Miley Cyrus, Adele on board for Bob Dylan cover set

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - What do Bob Dylan and Miley Cyrus have in common -- besides their perpetually chipper demeanor, of course?

They're both doing their part to benefit human rights organization Amnesty International on its 50th anniversary.

The human-rights organization is releasing a sprawling, four-CD collection, "Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan Honoring 50 Years of Amnesty International," on January 24, with the proceeds going to AI, according to numerous news reports.

The collection, which primarily consists of cover versions of tunes from the Dylan catalog, encompasses 80 artists. Among those taking a crack at Mr. Zimmerman's songbook: Adele, Sting, Elvis Costello, My Chemical Romance, Ke$ha and, yes, "Party in the USA" songbird Cyrus, who will contribute her take on Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go."

On the other end of the age spectrum, 92-year-old folk icon Pete Seeger will offer his version of "Forever Young," accompanied by a children's chorus.

Aside from Dylan's original 1964 rendition of "Chimes of Freedom," all of the songs will be new recordings.

George Michael postpones tour due to pneumonia

LONDON (Reuters) - British singer George Michael has been forced to postpone the rest of his European tour due to ongoing treatment for "severe" pneumonia, his spokeswoman said on Friday.

But she denied reports that the former Wham! frontman was suffering from serious heart problems and was "slowly improving" in hospital in Vienna.

"George Michael is ill with pneumonia and any other speculation regarding his illness is unfounded and untrue," she said in a statement.

"He is receiving excellent medical care; he is responding to treatment and slowly improving."

His doctors advised that the chart-topping artist behind such solo hits as "Careless Whisper" and "Faith" should postpone the rest of his Symphonica tour.

He is being treated by Christoph Zielinski and Thomas Staudinger, who said in a joint statement:

"George Michael has severe community acquired pneumonia and is being treated as an inpatient. His condition has stabilized and he is responding to treatment.

"From the current point of view, the time until recovery cannot be estimated, but he will not be able to perform the rest of the tour. Besides medical treatment, complete rest and peace and quiet are mandatory."

All British dates of his Symphonica European tour have been called off, including three this month and 11 in December.

Further announcements will be made once the gigs can be rescheduled, and ticket holders were asked to retain their tickets.

Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher call it quits

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Film and television stars Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher said on Thursday they are ending their marriage after six years, breaking up one of the most widely followed May-December romances Hollywood has seen.

The marriage between Moore, 49, and Kutcher 33, has been in trouble since late September when a San Diego woman went public about a brief affair she had with Kutcher, a star on CBS television comedy "Two and a Half Men," during a weekend of partying in the southern California city.

"It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton. As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life," Moore said in a statement.

The star of films such as "Ghost," "G.I. Jane" and "Indecent Proposal" also asked for "compassion and privacy" and said it was a "trying time for me and my family.

Moore released her statement first and Kutcher quickly followed on Twitter where both were early converts to the social network, posting messages and pictures about their personal lives. Ashton has more than eight million followers and Moore has more than four million.

"I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi. Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail. Love and Light, AK," Kutcher tweeted.

Moore was married twice previously, the first time to singer Freddy Moore and the second to film star Bruce Willis, with whom she has three children. They divorced in 2000.

She began dating Kutcher a few years after breaking up with Willis when Kutcher was a rising star on the TV sitcom "That '70s Show."

Their affair immediately became fodder for the tabloid press because of their 16-year age difference, but in the months and years after their wedding, it seemed they were living happily ever after.

But Hollywood can be cruel to celebrity couples and speculation about Kutcher straying from his marriage began to surface earlier this year. In September, Sara Leal, a 22-year-old part-time model told celebrity media that she had slept with Kutcher twice over a wild weekend of partying.

She told Britain's The Sun newspaper "I was attracted to him, and he was attracted to me," and said that Kutcher had told her he and Moore were separated.

In the past month, Moore and Kutcher had stayed out of the public spotlight and not commented on reports of the affair. They have offered only cryptic posts on Twitter, such as this from Moore on September 23, the eve of their sixth anniversary, quoting Greek philosopher Epictetus: "When we are offended at any man's fault, turn to yourself and study your own failings. Then you will forget your anger."

Apparently, she couldn't forget.

Jackson doctor defends self in NBC interview

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Michael Jackson's doctor, who refused to testify at his trial, said in an interview broadcast Thursday that the singer lied to him about his medical history and never revealed he had an addiction problem.

"I would hate to put blame on Michael as an individual," Dr. Conrad Murray told the "Today" show in the interview done days before the doctor's conviction.

"I only wish maybe in our dealings with each other he would have been more forthcoming and honest.to tell me these things about himself," he said.

Interviewer Savannah Guthrie asked: "Do you think he lied to you?"

"Definitely," Murray said.

"About what?" she asked.

