Anne Hathaway to star in film version of "Miserables" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) – Some good may finally be coming out of Anne Hathaway's performance as host of this year's Academy Awards: a starring role in the film version of "Les Miserables."

In February, while serving as co-host of the poorly received Oscars event, the actress sang a more than credible rendition of "On My Own," a song from the musical.

Now, Broadway World is reporting that Hathaway is in contention to play Fantine in Tom Hooper's adaptation of the hit.

The publication says former Oscar host Hugh Jackman -- the man who Hathaway personally sung her rendition to in February, and who is set to play Jean Valjean in the Broadway show -- pushed for Hathaway to get the role.

Hathaway stars as Catwoman in the upcoming "The Dark Knight Rises."

Hathaway's rep did not return a call or email Tuesday.

Hathaway mocked for Yorkshire accent in "One Day" (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) – British film critics have poured scorn on U.S. actress Anne Hathaway for her northern English accent in the movie "One Day," calling it variously "another Hollywood stinker" and "all over the shop."

"The Devil Wears Prada" and "Rachel Getting Married" star said she had worked with a dialect coach to get the voice of Yorkshire "lass" Emma right in the film based on David Nicholls' popular novel.

She also told the BBC that she watched the popular British television soap opera "Emmerdale," set in Yorkshire, to train for the part.

The preparation did not pay off in many viewers' eyes, however, as critics queued up to pounce on her pronunciation of a notoriously tricky accent.

"The Oscar-nominated actress's every line is masked by one of the most honkingly rubbish Yorkshire accents you've ever heard," wrote Robbie Collin in the Telegraph newspaper.

The review drew comparisons between Hathaway as Emma and Dick Van Dyke as Bert the London cockney in "Mary Poppins," deemed one of the worst ever offenses against a British accent on the big screen.

Jan Moir of the Daily Mail questioned Hathaway's suitability for the role in One Day, arguing that she is far too glamorous to pull it off.

As for the accent, she added: "Just like nothing can camouflage Hathaway's incandescent beauty in One Day, nothing can hide the awfulness of her fake Yorkshire accent.

"Really, it is quite something to behold. For it is a nomadic accent - it was born under a wandering star. It's all over the shop."

Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian was kinder on Hathaway's delivery, saying "it's not as terrible as all that" in a two-out-of-five star review.

But he went on to liken the actress to "Geoff Boycott in drag," a reference to the famous former Yorkshire cricketer renowned for his thick accent and gruff demeanor.

Some commentators have stuck up for Hathaway, with the Evening Standard's Henry Hitchings arguing that British audiences are too proprietorial about their accents.

He also said that Hathaway's "nomadic" accent could be a deliberate way of portraying her character's "anxieties about her fragile, transitional existence."

Last year Hollywood star Russell Crowe was the target of some derision for his accent in blockbuster "Robin Hood," and walked out of a radio interview after it was suggested his character sounded like "an Irishman who took frequent holidays in Australia."

LONDON – Anne Hathaway felt the pressure to deliver the goods in her latest role.

The American actress brings David Nicholls' character of Emma Morely to the big screen in the adaptation of his book, "One Day."

Hathaway said as a book lover she understood the need to please fans of the best-selling novel.

"People feel so possessive over Emma and so it's not only that they want you to get her right, they really don't want you to get her wrong."

The director, Lone Scherfig — "An Education" — helped put her mind at rest, telling her that she had to concentrate on her own interpretation.

And then there is the accent. Morely is from the city of Leeds, in Yorkshire in northern England, so Brooklyn-born Hathaway had to learn a specific regional dialect for the role.

Critics have said Hathaway's attempt is distracting and unreliable.

The Oscar-nominee admitted that in preparing for the role she asked anyone she met from Yorkshire to speak to her, so she could learn the accent.

"One of the things I was struck by was that so often when people leave Yorkshire they don't hang on to the accent, the accent evens out and starts to mimic some new sounds from where they're from, so you can have 10 people from Yorkshire and they have 10 completely utterly different accents. But I worked with a dialect coach and just kind of tried my best."

Unfortunately she couldn't rely on her director for guidance: Scherfig is Danish and admits she can't pinpoint a Leeds accent.

"Yes it is a concern," she said of Hathaway's accent. "But they're actors and actors they always play things that they are not, that's part of their job."

Writer Nicholls, who adapted his novel for the screenplay, doesn't think it's an issue.

"I understand the trepidation but British actors are constantly playing American roles and it's always seen as a rather good thing and I see no reason why it shouldn't be a good thing working the other way."

The film tells the story of university friends Emma and Dexter — played by British actor Jim Sturgess — who spend the night together following their graduation.

It catches up with them on the same day of every year for 20 years to see how their lives are changing.

"One Day" opens in U.K. theaters on Wednesday.

New York – Movie star, Oscar host and fashionista Anne Hathaway didn't disappoint her New York fans on Monday, Aug. 8, as she hit the red carpet for the premiere celebration of her new romance film "One Day." Decked out in an Alexander McQueen cocktail dress with a glittery golden bodice, the actress brought the glamour she's become known for, especially since that famous Oscar night last year when she changed outfits eight times in the course of the show.

So she was positively demure at the "One Day" premiere held at the Lincoln Center Loews Theaters, for she only changed her clothes once. The gorgeous brunette strolled the red carpet at the theater with co-stars Jim Sturgess and Patricia Clarkson as they promoted the Lone Scherfig-directed drama; afterwards, as the cast and executives from Focus Features reassembled for a post-party, Hathaway chose a floaty, bubble-skirted cream number.

The romance follows a couple from their first intimate encounter on their college graduation day through the ensuing years, with the audience only seeing the pair on that same day of the year. It's something of a rocky ride for the characters, but that's not what Hathaway has been experiencing in her own romantic life. Escorted to the premiere by Adam Shulman, her boyfriend of three years, Hathaway glowed with contentment, reflecting comments she made back in November 2010 while chatting with reporters about her last romantic flick, "Love and Other Drugs."

"I think that love is everything. I think that most people want love. I think the journey is sometimes really rocky to find it and it's an exploration and an adventure always and that's one of the most wonderful parts of being alive and one of the worst parts of being alive when it doesn't go well," she said. " It's an incredibly intoxicating feeling, that initial rush and then as you spend more time in it and it deepens it becomes something else entirely. It becomes all the epic things that the world is made up of, or at least that's been my experience."

There was plenty of love in the air at the "One Day" premiere, as Kevin Jonas snuggled with his wife of two years, Danielle Deleasa. Others on hand to check out the new film were actress Michael Michele, Imogen Potts and Beth Ostrosky, model Coco Rocha, and fashion designer Rachel Roy.

Anne Hathaway, James Franco Bring the Funny in Oscar Promo

As the Academy Awards inch closer, a new promo for the big night shows co-hosts Anne Hathaway and James Franco prepping for the ultimate hosting gig -- complete with dance lessons and wardrobe-malfunction preparedness.

In the new clip, Franco and Hathaway can be seen working on their fitness -- using Oscar statues as weights -- and brushing up on their seemingly rough dancing skills.

And, in an effort to prevent any wardrobe issues, Franco jokingly practices throwing a blanket over Hathaway as a strap on her dress breaks while on stage. See the video after the jump!

"I'm just kind of going with the flow," he said, getting some helpful hints from a past host. "Billy Crystal said to wear tennis shoes, or something, but I don't think I'm going to follow that advice."
