Kid Rock feeling optimistic about Detroit football (AP)

NEW YORK – Kid Rock will be celebrating the kickoff of the National Football League season with a concert at Lambeau Field, but his thoughts are with his hometown Detroit Lions.

"I think the Lions are going to win nine or 10 games," Kid Rock said by phone this week. "They really have turned it around. ... It's been a long time coming here in Detroit."

The Lions haven't had a winning season since 2000. Last year they won six of their 16 games, which was four more than they won in 2009 — and six more than in 2008.

Kid Rock, who's known for dabbling in musical styles from hip-hop and hard rock to country and Southern rock, said in an interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday that it's been tough being a football fan in Detroit ever since he can remember. But it helps ease the pain to be a fan of more than one football team, so Kid Rock has adopted the Green Bay Packers as one of his teams.

On Thursday, Kid Rock will join Lady Antebellum and Maroon 5 for a concert at Lambeau Field, the home of the Packers, in Green Bay, Wis., where the Super Bowl champions will play the New Orleans Saints in the inaugural game of the NFL season.

Kid Rock, whose hits include "Bawitdaba" and "Cowboy," said he expects an energetic crowd for the season opener, which will air on NBC.

"I've been to a playoff game in Lambeau Field, so I know their level of intensity," he said.

Kid Rock is a sports fan, but he's more partial to football: He was born on Super Bowl Sunday, in 1971, when the Baltimore Colts beat the Dallas Cowboys in Miami.

Still, he had a backup plan if the NFL work stoppage had scuttled the season: "Just watch NASCAR."

Feeling flush? Toting up the tab for Cannes (AFP)

CANNES, France (AFP) – Coming to Cannes with a movie in competition next year? Don't forget your black-tie best for the red carpet -- and above all, don't forget the money. You'll need a lot of it.

"Everybody thinks that if you're in Cannes and in competition, you must be rich -- but it's the other way around. You're broke!" says French producer Jean Brehat with a laugh.

Brehat should know. He's been haunting the Croisette since 1996, bringing a total of five films to the French Riveria so far to be considered for the Palme d'Or and other honours.

They included Bruno Dumont's "Humanite" in 1999 and "Flanders" in 2006, both of them Grand Prix winners, and Rachid Bouchareb's "Days of Glory" (2006) and "Outside the Law" (2010) in the parallel Directors' Fortnight series.

This year Brehat's baby is Dumont's "Hors Satan" in the avant-garde Un Certain Regard category.

"When a film is in competition, the festival puts up the director and two or three actors for three nights and pays the cost of the trip from the airport" a half-hour away in Nice, he said.

"You pay for everything else," including air fare, which can be pricey if a film's core team is scattered around the world.

What's more, "three nights is too little to meet all the demands of the press" who come to Cannes in force and represent a unique opportunity to plug a picture that was very likely shot on a shoestring budget.

So that means an additional two or three days in Cannes, adding up to "five or six hotel nights at 300 to 500 euros ($425 to $710) a night" for perhaps a dozen people if the screenwriter, lesser actors and co-producers join in.

"For example," he said, "you systematically have to bring a cinematographer to oversee the projection, even if the festival has its own dedicated team" to ensure the best image on the big screen.

The stakes are high, because any gaffe could handicap a producer's ability to sell a feature to distributors from all over the world who also descend on Cannes for its hugely important film market.

"It's like being a painter who gets ready for an exhibition and personally checks the way the canvases hang in the gallery," he said.

Then there's the publicist, more often than not a freelancer who brings along his or her own team and rents space for interviews -- often an apartment that can be hired only by the fortnight, not the week.

And finally, there's the small matter of a big party -- no small consideration at a festival where the talk of the Croisette can be as much about last night's fabulous soiree as it is about tomorrow's world premiere.

"For something barebones, it's 20,000 euros," Brehat said. "For something proper, you're looking at 70,000 euros."

