Princess Beatrice and her hat made style news at the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. The technical term for the hat is called a fascinator, and aptly so. Victoria Beckham also wore a smaller fascinator to match her black dress. Princess Eugenie, the sister of Beatrice, also wore a wild hat. Most women wore a hat to Westminster Abbey. Unlike men, they were able to keep their headpieces on inside the Abbey.
What are fascinators? According to The Budget Fashionista, they aren't quite like a full-fledged hat and are designed to be colorful.
Fascinators are "In"
Fascinators became a wild trend in 2009. When women would wear fine lacy head coverings, it was an alternative to large expensive hats that upper class women used to flaunt. How ironic that a poor woman's head covering has become something adorned by the rich and famous to the world's most popular wedding.
If you don't want to wear a wide hat like traditional wedding guests, a fascinator is a nice alternative. They don't take up as much space as a huge hat. They can be attached to the head with hair pins with a close-cropped or up do.
For some events, the wilder the better for fascinators. They can be worn indoors and out. You won't need fancy hair because everyone will notice the hat first before the hair. Of course it has to match the outfit you wear.
Designers
Philip Treacy of London created the hats of both Princesses of York for the royal wedding. Sarah Ferguson's daughters may have stood out from the crowd but they made instant fashion news with their wild fascinators. Treacy's other hats are equally as unique if you peruse his website.
Fascinators NYC are much simpler and more affordable. They are more like adornments for your head for whatever occasion to match your outfit. You can get styles for evening gowns, prom, wedding or just a night on the town.
David's Bridal has over a dozen styles of fascinators for weddings that retail around $80 to $130. They will surely sell more of them this summer as brides prepare for their weddings. The retail bridal store wins again as they already have several dress styles much like those worn at the royal wedding.
If you want a fairytale wedding just like the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, there are plenty of designers who can mimic the style if they haven't already. For your guests, make sure they get a fascinator and they will be the talk of the party afterward.
