New monument to mark Les Paul's grave in Wisconsin (AP)

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Music legend Les Paul is getting a new granite memorial to mark his gravesite in southeast Wisconsin.

His family and friends are planning a public dedication ceremony on Saturday at his grave at Prairie Home Cemetery, Waukesha.

The Les Paul Estate commissioned Rock of Ages of Vermont to design, build and install the 500 square foot granite monument. Ford Construction of Waukesha laid the foundation and New Eden Landscape Architecture of Milwaukee designed the landscaping.

The site will include granite slabs containing Paul's biography.

Nicknamed the "Wizard of Waukesha," Paul created the first solid-body electric guitar and developed technology and recording techniques that set the standard in the industry like tape echo, multitrack recordings and overdubs.

Paul died in 2009 at age 94.

Italian tenor in grave condition after crash (AP)

ROME – An Italian tenor who won fame after subbing for Luciano Pavarotti is fighting for his life in a Sicilian hospital after a road accident.

Salvatore Licitra's website says he is in very serious condition in Catania's Garibaldi hospital. Hospital officials Tuesday could not be reached for comment.

Italian news reports say the 43-year-old suffered severe head and chest injuries when he crashed on his scooter into a wall in southeastern Sicily on Saturday night.

The local website Cataniaoggi quoted the hospital's intensive care chief, Sergio Pintaudi, as saying Licitra likely suffered an interruption of blood flow to the brain just before the crash.

The ANSA news agency reported that Licitra is in a coma.

Licitra stepped in for Pavarotti at New York's Metropolitan Opera in 2002.

Diana returns from grave in shocking Newsweek cover (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Princess Diana has returned from the grave on the front cover of Newsweek in a picture that imagines her, and her life, as it might have been had she lived to mark her 50th birthday on Friday.

But the picture and story -- which speculates that Diana would have twice remarried, used Botox, and been slightly jealous of new daughter-in-law Kate Middleton -- provoked mostly howls of disgust as they arrived on U.S. newsstands the same week that Prince William and his new bride begin an official visit to North America.

"Shocking, brilliant or just plain cheap?" asked the Los Angeles Times. News blog Mediaite.com called it "disrespectful on so many levels", while The Atlantic Wire ran the headline "How Creepy is Princess Diana's Ghost?".

Newsweek editor-in-chief Tina Brown, a Briton who wrote a gossipy 2007 biography about the late princess, imagines that if Diana had not died in a 1997 Paris car crash, she would have moved to New York, remained "great-looking," been friends with her ex-husband Prince Charles and his new wife (and Diana's old nemesis) Camilla, and have 10 million followers on Twitter.

But it's the digitally-enhanced front page photo of Diana -- imagining her as still slim and chic, if a little wrinkled -- that has caused the biggest outrage. Diana is shown walking alongside a smiling, and admiring, Kate Middleton.

"This is beyond tacky", commented one writer on the New York Magazine website.

"Ugh this is SO tasteless...let the poor woman RIP...if i were any of her family members i'd be so offended and upset by this," wrote a woman on the Newsweek comments page. Some others said they were canceling their subscriptions to the U.S. weekly news magazine.

The Newsweek feature also fantasizes about Diana's Facebook page, imagining her "liking" the movie "The King's Speech" and TV series "The Real Housewives of New York", hanging out with David and Victoria Beckham, and sending supportive messages to spiritual physician Deepak Chopra and Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei.

But it is her supposed relationship with the new bride of her eldest son, Prince William, where Brown is perhaps most controversial.

"The rising public adoration of Kate would have afforded Diana some tricky moments. Pleased, yes. But....Diana would have had to adjust to a broadening of the limelight," Brown writes.

She also speculates that Diana would have been a defender against royal snobbery of Middleton's non-aristocratic upbringing "and ostentatiously made Carole Middleton, Kate's dynamic mother, her new BFF."

Prince William and Kate Middleton, now formally known as the Duchess of Cambridge, arrive in Canada on Thursday for their first official visit overseas as a married couple.

They will also visit southern California from July 8-10.

Missy Elliott says Graves' disease not so grave (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Rap star Missy Elliott on Friday insisted her battle with the thyroid malady Graves' disease has not sidelined her career, a day after it was revealed that she has the ailment.

"I was diagnosed with Graves' disease about three years ago, but it really hasn't slowed me down at all," Elliott said in a written statement.

Elliott, who gained fame in the 1990s and whose hit songs include "Get Ur Freak On" and "Work It," has won four Grammys but has not released an album since 2005's "The Cookbook."

Some media reports on Thursday speculated that the long delay since her last album could be due to the illness, first diagnosed in 2008.

The 39 year-old Elliott talks about her Graves' disease in a taped interview for the VH1 cable show "Behind the Music" set to air on June 29. She describes how it shut down her nervous system and caused her hair to fall out.

But on Friday, Elliott said her condition has recently improved.

"Under my doctor's supervision, I've been off medication for about a year and I'm completely managing the condition through diet and exercise," she said.

Patients with Graves' disease have a thyroid gland that overproduces the hormone thyroxine, which can affect a person's appearance and energy level.

The disease is incurable, but symptoms can be handled with treatment, according to medical organization the Mayo Clinic.

Elliott said on Friday that, far from being inactive, she has since her diagnosis toured Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia and written and produced Grammy-nominated songs for Monica, Keyshia Cole and Jazmine Sullivan.

Elliott is working on an album tentatively titled "Block Party," with producer and rapper Timbaland.

A source told The Mirror, “It was very important for William to take Kate to visit his mum just before their wedding. Diana is still a huge part of her boys’ everyday life and always will be. It is tragic that she won’t be there to see the wedding, and that she never got to meet his bride.