"On the beach with 300 guests is 100,000 euros -- and at the Majestic (arguably the best hotel in Cannes) it can go up to one million euros with champagne and hors d'oeuvres."

Not counting the party, he said, having a film selected for Cannes can cost 120,000 to 130,000 euros for a big production, around half that for a smaller picture -- "and the return is zero".

"But the official competition here is the best in the world," the producer said. "There's nothing that tops it, except the Oscars."

'Top Gun' at 25: Still Feeling the Need for Speed (ContributorNetwork)

Twenty-five years ago, Tom Cruise first felt the need for speed in "Top Gun," a testosterone-fueled adventure about Navy fighter pilots. Cruise plays Lt. Pete Mitchell, a rebellious pilot who rightly earns the call sign "Maverick." With Lt. Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards) as his Radio Intercept Officer (RIO) , Maverick heads to the Navy Fighter Weapons School in Miramar, Calif., to receive advanced training.

A definitive movie from the 1980's, "Top Gun" has characters, situations and dialogue that make it an instant classic.

What is Maverick's gutsiest flying maneuver?

The opening scenes of "Top Gun" show Maverick and Goose engaging with a couple of MiG-28's. To save fellow officers Cougar and Merlin (John Stockwell and Tim Robbins), Maverick does an inverted 4G descent, placing him about 2 meters above the enemy's canopy. Maverick gives the startled enemy pilot the one-fingered salute while Goose takes a Polaroid photograph of the whole incident.

This engagement proved too much for Cougar, who turns in his wings. Following his resignation, Maverick and Goose become the top flyers and are sent to the elite TOPGUN training program at Miramar. Later in the movie, Navy Fighter Weapons School instructors analyze and criticize Maverick's bold move with the MiG-28, saying that is an example of how not to engage the enemy.

How did Pete Mitchell first meet Charlotte Blackwood?

After a preliminary briefing at TOPGUN, Maverick and Goose head out to a local watering hole. Following their standard operating procedures, Goose bets Maverick twenty dollars that he can't have carnal knowledge on the premises "with a member of the opposite sex this time." Maverick immediately targets Charlotte Blackwood (Kelly McGillis), a pretty blonde sitting at the bar.

Going for broke, Pete breaks into an acapella version of "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" and is joined by Goose and other students from TOPGUN. When Charlotte asks him how many times he used that approach, Pete says twice, but he crashed and burned on the first attempt. With Charlotte, however, he's waiting to see how things turn out. Unfortunately for Maverick, Charlotte Blackwood, call sign 'Charlie', is a civilian contractor for the Navy and a TOPGUN instructor.

Why doesn't Goose party as hard as Maverick?

After Maverick gets them in trouble by breaking the TOPGUN rules of engagement, Goose has a quiet heart-to-heart with his friend, saying that "he just wants to graduate." Lt. Bradshaw, as it turns out, has a wife Carole (Meg Ryan) and a young son back home that he's concerned about. Carole brings their little boy out on a visit to Miramar and, as Goose plays a credible version of "Great Balls of Fire" on the piano, Carole utters the immortal line "Goose, you big stud, take me to bed or lose me forever."

Pete Mitchell typically is cocky and self-confident. How does he lose his pilot's edge?

On their final training flight, Maverick and rival Iceman (Val Kilmer) are vying to win the TOPGUN trophy, which is given to the best of the best at Miramar. Flying in tight formation, Maverick and Goose are caught in Iceman's backwash, which causes a double engine failure. With their fighter jet in a flat spin, the two are forced to eject, but Goose hits the canopy head-first and dies instantly. Overcome with guilt, Maverick is unable to engage the enemy in later test flights and temporarily quits the program.

Moohahahahaaa! Oh how we joke. Of course Renee might well be feeling horny, she's a single gal now after all. But she certainly isn't Satan-horny.

Renee was snapped at an event to promote a limited edition bag for Breast Health International charity in Milan standing in front of a red circle which gave the impression she had sprouted scary horns.

Fear not. She hasn't. As you were, heatworld...
