2 year sentence for convicted Hilton trespasser (AP)

LOS ANGELES – A man convicted of attempting to burglarize Paris Hilton's home has been sentenced to two years in state prison.

City News Service reported that Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Kellogg also recommended during Wednesday's hearing that Nathan Lee Parada undergo mental health counseling.

A jury took less than an hour in April to convict the 32-year-old of felony attempted residential burglary for trying to break into Hilton's house in August.

The socialite testified during Parada's trial about being awoken early Aug. 24 to the sound of Parada banging on Hilton's window with a knife. Parada told a detective he planned to steal as much as he could carry and move to a deserted island.

His defense attorney argued that Parada had not taken antidepressant medication for days before his arrest.

Reggae star Banton asks for shorter jail sentence (AP)

TAMPA, Fla. – Jamaican reggae singer Buju Banton is asking for a shorter prison sentence.

The Grammy winner was convicted in February of conspiring to set up a cocaine deal in Florida in 2009. He faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison at his sentencing hearing June 23 in Tampa federal court.

In court documents filed Thursday, Banton's attorney, David Markus, says a 15-year-sentence is "way more than necessary" in Banton's case.

He contends that Banton's limited participation in the drug buy, his charitable work in Jamaica and his otherwise clean record entitle the singer to a reduced sentence.

The documents include letters of support for Banton from actor Danny Glover, reggae singer Stephen Marley and Atlanta Hawks basketball player Etan Thomas.

Banton also seeks an acquittal and a new trial.

Lohan begins serving sentence on house arrest (AP)

LOS ANGELES – Lindsay Lohan returned to a women's jail before dawn on Thursday and was released before rush hour to begin serving a four-month jail sentence at her home for a probation violation.

The actress left the lockup with an ankle monitor that she must wear for about 35 days, sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

The term is longer than the three weeks or less that Lohan would have spent in a solitary confinement unit at the jail, where she served 14 days last summer for another probation violation.

Whitmore said the "Mean Girls" star is paying for the costs of her monitoring.

Superior Court Judge Stephanie Sautner sentenced Lohan to 120 days in jail and 480 hours of community service in April after determining the actress took a necklace without permission from a store near her home.

The judge said at a hearing that if Lohan served time under house arrest, she could not leave to whittle down her community service hours at a women's shelter and the county morgue.

Lohan pleaded no contest earlier this month to misdemeanor grand theft but did not receive additional jail time. The jail term was imposed after Sautner determined Lohan violated her probation in a 2007 drunken driving case.

Whitmore said the actress was cooperative when she turned herself in, and it took about an hour for her to be fingerprinted and booked. No new mugshot was taken.

Lohan's attorney, Shawn Holley, did not immediately return an email message seeking comment.

The actress has been cast to appear as the wife of John Gotti Jr. in a biopic of the infamous New York mob family. Shooting is scheduled to begin later this year.

Steve Honig, a spokesman for the film, "Gotti: Three Generations" declined comment Thursday.
