SYDNEY (AFP) – Popular Australian children's entertainers The Wiggles have entered the bidding race for the flamboyant hat worn by Princess Beatrice at the royal wedding.

The colourful quartet want to bring the headwear Down Under, and joked that they may give it to cricketer Ricky Ponting to wear when he next bats against England.

"We wear some pretty crazy costumes on stage but this hat beats them all," blue Wiggle Anthony Field was quoted as saying in the Sydney Daily Telegraph on Wednesday.

"If we win, we might give it to Ricky Ponting to wear when he bats against the Poms (England) next time.

"It would certainly distract the bowler."

The princess, the oldest daughter of Prince Andrew and a granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth, has put the Philip Treacy creation on online auction site eBay, with bidding currently at ?18,400 (about $30,000).

Proceeds of the sale will be split between two charities: the United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF, and British charity Children in Crisis.

The Wiggles are UNICEF Australia ambassadors.

The 22-year-old princess is using the notoriety of the hat, which generated almost as much publicity as newlyweds Prince William and his wife Catherine -- although much of it highly critical -- to offload it.

Observers compared the creation to a toilet seat and a giant pretzel, and it has inspired its own Facebook page, "Princess Beatrice's ridiculous royal wedding hat".

While of course Kate Middleton's wedding dress is the star of the show, it's the guest's hats and fascinators that have caught people's attentions as well at the royal wedding.

Princesses Beatrice, 22, and Eugenie, 21, cousins to Prince William, topped their wedding outfits with some outrageously fashionable headpieces.

According to UsMagazine.com, the sisters, daughters of Prince Andrew, Duke of York, and Sarah Ferguson, chose Philip Treacy to design their fascinators.

"Beatrice loves her glamorous dresses and her hair being curly or big -- like Mummy's -- and I hate volume. I like my hair to be sort of flat," Eugenie told The Telegraph. "I like just throwing on a pair of jeans and generally being more understated. She is more 'Let's do the glamour.' We're chalk and cheese."