"Certainly he was deceptive by not showing me his whole medical history, doctors he was seeing, treatments that he might have been receiving." Murray answered.

"Did you really not know he had an addiction problem?" Guthrie asked.

"Absolutely not," said Murray. "Did not have a clue."

Murray was convicted Monday of involuntary manslaughter for supplying the insomnia-plagued Jackson with the powerful operating-room anesthetic propofol to help him sleep as he rehearsed for his big comeback.

During the interview, Murray was shown video of bottles of medications from other physicians arrayed on Jackson's bedside table, suggesting Murray's suspicions should have been raised.

"I cannot prevent Michael from seeing other doctors for whatever reason," the doctor said.

"You must have realized the reason he hired you was to give him this drug, propofol," Guthrie said.

"No, not at all," Murray replied. "I met Michael with propofol. This was not something I introduced to Michael."

Experts testified at Murray's trial that propofol should not have been administered in Jackson's home, but the doctor disagreed.

Murray revealed Jackson was under the influence of propofol during a recording found on the doctor's cell phone. Murray said the recording, in which the heavily drugged Jackson talked in a slurred voice about his goal of building a major children's hospital, was made by accident.

Murray, 58, described Jackson as "a desperate man, desperate" during his final hours.

Asked by Guthrie how it felt to be blamed for Jackson's death, he said, "I loved Michael too. I'm as much of a fan as any of the others. To be blamed for his death has not been an easy thing."

"Are you the cause of Michael Jackson's death?" Guthrie asked.

"No, I am not," Murray said.

The interview with the Houston cardiologist was being aired Thursday and Friday. Other excerpts were released Wednesday.

Under questioning by Guthrie, Murray said it was not necessary for him to monitor Jackson in the hours before he died because he had given the pop star only a small dose of propofol. The doctor said that was the reason he didn't mention to arriving paramedics that Jackson had been given the drug.

Guthrie asked, "Well, you told them about the other drugs, but you didn't tell them about propofol?"

"Because it had no effect," Murray said. "It was not an issue."

The coroner, however, found that Jackson, 50, died of acute propofol intoxication complicated by other sedatives.

During the trial, Murray's defense tried to show that Jackson gave himself an extra dose of propofol while Murray was out of the room, but prosecution experts said there was no evidence to support what one witness called the crazy theory.

Asked by Guthrie if he became distracted that morning by phone calls, emailing and text messages, Murray said, "No I was not."

"When I looked at a man who was all night deprived of sleep, who was desperate for sleep and finally is getting some sleep, am I gonna sit over him, sit around him, tug on his feet, do anything unusual to wake him up? No," Murray said.

"You walked out of the room to talk on the phone?" Guthrie asked.

"Absolutely, I wanted him to rest," Murray replied.

Other doctors testified at Murray's trial that leaving a patient alone after administering an anesthetic was an egregious deviation from the standard of care expected of a physician.

In one exchange during the interview, Murray suggested that if he had known Jackson had a problem with addiction to medications he might have acted differently. Experts, however, testified that Murray should have researched Jackson's medical history before he undertook his treatment for insomnia.

On the day Jackson died, June 25, 2009, Murray said he believed he had weaned the singer from propofol, the drug Jackson called his "milk."

But when Jackson could not sleep, Murray told "Today," he gave the entertainer a very small dose of propofol.

In retrospect, he said he probably should have walked away when Jackson asked for propofol. But he said he would have been abandoning a friend.

Meanwhile, the disclosure that MSNBC will air a documentary about Murray brought outrage Wednesday from the executors of Jackson's estate, who said Murray is getting a prime-time platform to smear Jackson's reputation without fear of cross-examination.

The executors, John Branca and John McClain, demanded the program entitled "Michael Jackson and the Doctor: A Fatal Friendship" be cancelled. The network said it had no comment.

Murray is being held in Los Angeles County Jail awaiting sentencing Nov. 29 and could face up to four years in prison and the loss of his medical license.

Michael Jackson's doctor guilty of manslaughter

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Michael Jackson's personal doctor was found guilty on Monday of involuntary manslaughter in the pop star's drug-related death in 2009 but may not spend much time in jail.

Dr. Conrad Murray, 58, was led away in handcuffs after the jury in Los Angeles reached a unanimous verdict. Dozens of fans outside the court erupted in cheers and some burst into tears.

"Justice was served. Michael is with us," said Jackson's brother Jermaine.

Murray faces up to four years behind bars when he is sentenced on November 29 but may spend only months in Los Angeles' overcrowded cells.

Murray pleaded not guilty to giving the "Thriller" singer a fatal dose of the powerful anesthetic propofol -- normally used in surgery -- that was ruled the main cause of his death at the age of 50.

Prosecutors argued Murray was grossly negligent in administering the propofol to help Jackson sleep. Defense lawyers claimed Jackson delivered the fatal dose to himself.

