too low!..."
The flight was going from Oakland, California, to the Los Angeles suburb of Burbank, said Brad Hawkins, a spokesman for Southwest Airlines.
Cindy Qiu, an associate producer at Bay area television station ABC7/KGO-TV, was on the flight and described the incident on her company's website.
She said that Armstrong, when he was initially approached by a flight attendant and told to hike up his pants, said "Don't you have better things to do than worry about that?"
He then tried to take his seat but was asked to leave the plane, Qiu said on the ABC7 website.
The situation appears to have been soon resolved.
"As soon as we became aware of what had happened, we reached out to apologize for this customer's experience," Hawkins said. "He elected to take the next flight."
The Oakland-born Armstrong is the lead singer for the punk band Green Day, which came to fame in the 1990s with songs such as "When I Come Around." A musical called "American Idiot" based on the band's music is playing on Broadway.

"Green Lantern" falls short at box office (Reuters)
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The costly superhero movie "Green Lantern" flickered at the weekend box office in North America, while a Jim Carrey family comedy got a lukewarm reception.
According to studio estimates issued on Sunday, "Green Lantern" earned about $52.7 million -- at the lower end of expectations -- during its first three days of release across the United States and Canada.
The Warner Bros. 3D release will need to make up ground overseas to recoup its reported $200 million production budget and its $125 million worldwide marketing tab. (The studio said those numbers were too high, but declined to give its own figures.)
Ideally, the picture would have opened to about $55 million, said Dan Fellman, the president of domestic theatrical distribution at the Time Warner Inc unit. But it was too early to get an accurate picture of its prospects, he added.
Critics mauled the picture, which stars Ryan Reynolds as an intergalactic space cop. The relatively obscure character originated in a DC Comics book, and is the latest superhero to invade theaters in recent weeks following "Thor" ($65 million opening) and a fifth "X-Men" movie ($55 million).
Carrey's family comedy "Mr. Popper's Penguins" came in at No. 3 with $18.2 million, exceeding the diminished $10 million to $15 million expectations of its distributor, 20th Century Fox.
The News Corp unit was confident about the long-term prospects for its $55 million movie, citing strong exit polls. On the other hand "Penguins" has just a few more days to attract families before they all line up for Pixar Animation's "Cars 2" sequel beginning June 24.
The film, based on a 1938 children's book, stars Carrey as a divorced dad who reconnects with his children with the improbable help of a half-dozen penguins who run amok through his Manhattan apartment and across the city. Critics also gave it the thumbs down.
Carrey has not starred in a major hit since "Bruce Almighty" in 2003. His last live-action wide release, "Yes Man," also opened to about $18 million in 1998; the comedy finished up with $98 million domestically, but production costs alone were about $70 million.
Last weekend's champion, "Super 8," slipped to No. 2 with $21.3 million. The sci-fi mystery has earned $72.3 million after 11 days, according to Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc.

Popemobile 'to become green machine': report (AFP)
BERLIN (AFP) – Mercedes-Benz is making a greener hybrid Popemobile for Benedict XVI, the Wirtschaftswoche weekly paper said Saturday.
However a Vatican spokesman denied the paper's prediction that it should be ready for Benedict's visit to his native Germany in September.
According to the report, the new Popemobile will be based on the four-wheel drive M Class Mercedes with a hybrid electric-petrol motor.
The rechargeable lithium-ion battery will allow it to drive 30 kilometres (16 miles) without any polluting emissions.
The pope would not be allowed to use a purely electric-driven car as the Popemobile must have the capacity to take off swiftly in case of emergency, the paper said.
A Mercedes-Benz spokesman said the group could give no details on private clients "for reasons of confidentiality".
Marcedes has provided the special cars to successive popes since the 1980s, the special high-sized, reinforced glass design allowing for maximum viewing with high levels of security.
Last December, Cardinal Giovanni Lajolo, president of the governorate of Vatican City State, suggested Pope Benedict was "prepared to use an electric Popemobile," as long as it was efficient and reliable.
Benedict XVI, sometimes labelled "the green pope" in the Italian press, has emphasised the defence of "God's works" and therefore the need to protect the environment.
Vatican spokesman Federicoo Lombardi told AFP Saturday that while the project for new car was under development it was not yet finalised and the vehicle would not be ready before the end of the year.
"Green Lantern" on track to earn $20 million on Friday (Reuters)
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Warner Bros. Pictures' 3D superhero film "Green Lantern" -- starring Ryan Reynolds -- is on track to cross $20 million at the Friday box office, giving it a shot at a $57 million to $60 million debut over Father's Day weekend, according to early estimates.
Friday's total includes $3.4 million in midnight grosses.
Even rival studios are impressed by the strong business "Green Lantern" is doing, and credit an aggressive marketing campaign.
The other new entry over Father's Day weekend is 20th Century Fox's family film "Mr. Popper's Penguins," starring Jim Carrey.
In recent days, Fox lowered its expectations for the movie because of soft tracking. Based on Friday business, "Popper's Penguins" is looking at a weekend gross of $17 million to $19 million.
That's better than Fox's estimate of $10 million to $15 million, but still less than what the studio originally hoped for.

