LONDON (AFP) – Venus Williams zipped through the first round at Wimbledon after unveiling a typically flamboyant outfit with a "peek-a-boo" back as the former champion made a winning start to her bid for a sixth title.
Venus, playing only her second tournament since suffering a hip injury at the Australian Open, sauntered to her seat on Court Two ahead of her straight sets win over Uzbekistan's Akgul Amanmuradova wearing an extravagant white creation bearing the EleVen logo of her own fashion label.
With a large opening in the back of her top and some lace-style embroidery, as well as a zip down the front and across the hips, it looked like Venus was wearing a pair of net curtains rather than a tennis outfit.
The diva image was completed by a pair of shorts and a bling handbag.
Despite the outfit's slightly odd look, the American insisted the creation was one of her more simple designs.
"It's a jumper. Jumpers are very now, as is lace. The shoulders have a lot of draping, which is also in the moment," Venus said.
"It's just a trendy dress. I'm really into zippers, so it has a focal point of a zipper in the front. It's just fun.
"The back, I don't know what you call it, it's like a cutout or like a peek a boo. I'm always trying to do something different and fun.
"But more lately now I'm really trending towards simplicity. I'm not sure why. It's just how I feel right now. Everything is getting more simple."