The judge ordered Murray, who had been free on bail for two years, held in custody until his sentencing. The doctor did not testify at the six-week trial and looked impassive as the guilty verdict was announced in the packed courtroom.

Jackson's mother Katherine and sister Rebbie cried silently at the result. Other family members in court included his siblings La Toya and Randy, along with his father Joe.

"I am," Katherine Jackson said when reporters asked if she was pleased with the verdict.

Jackson was found lifeless at his Los Angeles mansion on June 25, 2009, about three weeks before he was due to begin a series of concerts in London aimed at returning him to the limelight after the humiliation of his 2005 trial and acquittal on child molestation allegations.

Murray admitted giving Jackson a small dose of propofol to help him sleep. But his lawyers argued the singer was dependent on the drug and likely gave himself an extra, fatal dose -- and swallowed a handful of sedatives -- without Murray knowing.

"THE CAUSATIVE FACTOR"

Murray's lawyer J. Michael Flanagan was asked by reporters if he was disappointed and he replied: "Of course."

Prosecutors said Murray was negligent for administering the drug in a home setting, failing to monitor Jackson, delaying a call to emergency services and failing to tell medical personnel he gave the singer propofol.

Judge Michael Pastor said Murray was "now a convicted felon who has been deemed the causative factor in Michael Jackson's death."

Pastor said the doctor should be detained before being sentenced to protect public safety.

Even if Murray is sentenced to the maximum four months, legal experts said involuntary manslaughter is not considered a serious felony in California law and carries a stipulation that only 50 percent of any sentence must be served behind bars.

Because of jail overcrowding, officials could release him after only months.

"It's pretty obvious by putting him in custody, which was the biggest surprise of the entire trial, that we're probably looking at a sentence of three to four years," Stan Goldman, a professor at Loyola Law School, told Reuters.

But he added: "I'd be surprised if a year from today Conrad Murray was still behind bars."

Still, Jackson fans were overjoyed. On the street outside the court, more than 100 of them whooped with joy and chanted "Thank you judge" as the verdict was read live on television.

Bus driver Dana Brenklin, 35, burst into tears.

"Of course it's not enough and it's not going to bring back Michael. But for two years, I had a project, justice for Michael Jackson, and I got what I wanted," Brenklin said.

Trial watchers said the guilty verdict was almost assured.

Prosecutors were required to prove only that Murray was reckless in his care. The judge told jurors the doctor could be found guilty even if the jury believed Jackson gave himself the propofol, as long as such a possibility was foreseeable.

"The prosecution did a great job of creating a portrait (of Murray) that asked 'Is this how someone would have acted if he was responsible?'" said Marcellus McRae, a former federal prosecutor who is now a trial lawyer with the New York-based law firm Gibson Dunn.

Shakira, 34, rose to fame in Latin America in the 1990s with her album "Pies Descalzos" and singles such as "Donde Estas Corazon" and "Estoy Aqui." Her second official album, "Donde Estan Los Ladrones?" garnered international success with singles such as "No Creo" and the Arab-inspired "Ojos Asi."

Bollywood film in Tibet flag trouble

A new Bollywood film has cut a scene showing a "Free Tibet" flag on the orders of India's censor board, sparking protests from the exiled Tibetan community, a report said on Wednesday.

"Rockstar", directed by Imtiaz Ali, ran into trouble over the scene which shows fans waving the flag as the male lead, played by popular actor Ranbir Kapoor, sings the song "Saada Haq" (Our Right).

The song was shot at the Tibetan Norbulingka monastery in McLeod Ganj, a town in the foothills of the Himalayas that is home to the Tibet government in exile in India and the Dalai Lama.

"Ali has made the deletioSns, affording the film a U/A (under adult supervision) rating," the Times of India reported Wednesday quoting the chief executive of the Indian censor board, Pankaja Thakur.

Beijing is extremely sensitive to any activity seen as "anti-China" and the presence of the Dalai Lama and the large Tibetan exile community in India is a constant irritant in relations between Asia's future superpowers.

The red and blue flag featuring a rising sun is a symbol of Tibetan resistance to Chinese rule.

Angry Tibetan activists in India said they would stage rallies across the country to protest the censor's decision to cut the scene.

"It is extremely disturbing that such a grotesque violation of free speech is occurring in the world’s largest democracy," said Dorjee Tseten, the country director of Students for a Free Tibet, in a website post.

Tseten also accused the Indian government of "caving in" to Chinese pressure instead of promoting and protecting the Tibetan people's basic human rights.

Ali, regarded as one of the most talented Bollywood directors with two back-to-back hits under his belt, denied taking any political stand in the film.

"I don't see anything controversial in either the intention or portrayal of the scene," he told the national NDTV news channel, adding the song was more about personal freedom rather than any geographical or political issue.