Box Office Preview: Lots of green for 'Lantern' (AP)

LOS ANGELES – Another superhero is about to enter the summer sweepstakes as Warner Bros.' "The Green Lantern" in 3-D, starring Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, smashes its way into more than 3,600 domestic theaters with an expected winning gross of near $60 million.
Directed by Martin Campbell, who helmed the "Casino Royale" and "Goldeneye" Bond films, this adaptation of a lesser-known DC Comics series is looking to build a potential new franchise by drawing action fans and Reynolds followers alike.
Paramount's "Super 8" enters its second weekend with solid midweek numbers and strong momentum from a better-than-expected debut and should experience no more than a 45-55 percent drop for a likely second-place take of about $20 million.
Fox's PG-rated "Mr. Popper's Penguins," starring Jim Carrey, should enter the box office race in third place at around $15 million. The film about a businessman whose life is turned upside down after inheriting six penguins offers a lighthearted alternative for families and younger kids in this testosterone-driven season.
Fox's "X-Men: First Class" in its third weekend and Paramount-Dreamworks' "Kung Fu Panda 2" in its fourth weekend will duke it out for fourth and fifth place in the $12 million range. Each film has made its mark globally, with "Kung Fu" passing $300 million and "X-Men" collecting more than $230 million.
Of course, there's always a chance Warner Bros.' global comedy phenomenon "The Hangover Part II" could hurl its way into the top five for a fourth straight weekend, stumbling in at around $10 million.

Cee Lo Green: "Voice" judges back for season two (Reuters)
NEW YORK (Billboard) – Before NBC's hit singing competition "The Voice" kicks off its finals phase and transitions to live broadcasts beginning June 7, Cee Lo Green tells Billboard.com that he and the other judges -- Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine -- are all likely returning for the show's second season later this year.
"We've already been secured for a second season, so prepare to see a lot more of myself, Christina, Blake and Adam, and a host of great artists doing their thing," said Green. When asked whether or not all four judges will definitely be back, the R&B singer said, "That would be the safe assumption. I haven't heard anything other than that. I'll be there, that's for sure."
In the meantime, fans of both Green and Aguilera can check out "Nasty," a new duet that leaked online this month. Green said that he kicked the song around for years before recording a version with Aguilera for the soundtrack of her 2010 movie, "Burlesque."
Although the song wasn't finished in time to make the album, Green said that he's happy it has seen the light of day. "Christina's one of my favorite voices to listen to They never gave up on that record, and it's a great song," he noted.
While he's not sure if "Nasty" will ever be officially released, he said that he and Aguilera could very well perform the track on an upcoming episode of "The Voice." "Most likely, once the incomparable Mark Burnett hears this song, I wouldn't doubt for a second that he strongly suggests that we would do it," he said.
While Green said that his commitment to "The Voice" -- as well as an arena tour supporting Rihanna that kicks off June 4 -- has made it "increasingly difficult to focus" on new music, but noted that his experience on the reality show has thus far been "very gratifying." He also said that he respectfully disagreed with "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson, who described the concept of "The Voice" as "spinning around with gimmicky chairs" in an interview earlier this month.
"Randy is a personal friend of mine, and he is well within his rights to voice his opinion," said Green. "I believe that's a little harsh to say that that's 'gimmicky.' I don't believe that to be true I believe that it was very savvy of the creators of 'The Voice' to give it a different spin. And that spin gives us an opportunity to co-exist. I don't believe we're competing; I believe there is a co-existence."