Clips of the song showing the flag can still be viewed on You Tube.

The film's music, composed by the Oscar-winning A.R. Rahman, is already topping the charts.

Kim Kardashian cancels Australian tour

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Attention, Australia: Kim Kardashian hasn't just left the building, she's left the country.

The "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star has abruptly abandoned her promotional blitz Down Under, amid questions about her divorce from NBA player Kris Humphries.

"She went to Australia to honor her commitments," a statement from her personal publicist reads. "However, during this very difficult time she felt it'd be best to return home to close friends and family."

Kardashian arrived in Sydney with her sister Khloe on Tuesday, and managed to promote her Kardashian Kollection line of handbags at events in venues such as Sydney nightclub Hugo's and the Westfield Miranda shopping center.

However, the reality TV personality has reportedly decided to fly back to Los Angeles either Thursday or Friday. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Kardashian is "devastated" by her impending divorce from Humphries and is unable to fulfill the remainder of her obligations in Australia -- which included an appearance at the Melbourne Cup Carnival Saturday.

Kardashian, 31, filed for divorce from Humphries Monday, after just 72 days of marriage.

The split has generated an onslaught of headlines, including numerous suggestions that the union was a publicity stunt, and reports that Kardashian had profited handsomely from the wedding.

As reported earlier, Kardashian and Humphries raked in about $18 million from the wedding, including $2.5 million from People for the wedding photos, and $15 million for the two-part E! special "Kim's Fairytale Wedding: A Kardashian Event."

In a statement following the split, Kardashian lamented, "I hope everyone understands this was not an easy decision. I had hoped this marriage was forever, but sometimes things don't work out as planned. We remain friends and wish each other the best."

Spokespersons for Kardashian did not immediately respond to TheWrap's request for comment.

Man pleads not guilty to hacking celebrity e-mails

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A Florida man pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to hacking into e-mail accounts to access and distribute nude photos and other personal information of numerous celebrities including actress Scarlett Johansson.

Christopher Chaney, 35, of Jacksonville, Florida was arrested on October 12 after an 11-month investigation dubbed "Operation Hackerazzi" by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Chaney was charged with 26 counts of cyber-related crimes for hacking into e-mails of "The Avengers" star Johansson, along with actress Mila Kunis ("Black Swan") and singer Christina Aguilera. Other victims were identified only by their initials, which included B.P. and J.A., among them.

The photos of 26-year-old Johansson showed her topless and in a towel with an exposed backside. She revealed in a Vanity Fair magazine interview they were taken for her now ex-husband, actor Ryan Reynolds, when they were still married.

Leaked photos of Kunis showed her in a tub filled with bubbles, showing only her face.

The day after he was arrested, Chaney told a Jacksonville, Florida TV station that he became addicted to prying into the affairs of celebrities and apologized.

"I was almost relieved months ago when they (the FBI) came and took my computer ... because I didn't know how to stop, he told the TV station.

On Tuesday, a Los Angeles judge set a trial date of December 27 and freed Chaney on a $110,000 bond. He will be allowed to return home, but must wear a court monitoring device.

If convicted of all the crimes, Chaney faces up to 121 years in jail.

Kim Kardashian files for divorce

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Reality TV star Kim Kardashian filed for divorce on Monday, just 72 days after marrying basketball player Kris Humphries in a lavish wedding that was billed as a "fairytale."

Kardashian, 31, star of the TV show "Keeping Up With the Kardashians", filed for divorce in Los Angeles Superior Court citing irreconcilable differences.

"After careful consideration, I have decided to end my marriage. I hope everyone understands this was not an easy decision. I had hoped this marriage was forever, but sometimes things don't work out as planned. We remain friends and wish each other the best," Kardashian said in a statement.

The court papers show Kardashian has asked the court to confirm that jewelry and other personal items, as well as earnings before and during the marriage, be considered separate property. It also notes the couple has a prenuptial agreement.

Kardashian and Humphries married on August 20 in southern California in a wedding reported to have cost $10 million, after dating for about nine months. More than three million U.S. viewers watched a two-part TV special earlier this month called "Kim's Fairytale Wedding: A Kardashian event".

But claims of tension in the marriage erupted quickly and have spread across entertainment media for the past week. Some reports have suggested Humphries, a 26-year-old New Jersey Nets basketball player, was reluctant to play his role in the Kardashian brand, and there were differences over where the newlyweds would make their home.

This is the second divorce for Kardashian, who was previously married to music producer Damon Thomas for four years, separating in 2004. Since then, the reality star has had a number of high-profile relationships including R&B singer Ray-J and American football player Reggie Bush.

Kardashian is one of the highest-paid reality stars on U.S. television with 2010 earnings estimated at $6 million from her TV show, clothing line, perfume, jewelry and tanning cream and other product endorsements and appearances.
